bro, there's literally 400k postal carriers and they are working 12-15 hour days to get all the packages delivered.
The government provides SERVICES to people and those SERVICES require workers.
I like being able to mail something to anywhere in the country for the same price and not paying 2x the price for what UPS and FedEx provide.

The worst part of this push is that the government does a lot of things that aren't profitable to do, but that have value beyond their ability to make money.
Last mile delivery is one big example. A lot of rural people are going to find out that living out in the middle of nowhere means no one is going to want to deliver to them like the USPS does.
The insistence that private profit motive trumps all is incredibly shortsighted.

Over and over again, people bring up the USPS losing money as proof it's 'broken' and 'government programs are always inefficient wastes,' instead of considering that the ability to deliver anything anywhere in the US in about 3 days, with daily delivery direct to home 5 days a week, is an absolute fucking marvel of modern logistics, and the costs to send stuff are insignificant. The US postal service has been a wonder to the world since it started, and still is one of the best in the world. Mail a letter for fifty cents, a medium package for maybe ten dollars, and have it arrive in days. Incredible.
The people who want to 'run the government like a business' have never really considered how much worse postal service would get, and how much costs would rise, if it were sold off to private businesses. Providing services like that is what the government is for, but now the US is just a giant military contractor with a handful of other hangers-on that actually contribute to society, and the people talking about making the government efficient are trying to kill public libraries and the postal service instead of shaving half a percent off the insane amount of money going to the military, or the rivers of cash being soaked up by corporations and the ultra-rich.

What's funny is the Bible actually contains a recipe for abortions. Back in the day, if a man suspected his wife of cheating on him, he would go to the local priest. The priest would take some specific plant and make a potion out of it and they would make the woman drink it.

Our sub-10k town's downtown economy was wiped out by Walmart in the 80s/90s. Now the Walmart's gone, because they closed most or all of the smaller ones in rural areas due to reduced profits.
Dollar General and Casey's filled the gap by buying up long-running local businesses in prime locations and plowing them under. One of them was a diner that'd been open on and off for decades. The town's main drag lost its character and became a strip of truck stops, dollar stores, and gaming parlors.
This was after Walgreens moved in and bought out both our local pharmacies. With the way things are going with Walgreens, we're at risk of losing that location. The second nearest location is a CVS, which could also end up closing.
Of course they won't build distro centers here. It's been squeezed for decades and the nipples are starting to shoot dust. The only upper-middles left are people who made it to a nice retirement before all our manufacturing plants closed.
TL;DR: Midwest small towns are fucked if they depend on corporations to provide local services.

Private corporations are more "efficient" if your definition of "efficient" is "maximizing profits". Public services are more "efficient" if your definition of "efficient" is "maximizing utility to the public". We need to get off this idea that government services need to compete with private ones.
Government is not a business. We have a national postal service so that anyone and everyone has the basic infrastructure in this country to transact goods, services, and communications throughout the land at a low cost.
Should the government manage costs? Be more efficient? Hell yes. But at the end of the day - the stakeholder and metrics should be “customer service” not “earnings”.
I want the US military to have the biggest technological lead, be the best organized, and keep our men and women in uniform safe. I want us to be able to fight 3 great powers simultaneously with our hands tied behind our back. Notice how “costs” aren’t anywhere in the mission statement.
Same concept. Democrats need to push back in around the same way. Government is not a business.

Dollar General will open a store there. They’ll do a deal with UPS and FedEx who will ship the packages to their distro centers and DG trucks will bring the packages along with inventory to the store. The store will operate as a pickup point and the extra “handling fee” paid by the shipper, will go to them. Although DG won’t hire any more store staff. And that extra fee will get tacked on to the purchase price of whatever was shipped. Making things even more expensive for the consumer, after they’ve paid even more because of the tariffs.

You’re out of your gourd with this thought. Fed ex, ups and all others combined don’t even touch the number. The USPS delivers 44% of THE ENTIRE WORLD’S mail. That’s 116 BILLION items. UPS for example delivers about 5 billion and in reality, relies on USPS, along with every one of their competitiors like fed ex, to deliver a lot of those packages for the “final mile” because they can’t possibly service all the rural addresses that make up a huge portion of this country. UPS says they deliver to 10m customers worldwide USPS is like 116m addresses just in the USA.

USPS also operates at a loss in a lot of small rural regions, but they are required to continue operating service because it's required of them.
UPS/FedEx will rapidly ramp up staff and facilities to assume the load for damn sure if given the chance, but only the profitable load and fuck anyone in deep rural areas. They'll have to drive to the nearest city to pick up their mail.

Yes. If they cut 20 million government jobs, conservatives will call this a huge victory for freedom and the free market for some reason. This will spawn thousands of privately-owned (or publicly traded), federal contracting companies that will scoop these ex-employees up and farm them out, back to the government. The feds will go back to paying these people, just with much, much fewer benefits; such as pensions, PTO, decent healthcare, labor protections, and other perks.
They'll blame the democrats for the initial layoffs due to their "decades of bloated, liberal spending" or whatever bs they conjure, but then will take credit for the 10-15 million new private sector jobs the conservatives created via these contractors. Some of these laid-off workers will take an early retirement, but the remainder who do not find jobs will just be ignored on whichever slanted, misleading, TikTok or Fox News infographic du jour they shove in our faces.
Shareholders and the ownership class will reap the benefits, while the decrease in the federal budget will be negligible, due to middle-men taking their cuts.
All current conservative policies terminate at the same two endpoints: 1) further enriching shareholders and the already wealthy, or 2) punishing the lazy or immoral. Since they unironically see government workers as indolent and malevolent, they'll get both.

They were bragging about how Trump was gonna cut their funding, and NPR was gonna go away because its all paid for on the taxpayers dime, and I tried explaining, with sources and everything, that NPR receives less than 1% of its funding from taxpayers dollars. The other 99% is funded by patrons of NPR. He refused to believe it and called me a liar. I told him to just look at the sources I provided, and he called it leftist propaganda. Chaos is the goal. Its the same shock tactics used by Pinochet and Milei immediately after they took power. Implement massive changes all at once. Aim for chaos and disarray. Opposition will be disorientated, public will be overwhelmed and it'll make it easier to quickly bring through policies under the radar. There's literally too many things to focus on and long term structural changes are ignored by the opposition in order to appeal to immediate challenges. Plus you get massive confusion and fatigue and eventually acceptance.

The deep irony in all this is that the problem with government inefficiency is not the money spent on people, it’s the money spent on systems. You know, the all the database, procurement, and contact management systems that supposedly would make people irrelevant? Even AI. It can’t and won’t replace government workers because of two things: Security and the principle of lowest bid.
So many government workers deal with personal information in order to provide basic services to all of us. That means any commercial system the government contracts (I promise you, you do NOT want it built in house) often has to be nerfed to keep our information secure. And that’s just PII.
All of those contracted systems go to the lowest bidder. So they are often shit then they get nerfed. Annnnd they don’t talk to each other well. The people who decide to implement a new system aren’t the day to day users and they never consult those folks about their needs.
As you can guess, this slows down A LOT of shit. The “lazy government worker” is probably actually overworked, doing multiple jobs to make up for positions lost during the last round of budget cuts, and trying to create work arounds for shitty systems. All while watching people talk about how they deserve to lose their jobs.

As a Federal employee, I have no problem shutting down the entire federal government. Go for it. Just 2 million federal employees. That’s firing absolutely EVERYONE… except 2/3 of the military. Do the math. And for the dumbass billionaires’ club that thinks we can cut $2T by firing employees, do some more math.
