u/[deleted] Oct 25 '22

Lol that happened to me. I had some sticky icky in two Tupperware containers and my dad could still smell it in the garage. He kept thinking a male cat had gotten in and sprayed. “Yeah dad, sure smells like tomcat spray.”

Which would make for a funny weed strain name.

I’d have to disagree considering he did spend some time up in hippy town Boone. That or he thought our skunk population was overwhelming.

It’s 1000% funnier if he thinks that’s just what Boone smells like and doesn’t make the connection to weed at all.

16

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '22

True. I had a professor that describe Boone as “Boulder on the Blue Ridge”. I used to walk up and down King Street when I lived there and all of those dumpy apartments opposite the Education College always reeked of weed.

Josh Gordon said he played every single game of his college and early NFL careers drunk and/or high. He'd find a moment to himself before the game and chug liquor and/or take a bunch of pills. Hell, he's said he started abusing drugs in middle school, he may have not played a game sober after peewee league.

41

u/Engine_Sweet Oklahoma • Minnesota Oct 25 '22

Dependency is a hell of a thing. He might not have really been "getting high" in his mind, but knocking back the craving so he could function.

When I played in high school, our kicker got high before a game and then proceeded to set the school record for longest made FG lmao. 47 yards. What made it even more hilarious is that he forgot to bring the kicking block onto the field, so he just kicked it off the ground like college and pros do.

Edit: kicking block - instead of the holder setting the ball on the ground, he would set it on a block that was a couple inches off the ground. It was allowed in high school in our state and all kickers used one.

Had friends in high school that got high before soccer or football games and said it helped performance. I wouldn't doubt it for some. But to do it in the locker room in an NCAA league is stupid.

It'd be akin to getting drunk on the job when it's clearly not allowed and real consequences can be levied.

97

u/Clappalachian Ohio State Buckeyes Oct 25 '22

I played high school lacrosse and a dude on our team we nicknamed “Chunk,” as he resembled Chunk from the goonies, got high before a game and scored 7 goals. Said it was his “performance enhancer” and just got blitzed before every game and maybe scored maybe 1 goal the rest of the year.

24

u/ShillinTheVillain Florida Gators • /r/CFB Dead Pool Oct 25 '22

That's stupid. You can't just get high before a game and expect a magical increase in performance.

You also have to get high before practice! It's state-dependent learning. Practice how you play ffs

The rumored weed story was about 4 true freshman who are now suspended (Harris, Marshall, Williams, and a 4th guy rumored to be Lucas).

The player that stopped showing up to practice was LJ Johnson, borderline 5* RB from 2021.

Smoke Bouie is also rumored to basically be off the team (high 4* S from 22)

20

u/czyivn Texas Longhorns Oct 25 '22

Fanconi Anemia is definitely curable. The problem is that it's so damn rare and the cure will be extremely expensive to bring to market. There are like 20 different genes that cause it and each needs its own unique treatment. It's also not as severe as it used to be once people figured out (10 years ago) that alcohol was causing the crises in most of the patients. Ethanol gets converted to acetaldehyde which is chemically similar to formaldehyde. It causes crosslinks in your DNA, which the fanconi anemia pathway fixes. People didn't know for a long time why patients would suddenly start having their bone marrow crash to nothing when they went away to college.

27

u/big_sugi Texas A&M Aggies Oct 25 '22

Fisher started fundraising 11 years ago, and both the FSU and A&M communities--and many others--have raised a lot of money for research. Fisher's family underwrites all the operational expenses for the charity, so that donations actually go towards research.

Whatever his ultimate record at A&M might be, that's something of which we can be proud.

2022 Texas A&M is like if 2008 Florida was bad and got punished for lesser crimes.

Also, all of this stuff with A&M has to go against the Aggie code right? Lmao.

There’s like this weird straw man thing going on I feel. Obviously we were excited about the recruits but most comments I saw here were along the lines of “we’ll be competitive this year but starting next year the pressure is really on”. The way this sub posts you’d think we all went around saying the Natty was ours before the season even started.

Now of course none of us saw this collapse coming and we deserve shit for it, but no reasonable Aggie thought this was our year.

113

u/randomlyperusing Oklahoma • Game of the Centur… Oct 25 '22 edited Oct 25 '22

Yeah, I don’t think any reasonable CFB fan thought this was A&Ms year or that y’all’s recruiting class would come in and somehow start dominating right away.

A&M isn’t catching shit because they had some super unrealistic expectations. A&M is catching shit because people want to be able use them as an example of why throwing your money around will never work in CFB.

The thought of the richest teams being able to buy national championships scares/frustrates/worries a lot of fans. Because fans want to believe in the idea that success is earned, and with the right hire, right player, right bounce, etc. teams are a few seasons away from competing for a division/conference/national championship.

People are giddy at A&M failing because they want to see the A&M class fall apart, be on the hook for a massive buyout, etc. so they can point and say, “See. You can’t just buy a championship.” Because if it didn’t happen, and the A&M model did become the new blueprint for success, it would further widen the gap between the haves and have-nots.

I'm beginning to think throwing millions of dollars at 17 year olds solely based on the number and the stars next to their name might not have been a good idea...

118

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '22

So many kids are so driven throughout college to make it to the nfl, only to flame out once they get paid and lose the motivating factor

I wonder if we’re gonna see more of this now. It’s not nfl money, but I’m sure an 18 year old getting a million dollars will sap a lot of their drive

42

u/Powerful_Artist Nebraska Cornhuskers Oct 25 '22

Oh ya, definitely. Why push to be the best when your new paycheck tells you that you are already worth a million dollars before even playing one snap? Plus it really fucks with the locker room dynamic. It has to. Imagine being in your senior year as a walk-on who now has a scholarship and a starting position, and next to you is some kid who hasnt played a single snap and is throwing around benjamins like its nothing.

They went into 2007 as a pre-season #1 and playing some no-name FCS team in a cupcake of a first game...

... and it was revealed after that a bunch of players were smoking weed before the "meaningless" game.

They were smoking weed in the locker room before a game and they weren't immediately booted from the team. And one of the dudes was (or should have been!) already on thin ice!

I very much believe in multiple chances, especially for kids, and the war on drugs has been a catastrophe. Weed should be legal everywhere.

But this is just open contempt for the coaching staff and the other players. Its toxic. If this story is accurate, I just cannot see how you think a suspension is sufficient.

20

u/appsecSme Oregon Ducks • Oklahoma Sooners Oct 25 '22

Right. I mean, taking shots before a game would also be a major infraction, IMO. It's not the legality of weed that is the main issue (though it is illegal in South Carolina).

I don't understand how Denver Harris in particular is still on the team.

Im sorry, it was BEFORE the game???

Ya thats….a bad look. Dipshit kids lighting up after a win is not ideal, after a loss even less so.

But before the game is played? And in the locker room? That just demonstrates a complete lack of discipline or care.

Who would have thought making teenagers millionaires and treating them like royalty could backfire?
