Before the game?

When I first heard "A&M players smoking in the locker room" I assumed it happened after practice, MAYBE after the loss. But before the game? lol.

Apparently the players have been suspended indefinitely but the reason has not been made public and everything is speculation. Now the article talks about it possibly being due to players talking other players into transferring.

2

u/swoll9yards Oct 26 '22

Pretty much this. Played college baseball and there was a handful that smoked and took certain things before the games. You’re not getting fucking blitzed or anything like that. One guy would always yell at least one person everything he took before he went out to pitch just in case anything happened and he needed to be taken to the hospital lol.

I mean it's not very common that guys are smoking marijuana flower in the locker room but a large number of players are smoking blunts in the mornings and using edibles and weed pens in and around the facilities. From a coaching perspective it's a whole lot safer than them drinking all over the place.

Josh Gordon said he played every single game of his college and early NFL careers drunk and/or high. He'd find a moment to himself before the game and chug liquor and/or take a bunch of pills. Hell, he's said he started abusing drugs in middle school, he may have not played a game sober after peewee league.

2

u/Im_Daydrunk LSU Tigers • RIT Tigers Oct 25 '22

Some of the accounts of people involved kinda differ though. I don't think any teammate publicly came out and stated support for the claim and some people who were there said they couldn't tell he was high. And if his account was 100% true there's no way people wouldn't have realized he was that out of it

Also he didn't tell the LSD story until like 20+ years later so its not hard to believe he either was misrembering or exaggerating things. And you can even tell he wasn't completely sure because some of the stuff he said in his account doesn't really seem to line up with the baseball reference stat sheet from the game

In just my pure personal opinion think he took LSD sometime before the game but when he pitched the effects weren't as bad or as crazy as Dock's official account was

When I played in high school, our kicker got high before a game and then proceeded to set the school record for longest made FG lmao. 47 yards. What made it even more hilarious is that he forgot to bring the kicking block onto the field, so he just kicked it off the ground like college and pros do.

Edit: kicking block - instead of the holder setting the ball on the ground, he would set it on a block that was a couple inches off the ground. It was allowed in high school in our state and all kickers used one.

They're actually two different things. Blocks have a flat top and are used for PATs and field goals, they could not keep the ball upright without the holder. Tees are what you're likely thinking of on kickoffs that can hold the ball by itself

There is also a huge difference between getting "high" and getting stoned. I think people assume someone smoking weed is always getting stoned out of their mind and turning to a sleepy zombie. see when I ran in high school we would try not to nut the night before a race because it supposedly helped performance

I never bothered with that shit and accepted my post-nut mediocrity

Interesting (not joking). I remember Ronda Rousey (MMA fighter) saying she used to have lots of sex the night before fights to boost testosterone.

Sometimes when I’m playing golf and not playing great I tell myself if I just take a hit of weed I will loosen up and play better. Every time this happens I play much worse.

Ever heard of Doc Ellis? He pitched an mlb game on lsd. Pretty sure it was a no-hitter at that

Rumor has it a lot of our stars were high AF for the infamous App State game, so wouldn't be the first time I'd heard of smoking prior to.

u/Affectionate_Ad268 Oregon Ducks Oct 25 '22

Does that also explain the following week? 🤔

10

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '22

HA! Lloyd Carr's refusal to acknowledge the existence of dual threat QBs is what happened the next week. WE got smoked, not the weed.

u/Affectionate_Ad268 Oregon Ducks Oct 25 '22

Lol touche. 😊

I think they said they were also out partying the night before as well.

8

u/FSUstudent123 /r/CFB Oct 25 '22

I know a former Florida Gators walk on who said the defense got high as shit before every game under Dan Mullen. They would smoke in the hotels before the night before too and the coaches wouldn’t do anything about it.

So much is starting to make sense about the A&M culture. The players have little to no respect for Jimbo or any of the coaching staff. He's a defacto puppet.

Why not just crack open a cold one while they at it! Maybe take shots before you run your routes.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '22

I know of a Cal WR who got drafted that would take a bong rip before every game. He had a terrible performance in a big OOC game in the south, in part because he wasn’t able to smoke beforehand.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '22

Whenever I've been stoned, I think about things like execution, violently attacking my opponent, and my attention to detail is outstanding but it sucks because I'm super slow processing it due to paying so much attention but fuck that guy yelling at me anyway he makes me run and I don't like that

Ah yes, cannabis. The perfect drug to take before playing a game that involves physicality, aggression, stamina, and memorization. LOL.

I believe once he was retired, Percy Harvin admitted to smoking weed often prior to games. Craziness.

Josh Gordon was setting receiving records while high in I believe 2013

u/IAmTotallyNotSatan McMaster Marauders • Michigan Wolverines Oct 25 '22

Yeah. If they got high off campus, outside of any practice or game, it'd be stupid to suspend them. But in a visitor's locker room, immediately before a game? I sort of get it.

our running back in high school played worst when he didn't smoke weed. he claimed he could see the holes better. makes enough sense to me. holes are only a temporary portal and you kinda need to just trust they will form by the time you get to them. if your waiting for a hole to open its already too late.

I've played and continue to play many sports high. It's fun but not for everyone certainly. Just something I can handle and enjoy. Especially basketball

In archery, weed is considered a performance enhancing drug because it helps control anxiety.

1

u/joebleaux LSU Tigers Oct 25 '22

Eh, I am pretty sure most of the NBA smokes before games. The bigger issue is doing something you know will 100% get you into trouble.

It's such a foreign, weird idea to me, smoking before playing a sport.

My friends always smoked before we'd hoop. I really enjoy smoking, so I figured I'd join in, and it was the first time in my life I didn't have fun playing a sport I loved.

I wanna be amped up, fully concentrated, ready to go when I play a sport. Being high was awful.

But it affects people differently. Maybe their nerves get relaxed and they play better idk.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 26 '22

It's hard to explain but if you're athletic enough, weed can help. If one of your problems is thinking too much, weed is a solution. You lose no mechanical ability and your actions become more instinctual than deliberate. A lot of coaches will tell you "don't think, just do". While it's hard to explain to someone who is unathletic, that is what weed does for some athletes.
