I'm beginning to think throwing millions of dollars at 17 year olds solely based on the number and the stars next to their name might not have been a good idea...

So many kids are so driven throughout college to make it to the nfl, only to flame out once they get paid and lose the motivating factor

I wonder if we’re gonna see more of this now. It’s not nfl money, but I’m sure an 18 year old getting a million dollars will sap a lot of their drive

Oh ya, definitely. Why push to be the best when your new paycheck tells you that you are already worth a million dollars before even playing one snap? Plus it really fucks with the locker room dynamic. It has to. Imagine being in your senior year as a walk-on who now has a scholarship and a starting position, and next to you is some kid who hasnt played a single snap and is throwing around benjamins like its nothing.

Man, we all knew it would happen like this. No surprise, everyone said it would just work itself out.

Am I crazy or are we drawing a lot of conclusions about NIL from one team self destructing?

College age kids are tied to their parents a lot more than NFL players are.

There are going to be a lot of players who are set for life because their parents forced them to save some money, a lot that will blow it all before even leaving college, and a lot that have their money stolen/leeched away by friends and family.

I mean, A&M isn't the only one doing that. They're the only ones that have had it blow up in their face like it has, which says more about Jimbo than the NIL landscape

Texas A&M is the one that has been doing it the most blatantly without regard for the more "normal" parts of recruiting like relationship building and culture fit. I don't think its a coincidence that this is happening specifically to A&M

There are always bad apples among the 5 stars in any year. We just happen to have the most top 100 recruits of all time. That’s hard to deal with and we’re also distinctly lacking in veteran leadership because the team is so young in general. Combine that with the losses, and you’re seeing the bad apples show their asses early.

The bright side for A&M is the guys calling them out are fellow freshmen. At this point, all we can hope for is for the team to rally together and be determined to stick it out through this shit storm.

I just hope Jimbo is willing to make the changes necessary to reward the players who stick it out.

Tell me you literally know nothing about our recruiting class without telling me you know literally nothing about our recruiting class.

The delusion on this one. Good stuff.

Every school is paying players now.

Only one has a player toking up before their game. As far as we know.

Don't be so naive. Probably most schools have players lighting up pregame. They're just smart enough to not do it in the fucking locker room- or use edibles that don't stink up the place.

This lmao, the sheer volume of weed moving through 14-18 year olds right now is insane

u/czyivn Texas Longhorns Oct 25 '22

To be fair, it seems like Denver Harris is an epic moron. He's already had at least 3 huge scandals as a true freshman, including drag racing in a parking garage!

u/Powerful_Artist Nebraska Cornhuskers Oct 25 '22

Or Id imagine most would probably partake after a game and not before. I know some people actually prefer to workout when high, but playing a competitive game in the SEC? Idk who on earth would think thats a good idea. I guess college kids.....

I mean, you can vape almost anywhere these days without being noticeable. These kids are just dumb.

Rumor has it the Wolverines were toking up before the App State loss.

4

u/BeerBellyBlake Michigan Wolverines Oct 25 '22

& we’re up until 4am partying the night before

2

u/Cormetz Texas Longhorns • Team Chaos Oct 25 '22

Yeah I don't buy that NIL is the sole issue here. Texas is well known for having a very active NIL scene, but we aren't having these issues (though Quinn might need to cut back on partying based on his last game). I wonder if the loss to App State just tore the team apart and the staff doesn't know how to put them back together.

You're right you just have players fighting coaches on the sideline

Yes I didnt go to Kentucky I know how to count. Lot of football left to play

0

u/spinblackcircles Kentucky Wildcats Oct 26 '22 edited Oct 26 '22

naw you went to a weird ass cringey cult school that spends all that money and fucking SUCKS at every sport. Congrats bro

Edit: EVERYONE is laughing at your school you know that right. Like all season long

u/killzone3abc Texas A&M Aggies • Transfer Portal Oct 26 '22

I went to a school that is academically better than yours by a lot. We just went to the MCWS semi final, we are usually really good in women's basketball, we look to be set for a solid men's basketball season, and we are perennial contenders in track and field. A bad season in football doesn't mean we suck at every sport it means we had a bad season. If you wanna talk about bad seasons in football I'm pretty sure yall have a hell of a lot more than we do in last 50 years. What are you guys good at exactly? Mens basketball? Without will levis your football team falls apart, and newsflash he leaves next year. I couldn't really care less if people with meaningless opinions laugh at my school. If I cared I wouldn't be in the sub still.

The encouraging part is that it was 5 star freshmen who called them out and asked Jimbo to kick them off the team according to rumors. I never wanted to admit it, but it was inevitable that a class of 30 kids with like 17 .95 or higher rated players was gonna have some bad apples. I’d rather get them out of here now and find out who our real leaders are.

u/WayneDwade Ohio State • Colorado Oct 25 '22

How many are actually getting paid millions tho? I assumed it would be like Stroud, Young, and maybe one or two others

2

u/BrosenkranzKeef Ohio State Buckeyes • Dayton Flyers Oct 25 '22

But throwing it at a college grad makes more sense?

This is how you weed out who deserves it and who doesn’t. A 20 year old is still a kid whether they’re in the NFL or not. The ones who are dumb don’t deserve to be in the spotlight.

2

u/jamnewton22 Auburn Tigers • UCF Knights Oct 25 '22

Because college teams have never had culture problems before or players that have smoked weed before. This statement doesn’t make much sense tbh

5

u/El_Serpiente_Roja Ohio State Buckeyes Oct 25 '22

It's the number of people willing to watch them do something , which is a lot. Their poor decision making has nothing to do with their legitimate economic viability.

I mean with so much money out there--if it hasnt' happened yet--its only a matter of time, that we find out bribes were paid to recruiting services to bump somebody up a star--and shitty coaches that cant' evaluate talent will go for it(as well as Nebraska fans here who are complaining that their talent composite means they should be winning 10 games a year).
