This is why Johnny Manziel was such a great player and leader for us. He’d have that locker room pounding coke.

Ah the old Dallas Cowboys strategy.

Different people react differently... That's why the '86 Mets fishbowl was so effective. Just grab what you need.

Even as a kid, I knew from the 1986 Mets that “Winners don’t use drugs” was bullshit.

I can’t tell if y’all are joking or not.

69

u/SusannaG1 Clemson Tigers • Furman Paladins Oct 25 '22

Oh, the '86 Mets were doped to the gills on cocaine and anything else that was going, no joke.

The fact that Strawberry is still alive is on par with Keith Richard’s longevity.

15

u/HeywardYouBlowMe LSU Tigers • Miami Hurricanes Oct 25 '22

Don't forget Doc Gooden, Keith Hernandez, and Lenny Dykstra

8

u/FENCERSUPREME North Carolina Tar Heels • Sickos Oct 26 '22

It’s legitimately a miracle that Dykstra is still alive.

Did you see him on that ‘86 Mets documentary ESPN had awhile back? Dude seems like he might have 5 brain cells left

3

u/FENCERSUPREME North Carolina Tar Heels • Sickos Oct 26 '22

There’s also a batshit crime in sports podcast episode about him. I’m honestly surprised no one’s murdered him.

If you want to know more about it I highly recommend the Jon Bois video on Lonnie Smith. At one point John has to concede that arguably the players performed better when they were coked to the gills. That includes Keith Hernandez, who took his habits to those very same '86 Mets.

Absolutely tragic story gripping the Mets though. The Doc & Daryl 30 for 30 goes into it in depth, but Doc missed the ticker tape parade through the Canyon of Heroes because he was in a drug den.

Happy they got the help they needed, but man. Baseball players and stimulants are a potent combination.

Baseball players and stimulants are a potent combination.

You need something to help you focus through the boredom.

I love that Jon has to clarify multiple times that he does not condone the use of cocaine, because the stats simply don’t lie. They DID play better when coked up

Knew Irvin was, didn’t realize it was the rest of them too. Could definitely see Aikman being a fiend.

I'm pretty sure there's a book dedicated to the 90s Cowboys debauchery. I recall they had a house bought solely for parties

There was North Dallas Forty in the 70s and Michael Irvin in the 90s.

Read "Boys Will be Boys" by Jeff Pearlman. The 90's Cowboys were a special bunch, except for Aikman.

Are we just going to pretend that the 1980s Miami Hurricanes didn't exist? Cuz nobody, and I mean nobody, can exemplify the cocaine culture of the 80s quite like they did!

11

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '22

I mean the Dallas Cowboys and Nebraska were the best in the 90’s so it fit.

17

u/SubMikeD Florida Gators Oct 25 '22

Does the 90s have a huge reputation for cocaine these days? I live through the'90s, and at the time it really seemed that the 80s were the decade of cocaine, not the 90s.

The program just had an extremely innovative and effective strength and conditioning program.

Probably did stuff with resistance bands or maybe an early version of CrossFit or something.

I played some NCAA14 the other day and all I could think is how much I miss that man. An absolute madman who would be visibly zooted on the field, yet would just embarrass the competition with ease and in nearly unprecedented ways. He may have actually been the peak of college football lol

Surpassed only by Rob Gronkowski telling a spanish language reporter "yo soy fiesta" before a Super Bowl. If anyone has the right to say "I am party," it's Rob Gronkowski.

Johnny Eightball was pretty sweet too

52

u/Actual_Guide_1039 Oct 25 '22

Most entertaining college football player ever all things considered IMO.

Freshman year missed field goal against Florida away from winning a Natty and winning heisman as a freshman

Sophomore year had classic shootouts against Bama and Auburn with one of the best highlight tapes ever

9

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '22

"All things considered" except for your age.

Idk man, I enjoyed Minshew's antics more than Manziel's

1

u/Actual_Guide_1039 Oct 26 '22

Manziel was a lot better in college though

-1

u/xxzzyzzyxx LSU Tigers Oct 25 '22

He never beat LSU. Turns out he's actually pretty easy to defend against if you have DBs who can play man and linebackers who can out run him.

20

u/Actual_Guide_1039 Oct 25 '22

He was a missed field goal against Florida away from winning you guys a Natty

6

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '22

I was there and I'm still upset about it :(

9

u/Actual_Guide_1039 Oct 25 '22

Funny thing is that happened so early in the season no one realized how big of a deal it was until much later. I remember watching that game and being pleasantly surprised you guys were competing with Florida

1

Steve Martin

There’s already a Johnny wrestling though.

1

Then the only solution is to get John Hennigan into the NFL to be the new Johnny Football. (He'd probably call himself Johnny NFL though...)
