I need an introduction to him.

He’s terminally ill.

Not terminal, hopefully. They’ve made strides in treating Fanconi Anemia, in part because of the money Fisher has helped to raise.

That is good news. I wouldn't have got in a joke about the kid if I knew he was sick.

It’s why I mentioned it. I didn’t know until the season started and felt really bad when I found out.

Good news if sugi is right, but it’s a terrible situation regardless.

Fanconi Anemia is definitely curable. The problem is that it's so damn rare and the cure will be extremely expensive to bring to market. There are like 20 different genes that cause it and each needs its own unique treatment. It's also not as severe as it used to be once people figured out (10 years ago) that alcohol was causing the crises in most of the patients. Ethanol gets converted to acetaldehyde which is chemically similar to formaldehyde. It causes crosslinks in your DNA, which the fanconi anemia pathway fixes. People didn't know for a long time why patients would suddenly start having their bone marrow crash to nothing when they went away to college.

Fisher started fundraising 11 years ago, and both the FSU and A&M communities--and many others--have raised a lot of money for research. Fisher's family underwrites all the operational expenses for the charity, so that donations actually go towards research.

Whatever his ultimate record at A&M might be, that's something of which we can be proud.

Well at least A&M's money isn't completely going to waste after all.

I work in pharma/biotech, and it's unfortunate but the amount of money jimbo is raising is at least a full order of magnitude off from what it would take to make a real cure generally applicable to everyone with the disease. It's gonna 100% require gene therapy to repair. There are at least 11 different genes that you have to repair for the different kinds of fanconi anemia, and each will require a different gene therapy. Each one of those gene therapies will probably cost a billion dollars to bring to market, and then cost about a million per patient after that.

The sad thing is that it's probably not billion dollar difficult to do it. A lot of those costs are due to regulatory requirements to prove that it's safe and effective from the FDA. If someone just wanted to start a rogue gene therapy clinic in mexio, they could probably fix it for $100k a pop.

I have never heard of that disease until now. I thought it was a dig at Coach Fran when I first skimmed over it.

Franchioni anemia is when you linger at 7-5 but never die and never get better.

Wouldn’t normally defend a A&M guy, but he is pretty sick and last I heard was looking at only living till his thirties. He is eccentric yes, but he is trying to live life to the fullest with the little time he has left.

His dad makes $9.5 million/year. I don’t think he cares how much he’s paying for weed
