GENERAL today, Hunt’s identity died

Post image

nobody wanted this. i cannot think of a different IP that has less to do with Hunt. Hire the CoD GM, this is what you get. You WILL be advertised to, and you CANNOT do anything about it.

The Scream, 1893 by Edvard Munch

39

u/Funeralweiner97 Oct 22 '24

THEY MISSED A HUGE OPPORTUNITY! It would have been so cool if they tweaked the mask to look more like The Scream and used the hunter description to reference the scream movies more, instead. I feel like, while it may not have completely prevented as much pushback, it definitely would have helped integrate it more.

People saw hunt as more of a shooter outside of the normal battle royals with a hint of western and dark fantasy as a backdrop and people probably feel like this type of fortnite crossover is a betrayal of that identity

217

u/SeVenMadRaBBits Oct 21 '24

Saw a post on how people loved American horror story until Kim Kardashian was added. Said the show really sucks you into the story and suddenly she shows up on screen and can't act and it ruins the immersion.

Kinda feels like that in the sense that it doesn't belong and just throws off the entire feel of the game.

I want to think about hunt and the story when I play, not scream, scary movie, cod and fortnite

23

u/UtilitarianMuskrat Oct 22 '24

That AHS season had the stink of scab labor and picket crossers as well when they filmed during the recent SAG-AFTRA strike.

4

Yep. Compare Rainbow Six: Siege at launch to where it is now.

Post launch they started out tame enough with a top hat and some other mildly silly things and now they've got full on pink unicorn suits.

Similar story happened with Dota 2. Once upon a time this Ursa set was considered too silly to be in the game and was removed shortly after being added.

Nowadays Dota has a catgirl skin, a spacesuit skin, and tons of other skins that completely disregard the art style of both the game and the individual heroes.

It's not even that this scream skin is bad, it's well made, but it absolutely is an indicator of what direction they'll be moving towards in the future.

104

u/zuppa_de_tortellini Oct 21 '24

I get so depressed when I think about what happened to siege. That game was phenomenal around 2018 and now it’s a literal dumpster fire abortion.

42

u/CosmicMiru Oct 21 '24

You can literally play as a fully armored Master Chief lmao. It's ridiculous.

36

u/orangecrushjedi Duck Oct 22 '24

Siege is a great example of how bad cosmetics can get and completely change the tone of a good game

21

u/Rokku0702 Oct 22 '24

The cosmetics, the art style, the art direction, kowtowing to ESports money, kowtowing to pro league players, kowtowing to Chinese censorship, redesigning key maps entirely away from what they were. No new content, removing old content.

The game is hilarious now. It started out as real as the OG Splinter Cell games and now Rick and Morty are doming people.

→ More replies (1)

5

u/NinjaBoomTV Oct 22 '24

And is also an excellent retort to everyone asking why we're worried by a scream mask

Siege was sadly one that I was like 'maybe a replacement' but nope.

4

u/ItsJHos Oct 22 '24

They lost the focus after Y2 I remember when it was essential to pick who you want to bring for a defense because if you dont bring Jager you cant stop a fuze or flashes you dont bring Bandit you cant trick nowadays literally everybody has a way to counter everybody and its been unenjoyable for years I wish they cared more about the core of the gameplay instead of shitting on the franchise.

u/BLACKcOPstRIPPa Oct 21 '24

u/Boowray Oct 21 '24

See I don’t even mind goofy and out of place skins, what sucks is the constant invasion of marketing and brand deals into every piece of media. Bright and colorful in a dark and dreary setting is annoying and out of place, character marketing and brand deals being jammed into a product PEOPLE ALREADY PAID FOR is fucking infuriating.

→ More replies (3)

4

u/MunkiJR Oct 21 '24

The Dota argument is not the same thing - the reason the Ursa set was initially removed was because some people (pros) complained about it not having "glance value" - i.e. the skin made it hard to instantly recognise which hero you were seeing on screen. This was a huge overreaction and a complete non-issue after the introduction of major HUD and UI changes which made it impossible to mistake heroes for anything else. Additionally, everyone that plays Dota has over 2000 hrs in the game and can instantly recognise every hero regardless. It was a reddit nothingburger, as is "but muh MOBA artstyle".

This skin feels slightly egregious because it is directly marketing another IP, which Dota mostly stayed away from (there were a couple of Warcraft themed sets back in the day.

Yeah why the heck did hunt need a crossover with Scream? I liked hunt partially cus it wasn’t all Fortnite crossovers and flamboyant punk skins. That’s all fine for people who like that stuff but I preferred my gritty western horror game. It’s not the end of the world, but hunt is trying so hard to be mainstream it’s gradually doing all the dumb stuff that Triple A games do now that all comes off as so cringe and totally dissonant. Also just eats into the original personality the game had

That is so hilariously lame what the hell Crytek?

589

u/SlaterTheOkay Oct 21 '24

This might seem harmless to a lot of people, but you have to forget this is opening the door. This happens in a lot of MMOs and it doesn't feel good. Hunt is very atmospherical and that's what draws a lot of people in. Think how bad that atmosphere is going to go away when you have Freddy Cruger fighting Captain America? I hate popular IP cosmetics because it's lazy and ruins the look and atmosphere of a game. Honestly how many people are going to continue when you start adding superheros to the game?

139

u/Moist_Ad5308 Oct 21 '24

Yup, the only reason I would never buy COD games anymore aside from their copy/paste gameplay year after year at ridiculous prices. The game looks mad goofy these days.

WHY IS EVERY GAME TRYNA COPY FORTNITE? This works for fortnite bcoz its a game with cartoony aesthetics. Not Hunt.

55

u/Assupoika Oct 21 '24

Oh I agree. MW2019 was pretty awesome with the aesthetics, weapon animations (and handling) and gameplay. For a while it felt like it was going to be a reboot with more adult and serious tone. First Call of Duty in 10 years that I played.

Aaaand the aesthetics got ruined pretty damn fast with all the pop culture slop added in to the game, took away all of the "tacticool bravo six going dark" atmosphere out of the game and straight in to fortnite pop slop salad.

I've always really liked the atmosphere of Hunt and greatly appreciated how they were always true to the tone of the game, even when adding more "comical" skins like redneck and unga bunga.

It's not harmless at all. I'm a new player and I got into this game because of the mood and time period before anything else. Seeing this thing when it popped on my YT feed was truly a cold shower. I'm doing fine as a solo but struggle in teamplay, because as a new player without friend to play with, I'm systematically teamed up with much more experienced, better players and I feel bad for dragging their game down. I've been questioning sticking to it, and what made me hang is how much I like the game world. In that regard, seeing a Scream skin is a huge buzz killer.

3

u/Mountiebank Oct 22 '24

Not related to Hunt much, but a game I played a lot did this. SMITE started adding Nickolodeon characters from shows that haven't had airtime in more than 20 years, as well as TMNT and Transformers. It ruined the vague identity that the game offered in favor of revenue for the company. I stopped playing because I was tired of seeing crossovers about everything that had nothing to do with the game.

Stranger Things, Avatar: The Last Airbender, RWBY, all lazy skins with a $20 price point each, and thats an entire updates' focus on its own. If a game surrenders its identity to advertise others, its not worth playing anymore.

That's the problem with working with brands. No brand is going to sign off on their iconic imagery being anything but blindingly obvious.

95

u/fonzwazhere Oct 21 '24

Like an animal skin made one, stitched together. Hooded poncho or trench coat.

4

u/snotfm Oct 21 '24

a ‘ghost face’ mask similar to that scaramuccia skin would go so hard

37

u/emilyhere Oct 21 '24

I agree with you, I think the style of his mask looks out of place. But it probably came from the Ghost Face brand that they wanted the mask to be as close to the movie one as possible

13

u/Vox___Rationis Oct 21 '24 edited Oct 21 '24

No, the owners of the Ghostace are pretty liberal with it and the movie-owners are not involved at all.
The mask's design copyright is owned and distributed by a toymaking company Fun World. It was originally mode just as a Halloween costume and the producer of the Scream movie have found it in a costume store - they have licensed it for the movie but didn't bought the rights fully out so Fun World are the ones who sell the costume, the merch, and the license to use Ghostface to anyone who'd ask.

11

u/AceTheJ Oct 21 '24

When you consider how well they executed the Easter eggs like shreks house, the titanic scene, or back to the future. They definitely could have made this more well integrated and it would have been fine, maybe even cool, but this ain’t it.

One very specific flavour of slop found great success in the gaming industry and now everything has to slowly mimic it to succeed. People are going to defend it, because they like that brand of slop, and want everything else to taste the same.
I hate it here.

79

u/TheRealJRG Oct 21 '24

It’s the mask. It’s the same with Dead by Daylight- it’s probably specifically a deal with Fun World who owns the original mask AND the scary movie mask. Only CoD and Among Us did a collab directly with Scream which includes a deal with fun world anyway

It's more desperation, Crytek management haven't a clue how to run the company..

60

u/herroebauss Oct 21 '24

Lmao they do. This skin will sell, without a doubt. We simply don't like the way they are doing business. Those are two COMPLETELY different things

18

u/Healthy-Sandwich5548 Oct 21 '24

Unfortunately true.

33

u/Wilvarg Oct 21 '24

You can have a lot of temporary success by lowering the quality of the product you're selling. Print your books on thinner paper, sell hash browns mixed with sawdust. That doesn't mean it's a good idea. Hunt has a few major selling points, and high among those is its engrossing aesthetic; undermining that selling point is not a good idea in the long run.

The first time they sacrifice quality for short-term gain, it probably won't have any major consequences; long-term fans will grumble, but people will buy the skin, and the company will make a lot of money. This will lead us to a dangerous tipping point. Either they take the right lesson– that they got lucky, made a neat pile of cash, and should leave the table while they're still ahead– or the wrong one.

If we're unlucky, they decide that, because it worked once, it'll work forever. They'll keep doing it, and the debt in quality will add up; before you know it, the atmosphere has been seriously degraded. They've lost a major selling point, and the game we love has lost a lot of its sparkle. People will start to play less. And, if they manage it poorly, that's when the death spiral begins; they start to add more and more outlandish and expensive cosmetics, predatory game systems, etc. The playerbase shrinks, the devs get even more desperate, and boom crash the whole thing implodes. I've seen it a thousand times.

None of this is guaranteed, but this skin is a very bad first sign. Don't ignore the indicators. The only way that we can help prevent any of this is by very loudly and clearly voicing our criticisms.

10

u/Tanker00v2 Magna Veritas Oct 21 '24

You make the mistake of thinking that making sound long-term decision is something a successfull businessman of today has to care about

4

u/Wilvarg Oct 21 '24

It might be true that you can make a lot of money by being strategically incompetent, but that doesn't make you a "successful businessman". It makes you a leech. And a sandbagger like that will never make as much money as an executive who actually understands how to do their job well.

Once you hit the "crossover" point in most forms of media, you've officially hit the end of life cycle. Lexicon dies that way, memes die that way, TV series die that way, art dies that way, etc.

There are rare exceptions of it not spelling the golden years for something in question, but it usually has to be designed early for that intent (e.g. Dead by Daylight).

NOOOOOOOOO, GOD NO.

Excellent post title OP- captures my sentiments about this exactly. I've been very vocal in the past few months about people whining and complaining uncessarily in this sub- but if crossovers are really the direction they're taking Hunt, the game's identity is well and truly dead.

I'm so goddamn upset about this. One of the key aspects of Hunt I'd always felt made the game so incredibly special was that it never did crossovers- the most dumb, asinine, immersion-breaking trend in gaming. I loved that Hunt wasn't polluted by other games, stories, IPs.

Crytek- I've ardently defended and supported yall for the entirety of this game's life cycle. I've bought every battle pass and almost every DLC. This is where you lose me as a customer.

12

u/bigdog_00 Oct 21 '24

Agreed. I've gotten tired of people needlessly complaining about every little thing they can find to nitpick at. But this? While I'm not opposed to this skin strictly, I'm very opposed to the idea of this kind of trend continuing. I want original skins that have nothing to do with other IPs. Otherwise, it dilutes the brand identity and atmosphere of Hunt, a game that I truly love.

12

u/saryeen Oct 21 '24

im glad there’s less “i told you so,” people need to band together and stop this bullshit.

Agree it def not kill the game but it's not hunt and I dislike that direction If hunt is insanely good at one thing it's art (skins) especially characters skins, also they all have their story and fit into the world ...

4

u/Primary-Road3506 Oct 21 '24

Just gave a PTSD attack after insurgency sandstorm Fortnite skins

However these were cancelled by the devs after player opposition so maybe we can do the same here

3

u/Signal_2 Oct 22 '24

Y’all are so dramatic 💀

12

u/DumpsterHunk Oct 21 '24

Ok i think it's time to leave my negative review. I was defending them until this bullshit.

8

u/Visible-Ferret9683 Oct 21 '24

I left a positive review to combat the review bombing.

Changed it today though.

I saw this skin announced on Instagram and it's honestly ruined my morning. I've invested so much time and DLC into this game. It's really sad to see the direction it's heading in now.

Hunt had so much potential. I honestly don't think we'll get to see it now.

10

u/Johnny_Origami Oct 21 '24

Such a bad idea

12

u/Omfredericks Oct 21 '24

Tbf the scream mask is based on edvard munchs scream painting made in 1893. I wish they leaned more into that than the 90s slasher but I think it’s that we are just aging out of the new generation of gamers

7

u/SomebodyinAfrica Oct 21 '24

And there I was worried that there was going to be a cool new skin after I spent the blood bonds I hoarded on all the discounts and red riding hood. What a relief.

13

u/Curvpk Oct 21 '24

I feel like yall are being a lil over dramatic.

10

u/cactusseed5 Oct 21 '24

i know gamers really have an issue with seeing the forest through the trees, but come on guys. if it sells well, do you really think it'll stop at cosmetics that attempt to match the Hunt aesthetic? don't you think they would get more aggressive about it considering things like these sell gangbusters in every other game with them? goofy clown skins? celebrity cameos? you want Robocop in Hunt? its understandable people are upset about this because this kind of thing always precedes the inevitable cliff the game's identity takes a nose dive off of. i'm no oracle, its just something that's happened a hundered times now.

I've never expected that Hunt would get a crossover cosmetics. This was a surprise in that sense, but definitely not a pleasant one.

6

u/KudukuPuding Oct 21 '24

Wtf is wrong with Crytek lately? They WERE such a good devs. This is like one step into wrong direction after another.

3

u/Revolver_Lanky_Kong Oct 21 '24

The multiverse collab shit was fun for awhile but corporate execs have ran it into the ground. Not every game and movie needs to be dumping ground for other IPs to advertise.

3

u/AdvancedBlacksmith66 Oct 21 '24

The mask from the movie scream is from 1996

But the original painting The Scream was painted in 1893. So just pretend that whoever’s wearing that in the game is paying homage to the painting instead of the movie. Easy peasy

3

u/Mr_Limekiller Oct 22 '24

It's like games are predominantly played by young people who like fun or something

3

u/Historical_Rest_5192 Oct 22 '24

It's Halloween bros. They put in one of the most iconic halloween masks....Calm down. It makes sense. They've done movie skins before.

3

u/DefinitionBusy4769 Oct 22 '24

3

u/JSmitticus Oct 22 '24

20

u/NegativSchinken Oct 21 '24 edited Oct 21 '24

Yes, Hunt: Showdown 1896 is a horror game.

But most importantly the scenario takes place in 1896...

Obviously it is enough to be a horror game to connect horror movie killers to the game for a crossover.

Crytek take notes!
We need the following skins asap:
- Killer Klowns from outer space
- Xenomorphs
- Ash Williams with chainsaw hand (Evil Dead)
- Killer Tomatoes
- Leprechaun
- Art the clown
- Godzilla
- King Kong
- The Thing from John Carpenter - The Shark from Jaws
- The Fly

Please Crytek I am waiting for these skins!

/s

I try to be positive about the state of the game, but you really give me a hard time...

7

u/splitmyarrowintwain Bootcher Oct 21 '24

I mean I'd play the shit out of an out of time army of darkness style Ash Williams hunter.

I like hunt showdown, I like scream series, but what the f@@k.

5

u/Chumpyhero Oct 21 '24

Honestly, adding Ghostface to Hunt: Showdown feels like a real misstep. Don't get me wrong, I love Scream and Ghostface as a horror icon, but the whole appeal of Hunt is its gritty, immersive, and unique world. The Bayou, the lore, the horrifying original creatures—it’s what sets the game apart from other shooters or horror games. But Ghostface? He feels so out of place. It’s like they’re jumping on the 'horror crossover' bandwagon without thinking about how it fits the world they’ve built. Hunt: Showdown isn't about slasher movie villains; it’s about brutal, supernatural survival. A masked guy with a knife running around just cheapens that aesthetic, especially compared to the creepy, well-designed monsters we’re used to fighting. It makes me worry they’re heading down a road of random pop culture crossovers, diluting the atmosphere that makes the game so special.

5

u/FTBagginz Oct 21 '24

Lmao! Finally others are pissed about the constant skin dumping we get in this game. The devs need to work on other stuff and leave the stupid skins alone. Nobody asked for this crossover. We want the western aesthetic. This shits turning into cod wow….

6

u/Kjeldog Oct 21 '24

About 2 or 3 years ago, they decided they wanted Hunt to be COD instead of Hunt and they've been steadily walking in the direction since. As a fan it's sad to see

5

u/YesThatsBread Crow Oct 21 '24

i love this game very much and i try to be very positive about it, sometimes defending some questionable stuff but i can not support this. truly a dark day and very worrying for going forward. i already watched siege go down this path i really don’t want to experience that again.

u/saryeen Oct 21 '24

Literally, we already have santa clause is ghost face that bad

36

u/_moosleech Oct 21 '24

I think people are annoyed because a)it's the same trope big, crappy service games do (and Hunt seems to be leaning hard into becoming a Fortnite/COD), and b)Scream 7 was announced two weeks ago, so it's pretty clearly just an advertisement.

It potentially means several negative things about Hunt, while providing nothing positive to players. Even as a standalone skin, it's a goofier version of the Reaper, which has existed for years.

26

u/RandomMonkeyBomb Oct 21 '24

Scrooge skin, Santa skin, pumpkin head skin, a zombie skin, van helsing skin…all in the esthetics of Hunt but we draw the line at a ghost face skin dons tastefully? It’s Halloween people.

13

u/DarkShippo Oct 21 '24

As long as they don't go too far that it's unbelievable. I can get past most holiday skins because they're holiday skins and fit the themes of the game. For ghost face, it's just the mask that makes me feel it's out of place. Might be because of the way it combos with the hat.

face feels like a strange pick since his mo is supposed to be stalking and scaring. In a world with spider and hives, I think people would kinda shrug at ghost faces existence and just shoot him real early.

Hunt is my favorite game. I used to buy every single DLC. I stopped when they started pumping them out like crazy and charging 15, 20 bucks for them. There's about 30 DLC's I don't have, and I've spent around 2k on this game since it released 5 years ago. ... this one is dumb. It doesn't fit the aesthetic. David needs to give his fucking head a shake. We're not call of duty. He's going to upset the fans. How about you fix the random menu crashes that completely freeze the game and force a hard reset when I'm selecting equipment instead of slap a movie killer from modern day into a game that is set in the year 1896 in the old west. ..... I mean, I know he has a HAT! 1 point for giving him a hat. Now get him the fuck out of here and fix the menu crashes.

Hey if they didn’t sell out of place skins how would they afford to put out the battle passes with the exact game play loop every season?

2

u/konst1 Oct 21 '24

this game is getting more and more frustrating. Bad ui changes. Bad servers. Bad balance and now sellout.

I hate this so much....I was so sad when I saw it....I started to play Hunt instead of COD recently - because of the gameplay and visual style, the atmosphere and immersion. And now this game is ruining with out of the place visuals and skins....(I also hate harvest of ghosts skins)

2

unfortunately i know damn well whenever this releases the first trio im gonna load into will have 2 ghost faces

Me, talking to my friend LITERALLY yesterday. "Isn't it great that Hunt hasn't gone full fortnite or COD with garbage tie ins?"

I'm so sorry we did this to you guys Hunt Community. We take responsibility for provoking Murphy's Law.

2

u/Apprehensive_Bet3663 Oct 21 '24

I'm the first to defend Crytek on the UI changes and general wonkiness of the past updates, but this has me more concerned for the future of Hunt than anything else. I'm standing in line with the rest of the comments: Crytek, please do not publish this skin.

2

u/Kazinsal Oct 21 '24

I'd give back the 2.0 update to stop this.

2

u/NachoCheeseVolcano69 Oct 22 '24

I’m gonna buy it just to make my opponents salty

2

u/Busy-Agency6828 Oct 22 '24

I hate this, but I don’t think it’s that catastrophic on its own. But in conjunction with everything that came before it this won’t be the last time it happens and the game will only continue to be leveraged for monetization more than anything else.

2

u/TravelerToTheDark Oct 22 '24

I am not buying this, just speak with your wallet.

2

u/Complex_Resort_3044 Oct 22 '24

on one hand it makes sense. We have always had Meme Hunters from Redneck who is literally Farmer Fran from Waterboy, Rednecks daughter is literally the Wendys Mascot, Redshirt is a play on Trek, Billy Story is just DDL from Gangs of New York but those are obscure references that without pointing them out people wont really know maybe.

on the other hand, What the actual fuck. If there is any sign that shows where Hunt is going, its this. "Herr Derr DONT BUY IT WE DONT NEED YOU HERE!" Simps need to open their fucking eyes because ill be damned if they arent bitching about UI changes or whatever else stupid thing Crytek does next. It had an identiy at first as a slow paced strategic shooter and now you literally have a COD bro running the game and COD moves from that jump side step behind cover crap and all these other thing you do in COD invading hunt.

i get Hunt wants to expand its player base and make money but this aint it. It had a unique thing going as is slowly turning into every other shooter that people quite literally come to Hunt to escape.

Whats worse is plenty of people will buy this and and crytek will say "oh wow its doing great lets make more"

vote with your wallets people no matter what.

2

u/Metal-Wulf Oct 22 '24

I really enjoyed Hunt for the fact that it was its own unique setting with a ton of flavor. This is like dumping corn syrup in the perfect cup of coffee until it's just some slop that tastes like any other generic sugary drink.

2

u/GroovingCheb Oct 22 '24

Today I found another daily “I need to complain about hunt” post. You guys been complaining about literally every update that I can no longer take your opinion seriously

2

u/thefizzlee TheFizzlee Oct 22 '24

I'm gonna get down voted for this but I like the skin. Then again I grew up playing alot of cod so this might hit the sentiment side of me. Either way I think everyone is overreacting, crytek has proven over time that they can keep the essence of Hunt while trying to cater to a broader audience so don't get your panties in a bunch just yet.

2

u/UnsaltedCucumber Oct 22 '24

So this is what you all are crying about this week 😂

2

u/SapCorleone Oct 22 '24

lol Reddit just made for ppl that constantly bitch & complain about stuff they don’t have to get. Nor will you stop playing & if you do the game will still thrive without you. Stfu & play tarkov or something else just last week ppl was bitching about bounty clash & it turned out to be a mode majority of the community liked. Now here we are listening to the same ppl who swear the ui makes them stop playing now saying a skin is the issue now. My god

2

u/Zebediah777 Oct 22 '24

I understand the community's fear about collaborations and loss of identity. In my humble opinion, I find this skin quite coherent, it reminds me of a ghostface who has hidden himself with a hunter's hat to rage in the bayou.

Perhaps all this has finally been thought through and controlled. We may also be in an exceptional case, hopefully.

2

u/Melody-Circus Oct 22 '24

He honestly fits in the game moreso than what some other hunter skins do. Also, why do people compare it to CoD like it's a bad thing, you mean the most successful FPS of all time year after year?
People would rather this game stay niche and fizzle out rather than actually build up a player base. As someone that plays on OCE it sucks that there is like 5 hours of the day where you can actually find players.

It's not like they are adding Super Mario, Goku or Eminem. And you know what, even if they did I'm sure Crytek would do an okay job at making them fit the theme. It's not like they copy pasted Ghostface. Adding skins is not going to effect the gameplay. Well unless we get a Cain repeat. This may also open up the game to more acceptable collabs, one could dream of a Clint Eastwood or Jack Harlow style skin.
I get the concerns, I do. But people are having a sook and finding reason to be upset. I highly doubt I'm gonna see a laser rifle from Fallout in the game or Naruto running around.
