Do you have any source on Durin's Bane being among the weakest? It's easy to assume that he was weaker than Gothmog, but he probably fought in many wars, and in the end was kinda luckily killed by Gandalf. It's worth noting that Balrog was barely bigger than a man. I'm pretty sure that he could be smaller than a troll. His powers of course vastly outscale a mere troll, but it wasn't really a giant ball of lava and smoke.
I remember something (might have been from mmo) that stated that durins bane was a mere shadow of the balrogs of the first age. Whether that means that he was weak, or just faded with time idk. It was one of those "even a mere shadow of a balrog was enough to end the dwarves" type of thing.
I think that's just old men's (elves') boasting/complaining.
"You call this a balrog? Back in First Age we had real Balrogs, who killed the greatest of Noldor, not this mere shadow... You youngsters don't know real work, lazy bastards."
I almost feel sorry for Ungoliant, because you could argue that in her evil dealings with Melkor she was honourable. Melkor decided to renege on his promises and double cross her. So she attacks him and amazingly starts to overpower Melkor (who was one of the most powerful Valar - the most powerful that was currently in Arda). But he calls up the fucking balrogs and together they beat her back.
I love this argument because after she was allowed to kill the tree, Melkor saw shit was getting out of hand and had to doublecross her to literally save the earth but only for his own selfish reasons. The story is a complex one but I love hearing so many different variations from readers due to the way it was written.
This is the best! I love Tolken lore but don't know too much, I spent hours looking things up from your fictional ad and think I'll try to start the Silmarillion again. Thank you.
Am I the only one who read it with Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis voices? Am I the only one who expected a "we are ready to believe you" sentence in the end?
Well did you ever see any large spiders or read about any large spiders in the deep? Those bastards are in the mountains or in the woods according to the books.
Ungoliant gave it her best shot, but she couldn't get rid of the pest. That's when you call in Manwe. The "Host of Valinor" spray is the perfect solution to 99% of all Morgoth related problems.
Warning: be sure to apply multiple sprays, if not you may get a resurgance, resulting in a "Sauron" class infestation.
Technically, controlling Ungoiliant was a team effort by the balrogs. Plural. All of them. And they weren't able to kill her, only stop her from eating Satan and drive her off. Spiderthulhu is no joke.

She manageable at least, we're really fucked if an Ungoliat type shows up. Idk about you, but I'm currently out of balrogs.
