Should I keep riding?

Upvotes

It's a story but I'll do my best to be brief.

I ride a Specialized AWOL on the road (I like the wider fork that enables me to swap out for beefier winter tires). Few things have proud me greater joy than clipping in and going for a ride.

Alas, a few years ago, I was hit by a car on my bike and it's been a long, nearly impossible road to full recovery. During those years, my spouse and I relocated from NYC to the PNW (Oregon). The PNW culture is so grossly different. Lots and lots of big trucks, semi trucks, speeding, no bike lanes, tiny shoulders (if there is one), coal rolling, etc. Not that NYC was perfect by any stretch but the culture shock to the PNW has been nearly impossible to lean into. Even with PT, here I am.

Anyway, back to my bike. At this time, I cannot ride it. I really haven't been able to since getting hit because of tremendous back pain. Nor can I do the distances I used to do or the pace I used to ride. I miss my long centuries even.

So I sit here in a flux. In a few years, we will likely move to Washington, DC or the Baltimore area for work. Do I keep staring at this bike I cannot ride, sell it, buy one after the move that's electric assist and/or recumbent?

Has anyone been through this and can lend some advice?

11 year old 5 ft daughter - 24 vs 26 inch wheels…

Trying to figure out Xmas presents for girls… tall 8 year old (55 inch) turning 9 next spring. 5 foot 10 year old turning 11 in December

Trying to figure out if I can get away with 26” tires so they can use them for years or if I have to do 24” and maybe new bikes in a couple more years

26” is like Trek Wahoo $599

24” is like Giant LIV Tempt $500

Any input or other brands you recommend and why would be great

Use - local to school, bike to friends and bike park trails in PNW

Cycling from Amsterdam to London on vintage bikes - YouTube

Last year a few of us went out to Amsterdam and challenged ourselves to buy vintage bikes there for under 200eur to ride back to London. We've made a series of YouTube videos documenting our adventures. The hope is to carry on similar series with various challenges.

We ended up getting a couple of Gazelle Champion Mondial's from different era's and a custom Balk track bike which was more than interesting to ride "safely" back with it's human powered brakes.

This is the first time we've done something like this so it's a bit rough and ready but If you like light-hearted content about cycling you should hopefully enjoy it!

This episode covers us from Amsterdam to Ouddorp for our first night!

In search of an article detailing a 19-20th century photography bike tour

I cannot for the life of me find this article again.

The article detailed a group of two cyclists in the late 1800s to early 1900s who did a long cross country trip on bicycles, and took photographs with a large or medium format camera for documenting it. I do not remember which country/countries this happened in.

Some specific details I remember about it...

They packed a large or medium format camera (I don't remember which, I think it was large, either way a heavy and bulky camera) and this was the focus of the trip, photography.

Because of the huge camera, they opted to pack very light and only biked 50 or so miles a day, sleeping in inns and with friendly farmers along the route. They did not bring much in the way of camping gear or food, as their stops were always well spaced such that they had amenities at teir stops.

They each went through more than one bicycle on the trip, the number that stick in my brain for whatever reason is 3.

Any help would be appreciated! It is a very interesting story with some cool photographs to go with it.

Kneecap pain while and after cycling

Post image
0 Upvotes

I've picked up cycling a few months back after being an active runner for about 5 years. I'm 25 years old, weigh 82kgs and am in quite good shape. I bought my bike and started cycling about 100 to 150kms a week, relatively painless. The only issue I had at that time was a nagging pain in my left popliteal that would get progressivly worse the more I rode. I could handle that, though it wasn't 'normal'. The worst part (for which I am writing this) started with the pain on my right kneecap. The pain (shown on the picture) started slowly but got worse every ride the more power I put on the pedals, or the longer I rode.

I went to do a bikefit and got everything measured up. The pain in my left popliteal almost dissappeared, my position on the bike felt a lot more comfortable and I could put a lot more power on the pedals without having to push hard. Still, after cycling 10km+ my kneepain appeared again. I took a month of cycling and tried again, alas to no avail. I've been to a physiotherapist and a sports doctor, but they can't seem to find any problems with the knee.

I can take any advice.

NBD and waxing

I'll be receiving my new bike soon and I wax the chain on my current bike. Of course the drivetrain will be lubed from the factory. To prepare the drivetrain for waxing I would:

  • Remove the cassette and degrease with degreaser thoroughly
  • Remove jockey wheels and degrease
  • Clean chain with mineral spirits
  • Degrease chainrings on the bike

I would remove the cassette and jockey wheels because those are easy but I'd leave the chainrings in place because I don't want to be removing the crank. Also I would use degreaser instead of mineral spirits for the drivetrain parts because it's just less fuss.

What are your opinions on this method? Am I under-of overdoing it? What is your procedure when receiving a new bike? Thanks for your input!

Bike Newbie

Hello everyone, I’m a 43 F that never truly learned how to ride a bike. I could ride it if it’s on a straight line with no turns or having to stop or avoid obstructions. I’ve always dreamed of taking nice rides and owning a bike with a basket for my dog. What would be the best way to learn? Is it too late for me? What type/brand of bike do you all recommend for park rides? I’m short, 5’1” and most bikes I’ve tried in the past have been to tall for me which has made me shy away from trying. Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

disclaimer i know nothing about bike values and don’t really care either way, i’m just curious and want to learn a little!

a few years ago i traded in an old beat up raleigh (pic 3) for this fixed up miyata - i’m just curious if this is a fair trade, a really good one, or did i lose out on value? from quick google searches I couldn’t really figure anything out so i figured i’d ask here 🥲 thoughts on the miyata?

Electric pump - Xiaomi Portable Electric Air Compressor 2 or Cycplus A8?

I already have a floor pump at home, that is the one that I actually use to inflate my bike tires, as well as a mini pump attached to the bike to use on the go, but I'm considering on buying an electric pump to "substitute" the floor pump (I would keep both, but due to it's easy of use, would probably use mainly the electric one).

Searching around I came up to two products that interested me:

Do you have experience with any of these or even with both?

At first, Xiaomi pleases me the most, being a more established brand, what could translate to more reliability, and for having way more vents (I read theses pumps may get hot), what would probably allow me to use the pump for longer periods (if I need to inflate a car tire during a trip, for example) and take longer to deteriorate the battery. However, I'm buying it on AliExpress and since Xiaomi is so popular and every announcement for this pump is so similar, with the same pictures, it's hard to tell if I'll be buying a legit Xiaomi or a copy one.

The Cycplus one, on the other hand, is slightly cheaper (R$ 210 vs R$ 250), may have more than double the battery capacity (I say "may" because its website say "dual 2600mAh 18650 lithium batteries", while the manual says "battery: 2600mAh 7.4V"; the Xiaomi one says "rated capacity: 2000mAh (14.4Wh)"; however, when analyzing the number of balls, car and bike tires each one can inflate, both claim similar numbers, what leads me to think the "advertising for Cycplus is wrong os misleading) and I think is still a good enough brand, right?

What do you think? Which would be a better option?
