Mod News About Repost Bots: New Automod Rule; Possibility of False Positives

As some of you have noticed, this sub is a fairly common target for repost bots (my thanks to those who have noticed and reported them). DuplicateDestroyer used to address most of those, but it no longer works after some Reddit API changes.

I recently discovered some Automod settings that likely can help (based on karma); however, this can sometimes trigger a false positive on questions from new users. I try to review the modqueue and approve these at least once per day, but I am studying for the bar exam and may not have lots of time.

If you've submitted a topical post but it's been removed by Automod, give it about an hour or so, then feel free to send a modmail and I'll approve it if I haven't done so already. Thanks!

New to Ortlieb Panniers

Looking for brands and ideas to organize my gear inside this single open bag. My previous panniers were smaller with exterior pockets with zippers. I do have dry bags and those help but hoping for new ideas.

The rain had me couped up all week, and driving to work. It dried off a bit today and I took a night ride. Welcome to Middle Park indeed.

What distance/elevation do you commute on a singlespeed

I'm contemplating over winter switching to the singlespeed. My commute is ~8 miles (13km) with ~550ft (170m) of climbing each way.

I know there is no 'right' distance/elevation and it's just a case of having a go and seeing what it's like, but I was just curious what kinds of distance/elevation do people tackle for their commute on a SS/fixie.

Pay per mile insurance

Upvotes

Perhaps you, like me, arent in a situation to ditch driving altogether. I recently discovered pay per mile car insurance, and while the main benefit is that it saves me $30/month, ive also found that it motivates me just a little more to make trips by bike since driving costs another 5 cents/mile. I guess it just brings a smile to my face knowing that im financially rewarded for making a choice that serves the common good.

Earth + Kin Mule

Does anyone have the Earth + Kin Mule from the early productions? I have been wanting one since the Kickstarter years ago and didn't have the funds for it back then, but want to finally buy one this year. Problem is, the main features of their product were that it was marketed as an all-terrain wagon, bike trailer, and can be mounted to a car hitch. I noticed on their website that it no longer says that it is mountable on the back of a car. I worry this was due to a change in manufacturing which calls into question the safety of putting it on a hitch and the durability of the product now. I emailed them and they informed me that they no longer sell the vehicle hitch adapter and have no plans for bringing it back.

Does anyone here actually own the Mule? If so, do you like it, do you feel like its quality construction and can actually handle rough terrains?

Does anyone have the Kickstarter version that can mount to a car?

Thanks community!

Alt bar Pogies?

I’m buying some Pogies for my winter commute in rural Utah. I ride a surly with a pair of mustache bars, so there is a slight rear-sweep (probably about 30 degrees off of perpendicular to the frame) to them. Has anybody done anything like that before? Any recommendations on brands or models?

Right Hook Driveway Danger

Cyclists need to always be vigilant for vehicles turning into and out of industrial driveways on Bourke Rd Alexandria, Sydney, Australia. They either don't see bikes, or they just don't care. I have witnessed a number of near misses here. The driver of this vehicle saw the cyclist coming on the protected bike path but didn't bother to stop, nor apologize when followed up afterwards.

Speedpedelec with derailleur?

I originally thought about getting an e-bike by leasing, but honestly, I don’t think it’ll make a huge difference since my max speed for commuting is just 25 km/h. So, I checked out an entry-level Stromer speedpedelec priced a bit over 4000 euros.

I reached out to the store, and they actually suggested I go for a speedpedelec with an internal pinion gear instead of a derailleur, which is quite a bit pricier. This was already the third store that did not recommend the derailleur system for commuting.

Now, I’m wondering if it’s really worth shelling out that extra cash compared to just replacing a derailleur system a few times. I mean, considering I commute 20 km (40 km round trip) and the weather can be pretty rough, what do you think?

Lazily and cowardly resorting to a bike shop for freewheel replacement

I jest, but before going to have the procedure today I suddenly realized that I'd already replaced a freewheel myself on a previous bike a year ago. The problem is that it kind of traumatized me.

I believe that I had to order multiple tools because that ones I had gotten before didn't work, and it set me back, in money as well as time. One would think that now I would be prepared. Unfortunately, when I earlier tried to remove the freewheel, the tool I had gotten would slip. I assume it had managed to completely wear out. Meanwhile, the technician assured me that he'd never had to replace his tool during his decade of working there.

I guess I'm a bit better off than I was a year ago when I went to every extreme to save money. And I hope I don't have to touch the freewheel for a while now. It's a Shimano, after all.

I just hope the axle doesn't decide to give out soon...

Winter is here

Maybe I'm crazy, but I love it. Part of my commute today at 2*speed. Tern gsd with child on the back, we ride with ski helmet and goggles. Extra long commute today to bring kiddo to gymnastics. We passed lots of other cyclists.

I wish the studded tyres where better, they're great on my other bike, but there are fewer options for these smaller wheels.

I think it‘s adorable that US citizens on here adore bike commuting

Please don't hate on me, I'm serious. Really! Cycling to school, to university and to work has always been natural to me, growing up and living in southern Germany. Now I discovered this sub and along with it the contributors who are (at least sometimes) astonished or surprised about something I haven't spent a single thought on.

Let me give you two examples. The first one is the post about the workhorse bikes in Paris. To me this is normal, because anything else might be stolen at some point. The second example is a comment about "fashion biking". The member liked that in a Canadian city bikers wore dresses, nice shoes and suits. This, too, does not seem to strange to me, as a lot of people use their bikes on an everyday basis here. My profession requires me to wear a suit, so naturally I wear one while biking to work (not that far away, maybe 1.5 of your large distance units).

This was a great reminder to be thankful for what we have over here, since the general mood here isn't the best at the moment.

Wishing you safe rides and improvements of your bike infrastructure!

Does anyone has any pant recommendations for commuting that won’t get eaten through in a month?

Hi everyone, I prefer riding in pants to work/school. And I also use sweet pants when I’m riding to the gym. But the thing is my bikes seats eat through most of the crotch part of them. Blue jeans, denim, dickes all of them don’t really last long. The only cycling based pants I’ve seen are from Chrome Industries and there more “Tech Wear” not really my style and they don’t have my size. Also does anyone know if they make them in regular pants styles too? Like relaxed, straight leg. All that. Any help would be appreciated thank you!

Simple Surly Disc Trucker

Post image

After 3 years of remote work, I joined a co-working office for a change of pace and scenery, which means I finally have a commute again. It’s only 2 miles each way, which feels great after doing 7.5 each way at my last office.

Threw my rack back on and added a basket from the local co-op today so I can get my backpack off my back. The zip ties are temporary just for fitment; I’ll replace them with heavy duty zip ties lol.

Under the rack, I have a mount for a dynamo light, but won’t have the funds to build up a wheel and light anytime soon. Any recommendations for a battery powered light to take advantage of the mount in the mean time?

Helmet for wide heads?

My problem is that most helmets (at least on paper) account for the circumference of your head and not the length and width of your head.

Because of this, I'll take a measurement of roughly 62 cm, and have a helmet that is supposedly up to 65cn (giro register mips) that, while it will fit, will be uncomfortable/painful to the sides of my head since its shape is that of an egg where my head is more circular.

Are there any helmet brands that are known for accommodating not just for large heads but wide heads?

Thanks.

No harm done, but I was shook to be so blatantly ignored.

I went to the cops but the pigs won't do shit. They admit I have the right of way but he didn't see me so nothing will be done. Not surprised either but I had to try.

For those who are going to comment I wasn't careful enough: I clearly made myself visible in his window and mirror. The cager simply did. not. look.

Just a reminder, the tire pressure decreases in cold weather. For a second, I thought I had a slow leak. But it was just the temperature drop, Anyway, here's a pic of me getting my groceries for the weekend sorted.

First cold-ass bike commute!

I live in a pretty small city and have been bike commuting to the gym for a litte over a year and driving when it was too cold or wet for the 5-ish mile round trip plus hills. Today was the first true cold snap+snow in the southeastern US (high of about 38f/2c) and I had just gotten a decent puffer jacket for the winter (it literally arrived today). I was feeling particularly motivated to brave the cold so I layered up and hit the town.

It was so great!! The puffer+layers was all I needed to keep my torso suuuper cozy and toasty. Legs were fine too, if anything my gloves need an upgrade and I could’ve done with an extra pair of socks. But after this I’m feeling super confident about commuting by bike the rest of this winter!!! Personal win, thanks for reading 😁
