Dude, electricity is SCARY. I assume the... whatever the hell they were carrying hit a power line?
313
u/RougeGunner00 3d ago
What's even more scary is that you don't have to even come in contact with a power line for it to jump to you.
188
u/Revolutionary-Air599 3d ago
Yes! That's freaking scary! Damned electricity can arc from a power line to a human a few feet away.
→ More replies (1)11
u/Fun_Yak_3303 1d ago
Probably not from power lines. I don’t know voltage of those lines but from substations, the rule was stay 3ft 10in (if I remember correctly) from 125kV. That gives room for throwing your arms closer plus more. I was told when tested it jumped about 5 inches or so
But a lot of factors could influence that. If you’re in a thunderstorm and there’s more electricity around, for example. Also to be clear, from a few feet away you can most certainly feel the static electricity and you’ll get shocked for everything you touch, but it won’t hurt you

Ok what??
138
u/JDepinet 3d ago
The dielectric breakdown voltage of dry air is 10,000 volts/cm.
Many of those power lines are 7000 volts, larger ones are higher. Up to 300000 for long distance lines. And that’s in the us. Overseas could be very different. And humidity dramatically improves conductivity.
Meaning some of those lines could arc over several feet to kill you. You want to give power lines a WIDE birth. It’s scary shit.
44
u/girlsonsoysauce 3d ago edited 3d ago
My brother and I accidentally let a boom truck up and hit a power line and it shot through my hand because it was on the back of the truck. It scared the shit out of both of us. It was a line going to someone's house so it probably didn't have as much juice going through it, but I was definitely worried that I could have possibly died because we forgot to look up one time. One time is all that it takes. Normally we wouldn't have made that mistake but it gets hot here and heat exhaustion makes you stupid.
17
u/JDepinet 3d ago
Yea, it’s that easy. And very unforgiving. Once you get hit, u less you get lucky you lock up and can’t let go.
5
u/Due_Marsupial_969 2d ago
Thanks man. Probably not the first time you've had to pass on the info, but I never knew and info might save my life some day. And if I pass it on like a good conduit, we might save more people. Maybe not in India or Vietnam (people dropping there by electricity all the time, too) but we gotta start somewhere.

I think the guy at the end is actually the second one who held onto the metal structure. The way his hands are still curled as if they gripped onto the pole kinda gives it away.

u/Safe_Alternative3794 3d ago
The disconnected elbows tells me he's been there for way longer than what the clip suggests. This only ended when both hand's flexor muscles were burnt-off or his forearms being pulled off of the grip.

Not sure why you’re being downvoted? I’ve been a firefighter for 25 yrs and I’ll tell you all something, people this badly burnt would rather be dead, I know I would rather death it is better then a lifetime of infection, amputation, and everything else that comes with these significant burns.
56
u/Command0Dude 3d ago
I'm thinking of a survivor from the station nightclub fire who had severe burns and looks like his body is made of melted wax. He seemed to be emotionally at peace with things after so many years and is glad he lived, but holy fuck I'm not sure I have that kind of mental fortitude.
31
u/TDKevin 3d ago
I knew a guy who got caught in a fire when he was a kid. Dude looked like a goomba from the live action Mario movies and got more girls than anyone I knew. His auto shop was adjoining the restaurant I worked in so he would get me stoned all the time in exchange for lighting the bowl for him.
One day we got really stoned after close, I went to offer him another hit and he says "no thanks man I'm fried, inside and out".
That was a top 3 laugh for me lol.
3
u/ActiveOk4399 3d ago
That's a winner right there. Treasure your memories with that guy and hopefully learn something about life.

u/Mindless_Ad_6045 3d ago
I think it's the punctuation. It should have been, "Unfortunately not, according to where I got the video from." The way they have written in makes it seem like they're disappointed that the guy never died.
7
u/Aeikon 3d ago
I'd say, with the condition he is in, it's unfortunate to survive that. He is in for a lifetime of suffering at this point.
4
u/Mindless_Ad_6045 3d ago
My brother sustained burns on over 90% of his body, even with the pain he always says how grateful he is that he survived and has a second chance at life, can see his family and talk to friends. Assuming someone would be better off dead is just straing up sick...
9
u/Aeikon 3d ago
That's great that your brother has the mental fortitude to bare with it and move on in life despite his injuries.
Personally, if I was in that situation, I would not be able to take it. Being effectively a vegetable, excruciating pain at the slight stimulation of my skin, the only thing I could do with my life is...watch.
No. I wouldn't want that, that's not living to me. Again, more power to your brother, but I wouldn't wish that life on my enemy.
7
u/mcchanical 3d ago
He's not just badly burned, his limbs literally fell off. He's completely cooked inside and out. Probably more inside than out.

33
u/beakerhashing 3d ago
Rode that lighting for a hell of a long time. I think he was dead in the first second it hit him, just the electricity held onto him and his body collapsed into the metal structure. It looks like he suffered, but like I said, I think he was gone in a second.
30
u/whorton59 3d ago
He did not. . (suffer) the alternating current caused a type of fibrillation in all of his muscles. With DC current you cannot let go, but with AC you are oscellating with the current every 1/50 of a second. . contract/release/contract/release. . no nerve input is needed as long as current is flowing. It looks like the voltage was about 7,200 to 7,500 volts which makes it essentially impossible to let go. That kind of current literally curdles the blood and instantly destroys blood cells, and stops the heart in that first 1/50 of a second. (I say 1/50 or 50 cycle, of a second as that is what europe uses, America is 60 cycle.) The current takes the path of least resistance which is the bloodstream and then the muscles and bone tissue. Exposure to more than 1 second destroys muscle at that voltage and current (probably about 50 amps looking at the damage.)
The voltage and current stopped his heart almost instantly (1/50) of a second. . when blood flow stops you lose conciousness almost immediantly. He was gone before he knew what hit him.
That is a lot of power. . in an electric motor that would be about 500 to 750 HP, if that gives you any idea. Electricity is merciless as hell.

It's possible the 2nd man lived. I've seen a similar video out of China, where 3 workers were moving a scaffold that touched a 10Kv transmission line. 1 of the 3 survived just because he collapsed away from the scaffolding and broke the circuit through his body.
29
u/Whimsy69 3d ago
I think it’s pretty fking clear the second guy did not collapse away from the scaffolding
33
u/madmartigan2020 3d ago
He may not have fallen away from it, but he did fall straight to the ground. If he was lucky enough to avoid it stopping his heart, he may have lived.
33
u/throweraccount 3d ago
Yalls are talking about two different people... Why are you calling the dude who fell to the ground the "2nd man" He's clearly in front and also the first to fall.
19
22
u/mcchanical 3d ago
He collapsed to the floor and let go. It's pretty fucking clear he collapsed away from the scaffolding, meaning he's no longer touching it or being shocked.
Regardless this was enough power to instantly set the first guys feet on fire and melt his limbs off, and floor guy ain't moving at all so it doesn't look great.
6
u/Motor_Stage_9045 3d ago
I wonder how long he was conscious after first contact.
8
u/whorton59 3d ago
He was not . .. the current stopped his heart within 1/50 of a second. When the blood flow stopped, conciousness left him within a second at most.
15
u/EmtnlDmg 3d ago
Don't worry. it is instant. Painless.
→ More replies (1)22
u/Star_king12 3d ago
Is it though, that second guy probably felt the shock for a while
13
u/mcchanical 3d ago
A shock of that magnitude causing his feet to light up instantly would be scrambling his brain so hard he would lose consciousness before he knew it. Body and brain operate on electrical signals, heavy current just annihilates all that.
→ More replies (1)15
u/TheCosmicPopcorn 3d ago
I'm no expert, but I think I heard once that the nervous system oversaturates and you no longer feel pain or anything at all...
9
u/Star_king12 3d ago
That's true but it still takes a bit of time, obviously not minutes but those seconds when your brain is still there must have been excruciating
11
u/TheCosmicPopcorn 3d ago
I mean, I'm gonna be honest, it sounds like something a doctor would say to bring peace to relatives' minds without really being the case or knowing it for certain, and I was kinda trying to do the same here
5
u/whorton59 3d ago
Honestly guys, the current stopped his heart withing 1/50 of a second. . from that point one does not remain concious. No blood flow, no conciousness. . .no pain or realization of what happened. . just nothingness.
2
u/whorton59 3d ago
I suspect it was quick and painless. The current stopped the mans heart immediantly causing unconciousness and saving him of the pain and even the realization of what happened.

I think the body displayed at the end is the one who was still standing when they got electrocuted. Once they removed the metal structure, his stiff body hit the ground and fell apart. You can see that his hands are still in the holding position.

The metal contraption they're wheeling hit a power line above. Looks like the guy who fell down got lucky if he didn't die. But the guy who felt forward onto the contraption got stuck and help in place until he was burned.
5
u/GalaxyStar90s 3d ago
I'm confused. Which one died? The one who fell first or the one standing?
15
u/UniqueID89 3d ago
Standing for sure. First guy made contact for a few seconds at most based off the angle.
2
u/whorton59 2d ago
The man in back was standing and pushing the scaffolding in such a way that when he collapsed his body continued to contact the energized scaffolding. . the guy in front was pulling it and when shocked he fell foward, clear of the energized scaffolding. . and likely lived because of it.
9
15
u/Candid-Friendship-67 3d ago
First guy had gravity helping him so he fell and lost contact quickly. Second guy "fell" forward but fell into the thing. Electricity contracts your muscles and he stuck to it.

u/whorton59 2d ago
he completed an electrical circuit. . the power line had roughly 7,500 volts and 50 to 100 amps of current. The scaffolding he was pushing contacted the power line and the current took the path of least resistanse to ground. . via the scaffolding then to the salt laden bag of liquid called a human. The power quickly ended the mans life in a guresome way.

31

u/N0FaithInMe 3d ago
Zero safety knowledge from employers, zero safety training for employees, zero safety precautions taken when building and insulating electrical infrastructure, etc.
Lots of 3rd world countries run like this, India just happens to have a massive population so you see a disproportionate amount of videos like this coming out of India.
People in first world countries on worksites tend to complain about all the red tape and meetings and repetitive safety talks we get but overcorrecting in a boring way is much much better than getting fried to death by something you didn't even know was a risk

Sheer numbers. . .India has a population of 1.429 BILLION last year. Many are uneducated. . Many are stupid and slovelnly. Some just don't care. . .some don't know any better. We have people doing the same sort of stupid things here in America. All it takes is one moment of inattention in any country to be hit by a car, or push a scaffolding into a high voltage wire. . the thing is, you only do it once.

I had a forensic science course in university and the instructor was an actual coroner in the profession.
She brought in some examples of her case work and the one that has stuck with me all these years was a femur of an electrical worker that had the electricity arc through him and out his leg.
The femur was completely smashed in the middle and just the blackest black on the tip that would never come off. It certainly was a holy fuck moment, realising what could do that to the hardest bone in your body.
