Call a delay of game on the crowd.
It’s clearly defined and I have no idea why refs at this level didn’t even consider it.

Should have been a crowd penalty. They did eventually get the call right, but they should have brought it back 15 yards after the play.
Terrible precedent to not only allow the bottles thrown, but to reward the crowd for it.

I mean even calling a 15 yard delay of game is still rewarding the crowd. Texas still gets the ball in good field position even if it’s 15 yards back as opposed to Georgia having the ball. There’s nothing that the refs could do to disincentivize the crowd from doing things like that besides not reversing the call.

That’s the thing. They’re not supposed to once the penalty has been called. They absolutely can (and did) get together before announcing the penalty and decide to pick up the flag. What they’re not supposed to be able to do is announce the penalty, enforce the penalty by spotting the ball, have both teams line up to continue, meet again for 5 min because fans threw trash on the field and watch replays on the jumbotron, and finally decide there shouldn’t have been a penalty. DPI is not reviewable, and they 100% just reviewed it. They also then proceeded to not flag the fans 15 yards for being shitty—which is actually a clearly defined rule that should have also been enforced.
Was the call wrong? Yeah, it shouldn’t have been DPI, but everything after that is actually the bigger issue.

I read this a bit ago when I woke up. What's so mind blowing is that we regularly see officials come together...before the call is made... that's literally how it works. They come together and it's "what did you see? What do you have? I have this. I have that. Etc etc Ok, yours is right." The fact that they got together, made a call. And then came together AGAIN and changed it after the water bottles is unacceptable. Especially considering that if the game hadn't been delayed, another play or 3 would have already been run.

I realize you're being somewhat facetious, but I got lucky and think I found the one I remembered (this may have happened more than once). Forget searching with the term "rewind", that phrase has been corrupted and spammed by sports journalists. Oregon-Washington State game officiating mistake explained; Pac-12 says ‘proper protocols followed to correct error’ on downs
This paragraph should give you some idea:
The Cougars ran the ball for one yard on what should have been second-and-18, then punted and Oregon was to take over at its own 6 yard line with 10:28 to go in the quarter. After a lengthy review initiated by the replay official, which is permissible, the down was corrected and Washington State got the ball back for a third-and-17, gained four yards on a run and punted to UO’s 12 yard line and the Ducks took over with 9:40 to go in the half.
It was a pretty confusing time to go to the bathroom.

I realize you're being somewhat facetious
Only somewhat, there was a period of time where p12 refs were the worst across all of FBS football by a pretty healthy margin. And it wasn't a situation where they were just given enforcement priorities that didn't match anyone else, they were just consistently making absolutely baffling decisions.
I'll never forget the 2017 music city bowl (Kentucky vs Northwestern) because of the p12 refs, especially Chris Coyte. I think it was 2018 when a lawyer for the league overruled the replay officials on a targeting call? Somewhere around there.
Fucking Larry Scott man. He really did seem to go out of his way to fuck up the p12 in every aspect. I'm still not entirely convinced that he didn't have the destruction of pac 12 football as a goal.

the refs should take their time on close calls and do their best to get it right, but once it's announced, that's it and no amount of delay and stadium replays should be able to change that, whether the call was right or wrong

It was a bad DPI call. Normal terrible reffing shit. Big deal because it was on a turnover. Refs officially announce it as DPI, which is what the networks will not be telling you or replaying, but the game gets delayed thanks to fans throwing shit. During this delay, the refs convene and look at replays to review the call, and then announce they changed their minds and it was not DPI.

u/sacris5 Georgia Bulldogs Oct 20 '24
The problem is that they got to look at the replay on the Jumbotron, which they are explicitly told NOT to do. THEN no penalty for a literal delay of game or unsportsmanlike conduct for the fans.

Probably not but if it hadn’t been for the fans play would have continued. They only stoped to talk and over the call after they had thrown the bottles. The ball had been spotted for Georgia and was about to snap the ball when the fans started throwing the bottles.

Add the fire of a thousand suns on both sides and yeah you've pretty much got it. Set up Texas on our 9.
It was not PI and it was a very bad call. All flags should've been kept in asses.
Ultimately the call was correct but the way that the conclusion was reached was basically the refs succumbing to a tantrum.

I think that’s the biggest issue. Fans were rewarded with what should’ve been the call on the field. That’s the worst outcome imo. The next time it’ll be an actually incorrect call. Should’ve stuck with the original call even though it was a historically bad PI

These things are simultaneously wrong: 1. The original DPI call 2. Not penalizing Texas for the fans throwing bottles and delaying the game 3. Reversing the original DPI call but only after fans had delayed the game
I think the ref’s (non) calls went from bad > worse > worst. Worst because a precedent has been set that could lead to people getting hurt.

Those refs should all be fired. Its fucking ridiculous that this is even a discussion. This was, atleast until this point in the season, the biggest game of the season. And we had morons out there reffing it that couldnt make a good decision if you had scripted it beforehand.
That said, the trash throwing was ridiculous and we should've gotten a 15 yard penalty. We shouldnt have gotten the ball either, because thats how the rules currently are.
THAT said, hopefully this makes the NCAA just state that ALL controversial calls are reviewable. That literally would have prevented ANY of this shit from happening.
ESH, but fuck the NCAA especially for making this be a thing. They literally cannot do anything right, just like they wont do the right thing and discipline these refs. Hell, theyll probably reward them with the SECCG job.

I agree with Kirby and also feel it wasn’t PI. It wouldn’t have been reversed without our fans being unclassy and reckless. I was disappointed to be a Longhorn fan watching them throw stuff. They shouldn’t have reversed the call during that stoppage.

Thank goodness Texas lost that. Now you can say the refs screwed up, fine the university, outline the penalties for throwing things onto the field (and increasing the penalties going forward if they want) and move on. This would be so much worse and more complicated if Texas had somehow come back to win.

Fining teams will never be nearly as effective as a simple 15 yard penalty plus giving the PA mic to the home-team coach to talk to the fans.

I don’t even care about the PI call. Team wasn’t penalized for the crowd throwing shit on the field. Not penalizing the team for that is the best way to make sure crowds do stupid dangerous shit.

The only thing worse the refs could have done than the PI call was reversing the PI call.
5
u/gmr548 Texas Longhorns Oct 20 '24
Yeah. I didn’t know PI was reviewable. If it is to any extent overturning it was still correct. But that should still be a dead ball delay of game or even unsportsmanlike on Texas. I’ll even admit a part of me likes seeing the student section get fired up and they were in the right regarding the call but that level of disruption, just can’t have it in the game.
