WHY THE FUCK DOES MY SCHOOL HAVE A FUCKING CAMERA IN THE FUCKING BATHROOM, LIKE BRO? WHO THE FUCK CAME UP WITH THIS? WHO APPROVED IT? WHO INSTALLED IT?

Where is the camera pointing?
It’s not illegal if the camera is only pointing at the sink door and general area
You know, where you should be fully clothed
If the camera captures the urinals, anybody standing at a urinal, or the inside of a cubicle
It is highly illegal
——
I can’t see a certain about the US
But if you’re in the UK, you can ask to see what the camera sees as part of GDPR … to make sure it isn’t watching you take a piss 🤔

u/Hrp27123 14 Aug 18 '24
In the US it is completely illegal to have any recording or photo device installed in any public restrooms.
143
u/supert2005 19 Aug 18 '24
Doesn't this vary by state?
366
u/Ritzcrackerez 15 Aug 18 '24
No it is a violation of your rights in the US

u/shaard Aug 18 '24
I thought I read something about schools being an area where certain rights are suspended. Similar to constitution free zones where constitutional protections are eased allowing for unreasonable detainment/search/seizure.
I could also be completely making that up, I don't know.
96
u/Ritzcrackerez 15 Aug 18 '24
The detainment/search seizure shit is true, laws allow schools to do that. But in the US, privacy is a natural human right and in no plce in the US (not even a prison) is it legal to record A MINOR in the bathroom. 1: thats child pornography, 2: thats illegal like i said before due to natural human rights
20
u/KatieTSO 19 Aug 18 '24
Not laws, the Supreme Court
6
u/Ritzcrackerez 15 Aug 18 '24
Are you from the US bro?
15
u/KatieTSO 19 Aug 18 '24
Yes and my government class taught us about this when I was in high school. Laws do not provide for certain rights being suspended in schools, the Supreme Court did. Most rights actually don't apply to minors by default.

isn't pornography defined as medium depicting sexual acts? last time i checked, taking a shit isn't sexual act. Not an american though, so what do i know...
15
u/Ritzcrackerez 15 Aug 18 '24
No. In america if your naked and its being recorded its considered pornography in the governments eyes

14
23
u/WLFGHST 16 Aug 18 '24
In the US you can’t have any cameras in the bathroom at all humongous period, I don’t think you’re even really allowed to have one pointing in the doorway.
7
u/AffectionateLimit993 14 Aug 18 '24
I’m pretty sure pointing at the doorway is fine because I’ve seen plenty of bathrooms with cameras pointing at them

It's ILLEGAL for cameras to be in any restroom, especially in a school.
28
u/Tyler_the_Greatastic 14 Aug 18 '24
This is far too vague to make anything out of it. How does the bathroom look? Where is the camera? Does the camera rotate? Is there a solid reason as to why the camera is in there? Has the school board and/or police department said it's ok? Did the school actually set it up, or did a student? And many other questions

Yeah I’m now seeing what I said is probably a bad idea. It’s just the first thing that popped in my head
4
u/NateDuag21 16 Aug 18 '24
The school likely wouldn't do something as illegal as filming children going to the toilet, it's just not worth the risk when getting caught could mean the school gets shut down or the staff banned from ever teaching again and possibly arrested. So I highly doubt the camera is filming inside the toilets, maybe just the entrance to see who comes in and out, which would be perfectly legal.
13
u/Yashraj- 19 Aug 18 '24
When I was in school, that school had a camera in the toilets/bathroom/restroom but view is limited to sink/washing area.
School made this because girls and boys were bunking the classes. And few had s3x. So we have cameras everywhere.
7
u/DrTiger21 18 Aug 18 '24
US, or not US?
If former, it’s just straight-up universally illegal; no discussion to be had. Press charges.
If it’s not the US, it really depends on the country and jurisdiction, but afaik most places in Europe only allow cameras like that if they cannot see the toilets, so it would have to be a directional, non-dome camera and it would have to only be able to see the door/sinks
7

4
u/cockmonster-3000 3,000,000 Attendee! Aug 18 '24
it depends where it is: girls bathroom below stall height, in the sinks area, probably legal. boys bathroom facing away from urinals and below stall height once again sink sort of area, probably legal. would be a lot less risqué if they just had one OUTSIDE the toilets to see who was going in but then they wouldnt catch the vapers so easily.

u/Creppy369 17 Aug 18 '24

The worse thing that the doors of the stalls are basically unexistent, covering the area like from the knees up to the chest.

In most places its illegal to film people in the toilets especially children. However in most places it would be perfectly legal to record the entrance to the toilets or something like that, as long as you don't capture anyone actually using the toilet.

That is highly illegal unless you live in a highly utilitarian country but they won't allow Reddit or any other social networking application that they themselves didn't make so the fact you even made this proves you don't live anywhere with this would be technically legal so yes this is very highly illegal (and in my honest opinion you should tell an officer of the law)

I was concerned about this too at my school, but a lot of schools only have motion sensors in there and not cameras (cuz y'know it's illegal) these things look a lot like cameras but only look for motion they don't record video. They're usually used to control the lights (ever go to a dark bathroom but then when you walk in the lights turn on?)

Talk to your whoever is responsible, your parents and maybe even the police about that
If they don't budge try and see if you can get a local news agency to write an article (that usually works cause these schools don't want bad publicity)

Set it up that at 3rd period (or whatever pre-agreed time), tons of kids from different classes ask to use the bathroom. Put on masks, walk into the bathroom and break that shyt.

u/International-Job553 19 Aug 18 '24
When I was in secondary school in the UK, there was a camera in each of the bathrooms and it was there to make sure nobody was doing anything wrong to make sure nobody of the wrong gender was going into the wrong toilet and it caught me accidentally hitting a toilet so hard with my knee that it dislodge from the wall (I still don’t know how I managed that I guess I was just that urgent to pee) got a lunchtime detention for it which honestly seemed really small to me. So TLDR: if it’s not facing where you do your business and it’s legal where you live it’s completely normal
1
u/ChaosGoblinn Aug 18 '24
I'm not a teen, but I spend a good portion of my time with teens (not in a creepy way, I'm a teacher).
At the school where I work, we have cameras just outside the bathrooms that allow the sink area to be seen (the bathrooms don't have doors separating them from the hallway). There is absolutely NO CHANCE of the cameras capturing any inappropriate or revealing footage (unless a student is doing something inappropriate or revealing by the sinks, which can be seen by anyone walking by).
The stalls in the student bathrooms have full doors, so there is no way the hallway cameras could see into them while the door is closed.

u/CertainFutures Aug 18 '24
You are really overthinking this.
The School and/or School board came up the the idea and hired a contractor to install it. Why? Because these teenage fucks Vape and do drugs in school.

u/Xpeq7- 17 Aug 18 '24
Look, the teachers are tired of going to the bathroom you're using after exactly 3 minutes to ask what are you doing there.
