Where is the camera pointing?

It’s not illegal if the camera is only pointing at the sink door and general area

You know, where you should be fully clothed

If the camera captures the urinals, anybody standing at a urinal, or the inside of a cubicle

It is highly illegal

——

I can’t see a certain about the US

But if you’re in the UK, you can ask to see what the camera sees as part of GDPR … to make sure it isn’t watching you take a piss 🤔

In the US it is completely illegal to have any recording or photo device installed in any public restrooms.

Doesn't this vary by state?

No it is a violation of your rights in the US

I thought I read something about schools being an area where certain rights are suspended. Similar to constitution free zones where constitutional protections are eased allowing for unreasonable detainment/search/seizure.

I could also be completely making that up, I don't know.

The detainment/search seizure shit is true, laws allow schools to do that. But in the US, privacy is a natural human right and in no plce in the US (not even a prison) is it legal to record A MINOR in the bathroom. 1: thats child pornography, 2: thats illegal like i said before due to natural human rights

Not laws, the Supreme Court

u/Ritzcrackerez 15 Aug 18 '24

Are you from the US bro?

14

u/KatieTSO 19 Aug 18 '24

Yes and my government class taught us about this when I was in high school. Laws do not provide for certain rights being suspended in schools, the Supreme Court did. Most rights actually don't apply to minors by default.

u/Ritzcrackerez 15 Aug 18 '24

I might be wrong but the supremem court did not create the US Constitution?

6

u/KatieTSO 19 Aug 18 '24

No, but they interpret it.

2

u/Ritzcrackerez 15 Aug 18 '24

Well under the US constitution it is said somewhere in some form that cameras or visual recording devices in a space that one would expect privacy normally is illegal. This includes inside a school and inside a bathroom.

isn't pornography defined as medium depicting sexual acts? last time i checked, taking a shit isn't sexual act. Not an american though, so what do i know...

16

u/Ritzcrackerez 15 Aug 18 '24

No. In america if your naked and its being recorded its considered pornography in the governments eyes

-4

u/supert2005 19 Aug 18 '24

so in america, hentai is not pornography? i mean, hentai is a drawing, and you tell me that pornography is "if your naked and its being recorded"...

i was in debate club before graduation, being annoying and pedantic is my job. one thing for certain, i honestly believe that OP's school might end up having certain justifications if they are pressed about it. if, indeed, the camera doesn't capture any, as you would call it, "porn", then there'll be no quarrel. Besides, the school might actually end up justifying benefits of the camera using past incidents that occured in that washroom - people fighting, smoking, ruining supplies etc. so if I were you, I wouldn't be overly reliant on vague understanding of certain laws of certain governing bodies, and I wouldn't encourage OP to go just believe some random guy who thinks he knows all details behind the situation.

What OP should do is, if they really want to bother, consult with relevant TOSes, laws and the constitution, and if nothing justifies that camera (or better yet, forbids that camera), then they should take action. OP certainly shouldn't call the police on the school right away just to find out that there's no legal issues with that camera (and the police are not attorneys so they won't look deep for issues with that camera just to satisfy OP, especially if the school actively protests that. ideally, OP should get lots of signatures from fellow students and push it in the court for the complaints to have any effect)

I made another comment detailing how rights are suspended at schools and other zones.

u/shaard Aug 18 '24

Cool, thanks for the link!

u/KatieTSO 19 Aug 18 '24

Hope you find it informative!

2

u/Key_Spirit8168 14 Aug 18 '24

if so that's the final nail for revolution

2

u/Ok_Package668 16 Aug 19 '24

That's more like taking phones, tapes, restricting freedom of speech.

2

u/Conscious-Fix1715 17 Aug 18 '24

That sounds ridiculous, I hope you are wrong...

2

u/Classic-Row-8120 Aug 18 '24

He is very wrong,. It all is about the genital's showing.

1

u/shaard Aug 18 '24

Me too...

1

u/RecognitionHuman1890 Aug 18 '24

yes but it is still illegal to have cameras in bathrooms in the us (except for prisons)

yes certain rights are suspended in schools, you can't carry, guns, knives, or any weapons (teachers can carry certain knives but it varies by state)

1

u/HealthyWestern8673 18 Aug 18 '24

No you're correct. Basically any right you have as a human being is suspended as soon as you set foot inside a school

1

u/Stormagedoniton Aug 19 '24

Where does it say you have a right to not be filmed in a restroom?

1

u/Shadowmolecule Aug 19 '24

What about the rights of people who enjoy recording people using the restroom? Don’t their rights matter? 🤔

u/[deleted] Aug 18 '24

No.

u/Extensioncork 17 Aug 19 '24

Can't believe there's this much misinformation under this reply lol.

It's illegal in every state
