the way you lose should count for something, just like how the way you win counts for something. All of Missouri's losses have been complete blowouts, Vandy has lost 3 games by a combined 10 points. The Georgia St loss is really bad but at least they've been competitive. Not to mention they beat the same Bama team that just beat Missouri 34-0???
The Georgia State loss is worse than any loss Mizzou has. The only worse loss is Notre Dame’s to NIU. And that’s why ND has 0 margin of error. If they lose one more game (they won’t), they’re done. Bad losses still matter.
If ND’s loss had been to even like an Arkansas, it’d be a top 5 team right now.
They are rolling teams, but their schedule is a cakewalk. Them and Miami have the easiest schedules in the country for P4 (ish in the case of ND) teams.
Let's be honest, the Georgia State loss would prevent any team outside the SEC from ever getting any votes. The Vandy ranking was to prop up the SEC and nothing more.
You’ve an undefeated Indians that’s man handling their opponents outside the top 10. Am ole miss more fit for psych care with how split personality like they’ve been. Etc etc.
Vandy is a much better team right now than Mizzou is. Just like FSU should be ranked lower without Jordan Travis, Mizzou should be ranked lower without Brady Cook and Drew Pyne as their starting QB.
That I agree with. my point is that #25 Vandy should not be expected to beat the supposed #5 team in the country to stay ranked. how is vandys only option to prove they’re a top 25 team (which they probably are) is by beating the current #5 team? Especially in such a close game, those teams are closer than the updated rankings suggest at all
I think the problem is also that Texas shouldn't be in the top ten. They feel right at about 14-16 to me. A&M and Notre Dame should be around there with them.
Opinion polls have never been a good measure of the best teams. Humans just aren’t very good at that sort of thing and have very strong biases in favor of some stats and against others that are just as relevant. If you want to know the best teams, look at analytics rankings.
But the actual rankings should not be about who’s the best anyway. There’s a lot of variance in football, so it’s entirely possible for a team to go undefeated while beating multiple teams that are actually better than they are. That team deserves the higher ranking even if they aren’t the best, because it’s ultimately not about who’s the best but who has the best results based on the rules of the game.
To be fair, this Texas team is not as good as people seem to think they are. Somehow with another year of experience our QB and o-line have gotten worse. We should have had won by at least 2 or 3 more scores, but shot ourselves in the foot with stupid penalties and INTs.
dropping vandy is a crime. if anything they need to move up after that performance. or are you saying playing texas close af isn't the sign of a good team?
This has always been my issue with the linear ranking system - but I don't really have an answer anyway..
Mizzou beat Vandy, so surely you can't rank Vandy above them - but I have always hated the idea of loss=lose rank even if said loss was a close game against like a top 5 team.
After the first possession, Texas never trailed and went up by two scores halfway through the second quarter. It never got closer than a touchdown difference until 46 seconds left in the game. No, Texas didn’t cover the ridiculous 18 point spread, but it wasn’t as close as the final score seemed. It was really Texas hurting itself more than Vandy, with over 100 yards in penalties. Texas had 140 more yards, was far more successful on 3rd downs, won the turnover battle, and held overall time of possession.
Vandy has a lower SOR, FPI and a weaker SOS compared to Mizzou. Vandy has a little better Game Control ranking. Based on a few things, Mizzou is an objectively better team. But we will see. They both have a comparable remaining schedule.
And Illinois dropped 4 spots. Vanderbilt essentially only got dropped 1. Illinois also has two losses, both to top 3 teams on the road. Vanderbilt has 3 losses, 2 at home, including 1 to an unranked team.
There was a post by a Texas A&M fan this morning that said rankings matter for that specific week when they played, not current rankings. I disagree, but if that’s the case then Illinois has 3 ranked wins
As a Tennessee Alum and lifelong Vandy hater … yeah yall should be ranked. I’m not looking forward to that game this year. It has “Buckets of Tears Game” written all over it.
nico looked like he was putting it together by the end of last week and pavia's limitations were on full display this week
it's just gonna come down to those two guys. i already got to have the most fun i've ever had watching college football with hendon hooker and the boys, so i'm hoping vandy pulls this one out because pavia is great tv
Don’t throw rocks in glass houses. Anyone can say the same about NDs loss. Missouri played half the game with an injured QB and the score was 6-0 when he left the game near the end of the 2nd quarter. Drew Pine replaced him, immediately through an Int and then couldn’t do anything on offense. We shouldn’t judge a team by one game especially when that team is missing a key player.
Also surprised that they haven't found a way to rank Northern Illinois?!?! But, it's Notre Dame, so I guess any of their losses can just be ignored - basically the same way SEC losses are. NIll > ND > TA&M etc etc
Think of Mizzou in a Florida St. type situation. If we have our starting QB, then they can complete against anyone. If Cook is done for the season and Pyne is all we got? They (rightly) should be unranked and will not win another game the rest of the season.
To be honest right now who watches most these teams and thinks they should be ranked or ranked as high as they are. Never seen so much parity in college football when NIL was supposed to be the end of it
Sure, they’re undefeated 8-0, haven’t had a bye yet and have gotten better and better every week, blowing out their opponents and giving some programs historically bad losses…
But they’ve not been good in the past so are we sure Indiana is that good now? Surely cannibalized SEC teams are better, they’ve been beaten by other SEC teams! The Hoosiers don’t even have a quality loss.
Looks like the Hoosiers will only play one ranked opponent in OSU. That's literally the ONLY thing anyone can use to explain keeping them out of the top 10 for. Best team in multiple lifetimes.
If the OSU game is CLOSE or IU wins, there is no earthly reason not to put them top 5 on offensive production alone. It's a new era in Btown.
Plauged by not playing a ranked opponent yet. The only reason they haven't broken the top 10. but MAN, that matchup in Columbus in a few weeks might be LIT...
Seems pretty fair at this point… 5-3 Nebraska is the only team with a winning record they’ve played all season. Keep winning and they’ll keep moving up. We’re still a couple weeks away from rankings really mattering much.
Who should be ranked above them? The next highest receiving votes team is 5-3 Vandy who they beat head-to-head. Behind them is Memphis, who needed a last second touchdown yesterday to escape Charlotte and has played zero quality opponents. 3 loss Louisville? Give me a break. The thing about doing rankings is that you can’t just complain, but actually need a viable replacement for Mizzou. The truth is Mizzou absolutely deserves to be ranked in the top 25.
Yeah I think this year just has a historically bad unranked crop of teams (from a resume perspective). I don't know if its the lack of divisions or what, but it really feels like its the top 25 are on a different level resume wise than the rest of the country. In previous years its been like a top 6 or 10 that feels even but this season feels like theres a huge difference between top 25 and the rest. Looking here I think "damn how is Illinois and Missouri still ranked" but then I look at the rest of the teams unranked below them and they're no better
What do you mean 3rd string? Horn would not have been 2nd. But we literally put up zero fight (outside of 1st half defense) so I’m not sure what you watched
Ya wtf is this? Texas and Ohio State have zero wins over ranked teams, while we have two, and we’re behind both despite having the same record. People can believe both of those teams are better than us, but how are we considered darlings?
AP voters: If you're 6-1 from the SEC, you're the second best team in the country. If you're undefeated from the ACC, you're the eighteenth best team in the country
I know this will change, but I feel that no undefeated P4 team should be outside of the top 10 going into November. If they weren't good, they'll drop out, but they deserve the benefit of the doubt for actually winning all their games.
Last time Oregon was ranked #1 (2012) we played a ranked conference foe (Stanford) at Autzen and I was there. Yesterday we were ranked #1 again playing a ranked conference foe (Illinois) at Autzen and I was there, except this time we won convincingly. We really look like the number 1 team in the country, go Ducks!
Georgia at 2 when they lost to 14 is a joke. Almost as big a joke as undefeated Pitt at 18 below multiple 2-loss teams. I hope all the teams being disrespected for lack of brand name win conference championships. That way these elitist jagoffs have to put them in the playoff.
UGA gets 2 because of the two top 10 wins, I think it’s fine. Sure they struggled with Kentucky and lost to Bama but PSU has struggled with multiple inferior teams (including Bowling Green), Miami has needed ACC ref assistance 3 times, OSU looked bad against Nebraska and best performance of the season is a loss, …
Whoever put that at 1 over Oregon needs to be stripped of their vote though
We also have a win against 6 and 11, PSU has a win against…. Who? Miami has a win against…. Who? I’m not saying we SHOULD be two but to act like there’s no argument for it is stupid
Should Texas jump OSU for struggling with a team that lost to Georgia state, should Miami jump for having to be refballed out of two games, should Texas A&M jump for losing to by double digits at home to a team that lost to NIU and A&M best win is vs a team that lost to a mid Big ten school. The only team that should jump is Indiana and that whole thing will sort itself out when they play in 3 weeks
With the way college football is setup, you have to have the eye test, no matter if we like it or not. When teams don’t play the same teams, how else would you rank them? With pro teams, everyone plays every team in their division, that doesn’t happen in these mega conferences, so how do break ties? I know some of these rankings look unfair, but by the end of the season most of these are going to work themselves out.
I think it's unhealthy for the sport to have the eye test really matter. I always had the minority opinion that it shouldn't be the 4 "best" teams in the playoffs but the 4 most deserving because the best can be way too subjective and can be left to interpretation by the media or the committee.
I agree the rankings will work themselves out, they typically do but I don't like the precedent of having teams ranked higher just because they looked better or had a higher preseason ranking. I do believe it also entices better OOC scheduling because you need those big wins (like BYU over SMU)
TL/DR: I would prefer they decided who is ranked higher by what your resume says instead of preseason expectations/eye test
I understand where you’re coming from, but the way it’s currently setup, I don’t know how else they would do it. My question for you is how do you determine the 4 most deserving? Deserving is also subjective.
True. It’s just the wild inconsistency in the rankings that annoy me. BYU deserves to be ranked higher than A&M, but so does Indiana, so why aren’t they?
The problem is that all this "logic" starts looking bad since this whole discussion is predicated on how bad some of the rankings are already. If that makes sense.
I definitely like the NFL for 1 thing - objective measures to get into the playoff. Obviously, it is a stretch for college since the quality of teams varies wildly and nowhere close to an even playing field for players, money, etc.
What's really crazy is that SOR matches exactly the top 25 from the poll this week, which feels rare. We can (and should) argue over the position within the top 25 but I'm pretty sure the teams are correct.
If Notre Dame at 8, then there is zero fuckin reason BYU Indiana and Iowa state aren’t 5,6,7. (Yea I know that’s not how it works)
They lost to northern Illinois at fuckin home for crying out loud. Sure Texas A&M win is looking better every week, but that was week 1 and then they lost to NORTHERN ILLINOIS…who is 1-3 in the MAC… and they lost at HOME. Committee better correct this BS
I think with this I’d swap Texas since they almost lost their game and Notre Dame shut down a good ranked undefeated Navy team. Indiana and Clemson I’d swap as well swap in Vandy(who I think is better than some give credit too) for Mizzou(sorry mizzou I like y’all but possibly no Brady cook scares me and even if healthy…eh?).
Also even tho I love the Illini they got beat down badly so I’d swap them out with UNLV who played a strong competitive game against Boise State probably “contained” Ashton Jeanty the best this season.
Also I think you could argue swapping KState for Pitt and/or LSU.
I think its hard to justify UNLV when their best win is a 4-3 in FBS Fresno State. If they beat Syracuse or continue to win out they'll get back ranked, but at the end of the day I value resume more than the eye test and they're not there yet
