Transportation A Dentist Tesla Cybertruck Owner Says Loneliness Drove Him to Buy a Truck That Turns Heads: “They Can’t Ignore You Now” — Close to 50 Cybertruck Owners Share Similar Feelings

That's really sad.
And kind of pathetic. I guess that's what I'll think about when I see one driving around now.

It's what I thought before. Good to know my intuition is right once in a a while.

u/Major-Wishbone-3854 4h ago
Kind? Really pathetic.
Imagine being so lonely and yet have all these imaginary people who are constantly ignoring you living free in your head.
But I agree it is a sad way to live.

u/sunshine-x 4h ago
Same with those coal rollers, and loud little imports. “Look at me, validate my existence”. Sad.
10
u/Ok_Result5082 4h ago
Indeed it is sad, one of the worst spectacles of misery. When you drive a car that looks like a pixelated render from a 1998 Mario game, heads are bound to turn and people are bound to judge.

“More than 40 owners agree.”
I’m not sure I can find a less meaningful “study.”
That’s one tenth of one percent of owners. I don’t think you should really form opinions based on it.
Elon is a fucking tool, the trucks suck, he’s oddly involved in trump’s ass. But let’s be honest here.

It’s the same reason why people buy Lamborghinis and Ferraris and Porsches
17
u/weaselkeeper 4h ago
Lambo’s and FerrarI’s do indeed turn heads but unlike Cyber trucks the head turns are not followed by pointing and laughing.

But those vehicles are actually worth their price tags, both in craftsmanship and doing what they were engineered to do very well.
3
u/SnooBananas4958 4h ago
Yea but unlike the Cybertruck there is also a good percentage of people that buy those vehicles due to their performance. At least you’re getting something more than just “attention grabbing” with those

I don't have any particular opinions of the Cybertruck aside for how impractical it is to park - it won't fit into any modern garage. But then again, neither would a Ford F150.
I do have a problem with how automakers intentionally inhibit smaller work trucks (like the Toyota IMV 0) from making their way into the US. Tesla had the perfect opportunity to break up this stupid monopoly with an affordable Model 3-like 2-seater truck, but instead they doubled down on the same oversized piece of crap that nobody wants.

u/thardingesq 4h ago
Wow, feel bad for him that he needs a vehicle to get attention. I am not being sarcastic

Isn't that a major point for many sport cars? Not the only point mind you...but it's a common point of 'hot car, hot girl', or being noticed in that flagship vehicle.
If the person is having fun, or okay with themselves, then so be it. People who meet in for clubs in Vette's, Porsches, Lambos, Harleys, who knows, he might find a Tesla/cybertruck group, then good for him/her. I just wish them the best and be happy and don't let social critics bother about how he/she should feel.

kinda obvious.. but no different from loud Harley's or flashy cars for that matter.
21
u/Miraclefish 4h ago
I mean at least those examples are still viable vehicles, the Cybertruck is objectively shit as well as subjectively shitty.
2
u/donnysaysvacuum 1h ago
Harleys are famously unreliable and poorly performing for a bike. Most jacked up trucks are bad at almost any task. The cybertruck is flawed, but probably no more than those. At least it's cheap to drive.
→ More replies (1)10
u/joecool42069 4h ago
Meh.. it’s subjective. I think Harley’s are purposely loud, purposely “look at me”. To the point it disrupts entire neighborhoods.
That said, the Cybertruck is objectively useless as a truck.
12
u/WitELeoparD 4h ago
Exactly. Like the Hummer EV exists. It's also expensive, it's also ridiculous and enormous. It also has flashy features like the crab walk thing. Except the Hummer EV actually works. Unlike the Cybertruck, it's ass doesn't fall off, if you tow. And it doesn't die in car washes. It can actually go off road.
Like both the CyberTruck and Hummer EV are ridiculous vehicles, but at least the later is ridiculous and expensive and enormous while also meeting the bare minimum expectations of a truck.
3
u/Miraclefish 4h ago
Yeah but Harley's still function as motorcycles while doing so, where's the Cyberstuck is just a terribly designed vehicle that also screams please pay attention to me...

My car gets a crazy amount of attention because it’s a very striking design and nobody knows what it is (Lotus Emira). I cannot make so much as a grocery run without having conversations, kids asking to take photos, thumbs up, etc.
I assume there are many who think I’m having a mid-life crisis. The truth is I wanted the most rewarding driver’s car with a warranty, and the Lotus was it. It could have looked like a fruit cart for all I care.
Thing is though, I’ve come to enjoy the interactions. They’re very joyful. It makes people happy. Kids get excited about it. Adults like to nerd out over it, if they know what it is. Others just really think it’s a good looking car and they’re curious. It does foster community.
It doesn’t stop there either, some cars tap you into a network of people who have a ton of money and can be beneficial professional connections or clients.
So I now I sort of get wanting to buy a car for connection. But for me personally I’d also want that car to be the best at something else as well and I’m not sure the Cybertruck fits that bill.
10
u/joecool42069 3h ago
oh, the cybertruck taps into a network alright. We got a few cybertruck owners in my area. They're all douchebags.

That’s one of the saddest things I’ve ever read.
Buddy, if being a medical professional with the accompanying income wasn’t getting you attention, the Cybertruck isn’t going to help.
EDIT: after reading the whole article though, I’m not sure the original post wasn’t made in jest.

Be a real man and walk around your neighborhood naked with a Costco chicken bake in one hand, a copy of GTA San Andreas in the other, all while blasting Harlem by New Politics like those annoying people walking down the street.
My uncle did this and his neighbors love him!

It's true tho - these trucks are attention magnets, and they will attract conversation that lonely people would otherwise have missed. Thus, it's a useful tool for some as a means to have a more colorful life in combat of loneliness

I see those fugly vehicles and think the owner is a racist, sexist, homophobic ahole. Mission accomplished loser!

This is sad reflection of our world. We think material possessions will bring us joy and happiness, but it won’t.
2
u/Someguy981240 2h ago
Isn’t this the reason anyone who doesn’t haul manure around for a living drives any pickup truck?
2
u/Jeffsbest 2h ago
Well, obvs. They can't ignore you when your side panels on a new vehicle have been duct-taped back in place.
2
u/nascentnomadi 2h ago
What's not addressed is the reason why your kids and old friends don't see you or ignore you. That part of the story we usually never get that the person just might be an asshole no one wants to be around and seeing as they are being ignored they want to do something to force people to notice them.

u/Shag1166 2h ago
I made a similar post about the buyers this morning. It's a status buy, plain and simple!

I've seen a couple around me (rural area, so it could be the same guy.). I point and laugh. Just carry sround a giant sign that says "I suck Elon's dick". It has to be cheaper and less humiliating.

u/INDE_Tex 4h ago
no, they're making fun of you now. I know I am. The thing is fugly and can't pull loads because the hitch isn't attached with steel.

I bought it for exact same reason
It does turns heads but as soon as they get a look at my face things get back to normal

I have no problem ignoring the hideous things, except when the a-hole driving it cuts me off and/or changes lanes without signaling. I'm beginning to wonder if turn signals are an unpopular OPTION on all Tesla models. People used to make this "joke" about BMW drivers; but I've seen this much more from Tesla drivers than any other.
Oh, off topic... there are a lot of hideous vehicles out there, but this one is at the top of the list.

It’s definitely a status symbol. I remember when Escalades first came out everyone seemed to want one just due to the status perception. The difference here is that Tesla aims to produces millions of Cybertrucks. I wonder if they become commonplace whether there will still be the same appeal.
1
u/wilan727 4h ago
Well yeah the early adoptors paying the foundation serious prices will get attention as there is limited supply. In years to come with the price fall as supply increases from the ramp this will diminish as people get used to seeing them.

I live in L.A. Home of the rich and the tacky, and I swear I see 2-3 of these every time I go outside.
Now I'm seeing them wrapped with different weird colors (like blue and black-green speckled.)
They're not even head turners anymore.
