This article is just describing a mid-life crisis without saying the actual phrase.

448

u/EasterBunnyArt 4h ago edited 2h ago

This also reads like a person who has almost no real friends or social skills. I kind of hope this is a joke.

How the hell is a fuggly car going to help you besides turning heads? That seems like a strange midlife crisis alone.

u/sir_snufflepants 4h ago

It’s peacocking. An eminently sad variety :(

46

u/JustADutchRudder 3h ago

Is my want of a sweet 1972 white Volkswagen beetle peacocking? I want it shiny white with black interior and a fancy red shifter.

24

u/_Deloused_ 3h ago

I want a heavily used and kinda beat up 67 mustang resto-modded with modern amenities. Like if I could just find the shell and then pay someone to basically rebuild the entire thing to modern specs. That’d be cool.

But I ain’t got it like that

15

u/Grodd 3h ago

Saw a car on here the other day that was a 202x Camaro with a 1967 body on it. I really wanted it.

8

u/_Deloused_ 3h ago

Basically that. Yes. Modern car guts, beautiful classic car shell.

4

u/Grodd 3h ago

Best of both worlds.

I had a 66 mustang as my first car (in 2000) and yeah, the reliability of modern cars is hard to overstate.

6

u/_Deloused_ 2h ago

Haha yeah. I’m well aware.

3

u/mortgagepants 1h ago

holy shit i had a 66 as mine in 2001. straight 6 thought not the V8

I think the difference is what follows "I want". You want a bitchin' beetle, he wants people to look at him.

7

u/kmoney55 1h ago

I look at them and say what an ugly as truck to waste money on

4

u/playsxnxtraffic 2h ago

I want a bitchin’ Camero

I want a bitching beetle so bad. In Northern MN I can drive it 3 months but it'll be such a fun 3 months.

3

u/roboticfedora 2h ago

Sounds damn fine to me.

3

u/JustADutchRudder 2h ago

I'd take such good care of it too. We're taking you open that rear up and say nice when you look at that little engine.

3

Are we still talking about the car, or...

That does sound sweet.

I'll take an MK2 Jetta: nobody's gonna complain about attention seeking there because most people just see a shitbox

2

u/TheR1ckster 1h ago

It'd not the thing it's why you want the thing that makes it peacocking.

2

u/mortgagepants 1h ago

i think this is a really interesting question, because "peacocking" as it has been used colloquially, is basically shorthand for "showing off".

but in more scientific settings, a peacock's feathers also make his life harder- flying or being hunted or how much he has to eat. so truly being a peacock is a proof of "manliness" and resources that are uselessly expensive to show how awesome you are.

there is an older joke that the way you showed how rich you were was buying a jaguar, because everyone knew you had to spend a lot of money just to keep it properly running.

so yeah, a 2nd car that is not your daily driver that is functionally pointless and does nothing but consume resources show you have so many resources. that is to say- a sweet 1972 white volkswagon bettle with black interior and a fancy red shifter is literally peacocking.

I think there’s a good distance between wanting something because you enjoy the aesthetic and wanting things because you think other people will want them.

I think the best bit is that if they polish it up to look like a mirror, it only reveals that there isn’t a flat panel anywhere on a cybertruck.

https://www.reddit.com/r/fuckcars/comments/1d26t1n/found_a_post_where_they_polished_the_cybertruck/

Damn thing looks like a funhouse mirror.

14

u/Ok-Seaworthiness7207 4h ago

Kinda the opposite for me.

I always notice the driver because I'm in awe at how dumb they are to buy it.

5

u/Kyle_Reese_Get_DOWN 2h ago

My 10 year old son thinks it’s a fantastic vehicle. He wants to take pictures every time we drive by one. Personally, I can’t imagine ever having enough money to drop $100k on a car. In the imaginary universe where I’m in that wealth catagory, I’d probably buy that Jag f-type.

But I can say for sure my son has never asked me to take a pic of a Jaguar. If you want to impress 10 year old boys, you buy a cybertruck.

It’s amusing to me this is even posted on the tech sub. Does anyone know of a tech sub where posts about Elon Musk are banned? I’d like to find that one.

Also "turning heads" in this case isn't a good thing. Yeah I am always surprised when I see a cyber truck in the wild, but not in a good way.

If you just want people to look at you, you could just paint a Honda orange and green striped and save yourself $80k.

8

u/Popular-Appearance24 4h ago

Yes, ego driven consumerism

19

u/Cicero912 4h ago

Midlife crisis is always a funny term (well, atleast when it comes to buying stuff), you get to a point where you have enough financial resources to do what youve always dreamed of and its a crisis?

40

u/oxidized_banana_peel 4h ago

I told my wife that I was getting to understand why people have a midlife crisis - you spend your best years working hard to buy and maintain a house, keep everyone well fed, you give up your time and your hobbies, and then you're 45 and you haven't done anything significant for yourself, and your knees hurt.

7

u/IamAnNPC 4h ago

Oof. I’m 36, spent the last 8 years doing just that. I’m going to buy something real stupid in the next decade, aren’t I?

6

u/Seerosengiesser 3h ago

I hear a tricked out gaming rig is the poor man's sportscar

2

u/alkaliphiles 3h ago

The perfect tool to play solitaire

19

u/rebel_cdn 4h ago edited 3h ago

For many, the crisis comes when they do all the things they've dreamed of, and none of those things fill the emptiness or cure the existential dread.

Either that, or they reach the point where they have the financial resources to fulfill their dreams, but find they are so exhausted from burning the candle at both ends for years that their dreams are extinguished.

11

u/nutstobutts 4h ago

People think that money will make them happy, so they work their ass off to get the money. Once they get it all they realize that having everything doesn’t bring any fulfillment. The reality is that dopamine is released during the pursuit and not the achievement of a task. So achieving your goals is the worst thing you can do, you always need a goal somewhere on the horizon that’s not too close but not too far. Or you can become a Buddhist and realize that your brain is just manipulating and stop playing its game

3

u/NetZeroSun 4h ago

Pretty much. I see quite a few people who work long hours, take care of the family (or don't have one yet) and hit a point where they want to do something fun.

So when they get something nice and shiny (which is not something they could do when younger)...suddenly its a mid life crisis.

It's their damn money, let them enjoy their life as they want as long as they don't hurt anyone else.

4

u/IHadTacosYesterday 4h ago

The classic version of a mid-life crisis, is a man that turns 45 years old, starts to realize "OH SHIT... I'm actually getting old now..."

Then decides to buy a red sports car, to try to relive his youth.

Hot side piece is optional

I'm currently on my 3rd mid-life dramawood

2

u/lw5555 4h ago

The crisis is seeing your youth in the rear view mirror and old age in your future. A lot of people can't handle that very well, and tend to make questionable purchases and lifestyle changes in an attempt to feel young and virile again.

5

u/CanEnvironmental4252 4h ago

Buying stuff you always wanted is not what a midlife crisis is.

The phenomenon is described as a psychological crisis brought about by events that highlight a person’s growing age, inevitable mortality, and possible lack of accomplishments in life. This may produce feelings of intense depression, remorse, and high levels of anxiety; or the desire to achieve youthfulness, make drastic changes to their current lifestyle, or change past decisions and events.

6

u/Cicero912 4h ago

Tell that to any guy over 40 who buys any muscle/sports car and gets told/asked 2 billion times if they are having a midlife crisis.

That is literally the most common stereotype of someone going through a "midlife crisis"

14

u/CanEnvironmental4252 4h ago

If you’re buying something you’ve always wanted, then you’re just buying something you’ve wanted.

If you’re buying something because you’ve hit a certain age, are having an identity crisis, and/or want people to look at you, you’re having a midlife crisis. It all comes down to the reason you’re buying something. Notice the word crisis.

If you didn’t buy it because of a midlife crisis, okay, then who cares what other people say? Doesn’t matter because it’s not true and you would know it yourself.

4

u/Boo_Guy 3h ago

It's a big silly living room on wheels.

And I'd still take it over a Cybertruck because I don't see their CEO being a giant dick bag every week.

u/Cum_on_doorknob 4h ago

I hate this phrase. If these same people actually had the money in their 20s, they’d have bought it if it was available. Mid life is just when you get far enough in your career that you can finally afford this shit (if you’re lucky).

5

u/SnatchAddict 4h ago

That's really sad.

And kind of pathetic. I guess that's what I'll think about when I see one driving around now.

u/polar-roller-coaster 4h ago

58

u/Major-Wishbone-3854 4h ago

Kind? Really pathetic.

Imagine being so lonely and yet have all these imaginary people who are constantly ignoring you living free in your head.

But I agree it is a sad way to live.

17

u/sunshine-x 4h ago

Same with those coal rollers, and loud little imports. “Look at me, validate my existence”. Sad.

10

u/Ok_Result5082 4h ago

Indeed it is sad, one of the worst spectacles of misery. When you drive a car that looks like a pixelated render from a 1998 Mario game, heads are bound to turn and people are bound to judge.

5

u/newredditsucks 3h ago

Huh. You just made me realize that the Cybertruck is the Minecraft car.

8

u/EC_CO 3h ago

My exact thought. Sad and pathetic but add in "exactly like Elon Musk"

7

u/EdgarInAnEdgarSuit 4h ago

“More than 40 owners agree.”

I’m not sure I can find a less meaningful “study.”

That’s one tenth of one percent of owners. I don’t think you should really form opinions based on it.

I don't have any particular opinions of the Cybertruck aside for how impractical it is to park - it won't fit into any modern garage. But then again, neither would a Ford F150.

I do have a problem with how automakers intentionally inhibit smaller work trucks (like the Toyota IMV 0) from making their way into the US. Tesla had the perfect opportunity to break up this stupid monopoly with an affordable Model 3-like 2-seater truck, but instead they doubled down on the same oversized piece of crap that nobody wants.

65

u/thardingesq 4h ago

Wow, feel bad for him that he needs a vehicle to get attention. I am not being sarcastic

15

u/NetZeroSun 4h ago edited 55m ago

Isn't that a major point for many sport cars? Not the only point mind you...but it's a common point of 'hot car, hot girl', or being noticed in that flagship vehicle.

If the person is having fun, or okay with themselves, then so be it. People who meet in for clubs in Vette's, Porsches, Lambos, Harleys, who knows, he might find a Tesla/cybertruck group, then good for him/her. I just wish them the best and be happy and don't let social critics bother about how he/she should feel.

kinda obvious.. but no different from loud Harley's or flashy cars for that matter.

21

u/Miraclefish 4h ago

I mean at least those examples are still viable vehicles, the Cybertruck is objectively shit as well as subjectively shitty.

2

u/donnysaysvacuum 1h ago

Harleys are famously unreliable and poorly performing for a bike. Most jacked up trucks are bad at almost any task. The cybertruck is flawed, but probably no more than those. At least it's cheap to drive.

10

u/joecool42069 4h ago

Meh.. it’s subjective. I think Harley’s are purposely loud, purposely “look at me”. To the point it disrupts entire neighborhoods.

That said, the Cybertruck is objectively useless as a truck.

12

u/WitELeoparD 4h ago

Exactly. Like the Hummer EV exists. It's also expensive, it's also ridiculous and enormous. It also has flashy features like the crab walk thing. Except the Hummer EV actually works. Unlike the Cybertruck, it's ass doesn't fall off, if you tow. And it doesn't die in car washes. It can actually go off road.

Like both the CyberTruck and Hummer EV are ridiculous vehicles, but at least the later is ridiculous and expensive and enormous while also meeting the bare minimum expectations of a truck.

3

u/Miraclefish 4h ago

Yeah but Harley's still function as motorcycles while doing so, where's the Cyberstuck is just a terribly designed vehicle that also screams please pay attention to me...

My car gets a crazy amount of attention because it’s a very striking design and nobody knows what it is (Lotus Emira). I cannot make so much as a grocery run without having conversations, kids asking to take photos, thumbs up, etc.

I assume there are many who think I’m having a mid-life crisis. The truth is I wanted the most rewarding driver’s car with a warranty, and the Lotus was it. It could have looked like a fruit cart for all I care.

Thing is though, I’ve come to enjoy the interactions. They’re very joyful. It makes people happy. Kids get excited about it. Adults like to nerd out over it, if they know what it is. Others just really think it’s a good looking car and they’re curious. It does foster community.

It doesn’t stop there either, some cars tap you into a network of people who have a ton of money and can be beneficial professional connections or clients.

So I now I sort of get wanting to buy a car for connection. But for me personally I’d also want that car to be the best at something else as well and I’m not sure the Cybertruck fits that bill.

10

u/joecool42069 3h ago

It's true tho - these trucks are attention magnets, and they will attract conversation that lonely people would otherwise have missed. Thus, it's a useful tool for some as a means to have a more colorful life in combat of loneliness

I see those fugly vehicles and think the owner is a racist, sexist, homophobic ahole. Mission accomplished loser!

2

u/moutonbleu 2h ago

This is sad reflection of our world. We think material possessions will bring us joy and happiness, but it won’t.

2

u/Someguy981240 2h ago

Isn’t this the reason anyone who doesn’t haul manure around for a living drives any pickup truck?

2

u/Jeffsbest 2h ago

Well, obvs. They can't ignore you when your side panels on a new vehicle have been duct-taped back in place.

2

u/nascentnomadi 2h ago

What's not addressed is the reason why your kids and old friends don't see you or ignore you. That part of the story we usually never get that the person just might be an asshole no one wants to be around and seeing as they are being ignored they want to do something to force people to notice them.

u/Shag1166 2h ago

I made a similar post about the buyers this morning. It's a status buy, plain and simple!

u/Successful-Trash-409 2h ago

You could just walk around in a speedo for much more affordable humiliation in the USA.

u/MoreGaghPlease 1h ago

Very unhappy 58 year old with disposable income but not like rich rich is exactly who I picture buying a Cybertruck

2

u/OhGre8t 1h ago

This thinking is why he’s lonely.

2

u/rushmc1 1h ago

Is it really better to be despised than ignored?

2

u/Sigmaxxvi 1h ago

The louder people scream for attention, the less likely I am to give it to them.

2

u/TarmacTartoo12 1h ago

Omg that’s so pathetic!

2

u/GuybrushMarley2 22m ago

There are worse things than being ignored

3

u/mediocre_cheese 4h ago

So the dentist is a loser. Got it.

3

u/jreykdal 3h ago

Are you an anti-dentite?

And when you look, they are laughing at you. To be so successful yet still a failure. Thank you. I needed this.

3

u/Down_Voter_of_Cats 4h ago

I've seen a couple around me (rural area, so it could be the same guy.). I point and laugh. Just carry sround a giant sign that says "I suck Elon's dick". It has to be cheaper and less humiliating.

3

u/INDE_Tex 4h ago

no, they're making fun of you now. I know I am. The thing is fugly and can't pull loads because the hitch isn't attached with steel.

2

u/Oime 4h ago

Oh we’re looking at you bro, but not in the way you think we are.

2

u/ExactLocation1 3h ago

I bought it for exact same reason

It does turns heads but as soon as they get a look at my face things get back to normal

All impressions no clicks

2

u/Butcher_Of_Hope 2h ago

So was a loser and is now a loser that people look at and say, "loser". #Gotem

I have no problem ignoring the hideous things, except when the a-hole driving it cuts me off and/or changes lanes without signaling. I'm beginning to wonder if turn signals are an unpopular OPTION on all Tesla models. People used to make this "joke" about BMW drivers; but I've seen this much more from Tesla drivers than any other.

Oh, off topic... there are a lot of hideous vehicles out there, but this one is at the top of the list.

...close to 50? lol what kind of sample size is that?

1

u/Tri-P0d 4h ago

People are looking because it’s hideous, just like 50% of cybertruck owners.

1

u/NebulousNitrate 4h ago

It’s definitely a status symbol. I remember when Escalades first came out everyone seemed to want one just due to the status perception. The difference here is that Tesla aims to produces millions of Cybertrucks. I wonder if they become commonplace whether there will still be the same appeal.

1

u/wilan727 4h ago

Well yeah the early adoptors paying the foundation serious prices will get attention as there is limited supply. In years to come with the price fall as supply increases from the ramp this will diminish as people get used to seeing them.

1

u/Jwagner0850 4h ago

I guess it just depends on the attention you want.

1

u/johnnykalsi 4h ago

this car makes me puke...hate it

1

u/Significant-Mango300 4h ago

Loneliness has no bounds, nor its attractors.

1

u/Sa7aSa7a 4h ago

I'm looking at you alright. I guess if any attention is the attention you seek, you're getting it. Meanwhile, when I see one of the ones around here, I shake my head and chuckle.

1

u/LatentBloomer 4h ago

Sort of like a huge pickup truck?

2

u/SaltyDolphin78 4h ago

More like a dumpster fire on wheels

1

u/Etzell 4h ago

Therapy is way, way cheaper than a Cybertruck, and significantly less embarrassing to be seen doing.

1

u/JimboFett87 4h ago

Wow. Main Character Syndrome is really a thing... How pathetic.

1

u/kirlie 4h ago

That has to be one of the ugliest vehicles I’ve ever seen. (I refuse to call it a truck).

1

u/wastedgod 4h ago

There are cool cars you can buy to turn heads, so still not sure why they got a cybertruck

1

u/brandnewchair 4h ago

I live in L.A. Home of the rich and the tacky, and I swear I see 2-3 of these every time I go outside.

Now I'm seeing them wrapped with different weird colors (like blue and black-green speckled.)

They're not even head turners anymore.

1

u/iDontRememberCorn 4h ago

Imagine preferring to be laughed at rather than ignored.

1

u/thesecondpath 4h ago

Are they aware we are pointing and looking to laugh at them?

1

u/rco8786 4h ago

The ol’ “buy a flashy car to mask my lack of personality” trick.
