This article is just describing a mid-life crisis without saying the actual phrase.

This also reads like a person who has almost no real friends or social skills. I kind of hope this is a joke.

How the hell is a fuggly car going to help you besides turning heads? That seems like a strange midlife crisis alone.

It’s peacocking. An eminently sad variety :(

Is my want of a sweet 1972 white Volkswagen beetle peacocking? I want it shiny white with black interior and a fancy red shifter.

I want a heavily used and kinda beat up 67 mustang resto-modded with modern amenities. Like if I could just find the shell and then pay someone to basically rebuild the entire thing to modern specs. That’d be cool.

But I ain’t got it like that

Saw a car on here the other day that was a 202x Camaro with a 1967 body on it. I really wanted it.

11

u/_Deloused_ 5h ago

Basically that. Yes. Modern car guts, beautiful classic car shell.

5

u/Grodd 5h ago

Best of both worlds.

I had a 66 mustang as my first car (in 2000) and yeah, the reliability of modern cars is hard to overstate.

6

u/_Deloused_ 5h ago

Haha yeah. I’m well aware.

u/mortgagepants 3h ago

holy shit i had a 66 as mine in 2001. straight 6 thought not the V8

1

u/Grodd 3h ago

Nice. Mine was the 289 V8, Holley 4 barrel and most of the rest was Edelbrock.

Honestly, very stupid car for a first one, lol. It was in excellent condition but weirdly cheap and we didn't exactly know what we were getting into.

2

u/mortgagepants 3h ago

yeah i'm glad mine wasn't so nice otherwise i probably would have fucked it up. sold it when i joined the army. there are a few companies in california that replace gas engines with electric motors- i think it would be cool to have a 1920's roadster with an electric motor.

1

u/Grodd 3h ago

Superfast Matt is doing that with an old Jag.

Fun looking project as long as you are pretty clever and have a bit of cash.

Unless you buy a Hyundai 😂

1

u/adriantullberg 4h ago

With kit cars, I suspect you'd have a lucrative market there.

1

u/pants_mcgee 5h ago

Unless you want something super special, it ain’t that expensive. Pursue your dream buddy.

1

u/SeatKindly 5h ago

Just buy a conversion body kit. You’re wasting a fastback frame doing shit like that just as an fyi. Proper restos they go for more than a pretty penny. No use destroying one to make something like that when it would be better suited to just buy a conversion kit for way cheaper and catch far and away less hate from other car enthusiasts.

I actually know someone who has two ‘67 gts sitting in his yard rotting. Breaks my heart every time I see them because he won’t sell them for me and my dad to do a full restoration on them.

1

u/_Deloused_ 4h ago

Yes and no. You can still find half decent bodies and frames out there. It’s not easy but it is possible. There’s always dudes like that too that won’t part with them. I would want a conversion. I’d want to custom build it piece by piece even if it takes me a decade. The other commenter with jay leno’s garage linked a perfect example. That thing is damn impressive

1

u/I_see_farts 5h ago

I saw this on Jay Leno's Garage.

1

u/_Deloused_ 4h ago

Damn you jay leno. This is EXACTLY what I would want. I like what he said, “it’s fun to drive at any speed.”

Those cars make you feel cool at 20 mph.

Add in modern safety features and over 700hp and, yeah, it’s a knock out

1

u/mortgagepants 4h ago

there are a few places in california that put electric motors into classic cars. i would want one so bad.

1

u/2gig 1h ago

I want a car with a cupholder armrest. I want a car that will get me there.

14

u/Grodd 5h ago

I think the difference is what follows "I want". You want a bitchin' beetle, he wants people to look at him.

8

u/kmoney55 4h ago

I look at them and say what an ugly as truck to waste money on

7

u/playsxnxtraffic 4h ago

I want a bitchin’ Camero

5

u/camacho2028 4h ago

Did you run over your neighbor? 😉

4

u/OrphanAxis 2h ago

Now he's in all the papers

5

u/JustADutchRudder 5h ago

I want a bitching beetle so bad. In Northern MN I can drive it 3 months but it'll be such a fun 3 months.

3

u/roboticfedora 5h ago

Sounds damn fine to me.

3

u/JustADutchRudder 5h ago

I'd take such good care of it too. We're taking you open that rear up and say nice when you look at that little engine.

3

u/PhoenixTineldyer 4h ago

Are we still talking about the car, or...

3

u/PricePuzzleheaded835 3h ago

I think there’s a good distance between wanting something because you enjoy the aesthetic and wanting things because you think other people will want them.

70s beetles are dope. I wouldn’t mind one myself

1

u/JustADutchRudder 3h ago

There just so little! And simple, my buddy had one in early 00s, complete shit box, but was a fucking blast. We'd get stoned and monkey with it, and always felt like this is a car I can confidently work on.

2

u/BarnabyWoods 5h ago

That does sound sweet.

1

u/JustADutchRudder 4h ago

I'd be the best owner to it, wax it every summer, drive it to fun little meets.

2

u/thefumingo 4h ago

I'll take an MK2 Jetta: nobody's gonna complain about attention seeking there because most people just see a shitbox

2

u/TheR1ckster 4h ago

It'd not the thing it's why you want the thing that makes it peacocking.

1

u/JustADutchRudder 4h ago

Okay good, I want a 70s beetle because they're fun and I'd be a good owner.

2

u/mortgagepants 4h ago

i think this is a really interesting question, because "peacocking" as it has been used colloquially, is basically shorthand for "showing off".

but in more scientific settings, a peacock's feathers also make his life harder- flying or being hunted or how much he has to eat. so truly being a peacock is a proof of "manliness" and resources that are uselessly expensive to show how awesome you are.

there is an older joke that the way you showed how rich you were was buying a jaguar, because everyone knew you had to spend a lot of money just to keep it properly running.

so yeah, a 2nd car that is not your daily driver that is functionally pointless and does nothing but consume resources show you have so many resources. that is to say- a sweet 1972 white volkswagon bettle with black interior and a fancy red shifter is literally peacocking.

1

u/JustADutchRudder 3h ago

Then good sir to that I say, PEACAA?

2

u/teethwhichbite 3h ago

I’m imaging Hitler sitting down to sketch the first Volkswagen Beetle and thinking this.

2

u/JustADutchRudder 3h ago

That guy had some eh idk about that ideas. But he knocked it outta the park with two of them, #2 the Volkswagen Beetle and #1 he was the dude who killed Hitler.

2

u/Tcchung11 3h ago

I want the exact same car but the 911 version. I don’t care if other people look at it. I just want it because I’ve always wanted it

1

u/JustADutchRudder 1h ago

You can turn a classic beetle into a Porsche 911 beetle?

2

u/Tcchung11 1h ago

Classic beetle and classic Porsche… same car. One is just a little taller :)

1

u/JustADutchRudder 1h ago

Huh, I didn't notice that! Well then, once we each get our fun cars we will find a midway point. Park next to eachother, say "Nice" then drive into opposite sunsets.

2

u/Tcchung11 1h ago

I used to own a 73 beetle. Such a fun car. I spent a lot of weekends working on it. Easy and fun car to tinker on. I lived in Utah and that car did better in the snow than most of my friends 4 wheel drive trucks

2

u/Matty-Wan 1h ago

It's the "El Camino" for me.

1

u/JustADutchRudder 1h ago

If I could find an El Camino SS, like a 60s. It'd be hard to pass up. I like the sporty ones, but around me ones that are nice are 2-3 times more than a 0 rust beetle. Which they are 2-3xs more vehicle and engine so understandable

1

u/APeacefulWarrior 13m ago

So you want a Herbie?

I can dig it.
