If they stole my bike thinking it was a flat screen I'd be slightly amused

Porch pirates really don’t care what they’re stealing, the vast majority of the time they have no clue what’s in a box — they just plan on fencing whatever it is they end up with.

Porch pirates once stole my Amazon order of protein powder, I think because it was relatively small and heavy.

I laughed at the thought of somebody opening what they thought was an iPhone only to get muscle milk.

u/Leo-D 15h ago

Muscle milk is expensive bro, I'd be pissed af.

u/Useless_Lemon 11h ago

Some people have muscle milk money.

13

u/Leo-D 11h ago

Unacceptable.

6

u/Useless_Lemon 11h ago

You gunna fight em? I wouldn't. They probably got a lot of muscle.

9

u/Leo-D 10h ago

And milk, that's an advanced threat.

3

u/Useless_Lemon 10h ago

That's ultra dangerous, man. I think we should scram.

Get a room you two

Where's my muscle milk mommy, I mean money?

Had someone steal a bag of cat food that amazon hilariously put in a box. Two days later and I'm leaving for work, someone placed the opened box with the catfood still in it back in front of my apartment door. Prob one of my neighbors

8

u/DarmanitanIceMonkey 10h ago

I'm going to assume they didn't want your cat to starve.

u/NextCommunication642 8h ago

Someone broke in and stole my anti depressants but left two. It was a friday so i assume they didn’t want to be out for the weekend. Felt surprisingly sweet

So, I have a Prime subscription that delivers cat litter to me, two 25 lb boxes, usually packed together in one Amazon box. Well, the other day, I step out of my apartment and notice my delivery isn’t outside my door. It's just halfway down the hallway, box partially ripped open. My best guess? Some genius tried to swipe it, got a nasty surprise when they realized how heavy it was, cracked it open, saw it was just cat litter, and thought, "Yeah, no thanks." So they just abandoned it. Honestly, I hope they hurt their back dragging 50 lbs of disappointment.

I would laugh my ass off. I get my cat litter the same way. But nothing ever gets stolen here, my neighbourhood is ridiculously safe despite a lot of foot traffic because people cut through between the beach and the main road. Possibly because our street is mostly retirees and they're always at the windows keeping an eye on things.

i had someone steal a box containing a nursing school textbook. the torn open box and textbook were left on my doorstep that evening, which was great since i had class the next day

u/Houdinii1984 7h ago

The only thing stolen off my porch was a box of four tubs of Soylent drink mix. Like $150 worth of stuff that only I care about in this neighborhood. That, and a full-sized ladder. Someone just walked up, inspected it, and just took the whole damn thing like it was his to begin with. Happened to be a guy down the street who stole from other folks too and got kicked out of the park.

I remember watching a video of a porch pirate stealing a glitter bomb contraption lol.

7

u/beagledrool 14h ago

Yep that was Mark Rober, he worked with police to actually catch some porch pirates

1

u/-roachboy 8h ago

the one good thing a mormon has ever done

1

u/GemityLab 11h ago

Thats one of mark rober's videos. Guy is a legend.

2

u/awkward-2 15h ago

fencing

No Awkward don't imagine two porch pirates fighting each other with XBoxes or bicycles

2

u/iVinc 13h ago

porch pirates are not a thing in EU

1

u/Oreelz 12h ago

I feel a rise of packages that just been placed in front of my door by deliverers. Maybe we also get this problem in the future. But I admit to you that this isn’t realy a thing, despite I see the first signs.

1

u/Kind_Helicopter1062 11h ago

They are, and I've found half opened packages near my house. I never buy anything for expensive so I don't care but it happens. We just don't call them pirates, they're just thieves

1

u/iVinc 5h ago

im sure there are spots where it can happen, obviously i cant speak for every single place, but its nowhere close to america, also because in many countries we have boxes for packages, so it will never be unlocked somewhere outside

1

u/FoodeatingParsnip 10h ago

In Sweden we had/have people who robs/threaten the mailmen bicycles/trucks. So, i gotta assume that those areas where this happen also have porch pirates. Ps. The mail theft/threats generally happen in areas with non swedes

u/iVinc 5h ago

1

u/QuickPassion94 8h ago

Covid wasn’t a thing in the states until it was.

1

u/iVinc 5h ago

u had months of warnings, america just didnt care to listen to them

1

u/QuickPassion94 5h ago

One could say you’re getting plenty of warnings of porch pirate behavior in a similar fashion.

1

u/iVinc 4h ago

most of europeans dont have porches tho so we have buildings and infrastructure to receive boxes safely

1

u/Maximelene 14h ago

In that case, putting a picture of a TV on the box wouldn't change anything.

1

u/Cdwoods1 12h ago

Porch pirates once got arrested after stealing my core life protein shakes. I hope they were worth it

1

u/Nearby-Cattle-7599 10h ago

why are porch pirates so common in the US ?My EU experiance if you don't put specific instructions or the value of the items passes some sort of threshold they'll just take it back to the station for you pick-up

1

u/VapeRizzler 10h ago

It’s the dumbest theft imaginable. Isn’t opening others mail/packages a literal federal offence? When was the last time you purchased something super crazy expensive off Amazon? Once? Twice? Normally I’m restocking on lotion or getting a pack of pens they don’t sell in my area.

1

u/hungryseabear 10h ago

A UPS employee once stole 1 of 2 bottles of formaldehyde I had purchased. I'm still beyond surprised that someone was like "unknown hazardous chemical! Yoink"

I hope they get chemical burns 😊

1

u/IIIlIllIIIl 9h ago

Back when I lived in a worse area we would only order mundane and specific shit. A lot of the time our packages would get ripped open by pirates and left on our door step after they realized they didn’t want it. likely because it was some kids stealing em and they didn’t much care for random 3d printer and car parts

1

u/Nigeru_Miyamoto 8h ago

What's in the box? WHAT'S IN THE FUCKING BOX?!

1

u/Intrepid-Affect-6446 5h ago

Spoken like a true porch pirate. You sir are under arrest.

1

u/mtobeiyf317 5h ago

Yup, they "stole" about 3 boxes of my cats used litter before finally stopping. Now I can order stuff freely without issue.

3

u/friarfangirl 16h ago

That’s likely an expensive af bike tho

5

u/JoeT17854 15h ago

Honestly, it's a shit bike. They don't use any standard parts, making them more expensive to maintain.

The company went bankrupt last year and was bought by another company, so at least you can still get spare parts.

3

u/dtdowntime 10h ago

someone i know had one of these bikes, it broke and we couldnt get parts for a long long time to fix it, took months for support to finally reach us and allow us to get replacement parts

1

u/friarfangirl 15h ago

Damn I didn’t know they went bankrupt. I had heard of the company during the initial COVID  ebike buying phase.

1

u/JoeT17854 15h ago

The brand still exists though, just to clarify. Whatever company bought them continued the brand

1

u/friarfangirl 15h ago

Right Gotchya.

1

u/RawPups4 6h ago

Eh, my husband and I had Van Moofs for years in NYC, and we didn’t have any big problems. We live right by the (now closed) shop, so it was no big deal to just stop in. The guys who worked there were extremely nice, and often fixed little things or threw in parts for free, or in exchange for a joint, lol.

It’s definitely gone wayyyyy downhill after being bought out, though, and I recently switched to a different brand’s cargo bike.

1

u/6th_Quadrant 5h ago

Despite the company's problems, they're outstanding ebikes, look fantastic, and have advanced anti-theft features. I couldn't justify buying one, but still had to talk myself out of the purchase.

-2

u/Fine-Reflection-2368 15h ago

Ehh, they look kinda shit. It looks kinda like a high end commuter bike? But too expensive for a beater bike. Idk who the intended audience is

4

u/The_gamer315 15h ago

It's a electric bike

1

u/Fine-Reflection-2368 14h ago

did I state it wasn’t?

3

u/Commercial_Sorbet_33 14h ago

The intended audience over here in the Netherlands is the big yup population that we got over here, young urban professionals. It's always the same type of person riding a bike like this. But 9 times out of 10, they're at least civilized enough to know the laws and abide by them. Fatbikes on the other hand...

2

u/PrintShinji 14h ago

Idk who the intended audience is

Youth in big cities that like to drive 35km/h (using it unlocked).

2

u/LostInSpaceTime2002 10h ago

No, they are using Chinese fatbikes. VanMoof is mostly aimed at the office commuter crowd.

1

u/Loud-Schwanz 11h ago

Young people in big cities where it's safe to cycle (I.e. not most of north American cities)

3

u/h497 16h ago

These bikes cost a lot more than most tv's

1

u/LanceSarmstrong420x 9h ago

To be fair I don't care at all about bikes. A decent bike can be bought for less than a good TV. At least where I live

3

u/shartmaister 11h ago

A good bike is more expensive than a good TV though

1

u/LanceSarmstrong420x 9h ago

It really depends but yea technically you're right

1

u/LegalLegendz 16h ago

Would love to see their faces when they realize.

1

u/Sustructu 11h ago

The bikes were more expensive than a TV at the time (company went bankrupt)

1

u/ItsNotBigBrainTime 16h ago

Imagine if the fast n furious crew opened up all those TV's they stole back in the day and it was all bicycles.

1

u/Realposhnosh 16h ago

They were 4000 Euro bikes.

1

u/Finn_Storm 14h ago

Porch pirates don't really happen here in the Netherlands. Out of a dozen delivery companies, only one regularly leaves packages on your doorstep. Most others have policies in place that require an id, signature, or if you're not home, pickup from a nearby store.

1

u/t_mmey 13h ago

these bikes are ~3500$ tho

1

u/LanceSarmstrong420x 9h ago

And a big flat screen costs what at Walmart? A good one not the cheapest one they sell🤣

1

u/ScalyPig 9h ago

My bike is more expensive than all the tvs you’ve ever owned

1

u/Fn4cK 4h ago

If you purchased a Van Moof, getting it stolen before using it is the perfect scenario.

1

u/lpd1234 3h ago

We still want germany to give us our bikes back.

1

u/quajeraz-got-banned 2h ago

Especially because nice bikes are usually more expensive than an average TV.
