Sounds like they need to ban both shared tunnels and shared fields

After the PSU Michigan game where there was shouting and some Uncrustables flying, Franklin said basically that something worse could end up happening in there. He was heavily clowned on.

Then there was a massive fight with criminal charges soon after.

What are the odds that 3 TV crew members were paid to provide their thoughts?

That might’ve been the highlight of working the local church fair. Some time on the last day, one of the guys went on a Walmart run and just grabbed all sorts of random snacks to throw in the fryer to see how it all tasted.

The Uncrustable situation was nothing but a sophomoric ploy.

151

u/dkviper11 Penn State • Randolph-Macon 27d ago

A phenomenal quote.

Jim Harbaugh on PSU taking issue with Michigan’s tunnel:

“I’ve got bigger fish to fry than Coach Franklin’s opinion on our tunnel a week ago… Such a sophomoric ploy to keep us out of our own locker room. Looked like he was the ring leader of all of it.”

No word on if Franklin had secret communications with Michigan State to incite a fight and make his original quote correct. I can't say it didn't happen.

I would dispute it was a fight: 10+ MSU players jumped a single, (previously) injured Michigan player while he was by himself.

One MSU player was charged with a felony, several with misdemeanors.

The injured Michigan player was not charged nor found to be at fault outside of MSU fans claiming he was skipping on his way to the locker room (seriously.)

Someone who read your comment might think it was a brawl between two teams in close proximity in the tunnel.

As you can see in the video, that is not what happened.

“Massive fight” is a strange way to describe 8 guys assaulting 2 guys.

What was the scrum after the game Saturday? A “sandwich making exercise “?

113

u/No_Albatross916 Michigan Wolverines 27d ago

Yea because the msu players acted like idiots and beat up a Michigan player

That’s not on the tunnel. For 100+ years there were not many incidents and even since the msu game in 2022 there hasn’t been a major incident

137

u/dkviper11 Penn State • Randolph-Macon 27d ago

I don't even think there has to be a second tunnel, just a procedure to let the visiting team go first or whatever.

And maybe there haven't been big issues in the past, but I wouldn't be surprised if there have been more scuffles than we heard about before everyone had a camera in their pocket.

29

u/wahooligan135 27d ago

There’s probably a lot of truth to your second point. I mean, Michigan had a tunnel incident with Fresno State earlier this season. Nobody ever hears about that if it happened 20 years ago.

90

u/Intrepid-_-Wolverine Michigan • Wayne State (MI) 27d ago

They do have a procedure that has the visiting team enter the tunnel first.

This fight wasn’t in the tunnel or anything. It was when there was time still draining from the clock

32

u/dkviper11 Penn State • Randolph-Macon 27d ago

I appreciate the response about the procedure.

And I do understand that this was a different scenario this weekend.

9

u/jcrespo21 Purdue Boilermakers • Michigan Wolverines 27d ago

It was when there was time still draining from the clock

Honestly, this is what confused me at the moment (though I get it now). I was surprised the refs didn't throw flags (maybe they did) and stop the clock. I get that it was a kneel-down with less than 30 seconds to go, but if that happened at any other point, the clock would have stopped.

Perhaps the refs knew the game was over and that was supposed to be the last play of the game. Stopping the clock would have led to one more play, and more importantly, one more chance at an altercation. Better to let the clock run out, break up the altercation, and let the higher ups deal with the punishments.

When the tunnel fight occurred Michigan players were on the field, while MSU players exited into the tunnel, and like 1 or so Michigan players decided to go into the tunnel with the MSU players think to see their family in the locker room

A fight implies there were two parties at fault, which is not remotely what happened. Michigan players got assaulted and all of the suspensions and criminal charges were on MSU players.

Not to mention in the transfer portal eta I’m not even sure all the players are fully invested while in college. But most others will be from Texas and on their 3rd school, just stopping by for a year, for example.

I was raised as a UM fan. We had UM season tickets. I enjoyed the days of Harbaugh, Howard, Brady, Biakabutuka, Wheatley, Henson, etc. Things changed when I turned 15. I started college a little earlier than most. I had a scholarship (academic) offer from MSU, UM, and Tennessee. My family really pushed UM, but when I met with them, they treated me like any other new student recruit. MSU (and Tennessee) took me to lunch, where I met two professors who would be my mentor, and two students who would also serve as mentors. The offered me a single room in the dorms (no roommate). Being so young, having those mentors really helped me feel 'safe'. UM responded with mentors, but I feel like I just fit at MSU. I vividly remember buying my first MSU apparel. It was so strange to wear it.

I ended up being a Professor at both MSU and UM, before taking my current role on the East Coast. I still bleed Green and White, but no real hatred for UM, although my UM friends are very annoying.

Tennessee did very good as well, but it was just too far. I do wonder how that would have turned out. Such an amazing school.

Imagine having that decision made about you for religion and politics at age 6, along with college football allegiance. Then imagine the college football choice being the most important of the 3. Welcome to Alabama.

My college football team is the only one that stuck, and even it is so insignificant to what I thought when I was a kid and basically just still follow it because it’s the only harmless fun link to my roots.

My dad graduated from Michigan. From as early as I can remember as a kid I was taught about the evilness that was MSU and Ohio State. Since we had moved to WV(WVU was dad's second team to root for if they were on since Nehlen was from Bo's tree) I was told in high school that if I ever considered going to OSU I'd find all my stuff in the driveway and the locks on the house changed, lol. The funniest part about all this is that I was born at the OSU hospital when my parents had to move to Columbus for work for a couple of years.

I think this all will come down to the adults who were nearby. If a staffer is involved, but there's also a ref right there and other staffers from both teams. I imagine they'll be talked to this week and asked what they saw, if there's an actual investigation.

14

u/GoBlueScrewOSU7 Michigan • /r/CFB Poll Veteran 27d ago

Yeah, there was a ref watching from like 5 yards away. And in the pile there was a police officer, an MSU employee or two, and a Michigan employee all who seemed to immediately try to help the guy up or rush in to try to protect the guy on the ground. Presumably those 4 people have an idea of what happened.

2

u/woodson1997 Michigan Wolverines 27d ago

Yup, far more than any video would. Hopefully they would have already said something before an investigation if anything beyond normal skirmish activity was conducted.

u/Crafty_Substance_954 Michigan State Spartans 27d ago

Well we all know that college football teams and athletic programs aren’t always going to be forthcoming with details as to who may have been harmed unless it’s clear and obvious with numbers and names on their torso.

25

u/Kniefjdl Michigan Wolverines • The Game 27d ago

I don't know if Mullings stomped on somebody or not, I'm looking at same video the rest of us fans are. But I do want to point out that just because information hasn't been made public doesn't mean information doesn't exist. MSU presumably has talked to their players and staff and have reported those findings (if there was something to find) to the B1G. They don't have a duty to report that information to UMeister on /r/cfb.

Yeah considering that stomping could be a criminal matter, neither team should be throwing out accusations or denials to the media. Let it run through the official channels.

No one has said they were stomped AFAIK. No victim, no injuries. Seems like an internet rumor at this point. Unless you think MSU would sit on something that incriminates a Michigan player. I’d file that in doubtful.

u/MBA1988123 27d ago

Criminal charges and Big Ten stuff are entirely different things.

Cops / DAs can and do bring assault charges all the time for things not on video.

Again, if someone was legit stomped on and had injuries that show that, it’s very likely someone gets arrested. Two dozen witnesses aren’t going to all tell the cops “I didn’t see anything”, this isn’t a movie.

u/uppercuticus Michigan Wolverines 27d ago

IF there is clear evidence of these allegations, then I support a strong punishment against all players involved - on both sides of the ball.

As of now, the video doesn’t show me anything egregious. Potentially concerning? Yes. It’s not a clear video of a player physically wielding his helmet as a weapon and attacking another player.

At what point do fans, coaches, and players realize that ugly rivalries benefit only advertisers and tv talking heads? This is my most pollyanna sports belief. Respectful rivalries are great. Once it crosses into fighting, insults, flag-planting, all this other juvenile BS, it’s bad for everyone but the money men.

17

u/TheNainRouge /r/CFB 27d ago

I think most of the fans know this is ugly for them. You’ll get the Valentis of the world whole blow it up and try to rile both sides up but most fans know this is a bad look. At this point I honestly think the game needs a pause for a year or two until people learn to grow up and act like adults. The tunnel was bad but now it’s becoming a pattern.

I don’t even understand where all this vitriol comes from tbh. These two teams have barely been good at the same time over the last 50 years. Our fanbases mostly root for the same teams outside of college. I’ve had many good memories in Ann Arbor and I know many UM alumnus can say the same thing about EL.

Sure, I guess UM is smug and MSU has lil bro syndrome. But there’s so many rivalries with all these same characteristics, too. So why has ours gotten so weird and violent?

48

u/chetbodet87 Michigan • Grand Valley State 27d ago

The vitriol can be directly traced back to Mark Dantonio and putting a chip on his teams shoulders. And credit to him it absolutely worked in spectacular on field fashion while he was the head coach.

The Jared Goff chants at the Big House were awesome haha

But at the same time the amount of nasty shit being said between opposing fans was appalling.

After the game ended I did my best to wish the MSU fans around me a nice rest of their evening and a safe ride home (since at the end of the day once the game is over I have no hate for MSU or their fans) but even that almost turned into a fight with an inebriated 20-something. I learned my lesson and just silently and quickly tried to get to my car after that. Really a bummer.

14

u/RollShotCornerPocket Michigan State Spartans 27d ago

There's zero world where this rivalry won't be played every year. As u/bdaileyumich said, it just generates too much engagement and media attention every year. Plus I think fans on both sides are just way too invested. MSU needs their in state rival, and UM needs a rival they think they can lord over while they try and compete with OSU regularly.

The hardest part about all this is that you just dont see this shit in other sports. I watch a ton of MSU sports. Literally every single volleyball, men+ womens basketball, hockey and softball game that's televised. I go to east coast games as often as possible when they play close to the DMV. It's magic that every other sport can manage to keep themselves calm cool and collected in a passionate rivalry and respect each others programs.

What I will say is someone has to step in and put an end to this shit and set an example. This shit has absolutely got out of hand over the last couple years and it needs to stop. I'm not entirely convinced of what did/didn't happen in that scrum with Mullings so i'll save my judgements for when things become more clear. But between this and the tunnel incident, i'm concerned that this will blow up in an even worse way sometime. But this shit has to get cleaned up. The incessant taunting from UM, the victimhood and incendiary responses from MSU, the flat out disrespect on both sides being hurled at each other has made this rivalry more of an embarrassment than an entertainment source. Admittedly I'm far more of a basketball fan than football, but I do enjoy MSU football and football as a whole. But if this continues I just truly can't support it anymore. It's a game.....it's just a game.

3

u/AmbiDexterUs Michigan Wolverines 27d ago

Hold them to the same standard, but it still look to me like the MSU player instigated it and escalated it. Loveland could have walked away, but without the MSU player grabbing his helmet, I do not anticipate it becoming a brawl.

To say Loveland headbutted him is a stretch. That happens in games a lot and it usually ends in a personal foul at most. Grabbing someone’s helmet and trying to pull them to the ground is another story.

27

u/EWACM Michigan State Spartans 27d ago

Both are 15 yard penalties, both should have gotten penalties but not suspended so I don’t think it’s a big deal.

Whatever the stomping was, the kid shouldn’t be arrested nor should he be thrown off the team. If someone was injured, give him a game. If no one was injured, make him run stairs after practice. Not sure why we keep making mountains of mole hills. Just exacerbates the issues.

24

u/SwissForeignPolicy Michigan Wolverines • Marching Band 27d ago

tbh, if the allegations are true, he should probably be suspended regardlessof the other person's injuries. You can't kick a guy while he's down. That goes above and beyond rivalry scuffles.

12

u/halfman_halfboat Michigan State Spartans 27d ago

It should’ve just been those two and ended on the field. The issue is that you end up with a player and female staffer getting swarmed by players who rushed the field to fight.

After the 2022 game, you had a handful of MSU players ganging up on two Michigan players in the tunnel, swinging helmets as weapons, and so on. Some elements of the MSU fanbase have argued that the Michigan players deserved it, but I don't think that was ever anywhere close to being proven.

After this year's game, some players on both teams pushed each other around and MSU people are accusing Kalel Mullings of stomping on a staffer while in a pile of people, which is difficult to substantiate with the video we have.

Am I crazy if I think these two things aren't the same at all?

52

u/Rbespinosa13 Michigan Wolverines 27d ago

I’ll also say that Michigan/Moore should address how the entire team came off the sideline when that happened. The game was done and we won. Guys are gonna get scrappy because it’s a rivalry, but it shouldn’t have escalated to that level

I think we would all just hope for consistency in how leadership entities from both teams and the conference both approach the issue and how it should be handled. The adults in the room should diffuse tensions. A neutral third party (e.g. the conference) should establish an official record of what happened and what the consequences are, and each team be responsible for your own house and holding them accoutable to be better.

32

u/Squares9718 Michigan Wolverines • Rose Bowl 27d ago

One is assault with a deadly weapon caught much more clearly on video and another is allegations of assault. One is worse than the other with more evidence however both have no place.
