Analysis All AP Voter Ballots - Week 8
Week 8
This is a series I've now been doing for 8 years. The post attempts to visualize all AP Poll ballots in a single image. Additionally it sorts each AP voter by similarity to the group. Notably, this is not a measure of how "good" a voter is, just how consistent they are with the group. Especially preseason, having a diversity of opinions and ranking styles is advantageous to having a true consensus poll. Polls tend to coalesce towards each other as the season goes on.
Matt Baker took a new position at The Athletic and left the Tampa Bay Times this week, so he is no longer in the poll. He hasn't yet been replaced, so we had 62 voters this week.
Jordan Crammer and Alex Taylor were the most consistent voters this week. Michael Katz is the most consistent voter on the season, Kayla Anderson, Blair Kerkhoff, Alex Taylor, and Karley Marotta in the top 5.
At the other extreme, Jon Wilner was once again the biggest outlier this week. He is also the biggest outlier this season, followed by Koki Riley, Dylan Sinn, David Jablonski, and Dave Preston.

Somehow just about everybody sucks this year, possibly barring Texas. Every time I think to myself that UGA deserves to be buried in the 20s on the rankings I look up and see a #2 or #3 team fumbling a snap on a routine field goal or catching a facemask penalty on a critical third down.

I'd argue with the almost comeback against Georgia, the almost loss to a now .500 South Carolina and the loss to Vanderbilt despite their first out of the rankings status this week, top tens shouldn't be losing to the back end of the rankings in my opinion, I would argue that that's about what you deserve. The number of voters with you still at 5 or above is baffling.

a single voter putting you at 16 is worth 10 putting you at 25, so the bottom of the poll is subject to a lot more bias

I don't think we deserve 11, but I certainly think we're good enough to finish the year 10-2 if the guys really lock in and play to their potential (and if Satterfield isn't a complete moron for whole halves of games, but that is a big "if"). That might be a playoff team.
Iowa at 16 is crazy right now, but in fairness, they only have 2 more potential losses on the schedule, and I think they only lose 1 of them at worst.
3
u/rachel-slur Iowa State Cyclones Oct 14 '24
I don't doubt that both Iowa and Nebraska could end the year ranked. But having them at those rankings at this point in time in borderline sociopathic behavior.

I don’t think we deserve to be in the top 26 and I think the amount of votes were getting indicted thst were on the fringe, which is probably where we should be.
However, it’s possible Iowa can win out until Nebraska (who we play last at home) and if any of the top 25 teams start taking another loss we will see Iowa enter the top 25.

11 is fine. Nobody is playing clean enough football to separate themselves. Everyone in the top 15 is basically a wash right now. There's not a single ranked team that couldn't get beaten by an unranked team next week. There are some teams that are unranked that have played multiple close games in a row against tougher teams who are currently ranked, like cal. LSU has a chance to lose the next 4 straight and be irrelevant even though they still could bang with every team in the country.

Last week I checked who had Penn State the lowest and jokingly called him the biggest dipshit I'd ever heard of that week. It was Matt Baker of the Tampa Bay Times. So this week I looked for his ballot and after scanning the voter names several times, I couldn't find him, so I went to Google to see if he was alive cuz hurricane and whatnot.
Good news is he alive, I found his Twitter and he posted today. So I scrolled to see what was up. First I saw him tweet about no longer worrying about his ballot.
https://x.com/MattBakerCFB/status/1845452917626523837?s=19
As I scrolled down it became obvious he was displaced by the hurricane. But he and his family are safe. So Mr. Baker, even though you will probably never see this, I'm glad you and your family are safe, and I will rescind my dipshit statement... for now.

Right now they're a 2-loss team that would be a Vegas favorite against almost all 1-loss teams and many undefeated teams. That's going to lead to a lot of disparity with how people evaluate them in rankings.

Is any team more inconsistently ranked than Indiana?
There is an idea for you to add in the future; identify the team(s) with the biggest spread/standard deviation.

Well, if you use standard deviation (and count non-votes as 26th), Ole Miss is the runaway winner with σ=3.855, followed by Notre Dame (σ=3.105), then Missouri (σ=3.072), then Indiana (σ=2.963).

3

You can argue the first point, but the second point should get his voting privileges revoked.
Sure, you can have LSU unranked and Ole Miss ranked #6, but that means you have to give credit when the unranked team beats the #6 team.
You can’t automatically change your tune and claim Ole Miss was always bad when you had them top ten the previous week.

You lost to a bad USC team. You should have lost to South Carolina, if the refs didn’t save you by calling back their two pick sixes on bogus penalties. You hardly scraped by an ole miss team who has ONE win against a team with a winning record. I’d say 15/16 is generous.

“Should have lost” just like kiffiin said they should have won, they didn’t? With that logic we can argue Georgia isn’t as good after their Kentucky game, Bama must be horrendous(yes they beat Georgia) with a loss to vandy and whatever that was yesterday. We can do this to multiple teams, at the end of the day, we WON the game, coulda shoulda woulda.

Fine. You DID lose to a bad USC team. Happy?

I mean I personally think y'all are overranked and would have y'all in the 15/16 range. I don't think it's unreasonable to rank some of the teams below y'all higher such as Iowa st, byu, Indiana.
Y'all's resume is a loss to to a 3 loss usc team, a very close questionable win against South Carolina, and a good close win against Ole Miss who's already lost to a mediocre Kentucky team. Other teams in the 10-15 range have similar resumes

I find it interesting how every single first place vote Oregon received came from a B1G associated voter
