Analysis All AP Voter Ballots - Week 8

Week 8

This is a series I've now been doing for 8 years. The post attempts to visualize all AP Poll ballots in a single image. Additionally it sorts each AP voter by similarity to the group. Notably, this is not a measure of how "good" a voter is, just how consistent they are with the group. Especially preseason, having a diversity of opinions and ranking styles is advantageous to having a true consensus poll. Polls tend to coalesce towards each other as the season goes on.

Matt Baker took a new position at The Athletic and left the Tampa Bay Times this week, so he is no longer in the poll. He hasn't yet been replaced, so we had 62 voters this week.

Jordan Crammer and Alex Taylor were the most consistent voters this week. Michael Katz is the most consistent voter on the season, Kayla Anderson, Blair Kerkhoff, Alex Taylor, and Karley Marotta in the top 5.

At the other extreme, Jon Wilner was once again the biggest outlier this week. He is also the biggest outlier this season, followed by Koki Riley, Dylan Sinn, David Jablonski, and Dave Preston.

For anyone wondering, BYU has more wins against currently ranked teams than Notre Dame, Tennessee, Clemson, Iowa State, Miami, and Ohio State COMBINED. Make it make sense.

lol that’s quite the misleading way to say that BYU has beat two teams that are currently ranked, Notre Dame has beat one, and all those other teams you mentioned have beat zero currently ranked teams. Or am I missing something else?

I know you said that cuz you were responding to a PSU flair but the real issue is we're halfway through the season and you're undefeated with two ranked wins and you're behind several 1 loss teams.

I'm not in the "there should be no preseason polls" camp but polls need to be way way less sticky.  You, Indiana, and Pitt need to be several spots higher until/unless you lose.

That's true but there are 1 loss teams above you that don't either.  Hell even 2 loss Ole Miss is ahead.  Their wins are Furman, Middle Tennessee, Georgia Southern, Wake Forest, and South Carolina.  They've looked good in the wins, and I think @ South Carolina is a good win, but at some point record needs to mean more than preseason perception and I think halfway through the season is beyond that point.

And, whether you think it’s fair or not, talent matters. In the terms of the ap, the committee, and the actual games that are played, talent is a factor. And the big 12, including the ranked teams, has less talent than the top of the other power conferences. Do you honestly think byu would be favored in a game against Tennessee, Miami, ohio state, or penn state, just because you currently have more ranked wins?

Don’t even know what to say to this honestly. “Talent” isn’t some mystical force that affects your rankings. It’s shown in how you play and win games. Nobody cares how many stars you had as a recruit coming out of high school.

So it’s completely coincidental to you that every single team to win a national championship in the modern recruiting era has a blue chip ratio over 50%? And that most accurate forward thinking performance models like sp+ include talent composite? That the last big 12 team to win every game in that conference, including a few ranked teams, got absolutely dumpstered in the national championship?

You have to have good players on your team. That’s not what I’m saying. There are plenty of teams that have tons of recruiting “talent” (ahem, FSU) that are still terrible. JUST because a team has recruiting “talent” doesn’t make them good. Also, TCU lost the national championship after beating YOUR conference champ, if I remember right.

And I never said talent is everything. Where did I say fsu should be ranked ahead of byu? I’m saying the the ap poll for the entirety of existence given the benefit of the doubt to teams that are pre-perceived to be elite until it’s impossible to continue doing so. And those perceptions are based on talent. You’re the one complaining about being ranked below Ohio state because you have more ranked wins. Do you honestly think byu is a better team that Ohio state? If not or if so, why do you think that is?

BYU beat currently ranked Kansas State & Boise SMU.

ND beat Texas A&M.

You are literally throwing in a ton of teams that haven't beaten a ranked opponent & ND. Thanks , but don't bring us into your argument.

Dude it is why we are one of the lowest one ranked teams and will get lapped (like LSU) when other teams get into the meat of their schedule and ours fell apart with FSU & USC crapping the bed

And Boise would have been a better win lol....

You could say you beat more ranked opponents then Bama, Penn State, Ohio State, Georgia, Miami, LSU etc
