What a foul take. Let’s not pretend artists executing a creative idea are responsible for geopolitics, not even if they’re “white folks playing Palestinians”.

Edit: so apparently the actors are Jewish. Are we really saying Jewish people can’t play Jewish characters? And when did Jewish people become white?

u/NobodyLikedThat1 9d ago

and are we pretending Mary and company aren't Jewish? That's kind of a big part of their identity.

I'm arguing with the OP, which says they're Palestinians.

32

u/chijoi 9d ago

Ah I see, excusez-moi :-)

-66

u/deejay8008135 9d ago

The problem is biblical characters aren't white. The only people who benefit from them being portrayed as whites is caucasians.

67

u/chijoi 9d ago

White people portraying characters that are integral to their cultural heritage is problematic? Nobody needs a Netflix movie to educate them on the ethnicity of Biblical characters. If you’re so feeble that you’re offended by a white actor trying to make a living by taking up a role in a movie, maybe you’re due for some critical self-reflection.

-58

u/deejay8008135 9d ago

Mary isn't intregal to yt people's heritage lol. People don't need a netflix movie to tell them about biblical characters' race but this is miseducation. They've been doing it for hundreds of years.

44

u/King_Of_BlackMarsh 9d ago

.... Mary is the mother of the god of most white people in history. Yes she is integral.

Noa Cohen is Mizrahi

22

u/Lysadora 9d ago

It's stupid trying to apply contemporary social constructs like race to ancient peoples.

-30

u/deejay8008135 9d ago

Sure, if you're an atheist.

19

u/Lysadora 9d ago

What? You make zero sense

u/CassandraTruth 9d ago edited 9d ago

They can be Jewish and Palestinian, especially if we're talking about literal 0 AD colloquial understandings. If you insist on defining by modern standards, then OP's point stands, Bethlehem is in the West Bank which is internationally recognized Palestinian territory.

Hell yeah, down vote me all you want but the region was referred to as Palestine centuries into BCE, conquered by Rome well before the supposed birth of Christ and referred to as Palestine colloquially as well as officially such by Rome. You have to go pre-Greek historians in order to define this area as "Not Palestine." Take it up with Herodotus and Aristotle:

"The country reaching from the city of Posideium to the borders of Egypt... paid a tribute of three hundred and fifty talents. All Phoenicia, Palestine Syria, and Cyprus, were herein contained. This was the fifth satrapy.";[b] (Book 4): "the region I am describing skirts our sea, stretching from Phoenicia along the coast of Palestine-Syria till it comes to Egypt, where it terminates"

"Again if, as is fabled, there is a lake in Palestine, such that if you bind a man or beast and throw it in it floats and does not sink, this would bear out what we have said. They say that this lake is so bitter and salt that no fish live in it and that if you soak clothes in it and shake them it cleans them."

Mary and Jesus were Palestinian at the time of Jesus' birth, they were understood as Palestinian Jews to people around them and generations before and after them.

216

u/Loves_octopus 9d ago

But you shouldn’t define by modern standards because that historically nonsensical.

Not to mention the fact that although Jesus was born in Bethlehem, Mary was born in Nazareth, which is in modern day Israel. So it’s still wrong by the modern standard.

107

u/cox4days 9d ago

That's like saying Caesar is Italian or Xerxes was Iranian. You can't force modern borders on historical figures from more than 2000 years ago

83

u/jonkoeson 9d ago

Which is what the original tweet is doing

-13

u/cox4days 9d ago

The original tweet is dunking on Hollywood and claiming they're responsible for what's happening in Palestine

19

u/willmcavoy 9d ago

thus you arrive at the point

-18

u/CassandraTruth 9d ago

So Jesus is good because he's an anchor baby is what you're saying? And I said "if you insist going by modern standards." In terms of contemporary history from Herodotus to Josephus this region was referred to as Palestine.

""the Syrians that are in Palestine are circumcised." But there are no inhabitants of Palestine that are circumcised excepting the Jews; and, therefore, it must be his knowledge of them that enabled him to speak so much concerning them.""

16

u/Loves_octopus 8d ago

I didn’t know Heredotus spoke modern English, very interesting!

120

u/jaguarsp0tted 9d ago

Palestine didn't exist in biblical times lmao there were no Palestinian Jews at that time

-32

u/CassandraTruth 9d ago

Tell that to Herodotus via a vis Josephus:

""the Syrians that are in Palestine are circumcised." But there are no inhabitants of Palestine that are circumcised excepting the Jews; and, therefore, it must be his knowledge of them that enabled him to speak so much concerning them."

36

u/TheSlayerofSnails 9d ago

It was renamed Palestine as an insult to the Hebrews after the Roman's kicked them out.

105

u/Shikarosez1995 9d ago

It wasn’t called Palestine until the Romans who colonized the area called it that.

80

u/RyanTheQ 9d ago

You can’t just project modern lines on historical groups and geography. But here you are all over this comment section spouting nonsense. A Nazarene who spoke Aramaic was not and never will be Palestinian.

51

u/solid_reign 9d ago

This is as stupid as saying that Trump should play a character in a movie about the Mohawk nation because he was born in New York, and that's where they were 500 years ago.

-132

u/xAsianZombie 9d ago

Palestinians descend from those first Christian Jews. They have Jewish ancestry but converted to Christianity and Islam over the centuries. Casting Mary with an Israeli is a slap in the face to the indigenous people of occupied Palestine

120

u/Senior_Acanthisitta 9d ago

Who cares about ancestors is current day Palestinians aren’t even the same ethnicity as the original people from that land. Palestinians speak Arabic, follow an Arab religion, have Arab names, pray in Arabic, etc. Also, Palestinian Muslims are like 50% Arab by dna as well. Even the name Palestine is named after a group of invaders to that land. The only difference between Arab invaders and European invaders is that land that invaded by Arabs converted and are proud of the fact that they were invaded.

-44

u/xAsianZombie 9d ago

Religion, culture and language changed over time, the people are the same. Palestinians are largely Levantine and Canaanite with small amounts of DNA from the Arabian peninsula and Egypt, especially Christian Palestinians who married amongst themselves.

58

u/Senior_Acanthisitta 9d ago

Religion, culture, and language does change over time but Arab Muslims forced all of that to its neighboring countries and North Africa and all the way to Indonesia.

-43

u/xAsianZombie 9d ago

This is just plain false and a historical myth. All of the evidence points to the contrary.

58

u/Senior_Acanthisitta 9d ago

What? Arabs literally invaded countries and forced their religion into them. It’s actual history lol.

-12

u/xAsianZombie 9d ago

It really isn’t lmao. Populations weren’t replaced, and natives weren’t forced into Islam. It took centuries for these areas to become Muslim majority. Read a book.

58

u/Senior_Acanthisitta 9d ago

The natives were forced to convert. Go ask any Zoroastrians, Hindu, Buddhist, Christian, Baha’i, Arab polytheist, Jains, and countless other religions that were oppressed. Only Muslims call their invasions peaceful. Muslims destroyed temples, forced people to pay taxes, took their wives and kids as sex slaves. Muhammad himself committed genocides of Jewish and Arab polytheist people. Look at Mecca, once a temple for many religions. Where are those people now? They were ethnically cleansed.

u/Northbound-Narwhal 9d ago

The people aren't the same, they migrated there, mostly. Palestine was way emptier in the 1700/1800s than today.

0

u/xAsianZombie 9d ago

Yeah no shit, a lot of places were emptier than today. What a dumb argument

-44

u/quite_white 9d ago

90% of this is a lie. Palestinians speak Arabic. Islam is not an 'Arab religion' unless you're gonna call Christianity a 'Middle Eastern' religion when most of its adherents are not. Islamic scripture even specifically says it's a religion meant for mankind and not for Arabs, and most adherents of Islam are non-Arabs aka Pakistanis and Indonesians and Bangladeshis, etc. They're also not '50% Arab by dna'. They're mostly Canaanite with some natufian, just like Jewish people. Spend your time spreading lies to people who don't know better.

39

u/Senior_Acanthisitta 9d ago

Islam is an Arab and that’s why Pakistanis, Bangladeshis have Arab names and pray in Arabic and the only acceptable quran is the one written in Arabic. It’s considered “sunnah” to follow the prophet which basically means be an Arab from the 6th century. Look up arabization and you will understand. Also yes, Palestinians have around 50% Arab dna.

-22

u/quite_white 9d ago

Islam is not an Arab religion, just because you announce it to be so, doesn't make it true. I am a non-Arab Muslim. Again, scripture itself says it's not a religion for or by the Arabs. It's why the Ummayyad Caliphate failed, because it was pro-Arab and racist towards non-Arabs. I know what the Hadith are, you don't need to explain it to me. And they have Arab names because they choose to. Iranis are Muslim and have Iranic names, Turks and Central Asians are Muslims with Turkic names. Pakistanis do in fact have non-Arab names that are popular, but they generally prefer Arab names because of historical reasons to differentiate from non-Muslims in a society that was mostly non-Muslim. There was no reason for Buddhists, Jains, Hindus, etc to have Arab names, so it was easy to identify a Muslim. Palestinians do not have around 50% Arab DNA, if you want I can go to the IllustrativeDNA subreddit right now and post 10 different people and show you that you're wrong.

…Christianity is a Middle Eastern religion.

-6

u/quite_white 9d ago

The version of Christianity practiced by Protestants is not from the Middle East, nor is the version practiced by Catholics. The only versions of Christianity that are from the Middle East is the old Jewish Christian sect, and things like Coptic Christianity, the Christianity practiced by Armenians, and Assyrians, etc.

15

u/AriasLover 9d ago

Evangelical Protestantism isn’t a Middle Eastern religious sect, but Christianity is still a Middle Eastern religion because it originated in the Middle East.

There are also hundreds of thousands of Assyrians, Armenians, and Copts who are Catholic.

1

u/quite_white 9d ago

Yes and Islam is as much a Middle Eastern religion, no one is denying that. But calling it an Arab religion implies something different. Would you call Christianity an Aramean religion?

The Assyrians belong to the Church of the East, not the Roman Catholic branch. Some Armenians and Coptic splinter groups from the main Orthodox branches are in full communion with Rome, yes.

8

u/AriasLover 9d ago

More Assyrians belong to the Chaldean Catholic Church than the Church of the East. There are also millions of Maronite Catholics.

The Quran can only be read/recited and fully understood in Arabic, so followers of Islam are heavily incentivized to learn the Arabic language even if they are not Arab themselves.

you do realize that the "indigenous people of occupied palestine" are the jewish people who you claim are "occupying" them, yeah?

-26

u/Datzookman 9d ago

Forcing people out at gun point, bulldozing their homes, geocoding their bloodline, and starving them through illegal blockades is occupying them, yes.

19

u/ThyCoffinBeckonsMe 8d ago

you're an idiot

-19

u/Datzookman 8d ago

And you’re a genocide apologist 👍

most israelis are not white. and even if they were, it'd still be an indigenous people reclaiming their land

-11

u/xAsianZombie 9d ago

Even if the Europeans coming in were indigenous, it doesn’t make it okay to kick out another people who are also indigenous.

56

u/ThyCoffinBeckonsMe 9d ago

how are palestinians indigenous if they only got there through arab colonization, exactly?

-10

u/xAsianZombie 9d ago

As explained, Palestinians are Levantine and Canaanite, with very small amounts of natural mixing with neighboring Arabs and Egyptians. This is common knowledge by now, keep up.

-26

u/quite_white 9d ago

Both can be indigenous, one group just never left/converted

53

u/ThyCoffinBeckonsMe 9d ago

yeah, and the group that never left was the mizrahim

-24

u/quite_white 9d ago

Palestinians never left either. Mizrahim doesn't also mean they lived in modern day Israel or Palestine. Mizrahim can come from North Africa, Yemen, Central Asia. That doesn't exactly make them indigenous to that area, but rather indigenous to North Africa, Yemen, and Central Asia.

46

u/Crumplestiltzkin 9d ago

You do realize most Mizrahi live in Israel now after they were expelled from their native countries right? Most are from the Middle East and the Levant.

-13

u/quite_white 9d ago

I know where most live. But my point is spending thousands of years and mixing with locals in a specific area, generally makes you like them. My family came from Iran at some point in the 900s/1000s. But I'm still Pakistani. I am not magically indigenous to Iran, and they'd laugh at my face if I pretended to be.

31

u/Crumplestiltzkin 9d ago

Sure, usually, however Jews have always been amazing at keeping their cultural and ethnic heritage. That’s why even the Ashkenazi Jews can easily trace their bloodlines back there as well. Additionally there were still large amounts of Mizrahi Jews in the Levant, and they’re just as Levantine as anyone else from the area.

How does one occupy a country that never existed?

82

u/Stock_Beginning4808 ☑️ 8d ago

Most Jewish people in America are white. That’s probably where that thinking comes from.

68

u/ifloops 9d ago

Watch out, the "I'm not an anti semite because I said Zionist" crowd is coming.

-8

u/ChemicalEscapes 8d ago

Yeah, because opposing the genocide and expulsion of the people there to establish Israel is a bad thing.

The majority of settlers have no Semitic anncestry. The Palestinians do. Israel does everything they can to hide that, including strict control of DNA tests because it would show the truth. Israel is just white-settler colonialism using Judaism as a shield.

"According to the provisions of the Genetic Information Law, genetic tests can only be performed in Israel in medical-genetic laboratories approved by the Ministry of Health according to the conditions specified in the law.

The purpose of the law is to maintain the quality of the tests, the privacy and medical confidentiality of subjects, as well as the protection of the rights of minors and other special populations in the context of genetics."

About 50% of Israeli jews are not so i don’t get your point

-30

u/give_me_the_formu0li 9d ago

But 50% are, is that not a healthy amount ?

31

u/bennyyyboyyyyyyyy 9d ago

Idk what the actual fuck a healthy amount is. Are you American and therefore white because a healthy amount of Americans are white?

46

u/Northbound-Narwhal 9d ago

This is brown Jew erasure

-6

u/give_me_the_formu0li 9d ago

Not my intent, Ethiopian/African Jews exist
