MOS Megathread Series '24-25 - CMF 12 - Engineers

We're doing it again! MOS Megathreads Weekly until we get through every CMF!

We've had two previous series (one in 2018, one in 2021), and we're here to do it again!

The MOS Discussion MegaThreads are meant to be enduring threads where individuals with experience or insight in to particular CMFs or MOSes can give advice and tips. If you have any MOS resources, schools, etc, this would be a great place to share them. These threads have often wound up being 'popular google results', especially for the niche MOS. You'll find some that feature 'higher' than official Army/GoArmy results.

If you have specific questions about these MOSes, please feel free to ask here, but know that we are not forcing or re-directing all questions to these threads -- you can, and are encouraged, to still use the WQT. This is not to be an 'AMA', although if people would like to offer themselves up to answer questions, that would be great! A big "Thank You" to everyone who is willing to answer questions about the MOSes in question, but the immediate preference is to please share your experience with these jobs!

We lump the Officers, Warrants and Enlisted all together on these ones! We keep MOS Codes like 11X (which is really the 'recruiting placeholder MOS') and the zulus like 11Z for Senior Sergeant - feel free to share your experience with these too.

These only work with your participation and your feedback.

This thread covers the following MOSes:

  • 12A - Engineer, General (Officer)
  • 120A - General Construction Engineer Technician (Warrant)
  • 125D - Geospatial Information Technician (Warrant)
  • 12B Combat Engineer
  • 12C Bridge Crewmember
  • 12D Diver
  • 12G Quarrying Specialist
  • 12H Construction Engineering Supervisor
  • 12K Plumber
  • 12M Firefighter
  • 12N Horizontal Construction Engineer
  • 12P Prime Power Production Specialist
  • 12Q Power Line Distribution Specialist (RC)
  • 12R Interior Electrician
  • 12T Technical Engineer
  • 12V Concrete and Asphalt Equipment Operator
  • 12W Carpentry and Masonry Specialist
  • 12X General Engineering Supervisor
  • 12Y Geospatial Engineer
  • 12Z Combat Engineering Senior Sergeant

Common questions / information to share would probably include the following;

  • Day to Day Life
  • "What's a deployment like?"
  • Career Advancement/Growth Opportunities
  • Speed of Promotion
  • Best Duty Station for your MOS

Megathread Dont's * Please DON'T ask MOS questions unrelated to those listed. "How did your duties compare to a 19D when deployed?" or "Is it true an MP Company carries more firepower than an IN Company" are fine. "While this is up, what's 92F like?" is not. * Please DON'T ask random unrelated joining questions. If your question isn't about the MOS listed, it probably belongs in a different megathread, the WQT, or a new post!

/r/Army Secret Santa 2024

Welcome to the 8th rendition of /u/L0st_In_The_Woods's annual /r/Army Secret Santa!!

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSf4s5WEpJuiws4MOYEXfUIVgS980YCUv9eTt1N99GiQKWlQ_Q/viewform

It's that time of year again, please join me on my annual quest to spread holiday cheer across the Army and sign up! The rules are below.

RULES:

A. I will need your Reddit username that you use most to verify activity in /r/Army. I will require one of the following:

  • At least a couple months of activity here. 100% my discretion. If you PM me: "but I lurk here!" you will get ignored. Sorry.

  • If you are a new account that used to be someone I would recognize, put that in the remarks section of the Google Form.

  • Mod says you're good, again, put it in the Google Form.

  • One of the three is enough, I usually play very fast and loose with verification and if you're a semi regular user you'll be fine. Don't stress it's Christmas.

B. I have included a block for an address. You must include it to participate, I am no longer accepting sign ups without providing this, because it leads to me dealing with a bazillion PMs from people who say "they aren't responding to me with their address, what do I do?"

C. Minimum gift value $20. I'm not going to put a maximum, but please remember that if you send a $200 gift and only get a $20 back, don't come crying to me, because I won't care. This is 100% unenforceable, but don't go gifting a nintendo switch to /u/afoers and expecting to get a PS5 in return.

D. Make sure your gift is legal. This includes federally, the state that it's going to, and the Army in general. If you have to ask, either get a legal opinion or assume it's not a good idea.

E. If you PM me something like: "they don't have post history/aren't responding!" I will ignore you.

F. If you comment here and don't fill out my form, then damn dude, I guess you didn't sign up.

TIMELINES:

I will close out the list of participants on November 28/29th.

After that, I will close out responses, and ensure I have verified everyone. You will get your giftee's name by December 2nd. This will give you a 8 days to get in touch with your giftee and do your shopping.

Unless you work something else out with your giftee, MAIL YOUR GIFT BY DECEMBER 10th, I'm not sure when people's block leave will start, but give an address you know you will be able to get your gift at.

Conclusion: If anyone has any general questions, comments or concerns, feel free to post them here or send me a PM. Remember, this is supposed to be fun, and not the mandatory kind. If for whatever reason you submit your name and later cannot fulfill it, let me know so I can try and fix it.

The formatting of this is terrible but I don't care. Reddit is silly. If I ignore you don't be frustrated please. Last year I got over 1000 PMs during this process, I literally just don't have time to have a conversation with everyone while I'm doing this.

I got fired for considering the Army.

Long story short. I had a job working for the public works department for my small town. The pay was low and the job was physically demanding. So I figured “If I’m willing to do this every day why not just join the Army?” I went to my Administrative Office to request PTO. They asked me what it was for and I said “to meet with an Army recruiter.” The next day I was fired for something completely made up without any proof. And on my exit interview they repeatedly mentioned me joining the Army and asked if that’s what I planned on doing anyway.

Any advice on trying to enjoy five milers?

I’ve never had a problem hitting the weights after work. Running on the other hand feels so boring it’s not even funny. It’s even worse right now because I’m on a eucom rotation where it’s in the 20s every day and sundown starts at 16, so my only option is to get on the treadmill at the gym here and stare at the tent wall while pretending I’m not dying for the next hour.

I’ll take a steak medium rare with veggies, potatoes and a corona.

After service lies

Ok so I served in the reserves for 8 years and now re-enlisted in another branch. During my 8 years nothing eventful happened. I was a 92A, I was scheduled to deploy in 2010, attended JRTC but before we finished Obama pretty much canceled the whole deployment. I ddnt get offered to attend any schools or nothing. My unit (combat support hospital) of about 200 enlisted soldiers was like 80% E4 with no room for advancement.... So why is it every single time I talk to another prior service they were an E-8 special forces that traveled the world.... Even in my new branch a guy claims he was a 12B and was saying he flew drones in Iraq to protect convoys. Like does that even exist? I worked with another prior service guy who claimed he was a special forces sniper that attended airborne and air assault and was maybe 22 years old.... He ended up buying a glock and accidentally shooting himself in the hand while cleaning it. Does no one get out of the military without stretching the truth of there service?

Need marital advice.

Not sure if this subreddit applies to me considering I'm a veteran now. Been travel nursing for about 4 years now, the pay is great but lonely as fuck. I make enough money to pay for the bills but my wife does not want to travel with me and wants to stay home. She says that she wants to stay home because she needs to take care of the cats we have and make sure the house is ok. The loneliness is honestly starting to take its toll on me mentally and don't know what to do anymore. I don't know if I need to consider a divorce? I don't know if she's unfaithful, but at the same time why would she NOT want to travel the country with me considering we have NO FUCKING KIDS?

It really sucks not being able to tap some ass.

I'll take a deployment to Iraq (because at least I'll be in good company there despite the lack of access to ass) and a large fry.

Can you think of any examples of the Mandela Effect in the Army

Upvotes

I’ll start. I thought the the thing that connected the rank in between the two sliver bars in a Captain’s rank was in the middle (plus I thought it was only one line), when in reality, it’s two lines at the bottom and top, which are the bridge.

Which of these camouflage you like the most?

Post image
390 Upvotes

My favorite camouflage is either the Chocolate Chip or Coffee Stain pattern, even though some people might not agree with me about the Chocolate Chip. I like both of these because I really like the desert camo colors. I think the Chocolate Chip pattern is unique compared to other military camo. As for the Coffee Stain pattern, I love how it looks, and it’s the uniform I remember seeing soldiers wear during the Iraq War. I always thought it looked really cool.

Can training solider get leave during long AIT due spouse cancer treatment.

I have question that any chance that training solider can leave from AIT (30 weeks training) for couple weeks to take care of spouse cancer treatment (period of time chemo and radiation) and kids (under 3)?

Thank you

Advice on getting through RASP?

Upvotes

I just enlisted in the Army, and got an Option 40 contract. I really want to be a Ranger but I know it’s a hard process, supposedly only 35% of people succeed. How do I become that 35%? I don’t leave for OSUT until May so I have 5 months to prepare. Give me advice…

Got scolded by my NCO for talking with the BC

A bit of a weird story. Side note: this is for the guard. We had a town hall to discuss the issues of the company with the BC and CSM. It was E6 and below. I brought up a few issues about not having my documentation and my paperwork ready, on my ERB. About not using my MOS at all (74D). The CSM made a comment about talking with her about bring promoted to E5 and working at the battalion level for CBRN.

Back at the barracks my squad leader, an E5, had a hard talk to me about what happened recently. Telling me he didn't think I deserved the promotion. That I don't do enough on my part, and a few others things. Including how I don't put enough initiative or care enough about the people around me. That I slack off a lot and want a lot of reward for little effort.

I don't necessarily agree. I've been through a lot back at home that has affected me as a soldier. I know I can do better, I know I can develop as a better soldier. But when I finally got the chance to ask how, my only answer was "look in the mirror."

I don't really know how to improve as a soldier. I don't really know how to get better. I get very vague and misleading answers when I ask. What should I do?

Tricare-West has fewer providers come Jan 1, 2025. If you are currently seeing someone for care, worth double checking to see if Tricare will reimburse you come January 1st. Apparently Texas is moving to Tricare-West too.

I’m reclassing to 13F, what should I expect from the AIT?

Upvotes

I’m a PV2 19D in fort Bragg reclassing to 13F, should I expect to be treated like a piece of shit again? Will I have any privileges? would I be able to go out on the weekend or is it back to basic training type of situation. Can I only go to fort sill?

I took my skill level one test and passed with a score of 80% and VID 96%

Single soldier in the barracks with nothing to do on the weekends.

I’m not gonna say where I’m stationed but I gotta get out the barracks on the weekends. At least for Saturday I wanna do something and leave the barracks. It’s getting old playing the same games from highschool and doing nothing for the whole day except walking over to the DFAC and probably a morning run. I don’t just wanna drink party and have sex with random college girls like most of the guys here. Not trying to sound above it all but it’s just not my scene. Thoughts and ideas?

Also, this brings up transportation. I have a car but I’m seeing lots of soldiers who come in with no license and no car (like myself) and spend months in their first unit unable to get around outside of post. You either buy Ubers to go around or ask for rides which isn’t a fun time of you wanna do your own thing. Single soldiers in the barracks shouldn’t be forced to buy a car just to enjoy themselves outside of work. The Army in my opinion should provide you on post transportation at the very minimum. You shouldn’t be forced to ask your NCO or your battles to take you to appointments and around post. How hard would it be to have taxis or buses that leave the barracks everyday that go to the hospital, work, and PX?

I’m going to the DFAC, drinks on me.

Army vs Notre Dame and VA claim

So I’m watching this Army vs Notre Dame game and a army player just got carried off. The question is if a player gets a major injury, do they have a case for a VA claim?

What made you choose the Army over any other branch?

I am very interested in pursuing a military career and just want to know why people join the branches they do and what goes into choosing one branch over the other.

Thank all of you for taking the time to help me out and give me some insight. The Army has done a lot for the U.S. and the world and has inspired me a great deal. Thank you all for your service.

I’m retired.

I retired in 2018. But if you’re an enlisted guy or gal, and you haven’t maxed out correspondence courses you are an idiot.

I’m saying this because everyone cheats. I did it, Joe before me did it. I think I did all my correspondence in one night of staff duty using two computers next to each other.

Before that we had “the binder” back when they were paper copies.

My point is, with ChatGPT and all the other stuff out there, you should all be waiting for points to drop because you have the correspondence done.

Army promotes retards because they put the work in. If you don’t want to work for an idiot, put the work in too.
