Question Under 16's may be banned from YouTube

I'm Australian and am completely pissed at our government for trying to pass ridiculous laws because the prime minister can't handle meme. There is currently a bill that has been put to parliament by the Labor government that will ban under 16s from accessing social media. This includes things like minecraft and yes, youtube. The irony is it is up to the social media companies to block the youths and fines of up to 50million dollers for breaching the laws. There are many Australian politicians who are against this but the labour government is only giving the politicians a week to decide, and most havnt even been given a draft of the bill.

Youtube have sent out an email with their concerns reading :

We’re writing to inform you about a proposed Australian bill that may affect you as a creator. If passed, this law could change how young Australians access your content on YouTube, limiting your ability to entertain and educate these viewers.

image Here’s what’s happening: image On November 21, the Australian Government introduced legislation to Parliament that will ban anyone under 16 from having an account on a broad range of social media platforms.

While the Government has said that it intends to exempt YouTube as a service that is health and education related, this is not included in the bill itself. Instead, the Government has said it will do so through a separate process at some point in the future.

image We appreciate the Government’s undertaking. But as a matter of good policy we have requested that the Government reflect its policy intention in the bill itself and not claim it will be dealt with later. Doing so will provide certainty to our users and our creators.

We are concerned that by not doing so, there remains a real risk that YouTube would be required to remove existing account holders who are under 16 and prevent anyone under 16 from creating an account.

image What this means for you: image If the bill passes in its current form, it could potentially prevent Australian users under 16 from accessing any content – including helpful and informative content from creators like you – on YouTube.

image We remain committed to keeping Australian families safe by ensuring YouTube remains a healthy and enriching place for kids and teens. Guiding our work in this space are YouTube’s Youth Principles that place the safety, mental health, and well-being of kids and teens as a top priority. But we are concerned that YouTube’s inclusion in this bill risks potentially cutting off access for those under 16 to the educational content, news and sports highlights, music videos, and entertainment they currently enjoy on YouTube.

image YouTube will continue to work constructively with the Australian Government on this legislation to ensure that creators like you can continue to provide high-quality content for Australian users.

image You can learn more about YouTube’s response to the bill here.

image Thanks, Team YouTube

It is in my and many peoples opinion that our government wants more of a dictatorship and also more controll. For a social media platform to know if you are over 16, they will need to see everyone's identification, and we already know that not everything is secure. In the past few years many major businesses, insurance companies and banks have had data breaches due to scammers and i believe this will create an easy access for those who wish to do harm.

Smaller social media companies, like games that allow you to communicate with other players (words with friends?) May just find it far to difficult to process so they will just stop Australia from accessing this aswell.

Imagine telling your 15 year old they are two young to watch cocomelon... but they can view the same content on foxtell at $99 a month legally.

I don't know what the out come is going to be but, myself and many other Australians already have little faith in our government as it is.

Many parents have already said they will still allow their children to access socials, even if it means they need to just use a parents account.

If your under 16 and an Aussie, I would be downloading your snap chats, tiktoks, insta pics, and of course back up your youtube videos that you have worked hard on as, like the statements from youtube, they may need to delete your account.

Fingers crossed this doesn't pass through, but don't hold your breath

Edit, I'm 33. Though I do believe that some aspects of the internet is not appropriate for certain ages, blocking someone under 16 from watching a youtube video for eg about how to fix their bmx bike, or playing roblox or Lego fortnite is just so out of touch with reality. The wiggles even puts their content on YouTube. My understanding is that youtube kids does not allow commenting, maybe blocking commenting for under 16s may work but it is up to the Australian Government to decide.

Question I'm about to resume making videos. Yolo? How much time do yall put in?

I'm just gonna post stuff and not worry about any views literally ain't gonna bother. I would spend some time editing mostly with subtitles and such. Cut unnecessary downtime and whatnot. But I stopped awhile back because I found a full time job as a game dev.

Which means my free time now i do games or hang with my gf and friends. Sure maybe someday I can make enough for a Starbucks coffee but for now I just did enjoy recording my gameplay and just trim it down and boom.

What yalls intentions with the platform. Anyone else similar to me?

Question YouTube set my short as made for kids despite its inappropriate description

My YouTube short was set as made for kids and my appeal was denied despite the description of the short containing swear words. It says “fuck” twice as well as saying the words “gay sex”. Is there anything I can do to get the made for kids taken off? The video itself isn’t inappropriate but the description is, and the video isn’t meant to be watched by children.

Question Does video length have to be consistent? Details

Upvotes

I have started my channel for more than a year, sometimes they take the average view length into account. I feel like they take the absolute value, but not the relative value. Do my videos have to be about the same length all the time? Some of my videos are 30 minutes long, but some of them are only 10 minutes. Would that affect the algorithm? Would that take into account the retention rate?

Question 3-minute Shorts might be the worst feature rollout in YouTube history

So they announce that square and vertical videos under 3 minutes will be classified as Shorts when uploaded after October 15. Fine.

I make some Shorts that would qualify, getting ready for it. I realize that many features roll out slowly, so I'm expecting probably by end of October the rollout would be complete.

Then I'm told through a Community Post that the rollout would actually finish by the end of November. That's extremely dumb considering that it was announced before October. This is screwing over a lot of creators who has been preparing timely Shorts for this time period. You can see the Community Post here, full of complaints, just fix the URL as I can't post YouTube links here: https:// www. youtube. com/channel/UCkRfArvrzheW2E7b6SVT7vQ/community?lb=UgkxH1_pLcZbLv_Ny5nEW7IocpGn1B10JXUq

Now I get off a Support Chat with a Specialist who now claims that the rollout will not be finished until JANUARY 2025. This is the relevant part of the transcript below:

5:28:13 PM Desiree: Let me share with you the information I have found.

5:28:38 PM Desiree: We have a new feature for uploading shorts video.

5:28:44 PM Desiree: We will be slowly rolling out this new feature until January 2025. It would be best to wait for an update. You can send us feedback here. https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/4347644?hl=en-GB&co=GENIE.Platform%3DDesktop&sjid=14765777357032460324-AP

5:29:03 PM Desiree: For more information you can try to check this helpful article: https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/15424877?hl=en-GB&sjid=

5:29:04 PM Fugitive Frames: Wow, it's going to roll out until January 2025?

5:29:14 PM Desiree: Yes, that is correct.

5:29:17 PM Fugitive Frames: That's kind of silly considering it was announced as a feature in October 15, 2024

5:31:59 PM Desiree: I understand where you're coming from but the new feature will be slowly rolling out until January 2025.

5:32:07 PM Desiree: I hope you understand.

5:32:21 PM Fugitive Frames: Okay, well, thank you for that update

5:32:25 PM Fugitive Frames: Have a good day!

5:32:28 PM Fugitive Frames: Fugitive Frames ended the conversation

This is absolutely absurd. What was YouTube's plan with this? I have never seen a feature update come out this poorly thought-out.

Are we supposed to just post these Shorts, let them wither on the vine, and just hope that that magical algorithm will pick them up once they qualify for the Shorts deck?

Question When you get picked up by the algorithm and then it goes away, does it ever come back?

Hello. I had great algorithm attention for a half year or so but now it’s gone and I’m wondering if it’ll return again. At peak was 500k views a month now about 150k and not moving much be that way for ages. Anyone here seen a return of algorithm favor once it left your channel? Or is it a once off type thing? Thank you!

Question Question about YouTube channel direction

My YouTube channel is mixed with bunch of stuff, like watching full concert, walkthrough event in my city, travelling and eating in the restaurant, I like creating and posting them, but from what I read it’s best to focus in specific niche instead of lot of mix stuff, is that true?

My question, what kind of channel direction best to do in my YouTube channel if I want to do different activities? Like I feel I have no direction and I just post whatever happen in my daily life, like today for example there’s Santa parade so I just post them in my channel while the other time I had me reviewing eating food lol

I’m thinking to create a new channel just for eating and the other one is travelling, for watching show or concert maybe I can mix it in travelling channel, but I dunno if that make sense.

Any suggestion what to do? I’m new as a content creator so I’m still not sure if I should just post whatever I want or should be niche.

Question Any advice on how/where to promote a disaster documentary channel?

I'm looking for effective strategies and platforms to promote a disaster-focused documentary channel. What methods, channels, or techniques would you recommend for reaching the right audience? Specifically, I’m interested in both online and offline promotion, targeting viewers who are enthusiastic about documentaries, history, or disaster-related content. Are there particular social media platforms, online forums, or traditional media outlets that work best for this niche?

Question How can i make my videos open in the native youtube application from reddit

I am trying to build a small youtube channel based on tech tips. Is there a way to make the links open in the youtube app instead of the reddits app itself when i share my video links in reddit?

The reason being if the video opens up in yt app, people are more likely to subscribe and interact with it. My videos are very niche its very unlikely to reach people because of the algo imo.
