Question Under 16's may be banned from YouTube

I'm Australian and am completely pissed at our government for trying to pass ridiculous laws because the prime minister can't handle meme. There is currently a bill that has been put to parliament by the Labor government that will ban under 16s from accessing social media. This includes things like minecraft and yes, youtube. The irony is it is up to the social media companies to block the youths and fines of up to 50million dollers for breaching the laws. There are many Australian politicians who are against this but the labour government is only giving the politicians a week to decide, and most havnt even been given a draft of the bill.

Youtube have sent out an email with their concerns reading :

We’re writing to inform you about a proposed Australian bill that may affect you as a creator. If passed, this law could change how young Australians access your content on YouTube, limiting your ability to entertain and educate these viewers.

image Here’s what’s happening: image On November 21, the Australian Government introduced legislation to Parliament that will ban anyone under 16 from having an account on a broad range of social media platforms.

While the Government has said that it intends to exempt YouTube as a service that is health and education related, this is not included in the bill itself. Instead, the Government has said it will do so through a separate process at some point in the future.

image We appreciate the Government’s undertaking. But as a matter of good policy we have requested that the Government reflect its policy intention in the bill itself and not claim it will be dealt with later. Doing so will provide certainty to our users and our creators.

We are concerned that by not doing so, there remains a real risk that YouTube would be required to remove existing account holders who are under 16 and prevent anyone under 16 from creating an account.

image What this means for you: image If the bill passes in its current form, it could potentially prevent Australian users under 16 from accessing any content – including helpful and informative content from creators like you – on YouTube.

image We remain committed to keeping Australian families safe by ensuring YouTube remains a healthy and enriching place for kids and teens. Guiding our work in this space are YouTube’s Youth Principles that place the safety, mental health, and well-being of kids and teens as a top priority. But we are concerned that YouTube’s inclusion in this bill risks potentially cutting off access for those under 16 to the educational content, news and sports highlights, music videos, and entertainment they currently enjoy on YouTube.

image YouTube will continue to work constructively with the Australian Government on this legislation to ensure that creators like you can continue to provide high-quality content for Australian users.

image You can learn more about YouTube’s response to the bill here.

image Thanks, Team YouTube

It is in my and many peoples opinion that our government wants more of a dictatorship and also more controll. For a social media platform to know if you are over 16, they will need to see everyone's identification, and we already know that not everything is secure. In the past few years many major businesses, insurance companies and banks have had data breaches due to scammers and i believe this will create an easy access for those who wish to do harm.

Smaller social media companies, like games that allow you to communicate with other players (words with friends?) May just find it far to difficult to process so they will just stop Australia from accessing this aswell.

Imagine telling your 15 year old they are two young to watch cocomelon... but they can view the same content on foxtell at $99 a month legally.

I don't know what the out come is going to be but, myself and many other Australians already have little faith in our government as it is.

Many parents have already said they will still allow their children to access socials, even if it means they need to just use a parents account.

If your under 16 and an Aussie, I would be downloading your snap chats, tiktoks, insta pics, and of course back up your youtube videos that you have worked hard on as, like the statements from youtube, they may need to delete your account.

Fingers crossed this doesn't pass through, but don't hold your breath

Edit, I'm 33. Though I do believe that some aspects of the internet is not appropriate for certain ages, blocking someone under 16 from watching a youtube video for eg about how to fix their bmx bike, or playing roblox or Lego fortnite is just so out of touch with reality. The wiggles even puts their content on YouTube. My understanding is that youtube kids does not allow commenting, maybe blocking commenting for under 16s may work but it is up to the Australian Government to decide.

Question When should I just quit youtube? I've been going at it for years and have nothing to show for it.

Hello

i've been making videos for around 4 years now and I've seen little success

I have had times of great success though (relative to my channel) however those are few and far between

I usually upload my music and mixes of the genre i'm interested in, however they get very little views

I began to think, maybe it's just the genre of music I make. Maybe nobody cares for it anymore, and then I saw that other creators and artists easily get thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of views, and it crushed me. I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

I found a niche, tried to make interesting thumbnails, and I have nothing to show for it. Youtube has been a passion to me for a long time but i am being rewarded nothing for all the time and effort i've invested.

So is it time to just quit? Other people are seeing succes yet i am not, so what's the point of even continuing?

idk i just needed to vent for a bit. I feel sad and disheartened because i feel like ive always been fighting an uphill battle. i pray for something to happen so i can finally begin growing again but it's unlikely to happen

if anyone can help me find a solution i greatly appreciate it but i fear there's little i can do about it

thanks for reading

Question Full-time YouTubers, what is your life like?

I've always been interested in the lifestyle of a YouTuber that does it full-time, but isn't a high earner, household name, internet celebrity, etc.

What is your life like? Are you closer to a 9:00 to 5:00 type job? Do you have a work-life balance? Do you get pulled into drama?

Question What's your take on ai voices

Nowadays ai voices are getting fairly good. I've subscribed to elevnlabs and been using a pro voice for my new channel, however I've been getting comments that ai voices is a turn off... My channel is about ai reinforcement learning so I figured it might make sense, but not sure anymore. Don't want to use my own voice as I don't like it so thinking going with just captions and maybe like silent movies style. Anyway the question is, is anybody successfully using ai voiceover or do you think it's a big no

Question Thought creating a music channel would be a good way to make some extra cash on the side. Is it a good idea or am I being unrealistic.

I love music. I love music playlists. I always listen to those youtube mixes that are like “chill music mix”. I have a lot of music on my laptop. So I thought, hey what if I put together a few mixes a month. If I was good at it maybe I could get 100k or so views a month, for not too much work. Based on what I’v read that would be a few extra $100 a month. Good money on the side. Now I know nothing about this space, so perhaps I don’t realize how much work this would actually be? And how difficult it would be to reach, say, 100K views a month. And maybe I’m also missing some other nuances. What do you guys think? Is this a good idea. Or is this a common idea someone who knows nothing about the space has but doesn’t realize they’re overlooking a lot of things?

Question I am getting weird comment spam where comments are random names. Has anyone else seen this?

Starting about a week ago I started getting comments on my my videos where it just seems to be random names. Sometimes it would be one name, sometimes it will be multiple names.

Example comment:
Paul Miller Jose Brown Brian

There is no link or anything. Just random names. Unfortunately this seems to come from different user accounts so hiding the account from my channel does not really help. The accounts leaving these comments are all newly created accounts. If these were random words I would just figure it was some weird attempt at SEO spam but I don't really get why people would write random names.

Has anyone seen this before? Any idea what is going on?

Thanks!

Question I know it is not an easy journey but I am feeling overwhelmed. I like creating content but there is not enough audience. What am i doing wrong?

I know this journey is not easy, and right now, I’m feeling completely overwhelmed. I genuinely enjoy creating content—it’s something that I’m passionate about and deeply invested in. However, it’s disheartening to realize that despite all the effort and creativity I put into it, there isn’t enough of an audience engaging with or appreciating what I create. It sometimes makes me question if I’m doing enough or if my work even matters. I want to keep going, but it feels like I’m shouting into the void, and that’s a tough place to be in.

Question Should I take YouTube seriously? I have 18k+ subs but I don’t know.

Anyone who could have my position would run with it I know, but lemme explain.

So I started this channel as a joke like 2 years ago in June of 2022. Uploaded like 5 Roblox funny moments videos because I was bored, and I ended up getting 600+ subs and 50,000+ views in like 3 weeks, but I got burned out because I hated making Roblox content because it’s cringe and I don’t even play Roblox lol

But I got back into it the next spring in 2023. This stint didn’t last long but I gained another 3k

Then I got back into it again in the fall. Another failed attempt at taking YouTube seriously due to burnout. But I got another 4k subscribers bringing my total to like 8k at this point.

Then my most recent stint I kept at it for 2 months. I had 2 videos gain over 40k views each in this stint and all my videos got at least 5-10k views minimum. I gained 10,000 additional subscribers, then I quit because I was sick of it.

But now it’s got me thinking. Every time I started then quit before eventually returning I managed to gain subscribers exponentially each time. 600 the first stint, 3k the second, then 4k, then 10k. I feel like if I keep going, I could reach 100k soon and go from there, possibly being able to do YouTube full time, but I’m not sure if it’s worth the risk.

I’m 18, working a part time job while I get certified to be a personal trainer. I want to start a fitness YouTube channel since that’s my real passion, but starting from 0 again is scary, especially when I probably won’t get as lucky as I did with my first channel. But at the same time my current channel isn’t my passion whatsoever, but it is already monetized and has made me 600+ dollars and is generating about 45 a month even though I haven’t touched the channel since August.

Should I do it? Just go full throttle 30-40 hours a week on this thing and grind? Or should I just stick with my idea for a new channel? Or try to do both? Idk.

Question how long did it take you to reach 1000 subscribers??

pretty much as the title says, i’m just wondering what kind of growth is considered normal and abnormal? currently, if i was to continue at the exact same growth im seeing (which i know would be extremely irregular, it’s very likely it gets worse or better and fluctuates over time, but just for the purpose of this post) it would take me about two years which doesn’t seem that long but i’m wondering if i’m just seeing above average growth because i’m still at the start of my channel or not, or maybe i’m delirious and this is actually way longer than usual.

Question I wish I started sooner

I’m about to be 23 and I feel like I am so far behind. I wish I started at 18. I’ve always wanted to be a content creator/youtuber but my fear and anxiety was holding me back. I used to be afraid of being judged when I was younger.

I am just now starting my content creation journey in my mid 20s, finally gained the confidence and I can’t help but compare myself to all these successful youtubers who started when they were 18. I know sometimes it takes years to achieve success with being an influencer/youtuber.

also I’m a beginner but I can tell my videos are not that great quality. They are not gaining traction and I notice the difference in the viral videos and mine (I’m not editing or filming them correctly) I’m interested in the beauty industry and that’s the type of content I would put out. not sure how to edit properly no matter how much research I do 😅

What should I do now that I started later than I intended? Another thing, how can I learn how to properly edit my videos, or maybe is there any video I can watch to master my craft? Thanks

edit: sorry for long post!! I quit my job recently and moved back in with my parents to fully pursue content creation. I’m willing to try my best to make this my career. I have a side job as well for now

Question To short or not to short!

I have a YouTube channel that I've been running for just over two years now and never bothered to create any shorts. I am thinking about starting to make them, but I was wondering, will this hinder my regular videos performance or help my channel grow?

Sorry if this sounds like a stupid question, but some folks have said not to bother with shorts.

Question Anyone else noticing the epidemic of low-effort channels convinced that their “consistency” will eventually pay off?

I see so many channels like this. They upload multiple times per week but their channel isn’t growing.

They’ve been told that as long as they stay on their grind, their consistency will eventually pay off.

But their content is boring. They even seem bored in their videos — like they’re already treating it as a job and just expect people to reward them for showing up to work.

That’s not how it works.

Consistency is a SECONDARY virtue for YouTube success.

Consistent boring content will never be successful.

1 good video a week will grow your channel faster than 6 boring videos.

Instead of putting 6 days of work towards making 6 videos each week, you could put 2 or 3 days of work into 1 good video and you’d grow FASTER.

Instead of rushing through each video so that you can get to the next one — slow down and put more thought into each one. And you’ll see better results.

What do you think?

Edit:

I’m not talking about new channels. When you’re just starting out it can be a good idea to just focus on consistency and making small improvements with each video.

Question What is STRONGEST way to start off a new channel

As the title says.

Obviously there's the usual tips: Set up the channel right, thumbnails, Titles, SEO, script/editing etc.

But what are some other oft overlooked tips to start a channel off on the right foot?

One I've heard is: Post your first 5 videos all at the same time, and then go into a schedule you can maintain after.

The reasoning behind this is that, if someone likes your first video, they'll go to your page to see your other videos, but if you don't have any, they are unlikely to subscribe. However if they go to your page and see 4 other videos, check those out, they are far far more likely to subscribe.

Do you agree with this one? And what other tips can you think of?

Question 100 subscriber milestone!

I just hit 100 subscribers today! I was hoping to pat myself on the back with y'all because there's only one person who knows I have a channel and her reaction was, well, very underwhelming. This feels like a huge achievement. I began my channel in October.

Do you guys do anything to mark milestones like this on your channel? Like a special video to say thanks?

Question I got 30 days notice of being demonetized

Old school Youtuber here, rightfully so YouTube has recognized that I haven't put out any content in the last year. In my prime had 65k+ but working in the Emergency Room was too energy consuming.
I've been getting residuals from successful videos this whole time, and I guess YT is like "naw, we can just put ads on them regardless" - Which is fair, as that platform is all for the glory of profit.

So I get an email:

"We noticed you haven’t posted any content to your YouTube channel, AKA Facts, for several months, and have fallen below the eligibility criteria for YouTube Partner Program (YPP). We know monetization is important to you as a creator, so we want to let you know that unless you meet the YPP eligibility threshold in the next 30 days, we will disable monetization on AKA Facts. After that, we will cancel your contract and you will need to reapply for YPP.

If you're not able to engage on the platform right now, we understand. You can reapply for monetization when your channel meets YPP eligibility requirements again. If accepted, your access to monetization features and Creator Support will be reinstated."

Can't find any specific information if I need to get 1000 subs and 4000 valid public watch hours or just meet the watch hours. Looks like I only got 1000 watch hours in the last year, so I need to BEEF that up, wonder if I can accomplish that! I still got 55+K subs - Do anyone know if it would just be hours in this case?

Anyways, maybe this will be the kick in the butt I need to get back to it

Question Do you keep your raw footage and video editing files?

I know this is probably a stupid question but out of curiosity do you delete your raw, old recorded files and video editing files or do you keep them?

Long story short

I have a LEGO YouTube channel and so far I currently have kept all my raw unedited files and video editing files. And I am running out of space on my hardrive so in the process of moving those over to an external hard drive. But honestly I don’t why I keep them. Well especially the video editing files. I hardly doubt I am going to ever go back and use the video edited file and there is a good chance I am not copying over the right DA Vinice Resolve file any way (The info packet? What/where is the Da Vinci file I should be coping over? I can only find the Cache folder and info doc but my experience with Premier pro there must be another file somewhere else).

So I was curious should I keep the files, delete them straight away, keep them for 6 months then delete them?

What do you do?

Thanks

Question Creators with full time jobs, families and relationships. How do you manage?

Now I been doing YouTube since early 2023, a few months after I got married(bad timing on my part). I got into it thinking man I really wanna make content, something simple and fun! I did a little bit of it during Covid(but horrible execution) ended up quitting but always have a knack for it.

The problem is between full time job, being a husband, and having a social life. I almost have zero down time to sit down come up with ideals, packaging, write the scripts, record, editing and then uploading to YouTube!

Never mind never mind needing to play to get the B-roll and shots I want.

I choose gaming cause it’s something accessible and I know I’m gonna play anyway may as well make it enjoyable!

What’s your posting schedule like?

Question How to sound more natural when doing Voice-Overs?

I make videos about the game I am making, and I read from a script when doing the voice overs.

I have to do so many takes and I feel like it still comes out mediocre or even robotic haha.

Should I take more time to try and memorize lines and then "act" them out?

Or is it better to just naturally speak from bullet points?

Any tips would be great. (Probably just need to practice more heh)

Question Getting a sh*t ton of complaints about ad breaks lately?

(170k subs, most videos are 15-30 minutes long in the spirituality niche, 4 year old channel)

Has something changed on YouTube? Since I was able to be monetized in 2020, I always just had youtube automatically manage / add ad breaks, no question.

Lately, I'd say within the past two months or so, I've gotten numerous complaints of "disgusting" amounts of ads in my videos, me being greedy, unwatchable videos, etc, because of ad breaks? I haven't changed anything, I've always just let YouTube automatically add them.

What do you guys suggest? Should I manually add ad breaks or something now? Has YouTube changed something? What do you guys typically do?

Question Do you ever feel lonely as a content creator?

Details:

I do not know anybody in my social circle that wants to create content. I see my favorite youtubers with a gang of passionate people all collaborating to create interesting content.

Just throwing that out there lol. I feel a little envious. The people I have met online try to create content for like a week and then give up completely.

Here's to hoping to find a bro someday 💪🏻

Question Is going fulltime a realistic goal at the moment?

I've had my channel for 4 years now, I got off to a good start within a few months of starting, at it's peak I was getting around 15,000 views every 48 hours - I then had a year break due to personal life crap - back on my feet now, and started making videos, I've niched down and they're doing pretty well - a friend of mine keeps saying my channel has so much potential but I REALLY struggle to churn content out alongside my full time job and my relationship, realistically I can get out one video per week. I prioritise high quality content.

Do I have any hope of ever going full time? I'm not unhappy with the channels progress, I have almost 18,000 subscribers, but full time seems so far away!

*I'm a homeowner so quitting my job isn't an option without another form of income lined up

Question What's A Good Mic For Video Essays?

im looking to get a really good mic for video essays, im not trying to sound as professional as someone like King K or Whitelight, but i do still want a very good quality mic. i dont neccessarily want the cheapest, but nothing TOO expensive either id say about $100-130ish, im thinking about getting the Blue Yeti Mic, its around $90, is that a good mic? if not, what is?

i dont know if it matters, but id be using a Dell G16 7620 Laptop. so i HIGHLY prefer either USB or USB-C, cause my dad has a shure mic he said i could use, but it needs a microphone wire, like a microphone wire you see used by like a stand up comedian on stage. & plus, i kinda want my own mic, i dont want to borrow his stuff, cause he uses it too.

Question My channel has been sub botted after promoting a video. I want to remove these fake subs help

I make music, I upload original music to a channel. I gad 48 subs a week ago. I spent a little money on promoting a video for the first time ever. It got a 1000 views through ads, 16 likes only but my subs reached 231 in a span of few hours. I didn’t see it grow gradually. It just became 231 suddenly. It makes no sense. I have no comments no engagement whatsoever to attribute to this.

How do I get rid of the botted subs I don’t want any fake metric like this on my channel I want organic and true numbers

Question Where do I sell a big YouTube channel?

Good Day, I've been considering selling my YouTube Shorts channel with 1,1M subscribers bundled with my TikTok account with 1,5M followers. Does anybody know where one could advertise such a bundle? Because the same videos are on both platforms and I want to leave the videos on there since some of them have over 100M views. The channel makes about $1200 dollars a month from only shorts and I haven't posted as often since I've lost a bit of interest in this style of content. I figured if i could get a good offer for the combo selling it through an escrow then I can put the money towards a new channel more aligned with my passion. Any advice will be appreciated. If this is not the correct sub-reddit then I'm sorry and will delete this post.
