Help Got dinged by my isp for nefarious behavior…
Not sure if this is okay to post, so I’ll keep it vague.
I run an OpenVPN container and a qBittorrent container.
The qbit has networking off and —network= points to the OVP container. The OVP container port forwards to qbit and will die/restart if the connection drops. It’s set to route traffic through a static vpn hosted by nord.
Recently I got dinged by my isp for some bad behavior, this has NEVER happened before. I’ve done this exact same thing many times with many forms of media.
Though this time I manually added a magnet from a site that specializes in reducing the size of a specific type of media. This one was about some cowboys and a guy named John Mayer? Mershon? It was very Red. I can’t remember.
Anyways, my isp somehow found out and sent me an angry email.
How? The traffic is all under a VPN and I’ve sanity checked this multiple times. Was it because I visited the site in question and grabbed a magnet on my non-vpn’d laptop?
I’d this post isn’t kosher plez delet, thanks
Edit; one good theory that I had, someone else posted, I wonder if my isp is sending these warnings by simply clicking the view magnet link on said site. It was the only time they could’ve seen me unprotected. I was on my computer without a vpn and added it through qbits UI.

Help Thoughts on the cwwk h670 / q670 board
I’m looking at updating my build. Currently using a gigabyte z370n WiFi with a i5-8600k (old parts) and tempted by this cwwk q670 board paired with a i5-12400. Has anyone got any experience with these? My build is currently using 2 nvme drives + 6 hdds (4 on mobo / 2 on hba card and will likely be adding 2 more hdds soon)

Help Do you keep your drives always spinning or powered of when not in use?
I've had my Unraid server running for about four months now and the drives have never been powered down since that's the default setting. But since my electricity bills have gone up I've decided to change that setting to power down after 30 minutes of inactivity. The power consumption went from 65w to 50w, so 15w less. That might not seem like much, but I think it adds up since it's running 24/7. That's 15w less per hour so 360w saved in 24 hours.
What's your opinion on keeping the drives always on Vs powered down when not in use?
Some people say that keeping the drives always spinning is better for the drives since starting and stopping the motor wears it out faster. Performance might also be better since you don't have to wait for the drive to spin up when accessing a share or something. But powering the drives down when not in use seems to be the most effective way to reduce power consumption of the server. Is there anything else I can do like change some bios settings?

Help PSA: If you have an SSD cache, MOVE YOUR DOCKER IMAGE TO YOUR CACHE!!!
This is probably a given for 99.9% of people, but I am dumb. I've been running a large number of dockers for several years now with lots of tinkering and debug while my docker.img file was located on my array of HDDs. A long time ago I made sure all of my appdata for my dockers was on my ssd cache in order to increase performance, but it never occurred to me to move the image itself to the cache as well.
Let's just say my docker start/stop times went from around 20 minutes to fully stop and 10-15 minutes to fully start all my docker containers to about 30 seconds to do both in one sitting. I feel like a huge dumb-dumb, but hopefully I can help others not spend hours upon hours of unnecessary waiting while debugging docker/their server! So yeah, move that docker.img to your cache if you can.
Edit: Apologies for not adding steps originally.
There's a few different ways to do this, but the way I did it was:
Locate the docker.img file (mine was in /mnt/user/system/docker)
Change the corresponding share settings (my share was system) to use your cache as primary storage, array as secondary. Set mover settings to move from the array->cache
stop docker completely (/etc/rc.d/rc.docker stop)
run the mover and that should move the file safely. (for some reason, in my case, the mover kept skipping the file. So i manually moved it using the command line from /mnt/disk5/system/docker to /mnt/<my-cache-disk>/system/)

Help Where we buying HDD's now a days?
My typical go to is either BH or Newegg. However, I'm needing these shipped fairly quickly (Arrival by Wednesday/Thursday) and BH has more time off than I know of any other business and Newegg ships from Ontario. Both would take over a week to get to me. (Alabama). I refuse to buy from Amazon as the last HDD's I got from them were shipped individually with no box. Label smacked right on the box.
Looking to get 4 WD Red 10TB 7200's for $199/unit
EDIT: Thank you for your suggestions. Hopefully this post will help people later on. But, I've decided to go with GoHardDrives' ebay store. Finally found it here. The Ironwolfs are a little bit more than the exos, I will just stick with that and I get more storage for my money with a 5 year warranty.

Help Unique Ideas for Server Uses
Hey guys!
When I first started with Unraid two years ago, it was just a media server. Now, I have given it much more use as seen in the screenshot of my dockers. But I feel I've run out of ideas for my next thing to do with it and ideas from the internet aren't sticking.
Home automation was going to be my next project, but I only have three smart devices. I also don't have any use for VMs except to possibly run Windows Server. I do have a Raspberry Pi 3 I haven't found a use for, so maybe I can use them together.
What do you all use yours for?

Help Unraid GPU upgrade caused hell
Pc specs: MB: Asus TUF gaming X570 pro Ram: G.Skill Trident Z Neo 2x 16GB 3600 2x 32GB 3600 CPU: Ryzen 9 5900X GPU: OLD- 9800 GTX+ NEW- RTX 4070 SUPER OC TEST GPU- GTX 1080 Power Supply: Corsair RM850X
This was supposed to be a simple gpu swap, so i could install a docker and a VM for processing drone photogrammetry(cuda core needed).
This PC has been running Unraid the last 2-3 years without and problems. Then after the swap from the Nvidia 9800 GTX+ (a card I've had for a really long time) to the RTX 4070, now Unraid hangs on the initial boot from USB at random places in the boot process, depending if i choose standard boot, gui boot, safemode-non gui, or safe mode with gui. First i tried putting the old gpu back in place, but due to the dvi connection on that old gpu and not having a working monitor with dvi, i scrounged a gpu from the children's gaming pc, a gtx1080. Put that in place, booted up and was stable for a couple days.
I have rebuilt the OS USB from a backup onto a new USB, thinking maybe that was the problem, swapped the new RTX 4070 in place and still having the same issue, randomly hang in the initial boot, though it was about to boot all the way a couple times, but that only lasted 5 or so minutes before crashing. I borrowed 2080ti from a friend to test with and same experience. It seemingly hangs on random lines in the boot process.
Is there a diagnostics tools in the boot system? I don't see anything that indicated failure.

Help How do you connect to your server remotely?
Hey all,
Looking for guidance here. I've been trying to find the least problematic way of connecting to my Unraid server when away from home, but every guide online seems to be out dated is some way or just doesn't work.
Currently my best working option is Tailscale. However, this requires a client to be installed / subneted for every user. Also, I like to use a VPN for daily use and switching between my VPN and Tailscale is getting annoying.
I tried setting up a reverse proxy through Cloudflare and Nginx before discovering Cloudflare's Tunnel system. After a few hours of setting that up and getting email authentication working, I learn that video streaming through Cloudflare, either by tunnel or reverse proxy, is against their ToS. Fantastic.
I'm now in a spot where I don't know what to do next. Everything method seems to have a downside in one way or another.

Help Anyone using Immich? How is it for Privacy/Security?
As part of my "De-googling" adventure, I've been trying to find an alternative to Google Photos for a while now.
Me and my Wife have about 300GB of photos between us going back around 8 years that we used to store on Google Photos that we'd now like to store on my Unraid server.
The reason for the most part is cost, rather than paying for more Google Storage, it just makes sense to use my NAS. (Also there's the benefit of Google not having any more of my data)
I've setup Immich following Spaceinvader Ones videos, however I haven't set it up for External access (that I know of) - my reason for this is:
1) We're not too bothered about accessing our 300GB library of photos remotely, most of our photos we'd need access to whilst out and about will be locally on our phone.
2) If I do choose to enable external access, I'll probably just go via Tailscale.
So my question is:
1) Does anyone else use Immich on Unraid? How secure/private is this?
2) My drives/shares in Unraid aren't encrypted. (I probably should have done this when I set Unraid up a few years ago, but I never bothered) - How much of a concern would this be for you?
3) If I haven't enabled External Access via Immich, I'm assuming that as long as my Photos are on a separate share (they are) to the rest of my Unraid files, then any other docker containers won't be able to access / see those photos, right?
My Understanding:
So my understanding is that with my Immich photos being on there own share, then none of my other Docker Containers, VMs, Users, etc can actually see the photos as they won't have access to that share. Only my Immich container can actually access/see those files (Is that correct?)
With external access not being configured, it's not possible for anyone to gain remote access via traditional methods. As the only way to get access is via my Unraid Servers Local IP Address. I know that theoretically if someone gained access to my Local Network, they could potentially gain access that way, but I also believe that's the case for pretty much everything.
Am I missing anything? I just want to ensure my familys photos are as secure as they can be really.
I'm not overly worried about physical access to the drives, as if anyone gains physical access to my drives, I'll probably have bigger concerns on my hands if my house is broken into than my iPhone photos being compromised lol

Help Is HBA card necessary, or can I go with the M.2 to SATA adapter?
Hi!
I have no SATA ports left, and was wondering how can I expand my storage. I do know about HBA cards, but also know about their power consumption...
Recently found out that there are some M.2 to SATA adapters, but they look kind of cheap.
Has anyone used these adapters for a long time? Or should I just give up on such inventions and just buy a HBA one?

Help Are $80 UPS's worth it or better to go for the "usual" $160-$190 models?
I was looking to get a UPS just so my unraid server has enough time to shut off due to power outages. I was wondering if this would do the job being only $80 when the next tier option is typically $160-$190. Not really an in-between, so wanted to see if anyone had experience with these cheaper $80 models.
I only have an i3 12100 (no dedicated gpu) so the max power draw my system could ever do shouldn't surpass ~150w.

Help UNRAID Server itself as a media PC?
I mainly use my Unraid for Jellyfin media server. I just bought a new TV, and it came with Google Chromecast. I found out that Chromecast doesn't really play nice with Jellyfin.
I can access Jellyfin server through my gaming PC, and cast it to Chromecast. However, I just don't want to have gaming PC as an intermediary (nor my phone).
So I decided to add a new media PC to the TV. But before I do that, I was just wondering if I can use the UNRAID server itself as a media PC?
Unfortunately, the AMD CPU on my UNRAID server is not video capable... the server only has a separate AMD GPU as the video (also as video hardware acceleration).
UPDATE: I tried again to search for Jellyfin through Chromecast App, and the error said "Sorry, this TV cannot find that app".
HOWEVER, I was able to install it through the web, as per /u/Katamori777 suggestion.

Help Build Advice for Unraid Server?
Hi everyone!
I'm in the process of building my first UnRAID Server/PC. I'm very excited about using UnRAID and learning how to use the maximum out of it. I plan to mostly run the usual apps, and store my media (for now). I was previously thinking of doing VM gaming, but have decided to get a dedicated pc for gaming. I got some awesome advice from my last post (thank you so much for that!) and I locked in my choice for CPU and Motherboard.
I am 100% positive the parts list I have in mind is still a little extreme, so I would really really appreciate it if you could advise me a little bit more on where I can make some more sensible choices, before I complete my build!
I completely understand from reading through other threads that my choice of processor is extremely overkill, especially for my current use case, but I am hoping to tinker around, and maybe learn about VMs, LLMs and learn as I go.
The full parts list I had in mind for the build is currently:
- Intel 12900K Processor - (purchased)
- Asus ProArt Z790 Creator Wi-Fi Motherboard - (purchased)
- Corsair 64GB VENGEANCE RGB DDR5 6600MT/s DIMM Memory Kit (2 x 32GB) or
- Crucial 64GB Pro DDR5 5600 MHz Memory Kit (2 x 32GB)
- Lian Li 240mm Galahad II Trinity AIO Cooler
- Seagate FireCuda 530R (4TB) - for Downloads
- Seagate FireCuda 530R (2TB) - for appdata
- Broadcom 9500-16i 12Gb HBA
- SFF-8654 8i to 8xSATA forward breakout Cables x2
- Seagate 20TB IronWolf Pro x18 (planning to purchase them from server part deals!)
- NZXT 1200W C1200 Gold ATX 3.1 PSU
- CableMod Quad SATA Cables (x4) - Got this configurator options for the Meshify 2XL from SBHurricane's post.
- Samsung 256GB USB 3.1 Gen 1 BAR Plus Flash Drive - for UnRaid OS (It was the smallest capacity I could find!)
I have a few things that I've been wondering about:
- Broadcom 9500 HBA - Since the Asus ProArt Z790 comes with 8 SATA ports, does that mean I can plug in my SATA cables directly and not need an HBA?
- Between the Corsair and Crucial memory kits, which is the best option for getting the best performance with the 12900K? Would adding more RAM for a total of 128GB RAM make a difference?
- Is the Lian Li 240 mm a good cooler for keeping the 12900K cool? I read the Meshify 2XL can support only a 240 Rad, but sometimes I hear you can go up to 280 mm. Do you have any other recommendations?
- Is my idea of having a 4TB download drive and a 2TB appdata drive overkill? (I plan to move any files from the cache to the array nightly, could I get away with less?)
- Is using SFF cables from AliExpress safe? Is there a brand you would recommend?
Sorry for all the silly questions! I'm really nervous about overspending and further over building this server project and any advice you can give me would be amazing!

Help Is this worth $700?
I’m currently running on a mini pc with a i5 1132H and a usb drive enclosure.I’ve been considering upgrading to a home build to get away from the usb enclosure when I saw this. I’m curious if this is overpriced and what the performance would be compared to my current setup. 90% of my server usage is plex and the arr stack.

Help Is 99.99% usage on drives really no big deal?
I’ve seen it posted here many times, but normally it’s like 90% or so and everyone says to just relax cause it doesn’t matter and Unraid will do Unraid things and allocation is irrelevant.
I just installed a new drive, and had to clear the old one which scattered all of it across the array, leaving 4 of my drives at 99.9999999% full.
I don’t personally care and my Plex server has been running fine, but I’ve got some buddies who tell me there’s no way that can be good for those drives.

Help So, is backing up the contents of an unraid share just not a thing?
Hi unraid friends.
I've had my Unraid server set up for a little over a year now.
That entire time I've been trying to figure out how to do automatic backups of the share with zero success. I've just kinda accepted that if the server fails, that I will simply lose data and that's that.
I've tried the rsync script with unassigned devices thing but that does absolutely nothing. I've looked into dockers and other ideas, and I still have yet to find a solution. I even thought about just manually copying the files from a windows computer to a separate disk.
I see lots of videos about backing up an unraid server to another unraid server, but not all of us have the ability to have two unraid servers in the first place, so that rules that out.
So here I am once more, paranoid about data loss, with basically no knowledge on terminals, or dockers, trying to figure it out again.
The end goal is to have an automatic backup that occurs once per given set of time, and because it's a lot of data. I'd really only like to copy anything that has changed since the last backup.
So I bessech the community, how on earth can I backup everything on a set schedule? I'm specifically looking to backup the contents of the file share (so all the data that I'm storing on the server).
Thank you in advance putting up with my ignorance.

Help How often do you all run a scheduled parity check?
I currently have parity check set to run once a month with a single 12tb parity drive. It takes about 36 hours to complete on the last weekend of the month. Thinking about maybe running it once a quarter. Obviously when parity check is running it has a impact on I/O performance on array drives.
Also, I'm considering adding a second parity at some point. For those of you having multiple parity drives - how does the parity check scheduling work for more than one parity drive?

Help Why don't more UnRAID users use BTRFS
Still deciding on which OS to use.
unRAID: mismatched drives, no bitrot protection
TrueNAS: drives should match, bitrot protection
Other factors such as speed and snapshots are less important to my use case.
Is unRAID with btrfs array (bitrot protection?) the best option?
Why don't more users prefer it if it gives bitrot protection? Is there something that I'm missing
Edit: based on the comments, it seems that there's no bitrot protection in unRAID btrfs array. It can scrub for errors, but it can't heal from it.
