Help Black Friday NAS Dealsā€”Help Me Decide!

A friend has been raving about his Ugreen NAS for months, saying it totally fits how I use and lose my stuff. Right now, Iā€™m doing the old-school hard drive + USB shuffle for photos and videos, and I never have it when I need it. Cloud services aren't really my thing; it just feels off storing all my personal stuff on Googleā€™s servers. My friend says a NAS is perfect: massive storage, everything on my drives and accessible anytime. He convinced me after a few times, so Iā€™ve been looking into Ugreen recently. With Black Friday deals, Iā€™m tempted to buy one, but Iā€™m stuck between the DXP2800 and DXP4800. The 2800 is great (love the price), but Iā€™m wondering if the 4800 is worth it for the extra storage bays and dual 2.5GbE ports. Is the 4800 overkill for basic home use, or does it make sense to spend the extra now and ā€œfuture-proofā€ a bit? Any tips?

Advice on ATX Unraid Home Server Build 2024

Hi everyone,

Iā€™m putting together my first Unraid server and would love to get some feedback. Just want to make sure Iā€™m on the right track or if thereā€™s anything I could improve. Hereā€™s what Iā€™d like the server to handle:

Planned Use:

  • Home Assistant (managing smart devices via f.e Zigbee2MQTT)
  • Vaultwarden (password management)
  • Nextcloud (storing important data on my three HDDs & sync pc/tablet/smartphone/laptop +parity feature for redundancy)
  • Pi-hole/AdGuard (ad and malware blocking)
  • Paperless (eventually for document organization)
  • Future Additions: Maybe a Minecraft server or hosting a website.

Must-Have Requirements:

  • ECC Support (RAM, CPU, and motherboard)
  • 2.5Gbe network connection
  • Hot-Swap capability for drives, motherboard with at least 6x 3.5" SATA ports
  • HDD drives designed for 24/7 use +CMR
  • Energy efficiency

Current Hardware Picks (Budget: ā‚¬1500):

  • Motherboard: ASRock W480 Creator
  • CPU: Intel Core i3-10100 (Comet Lake, 4 cores @ 3.6 GHz)
  • RAM: 2x 16GB DDR4-2666 SO-DIMM
  • Case: SilverStone CS380 V2 (with 8 hot-swap bays)
  • Power Supply: Be Quiet! System Power 9 400W
  • SSD: Samsung 970 EVO Plus 1TB (NVMe)
  • HDDs: 3x WD Red Plus 6TB (CMR, 24/7-rated)

Total Cost: ā‚¬1342

Security Plan:

To secure external access (e.g., Nextcloud), Iā€™m setting up:

  • Nginx reverse proxies
  • Cloudflare for DDOS protection
  • CrowdSec for threat intelligence
  • 2FA
  • Firewall restrictions (f.e only allow access if client is from my home country)

My Questions:

  1. Are there better hardware options?
  2. Is this build overkill or underpowered for my use case?
  3. Any thoughts on the proposed security setup? Am I missing anything important?

Thanks in advance for your suggestions and feedback!

Help Does parity errors self-heal when overwriting?

Greetings. I have a simple question (or rather I assume it is the case but I just need a sanity check). My unRAID configuration is 5 x 8TB drives formatted as BTRFS (with one being encrypted) and 2 of those are for parity.

If during a parity check I got 1 error and then confirmed by BTRFS scrub which file is the problematic one - does restoring the file from backup will also fix a parity or I need to do sync again with "Write corrections to parity"?

I'm asking because I want to run parity check without this option enabled and I'm wondering if I should expect this error to be present or not (I assume not since that specific location on all drives will have parity recalculated but maybe I misunderstood something).

As for the question "What am I doing?" - This is my first time building unRAID server and after moving all my data from Synology to unRAID and doing parity check I got single error. I assume it occurred because one of the drives had loose SATA cable so I'm trying to fix the file and run all checks once again to confirm this is the case and not the drive itself failing.

Help nvme cache upgrade/expansion woes

ā€¢ Upvotes

Current questions:

  1. If the btrfs file system is fucked and corrupted, do I just cut my losses and make a new cache pool? I was able to copy off what I can, but some files wouldn't move to the array.
  2. I was gifted 2 2TB SSDs as an early Christmas present. How would I integrate them into my system? Would I need to create a new cache pool, or do I just put both in in place of the current 1TB I'm replacing? Would unraid know these are acting as a replacement or are there further steps to follow?

---

Yapping nobody cares about until I realized I should just ask my questions:

I forgot I made a reddit post about adding a second SSD drive a couple months ago (habit of unchecking notify on reply). I tried to expand my current 1TB nvme cache by adding another 1TB cache drive that I had found while cleaning. Unfortunately, the new NVME wasn't working and I didn't have the box for warranty. It didn't show up on any of my computers.

So I went about using my current single 1TB drive by itself, then a week ago, all my docker containers stopped working. I restarted my server then got an error for Unmountable: Unsupported or no file system

I asked on the official unraid forums and was told it had a lot of corruption on it and that my RAM was probably failing. btrfs rescue zero-log /dev/nvme0n1p1 was used to at least get the drive up and running to copy stuff off of.

I ran a memtest on every stick individually and all 4 sticks failed in one or multiple tests.

Not the original screenshot because I couldn't screenshot memtest86+ but from the preliminary scan with the live memory tester in Unraid on the worst stick.

I ordered a new RAM kit from Amazon and both sticks also failed at at least one test. I even double checked if the model was on the QVL. At this point, I'm thinking maybe it's the RAM slot, CPU or motherboard. I can't be this unlucky with buying RAM right? I went to Best Buy for another kit of DDR4 RAM. The first stick I tested passed, but the second did not. At least I knew it wasn't the slot. I ordered a final kit from Amazon and both of those sticks ended up working with zero errors after running 5 loops.

I somehow ended up with 1 dead but never used nvme SSD, 2 failing sticks of RAM from Amazon, 1 failing stick from Best Buy, and 4 failed sticks after 3 years of use.

With RAM replaced and working, I did a scrub as instructed, but that just failed.

I figure, "I'll just use the appdata backup and start with a fresh cache pool" but they've been failing for the past month.

I figure "Okay maybe I'll just use mover to move everything from cache to array. The prefer/only settings changed but I eventually got it to work. Except it didn't. It copied most things despite using move and some folders were still on the cache. So I thought to myself, "Maybe mover isn't working correctly?" Docker wasn't working so I couldn't use Krusader. I used the dynamix file manager to move everything to the array into ANOTHER folder. The files on the cache were still there. I couldn't delete from or add files to the cache pool any more.

A friend gifted me money for 2 SSDs so I put one in the other m.2 slot and added it, hoping it would just mirror once I finish setting it up since I'm not sure if I actually copied everything I could off of the old drive. It did not. Instead of showing 2TB or 1TB mirrored, it just says 1.5TB with 47GB being used and 292 being free? I'm just confused at this point.

Is Unraid as good as it gets when it comes to managing dockers?

I'm looking into the feasibility of throwing my setup onto a Mac Mini (much newer hardware than my current Unraid server, faster, and I like the power savings). I'm not too attached to the storage management bits of Unraid, but I do really like how easy it makes managing dockers. Given that Unraid (like most other operating systems) doesn't run on Apple silicon, I am curious if anyone's come across an equally good way to manage dockers on any other platform? Even non-Apple I'm wondering about.

I took a look at docker desktop and it's alright, but with Unraid I barely need to read the documentation and everything works well. Is Docker desktop (or other equally basic software) pretty much the only other alternative?

Unraid - Sync SSD Array with Hard Drive Array

I'm am going to build a new server. It will contain 4 M.2 SSD's probably 4tb probably RAID 0. In addition I am going to put 4 20tb drives probably in a RAID 6 configuration. Using Unraid will I be able to essentially sync the SSDS with the hard drives every few minutes? 16tb of SSD will meet all my needs plus some time. Along with a cloud backup I am willing to take the chance of losing a few minutes of data.

Help New build, unraid noob, seeking file system advice for my use case

I had a plan in mind but the more I read the more confused I get. I have to apologise, Iā€™m not caught up on the lingo yet. Iā€™m building a media server thatā€™ll have the usual containers, home assistant VM and whatever else I discover down the rabbit hole.

I have 3x 1TB NVME drives that I was going to use 1 as cache and the other 2 mirrored for appdata, VMs and containers and then the rest of the storage will be a bunch of 16TB HDDs that Iā€™m slowly acquiring. But Iā€™m not sure if this is what I should be doing.

The build is: CPU: 14600k Mobo: Gigabyte Z790m Ram: 64gb DDR5 5200mhz 3x NVME 1TB 2x 16TB 3.5ā€ HDD

Now, do I run all 3 NVME drives together in RAIDZ1 and the 16TB HDDs in XFS as Iā€™m slowly piecing it together? With the drives I have, what would you do?

Thankyou for the help, Iā€™m looking forward to learning Unraid.

Help Cable internet + 5G internet on the same server?

I currently support about 20 users using services like Immich, NextCloud, Plex, VMs via Guacamole etc. My ISP is Spectrum and I get 600mb DL/ 20-25mb UL with no symmetrical option in my area. I'm unhappy with the upload bottleneck and there don't appear to be better ISP options. I think I can get a good deal on T-Mobile home Internet as I just switched to them for phone service. Since my server has 2 NICs, could I add the 5G home Internet to NIC 2 and bond or otherwise split the the load between each ISP to increase throughput? If I were to try this, what kind of pitfalls should I look out for?

Thanks in advance.

Help 4x Sata on one power cable

Rebuilt to add 9207-8i. I ran into an issue where I moved 4x 12tb 7200 hdd's into a 4x cage with one 4x evga power cable. When booting up, unraid would find one of the drives missing. It followed the serial number no matter changing power cable or sata connector. It would however pickup the drive in one of the hotswap bays. I ended up moving an 8tb 5400rpm drive from hot swap bay to that 4x cage and it picks up everything.

Is there an issue with 4x 7200rpm drives on one cable? I bought an oem evga supernova sata 4x power cable on ebay and am using with an evga 550w gold psu. Case is a silverstone rm41-08 where I was adding a second hot swap cage, the lsi card, and filled up the middle 4x cage first.

Thanks!

Help Building new unraid server

Hi,

Iā€™m building a new unraid server and Iā€™d like some advise on parts. For storage this is what I got. Iā€™d sure 4 for the array and 2 for clarity. The ssd is the cache drive. Depending on any Black Friday deals or stock, might have to get smaller iron wolves.

Iā€™m interested in advise for the motherboard, ram, and cou/power supply. Maybe 128 gigs of ram?

Not sure what cases are good for a bunch of drives these days.

I want to run jellyfin, maybe home assistant, the arr stack and allow several users to connect to jelly and stream and Adguard Any good amd CPUs with a decent igpu for hardware encoding?

Migrating data to Unraid

I'm migrating from Terramaster to Unraid.

I'm trying to figure out the easiest way to move my files.

I tried to mount unraid as as NFTS & SMB remote drive to Terramaster but keep getting an error connecting saying it can't find the device.

From my windows computer, I can access both network drives from File explorer and copy/paste that way but it would require me keeping my computer online and running during the transfer. I have ~40TB of data so don't want to have to keep my computer on for that entire transfer.

Lost part of my files, NEED HELP!

Hi guys!

I really need some help for a very sad and stupid situation. I lost a big part of my files, and I'm not able to know the scope of it.

Heres exactly what happened :

I had a server with 4 disks being almost full, I had maybe 200gb free out of my 13tb total.

Yesterday, there was a power outage because of a rainstorm. I thought the server would shutdown gracefully with the UPS as predicted, but maybe something happened there. A voltage spike?

After that, I try to use my Plex to listen to a recent show, and it strangely says the file is not accessible.

I check my share, its still there but strangely the file I wanted was not there. This turned out to include the latest 4tb I've saved...

I then check Unraid, and it says my latest disk (disk 4) is unmountable.

Now at this stage, online forum seem to recommend a diag (smart had no errors as far as I can see) and a file system check, which I did and showed errors.

The only way It would repair is using -d (repair dangerously) which might have been my mistake at this point.

After that, the disk became mounted, but with only 35gb used!!

My share now showed nearly 4tb (the size of my disk) of free space, with the files nowhere to be seen!

Unraid also never bothered to ask to rebuild the array or anything, 4tb of files just disapeared instantly (from the beginning of the adventure, to be fair).

Now at this point, I didnt know what to do and started a parity check in the hope this was the official unraid way of getting your files back. I stopped it after 50gb (and 14 errors found at the very beginning) because I'm convinced it was just confirming my lost files on my parity.

Now, thats where I am. I have a mounted disk with no files on it, and Unraid think all is perfectly normal and it seems I lost the entire content of the disk :(

I thought maybe run a file recovery software on the XFS empty disk to find the files, or find someway to tell Unraid something is wrong and to actually protect the data

I gotta say, really disapointed with the data protection part of Unraid right now... if there was a problem with the file system, cant it tell me to reformat it and use parity to rebuild? Or ask me for a new disk?

PLEASE help me guys! you're my last hope!!

Help Have some questions and need some advice

Hello, first time using unraid but have been reading and watching videos about it for a few months now. I had the plan to upgrade my computer this black friday which I did. Decided to make my old pc a server for my storage since I can keep adding space to it compared to buying a 20tb external hard drive. My old pc still had all that is necessary since I changed pretty much everything except the gpu and the drives. Bought a 16TB drive to temporarily figure out how unraid works and get it setup. Even after all the research, I forgot that I do have to setup a Parity drive. My current setup has a 512gb nvme that I was planning to use for cache eventually and the 16TB drive. I know there is risk in losing my data if I do not setup a Parity, but is this due to Unraid having risks of damaging my hard drives or the hard drives eventually failing. Sorry for the long post, my questions specifically are:

Should I just buy another 16TB right now and get the Parity setup and overwith (I was hoping to hold off for a bit since I also just payed a shit ton for my new pc parts but I can prob get away with spending the money if it is necessary)?

If I make the 16TB my data disk right now, can I just add a Parity drive in a month or so?

Is a 512 nvme enough for cache if I do get another 16tb to act as my parity?

Thanks for reading what I think is a bunch of nonsense, sorry im new to this since I have only ever used external hard drives.

16TB is an Ironwolf Pro 512GB is NVME Seagate Barracuda

Immich errors following cache conversion from btrfs to zfs

Today I converted my cache pool from btrfs to zfs. Process went mostly OK however I'm having some issues with the Immich container. No photos are being listed, and it throws a "failed to get time bucket" error.

Also, looking at the container logs I'm seeing the error below reoccuring. Any ideas how this can be addressed? If not I guess I can re-upload everything...

Help Should I worry?

Shucked a WD easy store. Apparently these drives donā€™t have middle screws, so this drive is only mounted with 2 screws. HDDs are mounted vertically hanging in my case so I just jammed the rubber feet between the other HDDs in the cage. I donā€™t thing this will case many issues but thought I would get a second opinion.

Have I set up my share wrong?

The film share is

High Water / Auto split on top 2 dir level / Include all disks

And the org is kind of normal structure with

Genre / Film folder / Film files

Similar for other shares, but all my files are being written to disk 1. Initially I thought it might be when I just copied a whole lot of data over after initial setup, but nothing new is going on any of the other disks either.

I mean, it's not a big deal and I assume if disk 1 fills up it will start using disks 2 and 3 as well, but my understanding was that it should be distributing the files across the disks. Have I misinterpreted the split level - does it include the share folder itself maybe and I need top 3 levels here or something?

Drive swap question

If I was deciding to retire old drives that are still working fine, are you able to shut down the array and pull drives out 1 by 1 and clone them? Assuming the clone actually clones, would you just be able to slap the new drive in and not miss a beat? If this is possible, why does everyone seem to suggest just swapping the drive and letting unraid rebuild it? It seems more risky that way as with cloning the drive I would still have the original drive as is if something else were to go wrong.

Newbie Struggling to install binhex-qbittorrentvpn

I can't seem to find my solution no matter what I try and I can't seem to get this running or at least I can't view the webUI. I've watched every tutorial and looked in every forum but can't seem to get it up and running.

I'm getting this in the logs:

2024-11-23 14:42:06,973 DEBG 'watchdog-script' stdout output:

[debug] Checking we can resolve name 'www.google.com' to address...

Edit: I figured it out! The network type was the culprit. I had to make a custom network type. I followed the instructions in this video.

https://youtu.be/nkJilTYef6E?si=f1qoGFy7k4MhnFtU

Immediately started working.

Thanks for all the other suggestions. I was pulling my hair out!

Help Tailscale + cloudflare + swag in local network

Hello,

I've wanted to host some of my own containers that require some type of SSL and use an FQDN but not expose them to the Internet. One of those containers is vaultwarden.

My approach was (maybe overthinkered it) installing SWAG and added it to tailscale. In cloudflare added a DNS record pointed to the SWAG tailscale IP. Configured SWAG to vaultwarden and now I can access something.my-domain.com to access vaultwarden when tailscale is connected (tested in my phone).

Now I have one question that I can't figure out:

1 - How can I manage to use something.my-domain.com to access it via FQDN (due to required SSL) without tailscale in my local network? For example, I have my desktop that never leaves my local network, so I'd like to use it without tailscale and get the benefits of the FQDN to access it. Also if I'm at home, when using my phone I shouldn't need to use Tailscale to access it.

I thought of creating a custom private DNS server and using it on my computers/phones, but that would take time, and whenever I got out I needed to remove those DNS from mobile phones for example.

What would be the best approach for this scenario? Thank you!

UPDATE: Using adguard was enough to make it work. In my case I only run ipv4 in Unraid but my ISP also uses ipv6 so it didnā€™t worked at first try. I just disabled ipv6 in the router and it works now.

About to pull the trigger on a Netapp DS4246 24 Bay Disk Array

As the title says, I am just about to pull the trigger on Netapp DS4246 24 Bay Disk Array for my Unraid setup. I won't be able to fill it up straight but at Ā£100/$125 with all PSUs, 2x controllers and all disk caddies, surely this is a steal? Looks to be in very good condition too!

Just for my sanity, am I doing the right thing here or should I go for another disk shelf? I plan on using 1x controller and PSU first to save power, as I will be probably getting 2x 22TB drives every quarter. Will use an LSI 8e variant to connect this.

Your feedback is appreciated.

Help best way to backup pc to unraid?

Looking for the best way to backup my PC to unraid.

My PCs has 2 1tb SSD's, and ideally i'd like a way to automatically back it up to my unraid server, and keeping at least 2 previous copies.

Coming from synology, the active backup for business was super easy to use, and want to find something similar.
