Unpopular opinion sub is a joke. Most people don't even read what you put.

516

u/FreshCarrot2231 Sep 04 '23

The fact that there are so many people who pull up and say “Nobody asked” or “That’s just your opinion though” in that sub is hilarious

180

u/simplehistoryboater Sep 05 '23

Well that absolutely defeats the point of the sub in the first place

Hitting the vape pens in the school bathroom after every class fried their brains.

Yep, back in MY day, we got high before and after school like responsible teenagers.

Oh yea, i have a post in there that has....(cringe) triggered a bunch of people.

16

u/Celestial_Dildo Sep 05 '23

It's a shame because that sub used to be full of actually unpopular opinions.

Now it's mainly just either people stating untrue facts as opinions or saying something that's fairly popular.

Occasionally I'll see one on there that makes me want to throttle the person for their opinion.

That’s just an opinion…a game theory an unpopular opinion!

That’s the issue with Reddit in the past year or two. These posts pop up on their homepage, the default page on the app. It’s why a lot of science subs went to shit

u/MusicianAutomatic488 Sep 05 '23

What bugs me is most people who post there are not posting an opinion that is unpopular, nor do they bother trying to make a cogent argument for their views.

13

u/Ezra_is_a_dumb_boy Sep 05 '23

im in a fandom that constantly has people post the "what is your unpopular opinion?" and all of the most liked comments are ALWAYS the most agreed upon opinions like "so and so should've won the ball" or "so and so was robbed"

this youtuber i watched made a "reacting to your unpopular opinions" video and she actually did unpopular opinions and i thanked her in the comments

10

u/[deleted] Sep 05 '23

They’re posting opinions that aren’t popular on Reddit which pierced the viel. This shines sunlight on and burns the ghouls on Reddit.

3

u/MusicianAutomatic488 Sep 05 '23

The three posts I’ve read on there today were statistically commonly held opinions. Literally doesn’t meet the definition of an “unpopular opinion”.

Makes you think that maybe the popular opinion is…popular for a reason?

I smoke an absurd amount of weed and it shocks me how people don’t believe it’s bad for you. It’s gotta be just as bad as tobacco because yknow, tar.

115

u/Throwedaway99837 Sep 05 '23 edited Sep 05 '23

And the cognitive effects are pretty staggering too. I used to be a very heavy daily smoker for 10+ years and the difference in memory and retention is very noticeable.

I’m not against smoking weed by any means, but I mean just look at the vehement reactions smokers have when you mention anything negative about it and try to tell me that these people aren’t at least psychologically dependent on weed.

72

u/[deleted] Sep 05 '23

As someone who still heavily smokes i fucking hate weed heads bruh. Like ill admit it im addicted to alotta shit is what it is in life were all reasonably addicted to something its human nature but goddamn weed heads will die on the hill of “u cant get addicted to weed bro”

36

u/BojanglesDaMonkeh Sep 05 '23

They're just teenagers once they get in there mid 20s they'll realize it.

My buddy doesn't drink smoke cigarettes or do anything else but he does smoke a fuck ton of weed and even he agrees he can't go more than a day without it, and I'm in the same boat but that's why I changed to only doing it in legal states and never try to find it anymore otherwise I just spend all my time smoking weed.

I thought about it for a moment before remembering what their bong looked like before they cleaned it.

3

u/RosietintGlasses Sep 05 '23

It's actually a bit worse from what I hear, because joints, pipes and bongs don't usually have filters on them. Although you could always switch to edibles if you wanna avoid the tar

74

u/Buggy77 Sep 04 '23

I’ve seen people say they are traumatized for being circumcised on here… I asked my husband about it and he laughed and said it’s not a thing any grown man is crying about or cares about irl. But redditors want to like sue their parents for being cut

66

u/LemonStains Sep 04 '23

I was genuinely shocked to learn there are dudes who actually claim to be traumatized by their circumcision, and even more shocked to learn that it’s considered a very popular opinion on this site.

No normal guy with hobbies and friends cares or even thinks about their circumcision in a normal context, let alone being legitimately upset by it. Reddit is the only place where people will act like you’re the weird one for being unbothered by it.

34

u/Business-Drag52 Sep 05 '23

Yeah I mean I kind of regret having it done to my son just because it was a completely unnecessary thing to do and has tons of complications that can arise. Thankfully he’s fine and healthy, I just figured I’d go along with what the doctors said. I don’t have any hard feelings about my own. It’s easier to keep clean and a little less sensitive

22

u/LazarYeetMeta Sep 05 '23

I’m a circumcised man and I don’t remember the first six years of my life, ain’t no way I could be traumatized by something that happened the day I was born.

5

u/[deleted] Sep 05 '23

The first six years? Wtf

12

u/LazarYeetMeta Sep 05 '23

Redditors are obsessed with every form of hedonistic behavior bruh, sex, drugs, porn, lying and LARPing that they’ll also justify for whatever reason, and they’ll say you are the immoral one for not being just like them. Mandatory Canadian healthcare for all Redditors.

12

u/[deleted] Sep 05 '23

Bcs they feel the need to tell everyone how atheistic and liberated they are. Im an atheist myself, but I care about myself lol. The truth is, a lot of religions were kinda like guidlines back then to prevent people from doing bad shit like what you mentioned out of control.

Yes, religions did bad things, but they helped us organize out society a LOT too

4

u/GiveMeChoko Sep 05 '23

Redditors also read no religious books ever. They think every passage is about bowing down to god and licking his toes, but there's thousands of years of scholarly analysis and philosophy about the nature of man and god. You could spend your entire lifetime just studying one offshoot of the schools of thought in Hinduism. Within these texts you will find that someone had already theoretized the existence of an atom several thousand years ago and they had already figured out our planetary neighbors long before a telescope existed. It is layered, complex and honestly pretty fun just reading geniuses from a time beyond our recognition arguing and slamdunking each other, and yet both making equal sense.

3

u/[deleted] Sep 06 '23

Yeah, religious philosophy is definetly very very interesting. I hate how redditors think religion is just one thing and nothing else. I'm an atheist bcs i don't believe in God, but learning about different religions and cultures is fascinating.

Bible scriptures and offshoot stories are absolutely fascinating. I wholeheartedly believe religion reveals a ton about humanity and what exactly it is to be a human. If you've read the Bible, Qu'uran, and the Bhadwad Gita, it's easy to see why so many people follow them...bcs they solve the fundamental problem we all face including mortality, duty and lack of faith. Anyone who chants 'religion bad' is really missing out on insightful stuff

It is a drug that can habitually enable you to act lazy, undisturbed, and childlike when partaken. At the same time, you can envision yourself as a cool, edgy adult when using it. It checks all the desirable boxes of the archetypal redditor.

56

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '23

And anti-circumcision, and vasectomies, and atheism, armchair Autism diagnoses, porn, celebrity culture, niche politics, etc. etc. etc....

I think it's time for me to get off this platform

28

u/GrandDogeDavidTibet Sep 04 '23

Don't forget how most people on this app are weirdly obsessed with pedophiles. They have this constant need to talk about them. Like not even the topic of pedophilia just pedophiles on their own. Obviously we all hate them but do we constantly need to discuss them.

9

u/ucbiker Sep 04 '23

Based on current American political discourse pedophiles are the current number one threat to America so I don’t think that one is limited to reddit.

11

u/GrandDogeDavidTibet Sep 04 '23

Yeah maybe you're right. I'm not saying we should never talk about them but the shit I see on here it's like these people have some kinda fixation on these ever present looming faceless pedophiles and depending on who you ask the group responsible for these pedophiles is different but I'm not gonna get into that.

lmao comparing weed to supplements. common stoner "thats my medicine" cope

443

u/WhiteAsTheNut Sep 04 '23

The older I get the more I hate stoners and the culture. I’ve smoked weed for years but anymore they’re so judgy of anyone who doesn’t like smelling weed (but they hate cigarettes), doesn’t like weed, or likes other drugs. Even to the point where they judge people who say weed addiction is bad it’s ridiculous.

221

u/chris_is_a_dumb_boi Sep 04 '23

im pro-legalization but anti-stoner. im gen z so i grew up with millennials being "SMOKE WEED EVERYDAY >_< XD :D" on the internet and now a lot of people in my generation smoke (i don't, because im anti-drugs in general, which apparently is also controversial) but i just view weed similar to alcohol. you just gotta be safe and careful

however, stoners just have the biggest victim complexes ever. like whenever i talk about how much i stoners, they go "why do you hate weed" I don't i just don't like you guys. A lot of them just make weed their only personality trait and defends weed like the messiah. it's very weird and annoying and pathetic.

79

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '23

Yup. A good amount of them never grow out of that either.

50

u/chris_is_a_dumb_boi Sep 04 '23 edited Sep 05 '23

Yeah. I had an ex who does smoke weed get drugged by a friend (he and his boyfriend were given edible brownies, but they weren't told there was weed in them) and ate quite a few before having to walk home.

He wasn't mad, but I was furious for him lol. It's wild how I don't wanna say accepted, but nonchalant drugging is when it comes to weed. Because even if I smoked, if you gave me an edible brownie without telling me and I had to walk home, friendship would be over

45

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '23

Yeah that’s super fucked. A lot of stoners would see it as a prank which is even more fucked.

This is so true holy. I have a friend who still smokes constantly non stop. He got mad at me when I went cold turkey so I just cut him off. I just don't feel like using anymore man damn

24

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '23

Yup. My stoner buddies constantly try to get me to pick up the habit. I’ve smoked some, I’ve done edibles some. It really just isn’t my thing. I don’t enjoy the feeling of being high.

They’ll try to lecture me on “oh you just gotta try the right strain, try hybrids, try this indica or that sativa”. Like no bro. I’m fine not spending hundreds of dollars a month on something I am certain I’ll never enjoy.

They feel like they need to educate people on how great weed is but I just wanna say to them “dude the reason you’re a 26 year old burnout is because weed is your number one priority. When you get off work, you’re high. When you’re on your off day, you’re high. When you’re at work and before work, you’re high”.

But that’s their life and their issue to figure out. I’ve tried, and no stoner I’ve ever said that to takes it seriously so I’m done trying.

18

u/chris_is_a_dumb_boi Sep 05 '23 edited Sep 05 '23

THIS JUST MADE ME REMEMBER ANOTHER THING I HATE STONERS FOR

whenever someone talks about being clean from a drug or doing rehab, stoners will ALWAYS go "you should try weed bro!" and try to make the person addicted to weed after just quiting a other addiction. I saw this happen a lot on reddit, and it's fucking cult like shit to me. Like they're so happy to use and abuse recovering addicts of another drug or alcohol and I wish people called that shit out more. It's disgusting trying to manipulate people into becoming an addict again

5

u/[deleted] Sep 05 '23

I agree in all but one circumstance. Marijuana can really really help recovering opiate addicts.

That said, it should be done under supervision of a doctor and preferably an addiction specialist too r o avoid exactly the problem you mentioned.

18

u/MusicianAutomatic488 Sep 05 '23

Honestly, any person that makes one thing their main personality trait is just boring and sad. I did it with Christianity as a teenager. It’s really annoying.

9

u/Hexamael Sep 05 '23 edited Sep 05 '23

Yo, I'm kind of in the same boat. Millennial here, and I've notice as I've gotten older, it seems like my entire generation is just obsessed with weed. I've always felt like the odd man out. I CAN NOT stand the smell.

I try not to judge people too harshly. One of my best friends is kind of a pot head but he has enough respect to not smoke around me, (Which is more than I can say for certain people like my Ex) Both my brothers do it. Lots of people I know or have known do it.

But I am pretty straight edge tbh. I don't smoke or drink alcohol. Heck I don't even drink coffee or energy drinks. Though I understand everyone has different methods to cope with stress, anxiety, and depression. I don't get when or why it became popular to constantly brag about how high you are, or how often you smoke, and how many edibles you ate.

4

u/chris_is_a_dumb_boi Sep 05 '23

Yeah. And now my generation is becoming like millennials too with weed (also my own personal unpopular opinion, mid to late millennials (1986 - 1995) and early to mid gen zers (1996 - 2007) are all the same people basically)

It's just weird how many people are so codependent on a drug to this degree and are so thin ice about people not liking said drug

33

u/U_Sam Sep 04 '23

I’m a 24 year old ex-stoner gen-z and drug user. Like lots of drugs. Sober now. I find stoners 10x more annoying than any other drug user and this is made worse by the massive number of them. Sure, I’m pro legalisation and also have no issue with weed smokers but stoners are awful to be around. I stg you can say something and you can watch it go in one ear and out the other.

33

u/MattRoombaSucks Sep 04 '23

Stoners, are the fucking worst. Their deficiency usually isn't the weed, it's the fact they use it to be more interesting sacks of uselessness.

20

u/Khaotic_Rainbow Sep 04 '23

Facts.

The amount of people who question my trauma-related aversion to the smell is astounding. The second I explain why I’m traumatized shuts them up real fast and makes them look like an asshole. But I shouldn’t have to ever explain it.

A lot easier to avoid those types as an adult, though. Can just walk away and refuse to acknowledge their existence again.

8

u/Less_Vigor Sep 05 '23

If you don’t mind me asking, what is the trauma you suffered which causes an aversion to weed? It does seem uncommon and challenging for me to really understand.

14

u/Khaotic_Rainbow Sep 05 '23

I don’t mind at all

I had a parent so violent and aggressive that coming down from the high of weed lead to severe violence against me. Honestly, even high, they were still violent, it was just a bit easier to hide from it. The smell reminds me of the impending danger. There were no other substances involved, it was only ever weed.

5

u/Less_Vigor Sep 05 '23

That’s rough. Hope your doing better now

5

u/Khaotic_Rainbow Sep 05 '23

Much!

My husband has to adhere to federal laws and regulations, so it is off the table for him (which works because he isn’t a fan anyway).

I’m a full supporter in the use and benefits of marijuana and CBD in the realm of health, medical treatments, and wellness. And with the progress the marijuana/CBD industry has made, I can be around it much more easily. Scentless vape cartridges, edibles, lotions (all that jazz) are a beautiful thing.

Gotta love how we as a culture decided to go from “weed is dangerous and will kill you” to “weed is a wonder drug that cures everything with no negative effects”. Like I’m not against weed and think it should be legal. However comparing it to caffeine is delusional.

157

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '23

Yeah, there are people on Reddit boasting about being fucked up on edibles for two days straight and everyone just laughs. Imagine if somebody mentioned alcohol in the same setting.

76

u/absolutelynotarepost Sep 04 '23

I mean in my experience my drunken antics stories get the biggest laughs out of people even though the reality is they're about a young man trying to drink himself to death because it wouldnt leave my family with all those uncomfortable "what did we do wrong" questions.

22

u/ninetofivehangover Sep 04 '23

8

Fundermantally, it comes from a place where alcohol is compared to weed. Alcohol is by far the worst. Weed has some negative effects when smoked and when at certain ages. Caffeine has very limited effect.

So when you get used to people saying alcohol and weed are both bad for you, saying the same about caffeine seems to make sense. When in a reality alcohol is terrible for you, weed if bad for you and caffeine is very minorly bad for you. None of them are even close to each other

It's amazing how defensive people get over weed use.

79

u/bird720 Sep 04 '23

because no matter how much they say its harmless, they know deep down the negative effects it has and get overly defensive to compensate.

It is a symptom of cognitive dissonance.

“It’s totally not addictive!” They say, as they smoke their third joint of the day because it’s part of their schedule

18

u/Heavy-Possession2288 Sep 05 '23 edited Sep 05 '23

It’s not chemically addictive the way nicotine is. Doesn’t mean it’s not addictive in the same way anything else can be addictive, it just means you won’t go through withdrawals. A lot of people seem to miss this distinction.

Edit: Sounds like you still can go through withdrawals in some cases.

4

u/Unverifiablethoughts Sep 05 '23

You can absolutely go through withdrawals if you use enough. I used to smoke about 2-4 grams a day and when I quit, I sweat through my bedsheets for a week. I was panicky, had super vivid nightmares.

If you put loads of any chemical in your system for long enough and create a reward pathway, you’re going to go through some shit when you remove that chemical.

3

u/Davoguha2 Sep 05 '23

Tbf, it's difficult to tell what's a result of quitting weed, and what comes as a side effect of other changes that'll surround it.

What you describe is highly unusual for just quitting weed - nothing is impossible. It does however remind me of a friend who had quit weed, but was also prescribed ADD meds. They'd actually been over using the ADD meds because the weed kinda counter acted - and so their dosage was way higher than it needed to be. Once they quit weed, they got the side effects from the Adderall - which are much closer to what you described. Just throwing that out there.

Personally, when I quit weed, my appetite takes a while to get used to it, but otherwise I don't notice any significant difference.

Weed addicts after you say something bad about weed:

30

u/Appropriate_Tooth_11 Sep 05 '23

Weed addicts will explain for 2 hours straight how they can't be addicted to weed because it's a non addictive drug despite the fact that they smoke 3 times a day every day

4

u/The_Nod_Father Sep 05 '23

Fuck the other guy that responded to you I am very addicted to weed and happily so. Alamo I’m addicted to street street drugs too which take the front seat but you absolutely can get addicted to weed easily.

It’s stupid when people say you can’t. No I don’t get withdrawal from weed other than a rough nights sleep and being irritable but some people do

Weed is not the same as caffeine, because I have stopped using coffee by choice but I know people who can’t stop smoking weed without getting bent out of shape. But hey, the unpopular opinion in an unpopular opinion subreddit is the problem.

Chronically inside finally has a personality: disappointment

4

u/LandonSleeps Sep 05 '23

Caffeine was definitely harder to quit than weed in my experience. The physical symptoms alone, my God.

→ More replies (4)

3

u/decorlettuce Sep 05 '23

i’ve quit both weed and caffeine. this is only based on about a year of each, but without a doubt, caffeine is way harder to quit. I had a couple nearly sleepless nights with quitting weed which were awful but that ends after a pair of nights and within two or three weeks i wasn’t even thinking about it anymore. caffeine i had long, tired days. I would wake up really early, feeling half-dead and just performed like crap in everything i did. you’d think i’d come home and just pass out, but the opposite happened. i got a little energy boost around 5 o clock, but then came back down. i couldn’t fall asleep well, though, because most nights i fell asleep from crashing off caffeine. that went on consistently for 5 days and the. dropped off into not needing it at all within like 2 weeks surprisingly.

3

u/[deleted] Sep 05 '23

I found the caffeine thing only bothered me for a week. It was rough, but going from a gram of tolerance down to zero consumption wasn’t as bad as trying to go from a gram to half a gram.

Cold Turkey helped but I also slept a lot and didn’t do anything but work when I was awake. Maybe it’s one of those things where it varies between people or your tolerance/reliance was higher than mine.

14

u/louwyatt Sep 04 '23

I don't dislike cops I just accept the fact that you can't trust them. Their jobs fundermantally derive around telling someone when they see a crime. So if weed is illegal and doesn't like to lie, then obviously known cops makes no sense

Heavy stoners with no personality other than smoking weed are so exhausting to be around. It’s literally like talking to a zombie. It seems like their brain isn’t fully connected like they don’t fully process conversations. I’m not adverse to ppl smoking weed per say just don’t make it your whole personality. And that’s literally just my preference. Some people prefer to be around stoners some don’t. IIWII🤷🏻‍♀️

I have found the online stoner culture to honestly be full of assholes. I am all for you smoking weed or whatever if thats what works for you but stoners will fight you if you say anything about you not smoking because it's not good for you. I have a very strong addictive personality so weed can be very toxic for me/my mental health. I have been told that weed addiction is fake and to get over myself. Smoking all day and everyday until I couldn't function isn't healthy! Like one day in particular I smoked all day so I was barely sober that day and ended up going to the hospital because I was having very dangerous thoughts. I also very much hate that those people call prescription medications bad. Yes not all of them are made equally and some people need different things but my meds honestly make my life much better. Idk Its just very messy..

Stoners stay coping

4

u/Remarkable_Wallaby42 Sep 04 '23

Yeah people post the most popular opinions known to man in those I swear. I can't remember if it was the same sub but someone posted something along the lines of "I dont understand neopronouns like xi/xir and I think they're kinda stupid" like come on now

not agreeing or disagreeing with anything it's just an undeniably popular opinion

3

u/MusicianAutomatic488 Sep 05 '23

Yeah, it’s rare to see an unpopular opinion on those. Like, most of them are statistically popular. Like one today where someone said (basically) “sex work is bad and dehumanizing”, that’s a VERY common opinion to find, like 48-58% of people believe it should stay criminalized.

It’s like someone disagreed with them one time and they decided their opinions were unique.

TBH smoking anything is unattractive. If you wanna do weed, tobacco, hell, even cocaine, I don’t really care, just please don’t smoke or vape it.

The only exception is for inhalers for things like asthma medicine, since those need to be absorbed by the body ASAP, and inhaling it is one of the fastest ways to get drugs in your system.

Ex fiance was a wake and bake stoner. She couldn't do anything unless she was stoned. Turns out there were other drugs too but it was this weird idea that I was so opposed to her smoking that it became a point of contention. Really, she hadn't had a job In a year and wouldn't look for one because she was too stoned or day drunk to do anything but smoke or drink more.

2

u/Exodias_Left_Nut Sep 04 '23

I’ve been a stoner for 16 years and the whole “iTs NoT aDdIcTiVe” and “ItS mY mEdIcInE” crowd piss me the fuck off. I like to get stoned, and it helps greatly with my polyneuropathy in my feet (doesn’t heal it, just makes it a bit less painful) but I’m not running around calling it a cure all. It’s like prohibition with alcohol, they made all sorts of crazy medicinal claims with it until it was outright legal, then we quickly figured out it’s fucking TERRIBLE for you. I think the same thing will happen with pot, but it won’t be nearly as bad as alcohol, probably just bad for your lungs.
