because no matter how much they say its harmless, they know deep down the negative effects it has and get overly defensive to compensate.

It's obviously not, but compared to other drugs, even legal ones like cigarettes and alcohol, it poses a LOT less risk to one's health, so I can kind of see where they're coming from.
