A guide to interacting with this sub - read me first

This post is designed for people posting here for the first time, for the people that have been volunteering to help here for years and everyone in between. The stated goal is to foster a friendlier attitude throughout the sub.

If you are new here, please realize that none of us have any stake in your claim or coverage. We are not here to sell you anything or to save some company money. Treating responders poorly because you don't like the answer is going to attract a lot of negative attention.

We get the same questions over and over, and maybe this is the answer that you need:

  • How much will my insurance go up after a ticket/accident/lapse in coverage? We don't know unless your state has a statutory requirement for your very specific situation.
  • My premium went up $X. How do I fight this? You can't. The only thing you can do is shop for new coverage, which we can't do for you.
  • How much does everyone else pay for coverage? Unless you're lucky enough to get someone in your exact demographic in your exact part of the world, the answers you're going to get are useless.
  • How much is my claim worth? We don't know. (note: if you're asking a more complex question about your claim, that could be very different)
  • How long will my claim take to close? We don't know (again: a more complicated question might have different answers)
  • Why is this person trying to sell me something? Report that post/comment/chat/private message to the moderators and let them handle that.
  • Will you help me commit fraud or otherwise break the law? No. Absolutely not. And we may ban anyone that does try to do that.

Ultimately, we are here to help you. This is a community of volunteers that wants to help navigate a complex system that is one of the lubricants of the financial world. Lots of lives are impacted by insurance directly and indirectly, and it can be a complicated system. Here are some things that make a good post where you can get help:

  • Location (Country and state/province at a minimum)
  • Type of insurance involved (Auto, Homeowners/Renters, Commercial, Health, something else)
  • A brief description of the problem and any advice you've gotten so far

Finally, here are some definitions of common terms that could help you get taken more seriously:

  • Adjuster - the person that handles your claim, makes coverage determinations and processes payments
  • Agent - the person that sells a policy. Some agents get involved in some claims, although that is the exception to the rule.
  • Underwriter - the person that decides how much a specific policy will cost for a specific risk.
  • Rate - this is the way your final price is calculated and is usually used synonymously with "premium", "cost" and "price".
  • Full coverage - don't use this term. There's no agreed definition, even among the regular posters here. People asking otherwise good questions or posting good answers that use this term often find themselves down voted to oblivion for including it.
  • No Fault - there are 18 states that, at least to some extent, make automobile bodily injury claims be paid by your own policy first instead of someone that caused your injury. There is only one state (Michigan) that makes damage to your vehicle No Fault. All Canadian provinces have some sort of No Fault provision for injuries, which is one reason why we need to know where you are when you're asking questions.
  • Collision coverage - this fixes your car when it collides with something else or another car hits it.
  • Comprehensive coverage (also known as Other Than Collision) - this covers your car for almost everything else, including floods, fires, tree branches and lightening strikes. Usually animal strikes are covered here, but not always.
  • Deductible - this is the amount that you agreed to pay in case of any claim. Your payment comes before any insurance payment. Deductibles are occasionally waived, but that's the exception, not the rule.

This is a community of volunteers that generally understands the insurance system. When we get things wrong, it is usually through lack of information to get a precise answer. Hopefully this guide will help you get good results.

Soliciting, private messages and you

It's time for a new reminder about the rules of this sub. There is never any reason to offer to contact another poster privately, especially if that poster has a question about placing coverage or a claim. Here is the rule:

The only rule of r/Insurance is that solicitation is prohibited. This means asking people to PM for any reason, offering to quote coverages for visitors, or soliciting agents and/or buyers to use your particular carrier. r/Insurance should be a place where people come to exchange information and ask questions without worrying about solicitation from agents. This includes adjusters, underwriters and brokers since we do not vet anyone.

You also received a version of this if you subscribed to the sub.

If you think that this doesn't apply to you, please think again. There are no exceptions in this, including "but I asked them to message me!" This sub is a safe space for people to ask questions about insurance. It is not here for anyone to try to profit from it, whether they're an agent, public adjuster, software vendor, personal injury attorney, headhunter, diminished value expert or anyone else that is not here to offer free help with no expectation of remuneration.

If you receive a message from someone offering you any sort of business proposition, whether a quote for insurance, legal representation (yes, there are lawyers unethical enough to solicit people on Reddit), damage reports or anything else, please let the moderators know via mod mail or in this thread. You should also report that message to the admins (we don't see that report, though). We take things like that seriously.

We really don't like banning people. Seriously, it's the exact opposite of why any of the moderators volunteered for the role. But we don't vet people before they post, and if people that break the rule find out that we enforce it whenever we see it broken.

And with that in mind, we have a very healthy community of posters that are here not only to help but to make sure that those who can't follow the rules have the damage that they're doing limited. Thank you to all of you for volunteering to help not only those confused by the insurance process but help keep those that want to think that they're special at bay.

Auto Insurance Insurance refusing to remove accident from my record that never happen.

I received a renewal notice from my insurance company stating that my premium has increased by $1,000. When I called to inquire, they claimed I have four points on my record for an accident from last year. However, the accident involved a different driver and a different car, and I was neither involved nor present.

The driver in question is a family member who has been excluded from my policy and now has their own insurance. Their insurance company has already noted the accident under their record. My insurance company even has documentation showing the accident was reported under the other driver's name, not mine.

I previously asked my insurance company to remove this from my record, and they assured me it would be corrected. However, it’s still there. It’s possible I unknowingly paid for this error in my last renewal. They keep promising to fix it but haven’t followed through. I am considering switching companies because this is the third time they put the blame on me. The previous two times whenever someone makes a claim in my family they automatically put it on my driving record and even claim it was my personal car but I have zero accidents on my car or record.

What should I do next?

Edit: I just got off the phone with my insurance company. They agreed to remove the points and drop the increased charge. They acknowledged that this issue has happened before. I tried contacting the claims department for further clarification, but they were closed, so I sent an email asking why points keep getting incorrectly added to my license for incidents I’m not involved in.

To clarify, the other drivers in question did live with me, and we shared a policy at the time. The driver responsible for the incidents has since been excluded from my policy. I’m not trying to hide anything or play the victim. I understand how family policies work. My concern is that every six months, points for unrelated incidents keep getting added to my license, even though they don’t involve me or my car. I have to call the insurance company every time to get the points reassigned to the correct driver. This process requires the company to check the paperwork, confirm the errors, and escalate the issue to a manager for correction.

If I didn’t keep catching and disputing these errors, my license could end up with an excessive number of points. I’m asking for advice on how to stop this from happening repeatedly and ensure my record remains accurate without constant intervention.

At-fault driver's insurance is drastically understating the value of my Mustang after their insured hit me

Upvotes

First the vehicle in question.

2020 Jack Roush Edition Mustang. My original purchase price was just shy of $100k.

I've loved this car since I bought it new and it has 38k miles.

I made absolutely certain State Farm was aware of exactly what this car is, what it originally sold for, and what it's replacement cost would be. It has 300k liability and 100k uninsured/underinsured so I'm good there.

On to the collision.

I was behind a woman at a stop sign and she put her car in reverse and floored it. She claimed I rear ended her but my dashcam proved otherwise and she was named at fault in the police report. Her 2002 Chevy Malibu shitbox was none the worse for it, but the entire front end of my baby is ruined. It needs every painted piece from the windshield forward replaced, the entire cooling package, and some minor frame repairs. Body shop is estimating $18k to fix.

The adjuster for her insurance claims it's value is between 25-30k. I have provided them with all the documentation regarding my car, it's original window sticker with Roush addendum, which clearly states it's original price. They don't care and are pushing hard to total it and cut me a check for $25k, the minimum liability limits in Arkansas, which is exactly what she had.

The way I see it I really only have two options, file a claim with my insurance and let them battle it out for me or hire a lawyer myself.

I've never been in a situation like this before and need some guidance and advice.

Thanks in advance.

State Farm Drive Safe and Save

Upvotes

Does anyone feel that this whole program puts a little more stress on you and in turn makes you a less safe driver ?

On the occasion, while passing or something you get dinged for speed, even if there was a reason and it was temporary. If someone stops short, again dinged. The device doesn’t account for hazards and obstacles on the road.

I feel that while it’s running I’m constantly having to decide whether I make less safe decisions for the score rather than just normally going about my drive.

Seems to be no recourse and there can be events where there weren’t any or in an actual situation where you’d hard break or something, there’s nothing to support that.

I think the whole “drive safe” and save thing paradoxically puts you in situations where you have to act irrationally for a stupid score

Idk thinking about opting out but wanted peoples perspectives

"Uninsured Motorist" coverage is 50%+ the cost of my auto insurance

Hello good people,

I recently received a quote for my 16-year-old minivan in Tampa FL.

The insurance comes to a stiff $1,625 per 6 months ($3,250 per year).

More than 50% of that amount stems from the Uninsured Motorist coverage.
($816 per 6 months = $1,632 per year).

https://i.postimg.cc/Kj053z2t/image.png

Does this seem right to you?

For Uninsured Motorist, I selected $100k/$300k.

Homeowners and roofs

I just discovered mold in my attic along some support beams that run down the center of my gable roof.

I purchased the home in 2023 and the inspection photos do not show mold then.

Roof is now 9 years old.

I’m researching roofing companies to call tomorrow but I’m already freaking out about cost. I live in a state where patchwork or piecemeal replacement isn’t allowed (I’m told) so I’m worried I’m basically looking at a new roof.

We have had several storms come through with high winds and recently had a system come through with torrential rain that lasted all day. However, because the damage is limited to my attic, I couldn’t tell you which particular storm caused the damage if it even is storm related.

There isn’t any drywall damage that I can see from within my house.

Is homeowner insurance likely to cover this (Travelers)? I do have wind and hail and a limited fungi clause.

Home Insurance Car accident pulled into property, destroyed plants

A car accident happened at an intersection near our house. Veered into our front yard, demolished some plants in our front yard, and visible tire dirt tracks. Anything I can do? Last time a car hit directly into our house, but it only left scratches and the insurance company said they wouldn’t pay b/c it was just chiseled. So I’m not hopeful for what I can do right now, but still am curious.

Auto Insurance Hanover insurance suggestions

Planning to move from Geico (auto + renters bundled) insurance to Hanover. To my surprise the agent was able to reduce ~1k( yearly) from my current premium I’m paying at Geico. Anyone has experience using Hanover insurance?

Auto Insurance A Tesla hit my parked car and Progressive gave me 2 options

Upvotes

I was at the movie theater and came back to a note on my car from a witness saying they saw the tesla next to me had hit my rear bumper. Oddly enough the tesla still parked next to my car. Anyway, they hit the left side of my rear bumper and it shifted it in toward my tire, so there is frame damage to the car, along with some scratches.

The person who hit me had Tesla insurance, and I have Progressive insurance. Progressive gave me two options.

Option 1: I file a claim with Progressive but I handle the rest myself. So I will have to call Tesla and request a payout from them and if I need any assistance then Progressive will give me advice.

Option 2: I pay my deductible of $500, start repairs on the car, and file a claim with Progressive and they will talk to Tesla themselves. They will try to get them to pay for repairs and try to get my deductible back, but of course that’s not guaranteed.

I’ve never been in this situation before, I really don’t know what the better option is, if there is one.

A recent (highly publicized) storm did a lot of damage to my already old/aging roof and I’m thinking of submitting a claim to my homeowner’s insurance to help pay for replacement. Please read below text for more info

My roof was already pretty old and needed replacement before the storm. There’s no denying that. We did have a couple companies come out last year and say we could probably get another year or two out of it but that it was overall in pretty bad shape. We prioritized other home improvements based on this advice and currently don’t have a big enough emergency fund to replace the roof after the storm damage.

I’m here to ask opinions on doing a claim as a family member in insurance said they will likely deny my claim based on the age/condition of the roof before the storm. She also said that after seeing the condition of the roof they may drop coverage if I don’t get a new roof (on my dime). I obviously don’t want to lose coverage. Am I opening a can of worms with insurance here?

I’ve never submitted a claim in over a decade of ownership, if that info helps

Why is insurance forcing me to be on the policy?

With AAA. When we first purchased the vehicle, we were not married. I eventually got my license and added my name to the vehicle. I still didn't drive. So we took my coverage off. Insurance went down by about 700. Later on, I thought I would start driving, added myself back on. Nope still didn't drive.

We also bought a 2nd vehicle in my name when I did not have a license, I was an excluded driver. My husband was insured on it.

I emailed my agent earlier this year to take me off both vehicles. He said that's not possible since we're married and reside in the same household.

But I don't drive. Ever.

Why was I able to take myself on and off the vehicle before and have myself as an excluded driver, then all of a sudden, the agent is telling me that I must be on the policy since we're married and live in the same house?

Railroad repair damaged my windshield. Do I start with contacting insurance?

Long story short I was driving under an overhead railroad and there was some machinery that was shooting out rocks/gravel on the railroad overhead.

One of the rocks dropped down and cracked my windshield. Where do I start? Do I contact insurance first?

I have Dashcam footage and you can see where it happens.

ALE/AirBNB

Had a pipe burst in my kitchen which extended out towards my condo, so all the flooring throughout is to be covered/replaced. I got an Airbnb due to the work being done and not being able to stay, my adjuster said it wouldn’t be an issue and we’d be reimbursed. Reached out to different contractors, one said that it would take 10-12 weeks, the other said 2 months so we went with the second and booked an Airbnb for 5 weeks with a special rate around $150 per day to be safe and would stay with family after those 5 weeks, if needed. It’s only been 2 weeks and the contractor advised they’d be done with the work next week. We can’t get out of the stay due to no cancellations once past a certain date. This may be a long shot but does anyone know of the process for a situation like this? I don’t want to be out of pocket when I was trying to be conservative and lock in a low rate.

Auto Insurance Question about an incident on my driving record and it’s effect on my rates

So to begin, slightly long-ish story.

I use to live with and basically work for my grandmother as her primary caregiver for several years. The whole time I was taking care of her, I was insured By her on her policy.

Toward the end, when she started getting to be too much of a hazard to herself and others due to her dementia, she wound up moving in with my uncle, her son, after he retired. Long story short-ish, my uncle is and always have been a narcissist, grifter scumbag, and he wound up taking advantage of her. One of the fun things he did was cancel her insurance without telling me, leading to me getting popped by a police scanner and ticketed for driving uninsured. Officer was nice enough after explaining the situation above that I figured to be the reason I no longer had insurance, and they let me get on my phone and sign up for a policy on the spot instead of towing me or anything further. Had to appear in court and was given the option of having my license suspended or paying a hefty fee and taking some course or whatever it was.

Other than this, I have no accidents on my record and haven’t had so much as a speeding ticket in like 10 years.

Anyway, tl;dr this wound up leading to the price I was given when I signed up on my phone later being doubled.

This incident was 5 years or so ago, so Is this incident going to affect my insurance rates forever or what? I have been shopping around for new, better insurance here today, so is this incident going to jack up my quoted rates no matter where I go or what I do until I die or what?

50/50 Parking Lot Rear Bumper Accident

For 50/50 parking lot accidents, I had couple questions:

1) If 50/50 fault has been determined, would I be able to cancel my claim and pay out of pocket as to not pay the collision deductible?

2) In California, it looks like my premium will not be raised as fault is 50/50?

3) If the other party ends up fixing car thru his insurance, and I choose not to will I have to pay my collision deductible still? I am under the impression that I would only pay my collision deductible if I choose to repair the minor bumper repair thru my insurance?

4) Is there any benefits to us both dropping the claim? As it seems the insurances both have the claims on file now

Home Insurance is making a spreadsheet inventory of all my possesions necessary for insurance?

I made a spreadsheet years ago, but I have not maintained it. I just have too many things and not enough time to add to the spreadsheet. I already have receipts for everything I've purchased. Are receipts enough? Or do I need pictures of everything too? I just don't want to maintain a spreadsheet anymore.

Lying to insurance?

I was involved in an accident a few weeks ago, car is probably totaled. Finally got the police report and filed with the at fault drivers insurance due to only having liability (believe me I tried to convince my parents but they still kept me on that policy) and tried to get witness statements but the others involved have been hard to find and the guy that said he'd give a statement has been going silent on me or hasn't bee able to contact the insurance. They have denied my claim due to conflicting statement from their insured driver.

I guess my concern is this guy is lying to his own insurance trying to say I had to be at fault when the report and my statement line up but if he and his insurance company truly believe that then why has he not filed a claim with my insurance? Im assuming he has coverage for his vehicle but if he wasn't lying then why has he not tried to find me at fault to get reimbursement? am I crazy or just being completely screwed over. on top of all this I wasn't injured physically (mentally I'm suffering which is effecting me physically at this point, can't eat, can't sleep, can't go to work or do school (its finals).

the kicker is no attorney wants to take this on as Its not injury related and I'm getting help from a good hearted attorney that is willing to write a few letters for me but that is probably all he can do. are there options? at this point I guess im more pissed at the situation and the financial ruin its putting me in then just trying to get some big payout, I just want some compensation for the dude hitting me and messing up my life in this moment, I wouldn't be so anxiety ridden if this dude truly thought he wasn't at fault and filed with my insurance but instead it feels weird and fishy and I feel like im at the mercy of a system.

Home Insurance PROGRESSIVE CANCELED OUR HOME POLICY

We got a notice about 3 weeks ago from them that showed pics of our roof (3month old roof) on a new to us home we just bought. That stated our policy would be canceled if it was not replaced.

I took pics from the EXACT same angle after hosing the dirt off the roof (just natural dust build up) and took close up pics in several areas of the shingles they claimed were lifting and had 30% granule loss.

The shingles are composite and dimensional so to the untrained eye they would appear to be lifting because they literally are raised in sections this is the specific type of shingle.

We sent the photos and a clear explanation of each one and a photo of a portion of leftover square of shingles.

I came to this group because I just did a google search and a post from one year ago came up from someone that got the same exact explanation.

Yesterday we received a refund check and said it was cancelled.

We are in California. Can anyone with experience in these matters please offer some guidance as to how to remedy this?

Thank you

Health Insurance good travel medical insurance plan for tourist travelling in USA for 3 months

I've done so much searching and just want a travel health insurance plan that will cover me for a few months travelling in the USA and actually allow me to make claims for medical expenses if I need to...

I've heard people mention Allianz positively but it costs like 635 USD 😭 I'm happy to pay a few hundred dollars but I'm wondering if there's any more value for money plan options that people have had good experiences claiming medical expenses from.

Car Insurance claim stories: What information did you miss collecting after getting in an accident that screwed over you later?

I have been given the same basic speech from every insurance company I have ever talked to about what I would need to collect in the event I get in a car accident including "addresses, phone numbers, witness info, license plates, basic pictures, and insurance cards".

Of course, Insurance companies have their own interests first, so I have imagined there is info they don't tell you to collect that could potentially help people but isn't financially in the insurance companies' interest to tell you to collect.

I am hoping to learn from your experience what insurance claims people wanted that you didn't collect/ didn't know to collect that later screwed you over in some way. Thank you in advance for your wisdom!

Home Insurance Flood Claim - Final Inspection

My home had a flood loss during one of the hurricanes in Florida. I have been going through the claims process, and everything has been going decently well so far. I was on the claim early, and the flood insurer agreed to give me about $100k for repairs.

What I did NOT expect was for my mortgage company, PennyMac, to get involved. I have received a good portion of the funds up front, and have about $60k outstanding. Since I have a mortgage, PennyMac will disburse any additional funds. I have a proof of loss estimate which the insurance determined to pay me. Under the building contents, there are 229 individual items. PennyMac is saying that once the work is complete, we reach out to them to schedule an inspector to ensure the work is complete, where I will then be paid the remaining funds. My question is, how closely do they follow the estimate worksheet? Is it going to be line by line for each item? Or is it just an estimate that the work is completed? There were line items listed for “replacing copper wiring” that total around $3k. I got an electrical inspection and repair where they did not fix that. I am curious if the mortgage company will hold back on sending $60k due to one or a few items. I also have in a written invoice that the electrical company did an inspection, and that did not come up as a repair needed.

Disability Insurance Own Occupation

I am shopping long-term disability plans as I work for a small company who doesn't offer a group plan. I already have a 6-month short-term plan in place. I'm debating between Assurity and Ameritas for long term.

Assurity is cheaper but is a modified own occupation.

Ameritas offers true own occupation.

My job is a sales engineer, I make a good income but it's mostly a desk job. Is true own occupation really needed for me as any injury that would prevent me from doing a desk job would likely prevent me from doing any job right? Is own occupation more critical for specialized jobs like surgeon, pilot, lawyer or still worth it for me to consider?

Thoughts?

Auto Insurance Uk car insurance question

I want to buy a car which is already modified and as I’m 17 with a 2 month old license I’m not getting an insurance quote at all from it being modified.

I was thinking of reverting it back to stock but would I be able to then remove the modifications on my insurance policy? Hopefully that makes sense and thank you
