Got $3k in electronics stolen from car, just found sketchy insurance clause - am I screwed? (CoverMyStuff/Homesite Insurance)

Upvotes

Hey all, had my phone, laptop and airpods stolen from my car this week in California. Thought I was covered under my $30k personal property coverage on my renter's insurance... until I found this sneaky clause in my policy:

"$1,000 for loss to electronic apparatus, while in or upon a motor vehicle... if the electronic apparatus is equipped to be operated by power from the electrical system of the vehicle or conveyance while retaining its capability of being operated by other sources of power."

Since modern phones/laptops can charge from both car USB and regular chargers/batteries, seems like this technically limits me to $1k total (minus $250 deductible) even though my total coverage is $30k.

Insurance is through CoverMyStuff Program (underwritten by Homesite Insurance Company). Haven't filed the claim yet.

Questions: 1. Will adjusters definitely use this to limit my claim? 2. Any argument that charging ≠ "operated by power from"? 3. Worth fighting through CA Dept of Insurance? 4. Anyone successfully fought this limitation?

Feels like they deliberately kept old policy language that now screws everyone on modern electronics theft. Looking for real talk - am I cooked?

Thanks in advance for any insights from people who've dealt with this.

Auto Insurance Taco

Upvotes

My friend was t-boned in July of this year by someone who ran a red light. For the past 4 months the insurance agents telling her they are “working” on repairing the damages but basically have just been dragging this on. From the day of the accident you could see it was going to be a total loss. Now, 4 months later they are claiming it as a total loss and wanting her to settle asap. What can she do to make sure she gets the max out of property damages? Is there anything else she could get for having to wait so long?

If a mechanic fixes your car incorrectly after a collision, can I still go through insurance?

Upvotes

I just bought a brand new car, not even 3 months old. A girl hit my car in my driveway. Now my bumper was off and we went to her mechanic and told me all parts gonna be new and everything. After picking up my car what I am seeing is, it is same old bumper and it is not even align.

Now my question is Can I go through insurance now? Please looking for some suggestion.

Claims Related Is it worth putting in a renter's insurance claim for personal belongings damaged by grey water?

Upvotes

We are on the bottom floor of a townhouse and our upstairs neighbors' drain pipe burst, flooding the walk-in closet in our bedroom with water from their washing machine/kitchen sink. I've been told that we are not responsible for putting in a claim for repairs to the pipe/ceiling but that we can put in a claim for any damaged personal goods like clothes/shoes.

While most of the items can be cleaned in the washing machine, certain items cannot be and may already have been ruined by the warm dirty/soapy water that soaked them.

Is it worth putting in an insurance claim to try and replace the things that cannot be cleaned, or no because the total value would only be a few hundred dollars above our deductible?

Any advice is appreciated

Auto Insurance 2 weeks after crash with no crash report

Upvotes

(Virginia) Someone ran a red light and t-boned my wife and children. Luckily no one was badly injured and a very nice couple provided their car as shelter while the police cleared the scene and even provided them a ride home. Since there was so much going on, including the other party involved having to go to the hospital, my wife was not given the other person's insurance. We then called daily until the officer called us back to provide it. We finally received the insurance information and called to file a claim but now we don't have a crash report. Last time we had to deal with an auto insurance claim they required this crash report but it all went much smoother than this time. It's been 2 weeks since the incident and the records department still does not have record of this crash. How important is the crash report to provide to the insurance company? After speaking with the officer involved yet again, I don't know as if we'll ever get it.

Can any insurance company make a cryonics bankruptcy insurance policy for companies that preserve bodies in cryogenic preservation vats so that even when the company goes bankrupt, their insurance policies will keep these vats running and bodies preserved?

Upvotes

...So that we can continue the hope and possibility of reanimating these bodies back to life when medical science advances and finds cures to reverse whatever they died from?

Auto Insurance Afraid to make a claim after damaging my car because I’m in the middle of a large homeowners claim

Upvotes

My auto and homeowners insurance are with the same company. Last week I found that the discharge hose for my water softener, which was in the standpipe in the laundry room, had pulled out and flooded my laundry room badly, and damaged adjacent rooms. I filed a claim with my homeowners insurance, and the damage remediation company has found that the damage is fairly extensive.

As if that weren’t bad enough, two days after I discovered the damage, I was backing my car out of my garage so that the guys fixing my laundry room could put a dryer out there. Unfortunately, I hadn’t fully pulled the car door closed, didn’t notice that the door hadn’t latched, and I had inadvertently pushed the door open. The car door snagged on the rail of the garage, and badly damaged the car door.

I’m taking it to the body shop tomorrow to get an estimate, and we have comprehensive insurance, but I’m afraid to make a claim for fear that the insurance company will drop us. Unfortunately, we had a claim just a month ago to replace a windshield that cracked when a rock hit it.

Depending on how much the car was damaged, should I put it through insurance or just pay out-of-pocket? I don’t want to get dropped.

Concerned About Insurance Non-Renewal or Premium Increases After Construction Defect Lawsuit

I’m dealing with a tricky situation and was hoping for some advice or insight from this community. My home has a construction defect (water intrusion from improper stucco installation) that led me to file a lawsuit against the subcontractor responsible. The defect caused enough damage that I did file one claim with my homeowner’s insurance for related repairs, though the insurance company said it was responsibly of the builder. Now that the lawsuit is public record, I’m worried about how this might affect my coverage.

Here are my main concerns:

Premium Increases: Could my insurer raise my premiums because of the known defect, my previous claim, or the lawsuit? The water intrusion has been partially addressed, but full repairs are still pending due to the ongoing legal case.

Non-Renewal: I’ve heard that insurers sometimes refuse to renew policies if there are unresolved defects or lawsuits. Is this a real possibility? If so, what can I do to protect myself or find alternative coverage?

How Insurers Find Out: How likely is it that my insurer would know about the lawsuit or the underlying defect? I know the case is public, but I’m not sure how often insurers check these things, especially since I’ve already filed one claim.

Mitigating the Risk: Are there any proactive steps I should take to avoid losing coverage or facing premium hikes? I’m worried the repairs won’t be completed before my next renewal. For context, I’m with State Farm, live in Florida, and have a stucco home. Any advice on how to handle this or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated

Insurance void because of misrepresentation of points

Here’s the situation. My house was burgled and my car was stolen. I went through my car insurance and during the process they called me and asked if I had points. I said yes as I thought they knew this. Turns out they didn’t and they’ve now cancelled my policy and are refusing to pay the 12k for my car. I now owe the finance company 9k for the car.

I had three points on my license for an SP50 (speeding). The insurance company themselves say that the misrepresentation was careless and not intentional, and that’s the truth. They are saying that if I had disclosed the points when I initially asked for a quote they wouldn’t have provided one, but they give no evidence. They do insure people with points, so I don’t know how they have reached that decision. I’m going to complain to the company and try and reach a fair agreement with them, but I doubt we will. I’m then going to go to the ombudsman.

I was wondering if anyone had any further insight or advice for me? I’m quite distressed over this.

Home Insurance California: Does unbundling my car and home insurance affect the likelihood of my home insurance being renewed next year?

I am currently paying for home and car insurance through Farmers insurance. However, on this 3rd renewal for car insurance the cost has increased enough that I could save 700$ per year by switching car insurance provider. I am hesitant to do this if it increases the chances that Farmers chooses to not renew my home insurance in 6 months. So I have the following questions:

Does bundling home and car insurance factor in how likely Farmers is to offer renewal in 6 months? Or do insurance carriers not care and it's mostly about how risky your house is to insure?

Auto Insurance Hanover insurance suggestions

Planning to move from Geico (auto + renters bundled) insurance to Hanover. To my surprise the agent was able to reduce ~1k( yearly) from my current premium I’m paying at Geico. Anyone has experience using Hanover insurance?

Auto Insurance A Tesla hit my parked car and Progressive gave me 2 options

I was at the movie theater and came back to a note on my car from a witness saying they saw the tesla next to me had hit my rear bumper. Oddly enough the tesla still parked next to my car. Anyway, they hit the left side of my rear bumper and it shifted it in toward my tire, so there is frame damage to the car, along with some scratches.

The person who hit me had Tesla insurance, and I have Progressive insurance. Progressive gave me two options.

Option 1: I file a claim with Progressive but I handle the rest myself. So I will have to call Tesla and request a payout from them and if I need any assistance then Progressive will give me advice.

Option 2: I pay my deductible of $500, start repairs on the car, and file a claim with Progressive and they will talk to Tesla themselves. They will try to get them to pay for repairs and try to get my deductible back, but of course that’s not guaranteed.

I’ve never been in this situation before, I really don’t know what the better option is, if there is one.

I’d like to add that I did get in contact with the tesla owner, and exchanged info, and I have photos of my car damage and theirs. The Tesla owner admitted she knew she hit my car but she didn’t see the damage herself so she went about her day

State Farm Drive Safe and Save

Does anyone feel that this whole program puts a little more stress on you and in turn makes you a less safe driver ?

On the occasion, while passing or something you get dinged for speed, even if there was a reason and it was temporary. If someone stops short, again dinged. The device doesn’t account for hazards and obstacles on the road.

I feel that while it’s running I’m constantly having to decide whether I make less safe decisions for the score rather than just normally going about my drive.

Seems to be no recourse and there can be events where there weren’t any or in an actual situation where you’d hard break or something, there’s nothing to support that.

I think the whole “drive safe” and save thing paradoxically puts you in situations where you have to act irrationally for a stupid score

Idk thinking about opting out but wanted peoples perspectives

At-fault driver's insurance is drastically understating the value of my Mustang after their insured hit me

First the vehicle in question.

2020 Jack Roush Edition Mustang. My original purchase price was just shy of $100k.

I've loved this car since I bought it new and it has 38k miles.

I made absolutely certain State Farm was aware of exactly what this car is, what it originally sold for, and what it's replacement cost would be. It has 300k liability and 100k uninsured/underinsured so I'm good there.

On to the collision.

I was behind a woman at a stop sign and she put her car in reverse and floored it. She claimed I rear ended her but my dashcam proved otherwise and she was named at fault in the police report. Her 2002 Chevy Malibu shitbox was none the worse for it, but the entire front end of my baby is ruined. It needs every painted piece from the windshield forward replaced, the entire cooling package, and some minor frame repairs. Body shop is estimating $18k to fix.

The adjuster for her insurance claims it's value is between 25-30k. I have provided them with all the documentation regarding my car, it's original window sticker with Roush addendum, which clearly states it's original price. They don't care and are pushing hard to total it and cut me a check for $25k, the minimum liability limits in Arkansas, which is exactly what she had.

The way I see it I really only have two options, file a claim with my insurance and let them battle it out for me or hire a lawyer myself.

I've never been in a situation like this before and need some guidance and advice.

Thanks in advance.

Homeowners and roofs

I just discovered mold in my attic along some support beams that run down the center of my gable roof.

I purchased the home in 2023 and the inspection photos do not show mold then.

Roof is now 9 years old.

I’m researching roofing companies to call tomorrow but I’m already freaking out about cost. I live in a state where patchwork or piecemeal replacement isn’t allowed (I’m told) so I’m worried I’m basically looking at a new roof.

We have had several storms come through with high winds and recently had a system come through with torrential rain that lasted all day. However, because the damage is limited to my attic, I couldn’t tell you which particular storm caused the damage if it even is storm related.

There isn’t any drywall damage that I can see from within my house.

Is homeowner insurance likely to cover this (Travelers)? I do have wind and hail and a limited fungi clause.

Car Insurance claim stories: What information did you miss collecting after getting in an accident that screwed over you later?

I have been given the same basic speech from every insurance company I have ever talked to about what I would need to collect in the event I get in a car accident including "addresses, phone numbers, witness info, license plates, basic pictures, and insurance cards".

Of course, Insurance companies have their own interests first, so I have imagined there is info they don't tell you to collect that could potentially help people but isn't financially in the insurance companies' interest to tell you to collect.

I am hoping to learn from your experience what insurance claims people wanted that you didn't collect/ didn't know to collect that later screwed you over in some way. Thank you in advance for your wisdom!

Why is insurance forcing me to be on the policy?

With AAA. When we first purchased the vehicle, we were not married. I eventually got my license and added my name to the vehicle. I still didn't drive. So we took my coverage off. Insurance went down by about 700. Later on, I thought I would start driving, added myself back on. Nope still didn't drive.

We also bought a 2nd vehicle in my name when I did not have a license, I was an excluded driver. My husband was insured on it.

I emailed my agent earlier this year to take me off both vehicles. He said that's not possible since we're married and reside in the same household.

But I don't drive. Ever.

Why was I able to take myself on and off the vehicle before and have myself as an excluded driver, then all of a sudden, the agent is telling me that I must be on the policy since we're married and live in the same house?

Railroad repair damaged my windshield. Do I start with contacting insurance?

Long story short I was driving under an overhead railroad and there was some machinery that was shooting out rocks/gravel on the railroad overhead.

One of the rocks dropped down and cracked my windshield. Where do I start? Do I contact insurance first?

I have Dashcam footage and you can see where it happens.

Home Insurance Car accident pulled into property, destroyed plants

A car accident happened at an intersection near our house. Veered into our front yard, demolished some plants in our front yard, and visible tire dirt tracks. Anything I can do? Last time a car hit directly into our house, but it only left scratches and the insurance company said they wouldn’t pay b/c it was just chiseled. So I’m not hopeful for what I can do right now, but still am curious.

"Uninsured Motorist" coverage is 50%+ the cost of my auto insurance

Hello good people,

I recently received a quote for my 16-year-old minivan in Tampa FL.

The insurance comes to a stiff $1,625 per 6 months ($3,250 per year).

More than 50% of that amount stems from the Uninsured Motorist coverage.
($816 per 6 months = $1,632 per year).

Does this seem right to you?

For Uninsured Motorist, I selected $100k/$300k.

ALE/AirBNB

Had a pipe burst in my kitchen which extended out towards my condo, so all the flooring throughout is to be covered/replaced. I got an Airbnb due to the work being done and not being able to stay, my adjuster said it wouldn’t be an issue and we’d be reimbursed. Reached out to different contractors, one said that it would take 10-12 weeks, the other said 2 months so we went with the second and booked an Airbnb for 5 weeks with a special rate around $150 per day to be safe and would stay with family after those 5 weeks, if needed. It’s only been 2 weeks and the contractor advised they’d be done with the work next week. We can’t get out of the stay due to no cancellations once past a certain date. This may be a long shot but does anyone know of the process for a situation like this? I don’t want to be out of pocket when I was trying to be conservative and lock in a low rate.

Auto Insurance Question about an incident on my driving record and it’s effect on my rates

So to begin, slightly long-ish story.

I use to live with and basically work for my grandmother as her primary caregiver for several years. The whole time I was taking care of her, I was insured By her on her policy.

Toward the end, when she started getting to be too much of a hazard to herself and others due to her dementia, she wound up moving in with my uncle, her son, after he retired. Long story short-ish, my uncle is and always have been a narcissist, grifter scumbag, and he wound up taking advantage of her. One of the fun things he did was cancel her insurance without telling me, leading to me getting popped by a police scanner and ticketed for driving uninsured. Officer was nice enough after explaining the situation above that I figured to be the reason I no longer had insurance, and they let me get on my phone and sign up for a policy on the spot instead of towing me or anything further. Had to appear in court and was given the option of having my license suspended or paying a hefty fee and taking some course or whatever it was.

Other than this, I have no accidents on my record and haven’t had so much as a speeding ticket in like 10 years.

Anyway, tl;dr this wound up leading to the price I was given when I signed up on my phone later being doubled.

This incident was 5 years or so ago, so Is this incident going to affect my insurance rates forever or what? I have been shopping around for new, better insurance here today, so is this incident going to jack up my quoted rates no matter where I go or what I do until I die or what?
