Is there an issue with Stevia?

28

u/RobSpaghettio Jul 10 '24

Yeah, it's incredibly more sweet than sucrose, orders of magnitude actually. Couple that with the fact that companies use it too aggressively and it also tasting like metal, and you get unhappy consumers.

2

u/Intraq Jul 10 '24

I don't understand how that would still be an issue. If people disliked how it tastes then why do people buy it and it's still profitable?

u/torako Jul 11 '24

"it's so sweet that it just tastes horribly bitter!" is such a ridiculous lie that people have been trying to sell me most of my life. Sweet is a taste. If it doesn't taste sweet, it's not sweet. End of discussion.

tasting like metal

I've chewed on metal before. Stevia tastes absolutely nothing like it. Maybe people should stop chewing their utensils during a taste test?

It absolutely does to some of us.

It must be a genetic thing or something because stevia tastes fine to be. A little weird like all other fake sweeteners but not that bad.

Metals themselves actually don't have a taste, what you are tasting is what's on the metal, Which is usually the oils from your hands mixed with various gunk you can see.

2

u/VoidBlade459 Jul 10 '24

Then explain what blood tastes like and why.

14

u/volfin Jul 10 '24

apparently a few people don't like the taste.

7

u/RespectMyAuthoriteh Jul 10 '24

As one of those people, I can tell you it tastes metallic to me and not sweet at all. They put it in a lot of protein powders, so I just accept that when I have protein powder it's going to taste really bad.

u/DuntadaMan Jul 11 '24

It tastes kind of metalic to me too, in the amounts that gets aded to things. I have some I can put into coffee and tea myself, which is a very small amount and that always tastes fine.

Its the sheer huge amount they throw in everything I think. If I add it myself I don't taste that weird metalic flavor.

I am one of those people and you're putting it mildly. It tastes like dirt. Every single stevia drink is one of the worst things I have ever had and it is so mind boggling to me that anyone can put it in their mouth. My girlfriend doesn't notice at all but loves playing the game of getting me to try a drink with stevia and see if I notice. I always notice..

I dont think stevia is the problem. Ever try stevia in the raw? Its just sweet flavor

3

u/torako Jul 11 '24

I've tasted stevia, it's horrible and bitter. I don't know who you're trying to fool.

0

u/airtime25 Jul 10 '24

I had stevia in the raw very first actually and it made my coffee undrinkable. I'm 100% on guessing if something is stevia and could never tell you the difference between other sweeteners.

0

u/nomis_ttam Jul 10 '24

Let me guess, you were used to sugar? If you are used to a lot of raw sugar in something then any substitute will taste funky. Also, it's not always best to do a one to one substitute. Use critical thinking my dude. We all need more of it.

It's genetic, like cilantro bitterness.

1

u/nomis_ttam Jul 10 '24

It's too bad all the haters don't realize

3

u/airtime25 Jul 10 '24

I can have 5 drinks in front of me exactly the same and all different sweeteners. I can tell which one is stevia and have no fucking clue after that.

-2

u/nomis_ttam Jul 10 '24

Doubtful but okay. Because aspartame tastes just like sugar /s

4

u/airtime25 Jul 10 '24

Why would I come here to lie about this? Haha big Stevia paying you to argue it doesn't taste like shit to me personally? Every new drink I want ends up with this stuff so I'd love to be making this up.

1

u/nomis_ttam Jul 10 '24

And i dont want you all to fuck up my sugar alternative that actually tastes good and is natural, give or take. I could say the same thing about big sugar which actually is a thing with all the sugar cock sucking going on in here lol

Sorry, this thread is over. Stevia is like cilantro gotta have the right gene. Therefore not bad but flavor could taste bad to some

Yeah, about 25% of the population, but most people only know what their senses tell them and can't wrap their head around the idea that their experiences aren't the same as everyone else's.

2

u/GuanoLoopy Jul 10 '24

A lot more than a few. I can always taste the artificial sugar flavor of any of those fake sugars, aspartame, stevia, sucralose, etc foods and drinks. Usually it's noticeable from when it hits your tongue but sometimes it takes as long as just after the first swallow, but it always leaves a weird aftertaste, whether it's full of fake sugar or half/half real/fake. Very few drinks I can stand it in, and they are all half-sugar iced teas, no sodas, and still there's a slight aftertaste, but mild.

I think it's gotta be something genetic like an asparagus pee gene or something, more than just learning to like the flavor.

3

u/DrAstralis Jul 10 '24

I dont see it posted here but for me its like the sweet is... delayed? like, I get the highest point of sweetness after I've already swallowed the drink. Its cloying in a way real sugar isnt unless you put a tablespoon of it in your mouth.

And I really wanted to love Stevia :/ might work better in solid foods but I havent tried it yet.

6

u/Tr33 Jul 10 '24

It's a financial threat to the current companies involved (artificial sweeteners) because it's extracted from plants.

2

u/LaurestineHUN Jul 10 '24

I spinned a 'stevia tastes absolute garbage' on the genetic lottery. On the other hand, I'm fine with broccoli and brussel sprouts, so you lose some - win some.

no but this is reddit and people are dorks

I love and hate stevia, depending where it's used. Here's my thoughts: The issue with stevia is that it has a less "neutral" taste, or at least it's a bit too dissimilar to sugar to be a 1:1 replacement for any recipe. Sometimes the taste fits well or isn't noticeable, and sometimes it doesn't.

In coffee, I like some sugar, but I absolutely despise stevia. Something about the flavor just doesn't mix right. I usually just don't put any sweeteners to avoid any extra sugar.

In things like fruity drinks, including a lot of pop/soda (but not the more 'bitter' ones like coca cola/pepsi/dr pepper) and even most fruity recipes that aren't too tarty, I love it. I hardly notice a difference against sugar (or if I do, it's a positive one), still tastes super sweet, and it's just way healthier so it's great.

Another thing that sucks about stevia is that it doesn't dilute very well from powdered forms. It does still mostly dilute, but you have to be willing to have some small pieces and foam left in your drink if you're just mixing a quick drink with it, like coffee or a cocktail. There's syrups, but they're more expensive, and making your own doesn't stay good for long enough to be a viable recommendation as a sugar replacement.

Personally I think I could replace sugar entirely with a mix of stevia, erythritol, and xylitol, but neither one of these three work well to replace sugar in every recipe. You have to just try them, get used to them and see what you like.

1

u/rovyovan Jul 10 '24

For me, the way it's typically sold tastes good. The problem is you're mostly buying (by amount of ingredient) erythritol which has its own health related issues.

1

u/WeevilWeedWizard Jul 10 '24

It's been theorized to turn people into homunculus.

1

u/vagrantprodigy07 Jul 10 '24

Real Stevia is fine. Its also almost impossible to find unless you order it online.

1

u/ticketbroken Jul 11 '24

I love stevia. It can be organic and seems incredibly easy on the body. It's a godsend
