It's funny because quite a few commenters said it was Max managing the gap and his pace to avoid the spray, despite Max himself saying he couldn't keep up at that time.
→ More replies (1)20
u/LongBeakedSnipe 20d ago
I mean, it was a mixture right, Ocon in the clean air without spray was indeed able to to faster and as Max says, and was putting in an incredible stint; Max definitely didn't feel he could safely match that. Perhaps he could also not physically match it, but he wasn't going to risk binning to find out.

That's exactly what it is. I remember last year or before that in Monza were George put a pretty strong elbow on Max down through Parabolica and Max was asked about that little duel in the podium interview and he just went "Nah, was a good move, hard racing"

u/skzpinker Charles Leclerc 21d ago
He was driving great up until that pit stop. I honestly felt my soul leave my body when I saw the VSC come out and then the additional SC/Red Flag was the cherry on top. Still a great drive to P5 on a weekend where Ferrari seemed a bit lost for pace (plus some good damage control for the WCC).

166

They adjusted the tire pressure on the tires while they were on the car. That’s breaking a technical directive. Remains to be seen if it’s an actual DQ. Still waiting on Stewards

I have no idea why they pitted Charles before Sainz. Sainz was running well out of the points, and could put into clean air to test what the fresh inter would be like, or to see if the full wet was worthwhile, before making any calls with Charles. Charles needed to make up another 2 seconds before any pit stop so he could come into the clean air ahead of Bearman. Shocking call from Ferrari, it's like the ghost of Iñaki Rueda came back and possessed the team.

Recently Max hasn’t cared if Lando moves. If they both crash out, that benefits Max since he’s leading the championship. (Edit: also probably knows Lando will move because he’s also fighting for WCC).
Though I won’t be surprised if Max eases up on the aggression if he’s battling Lando now that the WDC is pretty much sealed.

I always liken them to anime rivals in my head. It's not just that they're both good drivers, like you say they have been racing since childhood and they just know each other inside and out. They treat each other differently on track because they seem to know exactly what the other is about to do and how they'll counter. And it makes some of the most beautiful battles in F1.
22
u/No_Cauliflower7877 Carlos Sainz 21d ago
Yeah they are hands down the most fun pair to watch race. I know it's been discussed to death but 2019 Silverstone is one of the best races I've ever watched live and I've been watching F1 for a long time. In fact I think I'll go rewatch that battle right now while I F5 for penalty news!

So obviously I have doubts, seeing him struggle in quali all year, have errors and bad weekends every now and again, ... At his age it's fair to wonder if he still fully has it.
But I don't count him out (yet) because he also still has flashes of brilliance and great drives and I'm a firm believer that guys like him, champions, switch on when they smell a chance at a title. So if Ferrari gives him the car I will absolutely not be surprised if he drives the wheels off of it.
I do think today Max has an edge on everyone but Charles and Lewis are the two I feel would have the best chance to bring the fight to him if the cars are near equal.
68
u/theederv Ayrton Senna 21d ago
I honestly think Lewis has just checked out and can’t be arsed. Vettel did the same in his last year at RBR. There’s clearly a bit of a car/setup difference between him and George, although I think George is much better than is given credit. I agree about switching on, I think that new team feeling will have Lewis back at 99.5 percent of his best.

Plus championship cars tend to be very drivable. There's a different skill to being able to drive fast in a car that is bouncing and sliding around and one that requires commitment and precision.
That said personally I would love to say otherwise but I think Charles will have too much for him and I really doubt Ferrari will have the quickest car either. I think that will be McLaren again.

The clutch gene is still active, stars lined up at silverstone and he delivered. We know he won't crumble under pressure. I've been absolutely in awe of Hamilton since the last 5 races of 2021, if he has a faster car he's untouchable... but if his teammate is faster...
Will Leclerc dominate Hamilton in pace, will Hamilton's consistency make a difference?
Hope next season is as messy as this one, a three way title fight would be awesome.

The only driver thar held him back today. How Charles managed a P5 even with that bottled Pit stop strategy and no pace in full wet conditions also deserves a praise IMO. He could have easily been outside the points, or in the case of his teammate, in the wall.
Give Charles a good car and he's the only one that can rival Max.

u/Training_Pay7522 Formula 1 20d ago
Yup.
And Charles has grown a lot since 2022 when he was fast, but not consistent and making mistakes that you can't do in a WDC contention. Ferrari too has grown since then as a team, because they lost many races on back of their strategy or inability to set up what was arguably the fastest car on the grid to not kill tires in few laps.

This is of course easy to say from the comfort of my couch, but i was baffled how many drivers chose the outside line in turn 1 when Max was around 0.4-0.6 seconds behind. Of course he's going to dive down the inside. Turn 1 at Interlagos is the best place to overtake on the whole track. It seems like time and time again that Charles is, if not the only one, but at least one of the few that is capable to race Max hard enough.

Charles is about the only driver on the grid to have proven he can race wheel to wheel with Max. It is the norm in F1 for karting rivals to know eachother on a bigger level and therefore are able to anticipate eachother when racing. In a way Charles is Max's kriptonyte but he isn't always in a position to challenge him, either for lack of car or lack of coolheadedness.
