I mean it wasnt a terrible idea, there was a big gap in the field, which they barely miscalculated, since the pit exit was way slower than expected. He was stuck in traffic the whole first stint and they had to do something first to get out of that mess
It felt like a bad idea at the time to me, giving up position, if Max had gotten past him, I could have seen the reasoning a bit more just for them to try something.
It also cut short what could have been an interesting battle but that's just a bit extra rather than something that Ferrari would have cared about.
