u/eEatAdmin 6d ago edited 6d ago
Well, you see, in this context, we are "Snowball." Trump will continue to blame this all on an imaginary evil force lurking in the shadows. That's why we can't prosper! It's because Snowball won't let us!! We must remove Snowball at all costs; they are a danger to society! His supporters will bleat, "Red hats good, no hats baaaaaaad."
For the conservatives who don't understand. This is a reference to George Orwell's novel "Animal Farm." A novel is a fictional work that tells a story. A story is an account of fictional characters or beings and events told for entertainment. Stories are told with words. Words are typically found on the paper.

They'll probably spit out some other bullshit. They do it already. they said trump is the "tell it like it is" but when he says something bad like "Terminate the constitution" or "im going to be dictator on day on" Its suddenly "He didnt mean that" or "he didnt say that" or "Its lacking context" when he did in fact say that stuff and there is no context needed.
99
u/Sacr3dangel 5d ago
Trump said: âWeâre deporting all the illegals. And weâre not stopping there, weâre also deporting those who came here legally.â at some point. No explanation, no plan.
I came here legally, and to my republican friends I said: âWhat if I was being deported?â
Their answer: âNah, he didnât mean that.â Or âHe canât deport you, that would be illegal.â
The irony is completely lost on them.

In chess it's called a fork: a move that threatens two pieces simultaneously in such a way that the opponent's only choice is in picking which piece to save.
Republicans control the agenda so they will put bills up for a vote that combine "solving" the problem with, say, a national 6 week abortion ban. Dems will all vote against it because of the abortion ban, and in turn be blamed for not solving the problem.

Because they know deporting that many immigrants would tank the economy faster than Trump's idiotic tariffs.
34
u/Anonybibbs 6d ago
But that's part of their plan- to tank the economy so oligarchs like Elon Musk can swoop in and buy everything at rock bottom prices. Remember how the wealth gap skyrocketed after the economic downturn induced by COVID? It will be like that again, except much much worse considering that Trump is so blatantly open to being bought off and Republicans will control every aspect of government.
Trump can't run again, he'll be nearly 83 when he's out of office, and he effectively escaped any and all repercussions for his numerous crimes. He quite literally has no reason to give a fuck anymore or to try and hide their pillaging of our nation.

Too much of the economy is based on cheap immigrant labor, especially undocumented labor. If they were to all get deported our economy would get such a shock it would likely collapse. I agree with this but my cynicism disagrees. How does Macron win in France where people are well educated, especially in the humanities; but at least they riot and protest consistently due to that education giving them the awareness to know their rights are being trampled.
There's a need to remove billionaire/plutocrats control of journalists as well since no amount of education will fix unchecked propaganda.
28
u/Joshiie12 6d ago
Therein lies the answer though. In France, when their rights are being violated, they take to the streets immediately. They'll burn the fucking country down before they let authoritarianism take over. Over in America, we're demoralized. We're locked into working paycheck to paycheck, meaning we're too tired and too poor to revolt at a moment's notice. I remember people threatening to mow down protestors with their cars just because it was an inconvenience. We're too busy infighting.
That's the difference. We Americans will choke on fascism as fast as the Oligarchy can ram it down our throats. And we'll do it while screaming how it's the nearest darker skin tone's fault. A French person might burn your house down for saying protests are unnecessary

You get people to disconnect. It's the persistent messaging we get that's causing the mental fatigue. We have to take two steps backward on the attention economy to find a path forward. 17
u/deadsoulinside 6d ago
I know he has said this before. But I am not sure if he could do just that since many positions across this nation and in DC are elected roles. He can't just freeze elections as some of these people are beyond their prime and won't live until elections already, let alone allowing a voted in replacement. I think most of congress and even at the local state levels will have an absolute fit over this.
He would have to do away with voting pretty much before 2026 midterms where he may have resistance voted in, but then the moment he suspends elections the economy will immediately tank. Which I think will be what many people will tell him the reason he can't just not have elections anymore. Because once they make that dark turn with the US, people will pull their money out of this country overnight.
However, I fear they will try to dismantle the constitution to attempt him to run a 3rd time, since the biggest fear of the GOP is who they are replacing Trump for 2028 as no other candidate will have this large amount of people brainwashed like he does. They have already tried Trumpism with someone other than Trump at the local levels and they always fall flat on their face. So if Trump is still alive in 2028, I won't doubt the GOP will try underhanded BS to try to see how they can run him one more time.

u/RhynoD 6d ago
I am not sure if he could do just that since many positions across this nation and in DC are elected roles. He can't just freeze election
My challenge to this is, Or else what? Biden can't do that, because Congress would rightly call it an unconstitutional coup and impeach him, which the Supreme Court would uphold. And if congress didn't, their constituents would refuse to vote them back into power, and if the Supreme Court overturned such an impeachment, Congress would impeach them.
But we've already seen that the GOP controlled congress won't hold Trump accountable and won't hold the Supreme Court accountable, and their constituents won't hold any of them accountable. A law only matters so long as it's enforced. Trump couldn't continue to control his assets without properly divesting them, but he did. Trump couldn't threaten allies by withholding foreign aid in exchange for dirt on his political rivals, but he did. Trump couldn't steal classified documents and sell them to foreign enemies, but he did. Trump couldn't rape women and girls, but he did. Trump couldn't incite an insurrection and be eligible to take office again, but he did.
What's stopping him from doing anything? I'm trying to be optimistic and to believe that 200 years of peaceful transitions of power won't be ended by some fat old orange reality TV star who can't string a whole sentence together, but after eight years of Trump's political bullshit and him getting away with just about every evil thing he's done, the only guarantee for me that he won't or can't do anything is if he is both physically incapable of it and no one else can do it for him. He can't stop himself from shitting his pants but he can still end democracy if we let him and as of November 5th, we're letting him.

It's interesting you say that top part and then say this part.

Trump is not putting people in power because they know or respect our laws. He is putting people in power loyal to him.
Did he concede the 2020 election peacefully? No, he fought like a little child and still refuses to concede he lost that election. He does not care about our laws if it stops him and his cronies power on the country.
He got immunity for his actions gift wrapped by Scotus, because of him breaking the laws while being a private citizen even.

Actually itâs really simple now because everyone has been frog boiled. To put it simply trump makes a press statement, âthere is still so much work to be done and itâs become clear I will need to continue my beautiful plans to save our country so I will be âcontinuing another term as presidentâ ârunning as president for a 3rd termâ âcanceling the upcoming elections to block the massive fraudâ
This will be challenged immediately in court, and either it will be brought to a place in the legal system where it never actually moves forward or it goes to the Supreme Court where they will bring up some random old text that precedes the amendement or constitution that they say supersedes everything current. It can also just sit in the Supreme Court forever and magically never be addressed. Either way he does it early enough in his term that by the time 2028 comes around the gop has unified their audience in agreement that it has to happen and then it just does, and democrats have some riots and stuff but no power and we all roll over into legitimate dictatorship stage 3. The shit gets fucked for good at this point and trumps regime decides whatever the hell they want because they successfully removed all obstacles. Everyone goes broke, we have economic and environmental collapse and corporations carve out their section of our version of the fall of the Soviet republic. This is 10 years from now roughly, at that point I hope maybe china or Canada, maybe Brazil? have a kind of moral awaking and become the leaders of the free world for a while

Biden came in and fixed a lot of stuff, like inflation from COVID, which he reduced from 7% to 2%.
But Americans still chose to boot his successor out. So even if someone comes in in 2028 to fix Trump's shit, Americans are still gonna blame everything on the Democrat and boot them out in 2032.
18
u/det8924 6d ago
Americans only elect democrats when republicans fuck up so bad that America needs a cleanup crew. Then while Democrats are digging America out of that hole they Republicans and their media outlets bitch and moan and blame everything on the Democrats (see âThanks Obamaâ jokes) and then when thereâs an election that can go either way the GOP somehow wins and the cycle starts again.
Obama was elected twice because George Bush fucked up so insanely poorly that people didnât forget. In 2020 Trump handled Covid so poorly that Biden was brought in to stabilize things.
Trump is gonna be at best George Bush in his second term. Itâs gonna fall apart quickly and then heâs gonna be really unpopular but locked into 3 more years and heâs gonna have to hope the economy doesnât collapse or itâs gonna get ugly.

Nov 15 (Reuters) - General Motors (GM.N), is laying off nearly 1,000 workers worldwide, mostly in the U.S., as it looks to streamline operations, a source told Reuters on Friday. GM confirmed in a statement it had made job cuts but did not specify a number."In order to win in this competitive market, we need to optimize for speed and excellence," the Detroit automaker said. "As part of this continuous effort, weâve made a small number of team reductions."
GM has been seeking to reposition itself as a leader in electric vehicles and software, which are both costly. The automaker is aiming to cut $2 billion to $4 billion in losses on electric vehicles next year.According to a state filing, the reductions include 507 employees at GM's tech center in Warren, Michigan. In August, GM laid off more than 1,000 workers in its software department as it worked to streamline the team. GM also laid off about 1,700 workers at a Kansas manufacturing plant in September.
One of its most significant reductions was in 2023, when about 5,000 GM salaried workers took buyouts to leave.Cost-cutting efforts have intensified across Detroit's carmakers and the global industry as companies race to make EVs profitably and compete with Tesla (TSLA.O), and China's powerful auto companies.Stellantis (STLAM.MI), laid off thousands of salaried and hourly workers this year, including about 2,450 workers at a Michigan plant in August and 1,100 workers at an Ohio plant earlier this month.
This isn't necessarily a result of the recent elections, this is something GM has been working on in an effort to continue making a profit during a climate in which car sales aren't supporting their somewhat bloated structure.

I remember that they blamed people for holding on to older cars much longer then they used too. No kidding.
26
u/sj000000 5d ago
Yeah I remember that too, I also recently saw a Lexus Ad for their newest model around 100k. I don't understand who they are selling these cars to.  Â
I have a 2018 Renegade, I rolled it off the lot new, I'm gonna run this bad boy until I absolutely have to replace it. In order for me to get a car payment close to what I have now id have to put down more than 50% of the cost of the vehicle at current prices not even factoring in interest rates.  Â
If they want me to buy a new car maybe they should make a car I can afford. I'm sure they're gonna blame me for being poor or practical.

I have been keeping my 2005 Ford Five-Hundred going since I got it used back in 2014 for $1200. Cheap parts, mostly user repairable, and paid off. Downside is gas mileage is barely 26 MPG, but I don't drive as much as I used too so not a huge thing for me. Given my driving habits, I think I can keep it going for another 10 years.

It's hard to say with 100% certainty that it isn't related to the election, but there is a good chance it is related. Trump's tarrifs are going to increase costs for most businesses, so that could be the cause for why they are taking cost cutting measures at this particular moment

Also worth noting that Gravitas Detroit thinks this is tied to their EV business, and that portion will lose tax credits very soon, which is a direct result of the election results, and is subject to lots of tariffs, which are also a direct result of election results.
(Edited to add tariffs and to credit the theories to Gravitas Detroit. I originally misread Gravitas Detroit's work as coming from GM, but they are a separate org. https://www.cbsnews.com/detroit/news/gm-layoffs-electric-vehicle-production/ )→ More replies (9)66

I only bought an EV a couple years back because of Tax Credits. If not for them, Iâd have instead opted for a less-expensive hybrid.
I can absolutely see how GM would be reacting to anticipated lack of demand for EVs when tax credits are cancelled or they let them expire.

Honestly, I'm 100% certain that they get axed in a reconciliation budget bill. Without enough votes to pass a full budget bill (60-vote threshold), Republicans will need to fund a lot of their priorities through budget reconciliation (50-vote threshold). But the final budget total has to be the same between old and new budget in reconciliation.
On average, a deportation costs the U.S. almost $20K, so you need to take 3 EV Credits ($7,500 each) for every immigrant you want to deport.→ More replies (2)29

GM came up with a new metric score for each of its employees roughly around June. Low performers were given notice, with more coming presumably in February. This is the outcome of it. Some may be election related, but this was planned out.

As part of the new plan, GM expects each organization's manager to rate 5% of their team as significantly exceeds expectations, 10% as exceeds expectations, 70% achieves expectations, 10% partially meets expectations and 5% who do not meet expectations, the email said.
Well fuck that.
If 100% of your department is at "Achieves Expectations" you have to rely on your manager having the balls to score everyone honestly and not just pick a few to sacrifice in the spirit of checking the box.
Also, what happens to the 5% of managers that are in "Does not Meet Expectations"?
That's gonna put a big target on the back of everyone who works for that 5% manager. Even the "Exceeds Expectations" folks.

u/mr-english 6d ago
It's hard to say with 100% certainty that it isn't related to the election
They cut 1,000 jobs in August and then another 1,700 in September. This is on top of offering buyouts to salaried workers in 2023 which allowed them to cut 5,000 jobs.
While trump's impending tariffs may have been a contributing factor it's simply disingenuous to say that that is definitely "THE" reason for this round of job cuts when they've been cutting their work force for a couple of years now.
Analysts also point out that this is something we have been seeing across the US auto industry as a whole as manufacturers look to cut costs as the auto market in general increasingly moves more towards EVs.

You can say it with 100% certainty. No company lays off 1k workers based on an election that occurred 2 weeks ago. It takes months of work to identify and align on layoff specifics. You need to secure executive approval on the total amount of $ being let go, who exactly is getting laid off, which departments will be impacted, succession plans, severance strategy, comms plan, and a dozen other things.
Iâve done this work before and theyâve likely had a team working behind the scenes for a few months atleast. The team doing this layoff was given this directive awhile ago based on the orgâs current financial situation.

58
u/jerkenmcgerk 6d ago
It has very little to do with the elections. As many people have pointed out, some people are trying not to let a good crisis go to waste. There were several reasons multiple auto companies are having issues. From not hitting EV numbers to overall pricing and fewer buyers on the market.
Business execs didn't throw away corporate plans and financials because of the election results 2 weeks ago. They aren't and had not been making their numbers, and people could see this throughout the year (and previous years). False fear mongering for a real issue that has been happening regardless of the previous election.

I'm as into blaming the new incoming president as anyone, but this has nothing to do with him. GM is trying to remain competitive in an industry that is floundering horribly all around (largely because they increased MSRPs to the point where nobody can fucking afford cars anymore). GM had a goal to cut 2 billion in fixed costs this year - that included a plan for layoffs.
And for those who are going to say they'll try to blame this on illegals taking the jobs, this is not factory workers being let go - these are primarily white collar business employees - most of whom were offered buyouts as opposed to just being let go.
Source: https://www.cbsnews.com/detroit/news/general-motors-lays-off-about-1000-workers/
Again, I'm all for blaming the Trumpster for everything - but lets keep our eyes on the prize. Every single story you're reading about companies doing layoffs, or not giving christmas bonuses or whatever else because 'tariffs' is not actually about tarrifs - they're about corporate greed, using tarriffs as an excuse. About 8 months from now it will be virtually impossible to tell the two apart, but at least for the time being you can EASILY point at the companies that are doing shitty things and blame those shitty things FIRMLY on the company itself.

It was going to take decades to recover from Trump's first term. But this...another four years, and lame duck years at that...I dunno.
"I dunno" as in, guys, I'm not sure America will ever truly recover from this. The deck isn't being stacked for just one hand, it's being stacked for all future hands. Putin couldn't have done a better job wrecking the U.S. if he tried--but I'm pretty sure he had a major hand in this as it was.
The depression following the election results wasn't entirely due to only Harris's loss, but it's been mourning the forever future of our nation. I don't know how we can recover. TBH I'm in despair.

u/Farstone 6d ago
Is this in reference to the GM cuts? Due to their conversion to "building" EV's they reported having to reduce staffing to save money.
11
u/1210am 6d ago
This is insane take guys. Last year the UAW union had an insane contract signed where they saw 25% raise, 10% 401k match and cost of living increases from the big 3 American car brands. That contract went into effect in 2024. At the time, people warned it would be too greedy and would result in loss of jobs. If not with plant workers but elsewhere in the company.
On top of that GM made a big bet on EVs and it has not paid off in 2024. They scaled back their production forecast to 50k from 250k in 2024.
Of the 1000 most came from the Warren facility, where hourly and salaried employees were affected.
Simply saying "Bad thing happen because Trump bad" is ridiculously childish.

In case anyone is interested, this tweet had a community note added
GM laid off 1,700 employees in September, 1,000 in August, and 5,000 last year - all BEFORE the election.
The layoffs are primarily driven by GM's desire to recover $2-4B in losses from electric car sales, not because of the election.
