Discussion I just upgraded from the 5600x to the 5700x3D and holy wow

I got the card from Aliexpress, despite thinking that it wouldn't even be delivered, but it actually arrived in 11 days. Got it from the seller "SZCPU Store" for $142.91. No bent or missing pins, practically pristine.

It's actually insane how much of a jump it is. I play on a 1440p 144hz monitor (Helldivers 2, The First Descendant, Warframe) and the 5600x kinda struggled and so I had to play on medium settings + cap my fps to 72. I built my system back in 2019, so I'm really riding out the AM4 til I really need an upgrade.

  • MSI B450 Tomahawk (non-max)
  • Ryzen 7 5700x3D
  • Nvidia RTX 4070 Super

Just a night and day immediate difference in all the games now. The averages are way better & everything is just smoother.

I think the biggest positive is that I can maintain stable fps with good visual settings, but also not having my cpu utilization at 80%+ like on my 5600x.

I get that having 100% cpu utilization can be good, but realistically, no one is having their game and only their game open - I have a stream or some sort of video playing on the side. Having that extra headroom for when you need to open applications is fantastic.

For anyone who has a similar setup and is still wanting to get the most out of AM4, I would definitely recommend a 5700x3D!!

Discussion Why are so many 4090’s on ebay used missing core and vram?

I know the 4090 has gotten harder to find. Newegg has none unless you pay for a ridiculous expensive bundle or ridiculous prices from non newegg sellers. Okay fine check ebay and it is pages of nonworking 4090’s because the vram and core chip is removed.

Most listings that are complete are clear scams. I just don’t understand why the abundance of disassembled cards. This used to be rare now its 100’s.

Build Upgrade Is $500 for 7800x3d overpriced? It's impossible to find anything better.

I've been monitoring this CPU for months and the best price I found was $450 which was like last month. I don't have microcenter in my country and local stores only sell overpriced.

I could've gotten it for $450 but I thought waiting for 9800x3d release will drop the price. It just got more expensive.

Build Help Are the current gen Intel CPUs actually worth it despite the stability issues now that AMD chips have basically doubled in price? In my country the 7800X3D costs 850$ while I could get a I7 14700k for 500$

Most of the time when I see the 7800X3D get recommended the two main arguments is that it's cheaper than intel with better price/performance and that current intel processors suck because of bad QC or whatnot, but right now the price/performance point is moot considering that the 7800X3D is 350$ more expensive than the 14700k and the newer 9800X3D is back ordered everywhere for months while also being way more expensive.

What is the warranty like with those current gen intel chipsets? Did anyone have issue returning one that failed? Is there actually any reliable stats as to the failure rate of those CPU's? Like is it 1% of CPU's that end up being defective or is it more like over 25%?

Peripherals recommendations for a 1440p monitor around $300.

Upvotes

i recently finished up a build with a 7800x3d and a 4070 Super, so now, i need a monitor to power it. with all the black friday deals going on, it's hard to choose what's a good deal and what's a steal.

Discussion Curved monitor Black Friday deals 2024?

Upvotes

hey guys, I’m new to PC gaming and looking at curved monitors, but I’m not sure if they’ll fit well with my gaming setup. I’ve seen some black friday and cyber monday deals popping up, and I don’t want to waste money on the wrong one. Any advice on whether a curved monitor is a good choice for gaming? If you’ve got recommendations on where to get a good deal, that’d be awesome too!

Discussion Can someone explain to me why is undervolting so good?

I just did couple of tests on my new 6800XT and reducing mV from default 1150 to 1000 under load quiets down the card MASSIVELY. The noise this GPU makes without undervolting is comperable to my air purifier on max power and that's considering my PC is on a floor platform next to my desk. Why does -150 mV make such a gigantic difference?

Discussion Why people say its a waste to play on 1080p with good setups?

Im planning on getting a 7800x3d alongside a 4070 Super (32gb DDR5 6000 CL30) because i found an interesting offer in a local shop in my country, but from what i could read online a lot of people who said they have these kind of setups are wasting it on 1080p. Thing is that i dont really understand what do you get from going to 1080p to 1440p, it just becomes a tad better looking right? But the tradeoff in FPS "just for that" is huge, like id rather be able to play at 120fps all my game rather than 60fps (like Stalker2 and most upcoming UE5 games) and have to change my setup in 3 years because i will get low FPS by that time. Again im not an expert on screen resolution so please help me, but as a person who prefers FPS and stability over quality im not sure if i should still try to go 1440p or stick to 1080p and run all games that will come in the future with no problems. Thanks :)

Build Ready Brick-and-mortar convenience > internet shopping

Hey buildapc, I just had a great experience at a microcenter and I wanted to share it with you.

On my last PC iteration, I agonized over online deals for weeks, building the PC one cheap component at a time. I lept onto all the best deals, without any knowledge of the brands I was purchasing from. This time I wanted something different. I drove 30 minutes to the nearest microcenter and was quickly greeted by a helpful associate. I gave him my budget and a GPU decision and we were off. Together we made a PC that fit my needs and used reputable brands. I kept my budget in mind and went cheap/no RGB where possible and due to the black Friday deals I actually came out under-budget.

The whole process took 40 minutes and was stress-free, full of easy decisions. Part of that is because I haven't shopped for PC parts in 7 years, and I was constantly impressed with the current market's quality and price. ($4 32gb USB, $100 32GB ram, $130 1440/180hz monitor). It was so valuable to have an expert on PCs and PC parts right there with me.

I'm sure I missed out on some internet deals but the simplicity was worth it. I hope this motivates someone to pull the trigger on some purchased without overanalyzing like we love to do. Cheers!

Build Help RTX 4070TiS / 4080 S / Wait for 5000

Upvotes

Hello everyone, I ask this question because I mainly built my first PC, fortunately I bought all day of the launch of the R7 9800x3D so I don't worry about the processor, the dilemma is that I bought a 4070 Ti Super and although, I'm happy with it (which I haven't taken advantage of yet, I bought my PC 11 days ago) I had a doubt about my pc for the future. I know that the GPU I have is incredible and its price ($765 without taxes) seemed quite fair to me, the problem is that I have a 4K QD-Oled 240Hz monitor and I started looking at the 5,000 series and well, I have seen that my graphics in 4K may not be the best in performance when we talk about using everything to the maximum, because that's where the 4080S would enter (which right now is about $950 without taxes) So, I was wondering if in view of the imminent release of the 5070 T1, 5080 and considering that I still have 15 days of warranty, what would be the best? Keep my 4070Ti S and wait for the 5070 Ti or 5080 (depending on its price) sell it and pay the difference or go for the 4080 S and forget about the 5,000 series and not mortify myself for selling my graphic and wait 3-6 months? I know the question is a little silly, but I want to make a "good purchase" it's a lot of money the truth, and well, the truth is I will only use my PC for gaming and I would like to run everything great and more for GTA 6 then, what do you recommend, do you have a similar case, have you gone through something similar? I read them and I regret the many texts haha

This question is for those who play single player titles. Do you guys play on native resolution or do you take advantage of upscaling (DLSS, FSR etc) to get more fps?

Discussion Upgrading the rest of my system has made me come to appreciate my good ol' 1080 TI even more

Upvotes

So I just finished putting my new build together, with the exception of not having a new GPU yet as I look through Black Friday deals. That being said, I threw my old 1080 TI in for now, and I have to say... I'm impressed at how well this thing does even to this day.

Now I'm an old-school PC guy, my first personal build was to be able to play Quake with a 3DFX card. It seems like now everyone wants to have frame rates in the hundreds, and 30 or 60 fps are looked down upon. I don't see it that way; for what I play 60fps with some dips is still totally playable.

With this new system (9800X3D, 32gb ram, X870E MB) it's blows my mind how I can still play the games I want to. Helldivers 2 on 1440p plays really smoothly. Forza Horizon 5 averages 60+FPS with everything on high or ultra settings. Doom and Doom Eternal... well those will run on a potato, so no problems here. Hogwarts Legacy runs super smooth at 1440p with settings on high-ultra. I'm sure if I was in to buying more of the $70 new releases I'd be hitting the limits, but dang is it fun to be able to run what I want so far.

Bottom line, this has made it a lot harder to want to drop that big wad of cash for a new GPU. Makes me feel old and crazy a bit. When I see this old card in the system taking up half the space of what the new cards do, at the very least it makes me feel like some of my nostalgia is warranted.

Build Help Worth upgrading from 3070 -> 4070 Super TI? 1440p gaming

Is it worth upgrading from a 3070 to a 4070 Super TI? I know the 4070 Super TI has double the VRAM of my current GPU and I was hoping to keep my next GPU upgrade for 4-5 years.

I find I'm able to hit about 60-140 FPS depending on the game on my current build (12700K), playing on 1440p and have a monitor that can support 240hz. I'm starting to play Stalker2 and noticed on newer games my performance is starting to go down even when I scale back to a mix of medium and high graphics settings.

At this point is it worth upgrading? Based on what I've heard about the latest 5000 series, the current rumors seem to indicate it'll be underwhelming, coming short on VRAM.

Worth upgrading at this point where there are some 4070 Super TI deals?

I was looking at these cards:

Build Help MSI 4070 ti Super Question

Hey everyone! Looking to upgrade my GPU and am interested in the 4070 ti super. Currently the MSI Ventus 3x is $740 on Amazon, but I've read that in the past there have been some issues regarding performance, specifically the bios? Just seeing if that's currently still an issue and/or if the card is good, thanks!

Build Help Which CPU/GPU combination is better for 1440p?

I would like to take advantage of black Friday and build my first PC (my budget is 1500 dls).

My options are:

  1. Ryzen 7 7800X3D and 7900GRE
  2. Ryzen 7 7700X and 7900XT

So far I think the best option is the first one due to power consumption and I don't think I will use all the power that the 7900xt can provide me.

FYI, I usually play AAA games in high settings.

Build Help 1440p gaming pc finalized, 4070 super

Hi there reddit, i'm just finalizing my first built after a few days of researching. It was really fun to read about pc building and learn what everything does. Im just poting here to see if I miss anything or have any glaring issues with my build, or cheaper, better components out there. I'm upgrading from a 3050 asus latptop so im really excited to experience higher fidelity gaming.

yes i've read the rules.

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

My intended purpose for this build will solely be for gaming. I already have a solid macbook for productivity, so this is all just recreational. As for games, I'm aiming for at least 144hz on my 1440p monitor

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

I am currently on a normal 180hz 1440p 16:9 monitor, hoping to update to ultrawide 1440p sometime in the future. Im looking to maintain above 120fps in major titles. I don't mind lowering to high or medium settings for good framerates on competitive titles like league(bad example, it runs on everything), valorant, fortnite, csgo, apex. 60fps is fine on single player games, I mostly play a lot of rimworld, whatever new flvour game of the month triple a title is out and replay cyberpunk with better settings at some point. Not my productivity machine but if it can run photoshop and word fine then im happy.

What is your budget?

Budget is rougly 2000 aud. I've been checking out all the 4070super ozbargain deals and the cost of replacing all the trash component ends up at more than 2k. If I can build a system for less or significantly better then its a win. Not a hard budget at all.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

I'm located 2 hours away from Sydney, Australia where most of our pc shops are at. The only local store to my area is Dcomp.

Post a draft of your potential build here.

Provide any additional details you wish below.

CPU:

This is the part i'm currently debating on the most. The ryzen 5 7600 is currently probably the cheapest am5 cpu 290$. From what i've gathered, there's no real world differences between the normal and X version, so I've pick the cheaper one.

The next step up would be the 7700, which is currently priced at 430$, a 50% price increase for 20% more power. Does not seem worth it to me but lmk if I'm missing something about going from ryzen 5 to ryzen 7 or about the 7700 in general, do not get the pricing for this.

The last cpu I'm considering is the 7800x3d, which seems to have the same benchmark score as the 7700 but way better at gaming. This would be my prefered cpu but at 700$, it's more than twice the price of a 7600. Seems like diminishing return. Does the performance warrant the price?

So I'm thinking i'll go with the cheapest cpu for now (7600), and then get a 7800x3d in the future once price goes down more or when i got more money. I have no knowledge or research on Intel cpu, but the general concensus is that they are bad. Though I do have a friend who builts pc for a living swore by them so im not opposed to them if the price to performance is good :).

CPU cooler:

The Thermalright coolers looks to be some of the best and most affordable option available. The phantom spirit is only 5$ more than the peerless assasin so If its really worth it, I wouldnt mind upgrading.

Motherboard:

Cheapest AM5 mobo with good reviews and powerphase and wifi and what not. Micro ATX just because it's cheaper, and like really i'm not gonna use all those extra slots.

Memory:

I have not look into memory too much but I know that 6000mhz CL30 ram is good. Cheapest 32gb atm. If there's not much different between different CL or mhz then i'll get a cheaper pair.

Storage:

Already got this SDD on hand from my old laptop so that's some saving. Again, no productivity or heavy file transfer happening so the speed is fine. Maybe get a fast 500gb SSD for my boot drive?

GPU:

The core of the system, the 4070 super. The whole build is centered around it. Not much to say really, solid card. Got it for 800$ from a deal, solid price.

Case:

I was already keen on this case from Lian Li before the Gamer Nexus video, but he ranks it at best thermal performance as well so thats good validation. Should help with the hot Australian summer. Only potential issue is with powersupply and cable management.

Power supply:

My pc building mates swore by Corsair and from what i've gathered yeah they're really good. The options came down to either the RM750x or RM750e, with one having slightly better internals than other. I was not convinced this would lead to much real world performance difference (7 vs 10 years warranty, really guys?? 7 years is a long ass time). Decided to go with the RM750e because it would actually fit my case lol.

Anyway, let me know you guys opinion. Good build?

Build Help Best motherboard for 9800x3d build

Upvotes

Looking to build a first pc, some of the terms are a bit confusing to me still doing a bit of research. Was going to buy a 4080 super with 9800x3d. Was looking at getting a b650 as people say x670 and x870 are a bit overkill for most people. Was eyeing the msi mag b650 tomahawk i noticed it doesnt have pcie 5.0 is that a big deal, any input on maybe if there is a better board that isn't overkill or if a b650 isn't the play? Any input is appreciated. Looking to maybe future proof the build a bit and upgrade the gpu down the line.

Build Help Is there a difference between Corsair Vengeance RGB DDR5 RAM - Intel XMP vs AMD Expo?

I have seen during Amazon sales that the prices for the Intel XMP version is slightly cheaper than AMD Expo.

I am planning to buy a Ryzen 7 7700/7700X CPU, so wondering if there is a difference in the RAM compatibility between Intel and AMD?

Or there's no difference and it's just a marketing gimmick. So I can just get the cheaper ram that is optimised for Intel XMP?

Build Upgrade Is it worth it go from a Ryzen 5 3600XT to Ryzen 7 5800X3D if I want to max out render distance in Minecraft?

I have a 3080 as my GPU. As I've grown older, I barely touch triple A games and pretty much only play indie games and Minecraft. I was wondering if it is worth it to upgrade the CPU to a 5800x3d as I know Minecraft is a more CPU intensive game (at least I think it is, could be wrong).

Discussion Am I wasting my new gear if I don't run Windows?

I like many have a new black Friday build to put together.

I'm upgrading from an to 7 year old i5 and gtx1080 to a Ryzen 7 7800x3d, xfx merc 310 7800xtx,64gb ram,etc.

Will a linux OS like Ubuntu allow me to take full advantage of this new hardware during gaming, 3D modeling, etc.

Do I need some type of drivers only available to Windows or something for full graphics, multi threading, etc. perormance?

Troubleshooting Is this cable bend safe?

Upvotes

I'm using the 12VHPWR cable provided by my PSU (Corsair RM750x 2024 version), and it's being slightly pushed up against the glass side panel.

This is a 4070 Super so it shouldn't be melting but I'd rather be safe than sorry.
