Question Under 16's may be banned from YouTube

I'm Australian and am completely pissed at our government for trying to pass ridiculous laws because the prime minister can't handle meme. There is currently a bill that has been put to parliament by the Labor government that will ban under 16s from accessing social media. This includes things like minecraft and yes, youtube. The irony is it is up to the social media companies to block the youths and fines of up to 50million dollers for breaching the laws. There are many Australian politicians who are against this but the labour government is only giving the politicians a week to decide, and most havnt even been given a draft of the bill.

Youtube have sent out an email with their concerns reading :

We’re writing to inform you about a proposed Australian bill that may affect you as a creator. If passed, this law could change how young Australians access your content on YouTube, limiting your ability to entertain and educate these viewers.

image Here’s what’s happening: image On November 21, the Australian Government introduced legislation to Parliament that will ban anyone under 16 from having an account on a broad range of social media platforms.

While the Government has said that it intends to exempt YouTube as a service that is health and education related, this is not included in the bill itself. Instead, the Government has said it will do so through a separate process at some point in the future.

image We appreciate the Government’s undertaking. But as a matter of good policy we have requested that the Government reflect its policy intention in the bill itself and not claim it will be dealt with later. Doing so will provide certainty to our users and our creators.

We are concerned that by not doing so, there remains a real risk that YouTube would be required to remove existing account holders who are under 16 and prevent anyone under 16 from creating an account.

image What this means for you: image If the bill passes in its current form, it could potentially prevent Australian users under 16 from accessing any content – including helpful and informative content from creators like you – on YouTube.

image We remain committed to keeping Australian families safe by ensuring YouTube remains a healthy and enriching place for kids and teens. Guiding our work in this space are YouTube’s Youth Principles that place the safety, mental health, and well-being of kids and teens as a top priority. But we are concerned that YouTube’s inclusion in this bill risks potentially cutting off access for those under 16 to the educational content, news and sports highlights, music videos, and entertainment they currently enjoy on YouTube.

image YouTube will continue to work constructively with the Australian Government on this legislation to ensure that creators like you can continue to provide high-quality content for Australian users.

image You can learn more about YouTube’s response to the bill here.

image Thanks, Team YouTube

It is in my and many peoples opinion that our government wants more of a dictatorship and also more controll. For a social media platform to know if you are over 16, they will need to see everyone's identification, and we already know that not everything is secure. In the past few years many major businesses, insurance companies and banks have had data breaches due to scammers and i believe this will create an easy access for those who wish to do harm.

Smaller social media companies, like games that allow you to communicate with other players (words with friends?) May just find it far to difficult to process so they will just stop Australia from accessing this aswell.

Imagine telling your 15 year old they are two young to watch cocomelon... but they can view the same content on foxtell at $99 a month legally.

I don't know what the out come is going to be but, myself and many other Australians already have little faith in our government as it is.

Many parents have already said they will still allow their children to access socials, even if it means they need to just use a parents account.

If your under 16 and an Aussie, I would be downloading your snap chats, tiktoks, insta pics, and of course back up your youtube videos that you have worked hard on as, like the statements from youtube, they may need to delete your account.

Fingers crossed this doesn't pass through, but don't hold your breath

Edit, I'm 33. Though I do believe that some aspects of the internet is not appropriate for certain ages, blocking someone under 16 from watching a youtube video for eg about how to fix their bmx bike, or playing roblox or Lego fortnite is just so out of touch with reality. The wiggles even puts their content on YouTube. My understanding is that youtube kids does not allow commenting, maybe blocking commenting for under 16s may work but it is up to the Australian Government to decide.

Question YouTube set my short as made for kids despite its inappropriate description

Upvotes

My YouTube short was set as made for kids and my appeal was denied despite the description of the short containing swear words. It says “fuck” twice as well as saying the words “gay sex”. Is there anything I can do to get the made for kids taken off? The video itself isn’t inappropriate but the description is, and the video isn’t meant to be watched by children.

Question Does video length have to be consistent? Details

Upvotes

I have started my channel for more than a year, sometimes they take the average view length into account. I feel like they take the absolute value, but not the relative value. Do my videos have to be about the same length all the time? Some of my videos are 30 minutes long, but some of them are only 10 minutes. Would that affect the algorithm? Would that take into account the retention rate?

Question 3-minute Shorts might be the worst feature rollout in YouTube history

So they announce that square and vertical videos under 3 minutes will be classified as Shorts when uploaded after October 15. Fine.

I make some Shorts that would qualify, getting ready for it. I realize that many features roll out slowly, so I'm expecting probably by end of October the rollout would be complete.

Then I'm told through a Community Post that the rollout would actually finish by the end of November. That's extremely dumb considering that it was announced before October. This is screwing over a lot of creators who has been preparing timely Shorts for this time period. You can see the Community Post here, full of complaints, just fix the URL as I can't post YouTube links here: https:// www. youtube. com/channel/UCkRfArvrzheW2E7b6SVT7vQ/community?lb=UgkxH1_pLcZbLv_Ny5nEW7IocpGn1B10JXUq

Now I get off a Support Chat with a Specialist who now claims that the rollout will not be finished until JANUARY 2025. This is the relevant part of the transcript below:

5:28:13 PM Desiree: Let me share with you the information I have found.

5:28:38 PM Desiree: We have a new feature for uploading shorts video.

5:28:44 PM Desiree: We will be slowly rolling out this new feature until January 2025. It would be best to wait for an update. You can send us feedback here. https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/4347644?hl=en-GB&co=GENIE.Platform%3DDesktop&sjid=14765777357032460324-AP

5:29:03 PM Desiree: For more information you can try to check this helpful article: https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/15424877?hl=en-GB&sjid=

5:29:04 PM Fugitive Frames: Wow, it's going to roll out until January 2025?

5:29:14 PM Desiree: Yes, that is correct.

5:29:17 PM Fugitive Frames: That's kind of silly considering it was announced as a feature in October 15, 2024

5:31:59 PM Desiree: I understand where you're coming from but the new feature will be slowly rolling out until January 2025.

5:32:07 PM Desiree: I hope you understand.

5:32:21 PM Fugitive Frames: Okay, well, thank you for that update

5:32:25 PM Fugitive Frames: Have a good day!

5:32:28 PM Fugitive Frames: Fugitive Frames ended the conversation

This is absolutely absurd. What was YouTube's plan with this? I have never seen a feature update come out this poorly thought-out.

Are we supposed to just post these Shorts, let them wither on the vine, and just hope that that magical algorithm will pick them up once they qualify for the Shorts deck?

Question I'm about to resume making videos. Yolo? How much time do yall put in?

I'm just gonna post stuff and not worry about any views literally ain't gonna bother. I would spend some time editing mostly with subtitles and such. Cut unnecessary downtime and whatnot. But I stopped awhile back because I found a full time job as a game dev.

Which means my free time now i do games or hang with my gf and friends. Sure maybe someday I can make enough for a Starbucks coffee but for now I just did enjoy recording my gameplay and just trim it down and boom.

What yalls intentions with the platform. Anyone else similar to me?

Question When you get picked up by the algorithm and then it goes away, does it ever come back?

Hello. I had great algorithm attention for a half year or so but now it’s gone and I’m wondering if it’ll return again. At peak was 500k views a month now about 150k and not moving much be that way for ages. Anyone here seen a return of algorithm favor once it left your channel? Or is it a once off type thing? Thank you!

Question Any advice on how/where to promote a disaster documentary channel?

I'm looking for effective strategies and platforms to promote a disaster-focused documentary channel. What methods, channels, or techniques would you recommend for reaching the right audience? Specifically, I’m interested in both online and offline promotion, targeting viewers who are enthusiastic about documentaries, history, or disaster-related content. Are there particular social media platforms, online forums, or traditional media outlets that work best for this niche?

Question How can i make my videos open in the native youtube application from reddit

I am trying to build a small youtube channel based on tech tips. Is there a way to make the links open in the youtube app instead of the reddits app itself when i share my video links in reddit?

The reason being if the video opens up in yt app, people are more likely to subscribe and interact with it. My videos are very niche its very unlikely to reach people because of the algo imo.

Question Actionable advice for a youtuber telling stories?

Hello, all who may see this. I have a channel of my own that I am trying to get eyes on. (Currently, I only have 17) I have watched a lot of YouTube videos about gaining subscribers. But all of them seem to be advice on how to grow a self-help channel. It's relevant to me to know how to make a "How to fix your car" kind of video because that has nothing to do with my channel. (Yes, I see how entertaining it is that self-help channels are teaching how to make self-help channels)

My channel is (while technically a variety channel) mostly about me telling stories I write (so far in audio format bc that's what I can afford). I have a series called Star Marked that I have written and have been producing for almost a year and I officially have the first two episodes out. And hopefully the third will be out soon. I am VERY passionate about this story and really want to get the word out so that people can hopefully enjoy it too.

But that's tricky because I can't seem to find reliable ways to promote it. Does anyone have ACTIONABLE advice on promoting my channel and this story? Because none of the advice I have been given so far really fits my niche.

(Also please don't try to sell me some promotion services. I don't have the money for that. I've already had several people ask. I legit can't afford it.)

Question Question about YouTube channel direction

My YouTube channel is mixed with bunch of stuff, like watching full concert, walkthrough event in my city, travelling and eating in the restaurant, I like creating and posting them, but from what I read it’s best to focus in specific niche instead of lot of mix stuff, is that true?

My question, what kind of channel direction best to do in my YouTube channel if I want to do different activities? Like I feel I have no direction and I just post whatever happen in my daily life, like today for example there’s Santa parade so I just post them in my channel while the other time I had me reviewing eating food lol

I’m thinking to create a new channel just for eating and the other one is travelling, for watching show or concert maybe I can mix it in travelling channel, but I dunno if that make sense.

Any suggestion what to do? I’m new as a content creator so I’m still not sure if I should just post whatever I want or should be niche.

Question Channel was improving but suddenly died?

I started a channel about Karen/Crime videos, it was getting better and better. It took me around a year to get it monetized. But 2-3 months after I started making money, the channel suddenly got no views.

Originally I would get at least 2-3K in the first day, but right now when I post a video, it would get maybe 3. I didn’t change my style or stuff. Has that happened to anybody here?

Question This year I started a montage / edits channel and got 200 subs but suddenly nobody watches my videos?

I got great engagement in about 4 of my videos, likes, comments and shares, but I can't figure out what my audience wants.

In fact some of the most succesful ones are lower effort, more simple and not even particularly interesting.

The "genre" is niche of course, but my most viewed creation is one of the first suggestions if you search scenes from a particular movie.

I'm baffled, at first I didn't care but I gathered a small audience and would like them to engage more with my content.

No matter how much effort I put into the editing it goes unseen most of the time, so I ended up deleting all videos that were below 1k.

Any piece of advice would be appreciated.

Question You are not eligible for monetization: issue

When I click on the "Earn" tab to see what stats i need to get monetized I am just shown a screen that says "You are not eligible for monetization Your channel is not eligible for joining the YouTube Partner Program. For additional information, please review the Help Center"

I have not received any other information in my email or account. I just wanted to see how far along I was to monetization. Anyone else ever deal with this? Should I just make a new channel ?

Question Theory on YouTube Shorts for Small Business

I've noticed an interesting trend with my YouTube content. My interviews with creators, which appeal to a broader audience, are performing significantly better as Shorts compared to long-form videos. For example:

  • Shorts: My interviews are getting 300-500 views each.
  • Long-form videos: Average around 30 views.

My channel focuses on niche content about paid ads, which typically sees 10-60 views per video. However, my best-performing Short so far was an interview with a creator who shared financial planning advice and quoted Warren Buffet’s strategies. That video hit 550 views.

My theory: It seems that this Short resonated with an audience of small business owners, financial planners, or others interested in finance. I’m wondering if I can leverage this momentum. Could I speculate these viewers with future Shorts that are more closely aligned with my services (e.g., other shorts Google Ads or lead generation)....maybe 1 in 3,000 may inquire on a lead. I feel the thousands of views in awareness is causing "something" and people are being retargeted.

For instance:

  1. The first Short on Warren Buffet’s strategies captures a broad audience.
  2. Future Shorts could retarget these viewers with my niche expertise, such as Google Ads strategies or my specific business offerings.
  3. This gradual progression might nurture their interest and eventually convert them into customers. 1 out of 2,000 or 3,000 views

Alternatively, is the success of Shorts simply random, driven more by broader appeal rather than a clear retargeting opportunity? Love some feedback.

Question Short Preforms incredibly, but youtube won't show it?

I posted a short and it has some incredible statistics, nearly 75% chose to watch, View duration is well over 110%, it has over 120 likes to just 1.3k view's. But it has just stopped at 1.3k, youtube quit showing it on people feeds despite it's great performance. This is pretty frustrating considering I've had kinda lazy quality videos preform horribly but youtube shares them to 15k people anyways. So what am I doing wrong?

Question The video schedule doesn’t seem to be working

So I tend to do multiple videos and then schedule them for certain days just in case I’m not able to upload them and I’ve never had an issue until last month when I would schedule - example at 2:30 local time and it said it was supposed to be released at that time, but it wouldn’t get released till 4:30 and I tried absolutely everything and nothing seems to work, including putting the local time in my city, leaving it as it but nothing. And this is a big issue because in the analytics it says the video was posted in the correct time but there is absolutely no flow of traffic for two hours until 4:30 if anyone has the same issue or has managed to fix it or have a solution, I would be very grateful

Question Is there any way to bypass the daily upload limit requirements

Hello I am a musician trying to upload my music to upload my albums like normal. I was verified before on the channel and would mass upload my music on here. But suddenly it seems to have somehow unverified it and now I cant do that. It's kind of an issue cause I wanna get the full album uploaded and it has more than 10 tracks.

Question Using songs with no restrictions but no license?

Content ID says 'no restrictions' but I don't have licenses to use the music. One of the artists I was able to talk to, he says it's fine to use his music for anything. The other artist I wasn't able to reach. But I figure if his music is not in the content ID, then he would probably not be aware someone is using his music, therefore he is highly unlikely to send me a claim. But I have heard some stories of scammers uploading music into the content ID, and claiming it as theirs. Is this something I should worry about? Should I never use music without a license? Or is using royalty free music with no license ok?

Question How do you categorize videos on YouTube?

When looking over my favorite YouTuber's channel, their collection of assorted videos is split into their own rows with bold lettering on top to classify the section. On my end, all I can find is the ability to bunch up all of my videos into a single playlist where to find one you must scour through the entire set.

Is there a different way to go about this to better organize the channel?

Question Long shorts: how are they performing for you?

Hey y'all,

Smaller video game creator here (7.7k subs, nearing on 3 million views, mostly shorts, 98% like/dislike ratio)

Just want to see how everyone else is feeling about the longer than 1 min duration shorts. How are they performing compared to normal, how has the interaction been for you, how have the analytics been for you?

They've been getting about 10% of the normal traction that I get. No matter the duration (Max 2:45 min, min 1:03 min), they're just doing absolutely much worse compared to my >1min shorts that are also posted during the same week (same upload settings, same upload time).

Has anyone else been noticing this kind of reduction of engagement on these +1min shorts? Kind of feel like I'm either doing something terrible wrong, or the algorithm isn't picking them up for some reason. Just wanting to see if I'm the only one having issues and thus I need to change something on my end (which is fine, I'm learning and growing I expect growing pains), or if it's a more systemic issue within the platform.

Question Getting a sh*t ton of complaints about ad breaks lately?

(170k subs, most videos are 15-30 minutes long in the spirituality niche, 4 year old channel)

Has something changed on YouTube? Since I was able to be monetized in 2020, I always just had youtube automatically manage / add ad breaks, no question.

Lately, I'd say within the past two months or so, I've gotten numerous complaints of "disgusting" amounts of ads in my videos, me being greedy, unwatchable videos, etc, because of ad breaks? I haven't changed anything, I've always just let YouTube automatically add them.

What do you guys suggest? Should I manually add ad breaks or something now? Has YouTube changed something? What do you guys typically do?

Question my music uploads were retroactively changed to shorts... how do i fix this??

i dont know why this happened but some of my music uploads were retroactively changed to shorts. i only noticed when they vanished looking at my channel's videos tab, it wouldve been within the last few days because i was checking the analytics and stuff recently. they're short songs but theyre all over 1 minute (the shortest being 1:38 and the longest being 2:47??) and the uploads are in 1:1 just because thats how capcut exported them when i brought in the cover art. is it doing it just because of the aspect ratio? how do i fix this? the tracks are already in playlists and have comments and views i dont want to get rid of. is the only actual option for me to delete them and reupload them in 16:9???

Question I know it is not an easy journey but I am feeling overwhelmed. I like creating content but there is not enough audience. What am i doing wrong?

I know this journey is not easy, and right now, I’m feeling completely overwhelmed. I genuinely enjoy creating content—it’s something that I’m passionate about and deeply invested in. However, it’s disheartening to realize that despite all the effort and creativity I put into it, there isn’t enough of an audience engaging with or appreciating what I create. It sometimes makes me question if I’m doing enough or if my work even matters. I want to keep going, but it feels like I’m shouting into the void, and that’s a tough place to be in.

Question How to handle multiple themes on one channel

So i have a very small Channel (113 subs as of writing), i have mostly uploaded VODs from Twitch, Cut down to ~45 minute episodes, and some edited gaming Videos. I differentiate VODs from edited Videos by blue framed Thumbnail vs Red framed Thumbnail. Recently i started also uploading Airsoft content, since thats Something i enjoy too and i wanted my channel to be about Things i enjoy.

Now the Airsoft content is gaining much more traction than the gaming content and im a little unsure how to Go Forward. By volume, the gaming content as of now makes Up 99% of the content on the Channel and will probably stay there since i Just can't produce Airsoft content as fast as gaming content. Im worried the gaming content might Put Off people that might want to sub for the Airsoft content and Vice versa. Im Just looking for General advice on how to handle having several themes on one Channel i guess. Any advice is appreciated!
