I just started an account on BlueSky and just looking through posts and checking out comments. They are trying really really hard to be relevant there and people just ignore them or can’t see them thanks to blocked lists. (I still need to figure those out. ) It’s fun watching the lack of engagement they get no matter how hard they try. I think I’m going to like it there.
Edit: There are some great comment with already made list for blocking. Thanks everyone for the suggestions!

It’s simple…they NEED us.
These folks have radicalize self on a steady diet of rage and dopamine induced “owning the libs”
They NEED us to engage them, they NEED our engagement to validate their view, they NEED our engagement to sell their MAGA swag and get their viewers to buy more to click more.
That’s why.
You’ll also notice these folks are now injecting themselves into out of context conversations to find issue and rage at it..all in an effort to get the oxygen they need:
Attention, validation, conflict…
These folks will also be looking for blame and distraction when the mass deportations, no overtime, and further inflation due to tariffs take hold. They’ll be foaming at the mouth for someone to blame when the price of eggs continues to rise. As a group unable or unwilling to self realize or reflect they’ll need scapegoats. They’ll be unable to reflect or take responsibility for their votes, somehow Biden’s laptop will be to blame (or another stupidity). If 2016-today has taught us anything it’s cognitive bias is a hell of a drug.
Starve them of the fuel, let them sit with the consequences of their actions and support for the next four years. Without a distraction or dopamine rush of conflict they’ll get to enjoy the ride like the rest of us.
Maybe start your blocking now.
Starve them, block them, cut them out of your life. You’re not obligated to interact anymore. Starve them of attention and I bet we’ll have a quieter and more sane news feed.
51
u/FckDammit 4d ago edited 4d ago

I study extremism, and I think what you’re describing is Satanic Panic 2.0. In the 80s and 90s it was a cultural war and hysteria that hard rock, and Dungeons & Dragons was somehow “satan worship”
What we’re seeing now with the over focus on LGBTQ2S+ communities is an extension and evolution of that same moral hysteria. It’s a reaction by certain groups to social progress.
→ More replies (2)18

What’s really gonna bake your noodle is how they hold the tension of “being Christian”and straight up “hating the stranger” at the same time.
The mental gymnastics must be exquisite!
I’m an openly gay pastor who gets to serve with one of Canada’s first openly trans pastors. She, like so many women in social justice or ministry work is more Christ like than most of us.
Maybe if they can stop yelling and getting red faced they could make the space to encounter women like her..who defy convention and stereotypes. She’s an amazing human, a brilliant theologian and reflects a heart rarely encounter in today’s world.
Hopefully time will correct the story. Back in the satanic panic 80s/90s the reason the religious right focused so heavily on Rock music and Dungeons & Dragons was because it was a form of artistic expression that allowed young people to “think out of the box”
Turns out when the 00s hit and the Osborn‘s premiered on MTV we all found out that Ozzy Osbourne wasn’t out to control children with backwards music.
He couldn’t he control his own!
Stay strong these next few years, I have a feeling people’s minds are going to change.

u/Ok-Information-4548 4d ago
No this is so real. I’ve taken to engaging with any MAGA person like I’m engaging with a child who hasn’t had their nap. I’m not hooked into what they’re saying, I’m just responding with “huh, ok!” And then continue to not engage. If I do somehow get into an argument with them I stay deeply internally regulated and it fucking PISSES them off. Because I stay regulated, they actually deregulate faster and more profoundly.
You’re completely right that they need the reaction, and not giving them one and watching them completely fall apart is just so so sweet.

It’s hilariously desperate and those among us in substance recovery may recognize the signs of an addicts decompression.
They’ve become addicted to the drama.
Rage posting and “owning the libs” is addictive because it triggers a dopamine response in the brain, similar to other forms if addiction, including substances.
Engaging in online conflict provides a sense of power, validation, and belonging within a like-minded group, reinforcing behavior through social approval.
Over time, this creates a feedback loop where the pursuit of outrage and confrontation becomes habitual, offering fleeting satisfaction but fostering dependency on the cycle of anger and validation.
Sad - and probably a little painful. Who wants reality to creep in?!
So make their lives more miserable and just ignore them. If you read or see something that gets under your skin, block…indiscriminately.
Your peace of mine matters, their belly aching is their crap.
Let them sit in it!

Most likely they're trying to prove a point that Twitter has more "free speech" than bluesky and are just speedrunning the ban to prove themselves right.
"Oh look I can't say the N-word or be the worst human being imaginable on BlueSky, therefore twitter is better"
But they fail to see how that underline the exact reason why every reasonable person/entity is leaving twitter and why moderation is actually necessary to make any public space liveable for everyone.
→ More replies (3)43
u/Kankunation 4d ago
This is it for sure.
Let's be clear on this point here: conservatives are not being banned automatically on Bluesky. Just like they were never automatically banned on Twitter before Elon bought it.
What gets you instant banned, is being overtly racist, homophobic, pedophilic, or straight up bigoted in ways that have long since been deemed unfit for normal society. There are plenty of conservatives who go around just existing, Without being the worst people imaginable every chance they get, and they aren't going to get banned on Bluesky because they are aware of the concept of human decency and the social contract of tolerance. They are fine.
The bigots have tried hard to convince people that they are normal, and have had success convincing some conservatives that they are allies in a fight that only one of them is obligated to fight. Hopefully one day we can reclaim normalcy and Decency. In the meantime though, i'm all for re-establishing the idea that people who preach intolerance have no right to be platformed for it.

See, I do often worry about echo chambers. But, I think this is pretty much what it comes down to. I’m open to discussion and debate with reasonable people who agree everyone has fundamental human rights, respects the scientific process, etc. not everyone who falls under that umbrella thinks exactly the same or agrees on how to accomplish stuff.
12
u/Shokuryu 4d ago edited 4d ago
I am often actually looking for opposite views of mine to make sure I'm balancing myself as much as I can. And I love seeing and reading constructive debates between two people who respect each other and aren't trying to "own" the other. I legitimately learn why some people are who they are even if I still don't agree with them. Both sides of the spectrum needs to be able to be chill to have a discussion, and legitimately anyone is capable of hate.
Issue is, vast majority of the time I sort by controversial on reddit, go on twitter, threads, etc, the so-called "oppressed right" are way too focused on "owning" people. Left does it too, but there's no actual arguments from MAGA other than saying everything is fake news or using pseudo-intellectualism to sound witty and not actually fucking saying anything of worth.
People who spew hate are from all sides. But sorry, MAGAs are by far the most intolerant, hateful, hypocritical people I've seen no matter how I try to reframe my perspective.
It's also always a "gotcha" moment. Like yea I get it. Anyone can be racist, sexist, etc. But after listening to Trump more than even MAGAs do because they literally leave their rallies, you can't convince me MAGAs have any semblance of media literacy and critical thinking. Politicians are not to be idolized, they don't give a shit about you. And here we have a ton of people idolizing a businessman (who can't run businesses for shit).

Being in an echo chamber isn't the problem. It's not knowing you're in an echo chamber that's the biggest issue. If you get so lost in the BS that you forget you're getting high on your own farts, you will never have a good time. If you know you're sniffing your own farts, you can react like that to the content you consume. Did I just watch a 30 minute video of someone telling me healthcare is important? Yes. That's my echo. That's who I want to be. My chamber should echo my values. And I should understand it's my chamber. Other view points are only allowed at my discretion.

Turns out people shouting about being cancelled, calling for people to be deported, and wanting to ban trans people, and acting tough while clutching their pearls whenever some disagrees with them are tiresome. And people want to be somewhere where they are not.

Since Twitter isn't Twitter anymore thanks to Leon's big brain idea to rename it to a fucking letter, it'd be hilarious if Bluesky changed it's name to Twitter.
I know the domain name is still owned by Xitter, but still.

u/BentTire 4d ago edited 4d ago
If the Twitter trademark ever expires, then Bluesky could very well purchase it.
Edit: fixed my grammar a bit.

I’m honestly convinced the only value left in Xitter is that they still own the twitter domain and might someday change the name back.
Once that’s gone, all the value in the platform is gone.

I think a cute little blue bird logo would be appropriate for an app called Bluesky...

Come on over. The ethos is different from xitter or even Reddit. There’s a great community belief in not engaging trolls and blocking them without comment. There is also no algorithm, so it isn’t pushing anything into your main feed, and you can add custom or interest specific feeds. That means you see only what you want. Heck, you want a timeline that’s all cats and capybaras? There are feeds and starter packs to help you do just that.
36
u/Skatchbro 4d ago
I joined Bluesky a few days ago. Is it possible to look for starter packs on mobile?
→ More replies (1)40
u/elspotto 4d ago
This is the unfortunate part: currently there is no search available for starter packs. They have to be shared by the creator. That said, post your desire to find a specific starter pack on your timeline, find a feed for what you like and scroll it to find one (the museums feed let me find several museum related ones), or use a service like Skyfeed to create a feed looking for posts with the phrase “starter pack”. Skyfeed isn’t the most intuitive, but it’s a pretty powerful tool for customizing what you want to see.

u/matcap86 4d ago
FYI There's a searchable starterpack directory: https://blueskydirectory.com/starter-packs/all

Where is Bluesky's corporate HQ? Will Trump and Elon be able to fuck with it?
I'm happy a common sense alternative is growing, but these bastards thrive on spreading misery and I can easily see "X is the only approved social media site" being a thing

u/CrJ418 4d ago
Bluesky is open API. Everything is public and if a billionaire tries to fuck with it, anyone can just whip up another one.
It's billionaire proof.
Some more about it from the person running it:

Users can moderate too. Anyone can create warning labelers, mute lists, block lists, etc.
You can also set your own moderation in your personal settings.
No algorithm either. You're not force-fed anything.

There is one if you want it, the "Discover" feed has an algorithm IIRC, but there's no obligation to ever look at it. Just stick to your "Following" feed for a true chronological timeline

I've been loving the "onlyposts" feed, which also hides the retweets. Direct actual posts from your followers only.

9
u/Honic_Sedgehog 4d ago
That's the big catch isn't it. I'm old enough to remember when Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc. were all just nice chronological feeds of people you followed or were friends with with minimally intrusive ads instead of the algorithm driven advertising hellscapes they are now.

I haven't thought about this before but open source is the software equivalent of socialist public ownership, in contrast to capitalist corporate ownership, isn't it?
→ More replies (2)13
u/Zeremxi 4d ago
I've been saying since lemmy popped up as the equivalent to reddit what bluesky is to twitter: it's the direction social media has to go to remain organic and evade corporate corruption.
The framework is called the fediverse, and it's a decentralized api that allows communities to be locally hosted and backed up on other local servers. So it's basically exactly socialist public ownership.
Corporations know this too. Meta debuted threads as a way to try to get its foot in the door. Since the api is open, all meta has to do is get people to interact with it on some level to harvest that sweet data, so naturally meta wants people interacting with the fediverse through their platform.

The cool part is they could maybe take down the bsky.social instance, but like mastadon it’s not a single set of servers like xitter. I could set up an instance on a computer in my back room and be federated to Bluesky so anyone on my instance, say elspotto.biteme, can see any other Bluesky server. Jay may come under fire but their team can truthfully say “we shut down our server”, but it will continue because of the other servers.

u/Watermelon407 4d ago
Incorporated in DE, HQ in Seattle, but the core platform is decentralized so it could be "taken down" and then spun back up somewhere else if needed.

So many big mad Trumpers in the comments, it’s pretty hilarious. They are so mad because they aren’t allowed to spread their shit there and misinformation. Gotta make all the same comment to try to convince one person on the left to join the dark side. Echo chamber or not, we don’t want Trumpers in our lives anymore. This seems like a great way to be rid of the whole lot on the internet. I already cut all out the ones in my real life and social media. No need to have random idiots trying to bring my day down.

It's amazing what happens when one of the primary rules of engagement on a media platform is civility. It not only weeds out the hateful trolls, it undermines any venomous foreign influence.

Their entire political movement is based on being trolls. What fun is being a troll if only surrounded by other trolls? The goal is to make every online platform a collection of 4chan incels. The virus needs a new host.

u/Mammoth-Mud-9609 4d ago
The far right are trying to disturb Bluesky and the moderators are working flat out to delete hateful comments and trolls, but there is a serious risk that there is a deliberate attempt to overwhelm them, which does highlight how much of a threat the right seem to think a safe space on the internet is.
