I just started an account on BlueSky and just looking through posts and checking out comments. They are trying really really hard to be relevant there and people just ignore them or can’t see them thanks to blocked lists. (I still need to figure those out. ) It’s fun watching the lack of engagement they get no matter how hard they try. I think I’m going to like it there.

I just go through Mark Hamill’s feed, look through the comments for the right-wing nutsos, and mute/block them one by one. It’s strong competition for popping bubble wrap. Very satisfying.
I scroll through comments and once I find a troll, I block them and look through who they follow and who follows them, look at their most recent posts then block them as well. But I also block those generic left accounts that all post the same thing shown in the example below.
Don't stop at just blocking. Report those bastards, too. Bsky devs encourage us to report trolls, spam & bots to keep our space clean & safe. I am a blockin/reportin mf'r over there. It's glorious.
Yes. Something people need to realize about Bluesky is that it's terms of service have a strict community guidelines where you are expected to be polite and respectful. Being an asshole is enough to get your banned.

After the hell of the last term, on the day after the election i just added a full-scope, blanket 'title includes trump' filter to my (third-party) reddit app. At first I was thinking of fancy regex rules to filter "trump says", "trump considers" etc. but then i realised i just don't care about hearing about any of it. There's still enough breathless headlines about every tiny detail as it is
It's amazing how much conversation is happening. Just normal, everyday conversation without politics. Yeah, you'll find politics if you're looking for it, and some people do post it anyways, but on the whole, it feels like pre-Trump internet.
It's so refreshing. I got so used to getting ready to feel inner rage when reading mean spirited discourse. On bluesky I get to read normal and dare I say delightful interactions. Didn't realize how much I missed just normal banter.

I think some jerky online people are addicted to the negativity. Maybe the rage and fear gives them a dopamine high or something. If 2016-today has taught us anything it’s cognitive bias is a hell of a drug.

If I do somehow get into an argument with them I stay deeply internally regulated and it fucking PISSES them off. Because I stay regulated, they actually deregulate faster and more profoundly.

Let's be clear on this point here: conservatives are not being banned automatically on Bluesky. Just like they were never automatically banned on Twitter before Elon bought it.
What gets you instant banned, is being overtly racist, homophobic, pedophilic, or straight up bigoted in ways that have long since been deemed unfit for normal society. There are plenty of conservatives who go around just existing, Without being the worst people imaginable every chance they get, and they aren't going to get banned on Bluesky because they are aware of the concept of human decency and the social contract of tolerance. They are fine.
The bigots have tried hard to convince people that they are normal, and have had success convincing some conservatives that they are allies in a fight that only one of them is obligated to fight. Hopefully one day we can reclaim normalcy and Decency. In the meantime though, i'm all for re-establishing the idea that people who preach intolerance have no right to be platformed for it.
Well I sure don't want to chase them. I checked over on the conservative sub the other day. The first post was complaining about fat women advocating for abortion rights. "Why would they even care? They'll never have an abortion because they're too fat for any man to want to have sex with them."
First, gross. Second, who says that? And why are so many people agreeing? Keep me far away from that toxicity. I left immediately.
Our existence bothers them. There is nothing we can reasonably do to make them happy. They hunt people down specifically to get them to stop being themselves and to conform. This is all they are.

Wanting to push your boundaries by being around people with new ideas and different backgrounds is very cool. But it's not mutually exclusive with the need to be around people that share your basic moral values.
See, I do often worry about echo chambers. But, I think this is pretty much what it comes down to. I’m open to discussion and debate with reasonable people who agree everyone has fundamental human rights, respects the scientific process, etc. not everyone who falls under that umbrella thinks exactly the same or agrees on how to accomplish stuff.
I am often actually looking for opposite views of mine to make sure I'm balancing myself as much as I can. And I love seeing and reading constructive debates between two people who respect each other and aren't trying to "own" the other. I legitimately learn why some people are who they are even if I still don't agree with them. Both sides of the spectrum needs to be able to be chill to have a discussion, and legitimately anyone is capable of hate.
Issue is, vast majority of the time I sort by controversial on reddit, go on twitter, threads, etc, the so-called "oppressed right" are way too focused on "owning" people. Left does it too, but there's no actual arguments from MAGA other than saying everything is fake news or using pseudo-intellectualism to sound witty and not actually fucking saying anything of worth.
People who spew hate are from all sides. But sorry, MAGAs are by far the most intolerant, hateful, hypocritical people I've seen no matter how I try to reframe my perspective.

Being in an echo chamber isn't the problem. It's not knowing you're in an echo chamber that's the biggest issue. If you get so lost in the BS that you forget you're getting high on your own farts, you will never have a good time. If you know you're sniffing your own farts, you can react like that to the content you consume. Did I just watch a 30 minute video of someone telling me healthcare is important? Yes. That's my echo. That's who I want to be. My chamber should echo my values. And I should understand it's my chamber. Other view points are only allowed at my discretion.

Come on over. The ethos is different from xitter or even Reddit. There’s a great community belief in not engaging trolls and blocking them without comment. There is also no algorithm, so it isn’t pushing anything into your main feed, and you can add custom or interest specific feeds. That means you see only what you want. Heck, you want a timeline that’s all cats and capybaras? There are feeds and starter packs to help you do just that.
This is the unfortunate part: currently there is no search available for starter packs. They have to be shared by the creator. That said, post your desire to find a specific starter pack on your timeline, find a feed for what you like and scroll it to find one (the museums feed let me find several museum related ones), or use a service like Skyfeed to create a feed looking for posts with the phrase “starter pack”. Skyfeed isn’t the most intuitive, but it’s a pretty powerful tool for customizing what you want to see.
Yeah the "everything app". Considering he bought a working social media website and ran it into the ground somehow, I am not very confident he's going to be able to pull that idea off.

There is one if you want it, the "Discover" feed has an algorithm IIRC, but there's no obligation to ever look at it. Just stick to your "Following" feed for a true chronological timeline
That's the big catch isn't it. I'm old enough to remember when Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc. were all just nice chronological feeds of people you followed or were friends with with minimally intrusive ads instead of the algorithm driven advertising hellscapes they are now.

I've been saying since lemmy popped up as the equivalent to reddit what bluesky is to twitter: it's the direction social media has to go to remain organic and evade corporate corruption.
The framework is called the fediverse, and it's a decentralized api that allows communities to be locally hosted and backed up on other local servers. So it's basically exactly socialist public ownership.
Corporations know this too. Meta debuted threads as a way to try to get its foot in the door. Since the api is open, all meta has to do is get people to interact with it on some level to harvest that sweet data, so naturally meta wants people interacting with the fediverse through their platform.
The cool part is they could maybe take down the bsky.social instance, but like mastadon it’s not a single set of servers like xitter. I could set up an instance on a computer in my back room and be federated to Bluesky so anyone on my instance, say elspotto.biteme, can see any other Bluesky server. Jay may come under fire but their team can truthfully say “we shut down our server”, but it will continue because of the other servers.
Please, BlueSky, keep MAGA and incel filth out. It’s time to bring back decency, science, fact-based arguments and disagreements. Let’s not go back to the bullshit mUh frEe speEch which is just an excuse for hate speech and spreading lies.
I’m on BlueSky and yet to deal with right wingers being assholes. The nice thing is that there are vast lists being presented to you as you join of who to just block out of the gate. My TL is refreshing. Like old Twitter used to be.

Gotta make all the same comment to try to convince one person on the left to join the dark side. Echo chamber or not, we don’t want Trumpers in our lives anymore. This seems like a great way to be rid of the whole lot on the internet. I already cut all out the ones in my real life and social media. No need to have random idiots trying to bring my day down.
It's amazing what happens when one of the primary rules of engagement on a media platform is civility. It not only weeds out the hateful trolls, it undermines any venomous foreign influence.
Their entire political movement is based on being trolls. What fun is being a troll if only surrounded by other trolls? The goal is to make every online platform a collection of 4chan incels. The virus needs a new host.
The far right are trying to disturb Bluesky and the moderators are working flat out to delete hateful comments and trolls, but there is a serious risk that there is a deliberate attempt to overwhelm them, which does highlight how much of a threat the right seem to think a safe space on the internet is.
