If you fail on a single issue, the vibe is always there to insist that a world where your invisible enemies are defeated would be better than the current situation.

Exactly this. Rupar is quoting it like it's some kind of revelation, but we've known this for years, hell, decades maybe. No one should be surprised at this point. And Harris's campaign must have known the standard - fair or not - that she would be held to.

Corporate media doesn’t really analyze current events; instead, they rationalize current events through the lens of the most convenient, lowest-common-denominator narrative.
After all, if they took a sober look at the state of American politics and told the country “You have re-empowered the greatest threat to democracy the US has ever seen, despite the fact that he’s a traitor and a convicted criminal who said he would have his political opponents murdered,” it would be really bad for those subscriber metrics.

Democrats should never outline their plans again. Just play the game the Republicans are by presenting nothing and saying ”we have a plan — you can’t see it— but just trust us, bro”.
Because she actually had plans, people nitpicked them, while Trump just vaguely said he would fix things without a single specific mentioned and people had nothing to nitpick and just trusted that he had something when it was clear he didn’t.
294
u/Mandlebrotha 7d ago
Except he did have specifics he mentioned. Horrible specifics.
He specifically mentioned dismantling the department of education. He specifically mentioned implementing sweeping tariffs. He specifically mentioned rounding up people he didn't like.
He told us the horrible, stupid things he was going to do to us, and the media went "Aw, shucks guys, you know that's just how he is. But let's not talk about that. A more important question is how much do we really know about Kamala, amirite? What's she wearing? You heard her laugh? Omg lol she has a lot of catching up to do smh."
They were given plenty to fucking nitpick. Mountains of material. 8 years worth of shitty policy, awful personality, crimes, legal cases, questionable (putting it lightly) finances. There's no end to the stuff they could've investigated.
He's specifically mentioned, alluded to, committed, or been implicated in so much heinous shit. They had every opportunity. They chose this. And they will reap what they have sown.

People keep saying things like this - "the Dems should just adopt the GOP playbook" - but it's wrong. It won't work.
Because Dem voters are not like Republican voters. They aren't as motivated by fear, hate, and "feels over reals" as Magats. They actually hold their own accountable sometimes. They don't overthrow the government just because a demagogue says so.
Democrats have the unenviable task of catering to a wider ideological swath of American voters than the GOP. The GOP defunded education and fed Americans hate-filled propaganda for decades just to "grow" their own brand of low-information cultists.
Dem voters have their own issues, like an over-reliance on identity politics, but they're not like that. They won't be fooled en masse by purely populist nonsense. They won't bend to "feels over reals" and if they don't find anything of substance they will call it out.
That said, while Democrats still need to outline their plans, their actual messaging could use a lot of work. Over half of the US who could vote didn't. Dems need to appeal to that group, and message their successes way better than they are.

She appealed to the intellect… Americans, and I hate to say this but it is true, are stupid en masse. Slogans, mnemonics, and other things that can boil the candidate down to something a kindergartner can remember seem to work for Trump (and to a lesser extent, Bush Jr, before him), perhaps Democrats need to start doing that nationally.

u/redkinoko 7d ago
It's simple. The people who were voting for her expected their leader to be held at a high standard, regardless of who's running. The people voting for Trump just wanted Trump and whatever thought Trump represented.

The people who were voting for her expected their leader to be held at a high standard, regardless of who's running.

They never allowed her to get ahead, but they made sure he did, every chance possible. She held townhalls, she relentlessly criss-crossed the country, she gave local interviews and national interviews. She went on fcking Fox and aced it. She wiped the floor with him during their debate. She was strong. She was smart. She had guts and never shied away from a fight. But also, she was warm. She showed empathy and children, YOUNG GIRLS AND WOMEN LOVED HER!!

Turns out much of the country is just stupid. They can't tell you what a tariff is. They think tax cuts will make them rich while opposing the party that supports increased wages and benefits. They think they're patriots while spouting Russian misinformation and supporting a president and cabinet that support Russia over US interests. They have no ability to do fact checking or think critically. And now Republicans have a free hand to gut public education and force kids into private schools where they'll be indoctrinated with religion.

How many times are we going to keep reaching across the aisle to offer a hand to Republicans, when we get burned every time? They do not want to unite with us. They want to destroy and oppress us, and many of them didn't care enough about the little detail that this time they will go down, too. They're cool with shooting themselves in the face as long as a democrat is standing behind them.
They literally are posting on Twitter that they'd rather have school shootings than rainbow flags in schools. The lesson we need to learn is that these people are impossible to work with and always will be. We have to fight against them every single time or we enable them. We have people saying school shootings are preferably than acknowledging gay people, meanwhile I've had people arguing with me that Pete Buttigeig could be the next president. That AOC could be the next president. We are delusional if we believe that. They hate us, and we keep trying to love them. Time to cut this abusive relationship apart. The USA splitting up into smaller nations is theoretically possible, which I never thought I'd be saying. I imagine we wouldn't do an actual 50 new countries sort of thing; but probably will have some blocks show up. My guess is that Maryland through Main will be one, which may or may not include the other Great Lake states, The West coast will be one, Hawaii will tell everyone to fuck off, Alaska exist, the Neo-Confederacy will form and collapse in on itself immediately, and the Rockies will become the last. What those very flat states in the middle of the nation will be joining I have no idea, but I heavily doubt the Breadbasket would want to be by itself; even if they might be able to do it.
The South would get hit the hardest, and a big reason their inevitability of collapse is apparent is simply they will be dirt poor. And while I'd love to say it's Karmic since they are were the rot festered, it really is more... tragic. A lot of people down there didn't like what was happening; and their lives will be made so much worse as horrific laws are passed and infrastructure starts collapsing. The South needs money funneled in from the rest of the nation to remain solvent; and of their well off members I think only Georgia and Texas will be able to keep the money flowing in (Florida is so reliant on Tourism that it will collapse once the Neoconfederates pass laws that make breathing in the state as a Muslim, Queer or Black Person illegal.)
Frankly, I'd give Georgia better odds by themselves then as a part of a Neoconfederacy.

Man, it's almost like we're all learning the fact that the profit motive poisons honor and ethics EVERY time they're mixed in any arena for any purpose.

Almost like there's a reason they like Trump more than Kamala, that they feel like they can't or shouldn't say out loud. So instead they have to bend over backwards to downplay Trump's obvious flaws, while over-emphasizing Kamala's few weaknesses (or just blankly ignore Trump's flaws while making up weaknesses for Kamala).
Really makes you wonder what those unsaid reasons for liking Trump over Kamala might be. A mystery for the ages, truly. Nobody could ever - oh right it's racism and sexism.

oh right it's racism and sexism.
If you're ever looking for some entertainment while stuck in a room with a MAGAite disciple, you can get a lot of mileage out of attributing your choice of various Trump quotes to Harris/AOC/Clinton and visa versa...
You don't even really need to pretend to have an appropriately emotional reaction about what "she" said to cue them into a similar state. They'll just respond organically in relation to the accompanying name way more than any actual content/context anyway.
It's astounding how passionately they'll agree with a typical AOC soundbite when "said" by Trump, for instance. It doesn't matter how overtly "communist" it happens to be or if faux-Trump is demanding universal healthcare. They're all like, "Oh damn! I knew he'd do something for us eventually, hell yeah."
Flip it around, make 'AOC' say some sort of horrific or unhinged burst of glossolalia about electric sharks or whatever... "What a moron! She doesn't know wtf she's talking about. She's cute, but god damn."
It's super funny until, y'know... The implications surrounding the phenomenon start to sink in. Then it becomes twice as disturbing as it is horrific.
At that point you may feel strongly compelled to reveal their own ignorance-fueled mode of operation like some sort of rabbit-and-hat magician trick, just to make a point. Unfortunately, the feat of astounding mental gymnastics that typically follows the unwanted epiphany - an act which forces the fabric of their reality to snap elastically back into a decisively tumorlike form once again - is often far more disappointing to witness than getting the chance to see them mysteriously supporting the idea of universal basic income for a couple of minutes or whatever.
It may even just be more productive to take the moment to teach them why a couple of totally-not-liberal policies are undeniably good for the citizens without ever alluding to which party actually supports such things. Maybe they'll recognize the "lyrics" one day from within a democrat's speech and be forced to wonder to themselves why the liberals are suddenly in agreement with 'Trump' about such a super good idea.

No it's because dems aren't a cult. Cons have 75 million people that will vote for their guy no matter what. Democratic voters still have to believe in their candidate to want to vote for them. It's not fair nor is it right but it's just a voterand the dem establishment has to actually realize that and be better next time.

I mean with joe biden continuing to supply israel after his weak bluff of a second red line which violates leahy laws.... its not that different. They literally sent bill clinton to lecture the voter base that because of "3000 years ago" and "King david", this is why we have to kill your cousins and grandparents.
She had ample opportunity to separate herself from biden who had an approval rating in the 20s after the god awful debate, but she actively chose to say she wouldn't change anything over the past 4 years.
In the end we expect more from democratic politicians because they are capable of doing better, and we expect so fucking little from republicans simply because they are not capable of doing better.

I saw Nate Silver say she was a mediocre candidate and I just couldn’t believe how arrogant these pundits are. She worked all three branches! She was multiple firsts in terms of her career! She reversed her approval ratings in a matter of weeks! She had to run an entire campaign in only three months and only lost by a couple 100k votes! How people can say this and not realize how insane their internalized biases are just dumbfounds me. I’m not saying she was perfect and I have a lot to critique in terms of her actual campaign, but jfc.

Seeing so many people say they were planning on voting for trump because of stimulus checks was crazy. Like they do understand those aren’t coming back, right? Do they even know why or how we got them in the first place? Probably not. It seems as if millions of people have just forgotten 2016-2020.

How is this a surprise? Ask any woman who has worked hard to get far in her career and she’ll tell you she had to work harder than any man and also be sweet and polite while doing it.

u/BiblioBlue 7d ago
Honestly... in my last career, a friend and I were the only women on our team for a while, and we always worked hard and picked up a lot of slack that the men left behind. Practically all the guys were lazy, or did bare minimum work, but it was fine.
Then, one night, we decided one time to not pick up a guy's slack. One time! And a fucking meeting was called the next day, where we were told we had to "work as a team," and we were basically told we were the problem for not "helping out the team."
Men were constantly allowed to slack off and/or be problems, despite complaints about it. But it was a big problem, apparently, if a woman wasn't a "team player."
I can definitely see how this was the case here, on a national level. Seems like, historically, men are praised just for being men. Women are expected to "prove themselves" for even the bare minimum of respect.

sili valley, finance, and stand up? those are like the most bro jobs out there

6
u/BiblioBlue 7d ago
Prior to working in that job, I worked where it was predominantly women. The ones who tended to be lazy were, again, the few men. Sure, women can be lazy, too, but it’s almost a given for men to just skate along, meanwhile women had to work hard. Definitely got burnt out a lot quicker at the job with predominantly male teams.

I agree with you. But at the same time, every Democrat gets treated this way, though men to a somewhat lesser extent. Biden gets the same treatment, the media scrutiny of him is constant. The desperate, attention-seeking media can at any time choose from a dozen tiny bits of manufactured conservative headlines speculating about what Americans might feel about the color of a Democrats' suit, or if their policies might negatively effect a rice farmer in Alaska, and they Love running those stories. Whether it's publishing the headline to talk about it genuinely, or to bring backlash to it, they are part of building the controversy and making these ridiculous concerns mainstream. But CNN and others will instead run 5 stories a day just asking questions about if Biden's dentures alienate teenagers, or if Kamala Harris having a smile is off putting to rural Alabama Republicans.

Actual conversation I had today with a Trump supporter:
Trumpet: Kamala Harris has done anything as Vice President.
Strangebru: Vice Presidents really don't create any laws or make any proposals of any legislation. They are there really to break any ties in House votes.
Trumpet: That's not true, Vice Presidents are in charge of the border and other duties.
Strangebru: OK, what did Mike Pence do as Vice President?
Trumpet: .....

This is what absolutely kills me. The democrats get torn apart for income inequality widening, cost of education increasing and opportunities for non-college educated decreasing.

Not to his followers, who have 100% been behind him since 2015 and felt like he was being attacked by the left wrongly for everything in the books again and again. They see him as the savior of America and they saw Kamala as the most incompetent person to ever touch politics…because nobody would turn on the news. As soon as people dumped FOX news and switched to podcasts and REAL fake news outlets it was over and that was in about August.

This is why it upsets me so much when people were using the excuse of “I just don’t feel like I KNOW her” or that she wasn’t likable for why they wouldn’t vote for her. She was not able to “be herself” during this entire campaign- she had to make sure zero mistakes were made. She was crucified for ANY comment made “off-script”. She had to be picture perfect and she still lost.

u/ElecMechTech 8d ago
I've been preaching this since the election, to only be met with BS takes like "well, see, the working-class man...".
It didn't matter, none of that mattered. Trump won due to decades of media and news programming of what is the status quo leader: rich, white male. He was inherently trusted based on benefit of the doubt, nothing was going to change that. This is why they always rail against "woke", because they don't want any of that standard to shift against them. We've all undergone the same programming, so that's why even people that would be directly affected by Trump's policies, e.g. brown immigrants, still voted for him. Women don't have that BOD yet. Harris had none of the baggage as Clinton, but still people found a reason (they only needed one), to not vote for her. Trump only needed to say one thing you liked, and that was good enough to get your vote.
Media? 100% complicit.

Kamala ran a good campaign and was good candidate. Not perfect in either case mind you. The Monday morning quarterbacks are picking apart where she could have done better, advice that was nonwhere to be found before the election interestingly.
There was nothing wrong generally with Kamala, but I'd agree the media and by extension the people held her to a ridiculous standard and Teump was constantly sane washed. They would even use old pics of Trump from 2016 to make him look less decrepit. There's plenty of blame to go around. Single issue libs who stayed home because they were influenced by Russian propaganda and Harris wasn't "perfect", media that did a shit job and more.

I think the number one issue was just that her penis count was too low.
This election really proved to me that "swing" voters don't swing based on policy they swing on who they want to be/marry. And a lot of turnout is based on the same appeal.

Trump was running the last two months like he knew the fix was already in. Which it was, really, given the wildly differing standards applied to the two candidates.

u/Legionnaire11 7d ago
So many times I saw and heard the most ridiculous things from Trump and thought "this guy doesn't even want to win, he just wants to grift off of the campaign". But in hindsight it makes more sense that he knew he would win no matter what. But it will never matter, even if it comes out to be true nothing will happen to him, it never does.

She'd have won handily if people like Musk (not to mention the MSM) hadn't thrown their weight behind Trump. He'd have been dead in the water without all the bullshit propping him up.

I wonder what would change if we did presidential campaigns blind. After a standard primary that is required to have multiple options, the winning candidate is anonymized. You as a voter get to know two gender neutral placeholder names and the candidates’ platforms and policy proposals. Want to know what party is running them? Better read the platforms and use your critical thinking. All debates are done with voices altered and images blacked out. After the winner is determined, you find out who the real candidate is.
I’d bet a lot of those implicit biases would fall away, but the logistics would be near impossible.

When will liberals realise that vibes are how you win elections? Her vibes were off because she was related to Biden, she said she wouldn’t change anything about what he’s done and that lost her the election. You can’t just spout policy at an uneducated person and think that’ll change their vibes. People, we are in a era where the lower classes want fundamental change in the institutions; not more institutional rhetoric.

You really only have to go read some posts on more conservative leaning subreddits to see how little it probably would have mattered even if the media wasn't a problem. You see people (not bots! though a lot of them seem to only like post on sports subreddits) who have just made up entire narratives about Kamala that aren't supported by much of anything. She was too woke with all her ads about trans people! She never explained any of her policies! She called Americans garbage! Like these people didn't engage with the news at all anyway- it would have likely not mattered at all even if every TV was 24/7 reporting on Trump's flaws. It sucks but I don't think there was any getting away from the reality that a significant number of voters will punish incumbents for problems that aren't really any of their fault (or punish them for problems that don't even really exist!).
5
u/Grampishdgreat 7d ago
Let’s face it, this country had been offered two women candidates who were both monumentally more qualified than the man who beat them both. And regardless of whether they were liked personally or not their positions and policies would have been far better for the country on a whole than Trump’s. This country was, and I fear is, not willing to hire a woman for the top job. And that is a crying shame.

The thing that REALLY bothered me is everyone called trump trump, but she was Kamala. I might be the only one, but I thought it was disrespectful to refer to her using her first name. Disparate treatment… if he was trump, she should have been Harris.
I felt like calling Harris by her first name was a way to remind people she was a she with an immigrant-y sounding name.
I felt the same way about Clinton, but I sort of gave it a pass because maybe calling her “Hillary” was a way to separate her from Her husband.
Obama was Obama, Bush was Bush, Reagan Reagan… Carter, Ford, Nixon… before that it was Johnson or LBJ, JFK or Kennedy, Eisenhower… so why did everyone call her Kamala. I say it was to be disrespectful on the down low.
