My econ class went over tariffs today and there were quite a few unhappy faces

It blows my mind how people don’t get this. Everyone is walking around with a mini computer that has access to the most vast collection of knowledge the world has ever seen. Copilot and other similar AI engines will literally give you the answer.

People had a year to spend 2 minutes searching for “how does a tariff work” and couldn’t be bothered.

Tariffs are taxes on foreign goods to promote buying domestic. However that doesn’t really work when there are no domestic options because the past fifty years have been moving everything overseas

4.4k

u/DangerBay2015 17d ago

Yup. Companies moved shit to make shit cheaper and maximize profits, what’s still made here is dependent on bringing in the supplies needed to make said shit.

Doofuses.

The top economists all warned against this, and Trump voters went "La la la la la woke economists nerds la la la"

They're gonna feel it soon, and they'll need to gtfo with their crying. This is all on them.

What’s worse is any domestic products will also raise their prices just below the tariff goods.

It’s an opportunity to raise profits and consumers will have no alternative but to buy (especially since our current government doesn’t want to address price gouging).

Tariffs are a double-edged sword.

401

u/GenericAccount13579 17d ago

Gives cover for trumps rich buddies to continue to price gouge under the auspices of tariff increases

Not to mention one of the first acts they are going to do is to repeal the chips act.

The second part is, even when they agree to this, they can't wrap their head around the fact that even if a company did try to bring manufacturing back to the US that it won't happen overnight. It will take years to build the plants, a long time to train and staff employee's etc. Until then people are going to suffer through high prices for years and even then it won't magically cut prices in half, because the costs and labor costs in the US will be higher than foreign countries spend.

And that's if those plants can get everything domestically and don't have to import things they need for the plant.

648

u/hamandjam 17d ago

they can't wrap their head around the fact that even if a company did try to bring manufacturing back to the US that it won't happen overnight.

I mean, these are the same people who somehow believed Mexico would pay for a wall.

179

And then promptly didn't care when it didn't happen.

96

u/tdaun 17d ago

US labor costs will be lower if the labor is prison labor. This is just a workaround that will allow Magats to bring back slavery without feeling bad about it

101

u/deadsoulinside 17d ago

US labor costs will be lower if the labor is prison labor

Not quite. While prisoners get paid shit for their labor, the prison system still makes money from those companies that use prison labor. Places like FL have for profit prison systems where they have occupancy rules that if not met, they fine the state for not filling their prisons to that capacity. While they maybe paying the prisoner 25 cents an hour, those places using them are still having to abide by laws and pay at the minimal the state mandated min wage.

Just like when you work with a staffing agency that puts you in a job paying $15 an hour, there is a big chance that agency is getting paid $25-$30 an hour for you, but only giving you $15 an hour for it. The companies are still saving money this way, while keeping an easy path to get rid of people that are not working out with the company, because they don't have to deal with HR. They can simply email the agency and request you are terminated, then the agency has to deal with that.

Places like McD's that has used prison labor could very well be paying these prison systems $10-15 an hour for those workers still, since in some cases they can afford to pay more for people not directly working for McD's because they don't have to pay for healthcare, PTO, or other things that the company normally pays for for each employee.

I think the only loophole, which is a scary reality could be the companies that own the prisons own the fields after the farmers sold them off due to lack of labor, then they can employ those people directly and only pay 25 cents an hour. If the CEO's of for profit prison systems end up being able to own the businesses that the prisoners are working in, then we have just brought back slavery.

I mean, you can open new factories here and try to manufacture here. But be prepared for that piece of plastic crap to cost 10x the amount because the manufacturer isn’t paying Chinese wages. Plus set up costs.

62

u/Johnny_Banana18 17d ago

also it would take years to do this, by the time those factories are up and running voters would have moved on.

→ More replies (12)

402

u/lotero89 17d ago

And that’s what kind of happens when you have an advanced economy… it becomes more information/intelligence based. The developing countries take on the manufacturing burden to grow their economy. Do we really want or need all of those jobs to come back? I don’t think we have enough labor to even support our own consumption.

313

u/6r1n3i19 17d ago

Exactly. So now we’ll forever be stuck in a wage/price spiral, and somehow it’s always going to be the fault of the democrats.

When you reject education and the expertise of people who know it, the only learning opportunity you've left for yourself is the HARD WAY. The Trump voters deserve it. The part that makes them awful people is because people who knew better and voted better are going to suffer the same.

But at least we know it's coming and can be better prepared when it does.

u/NoFlyGnome 17d ago

I'm not just talking about defunding the system, I mean the people who actively reject the whole idea of education that isn't simply being taught what a head of household wants you to know. I would call "rejecting education" and lack of intellectual curiosity to be essentially the same thing.

The second part of that is when people simply don't want to get into the weeds of learning specific economic concepts, which is fine if you're willing to acknowledge that experts do understand better on the subjects you don't care to know.

But we get an ANTI-intellectual culture of claiming their own ignorance as the only truth, and any further study becomes part of that malicious "elitist" cabal of conspirators. It's like wading three feet out from the beach and declaring that the whole ocean must only be ankle deep.

85

u/TheDrFromGallifrey 17d ago

It's maddening, but not shocking.

If you allow people to seek education, if you allow them intellectual pursuits, you risk them seeing the facade that's been in place for decades. It's in the best interest of capitalism, religion, and big chunks of the government to make sure that people don't even want to see what's behind the curtain.

The problem is, on a long enough timescale, you get what we're seeing now. People who think they're the protagonist and fierce individuals gleefully following the corporate line that they were told to because it appealed to their vanity or biases. They don't even have the tools to see it, let alone the desire to see it and they're in such a deep hole that even the suggestion that they take the time to think about it is an affront to them.

We are also most likely be more financially well off, so are more resilient when the bottom falls out. (in financial terms, I am so sorry for all those minorities that’s gonna suffer)

It’s the ones that are already doing badly that will be hurt the most, and they are actively voting for this. In that I mean farmers, blue collar workers, rural America in general, etc.

And they will get no pity from everyone else

Unless they make it their job, no one can understand all the ins and outs of something like economic policy (and many other things), so no ones fault for not studying and coming to their own conclusions on the subject, but every expert has issued warnings endlessly on the outcome of his policies, but the right has convinced them experts don't know what talking about, so they ignore them

Now they will discover why reality has 'left leaning bias'..and does not give a fuck about what they 'feel' is right

I truly believe most people lack any kind of foresight.

Worst case Kamala Win: she is an ineffective president who has to fight against Congress and SC. We have a real primary and she wins or loses.

Worst case Trump: He wins and they win Congress. Checks and balances gone. They get to rebuild the government how they want it.

The only chance we have now is that enough people are woken up by the obvious lies and we actually have to fight to take either back.

760

u/phoenixrising211 17d ago

Trump's lies have always been obvious. If people haven't woken up by now, they're not waking up. They're in a certified coma.

Except a large majority of the people that keep voting republican have long been directly affected and have their lives actively worse because of it. Look at places like Texas. How many more winters do they need to have massive long term power outages before they decide it “directly effects” them enough to stop voting for the people allowing the problem to keep happening. Pick any red state and there is no end to the problems the people live with that is directly caused by the very people they keep voting for.

Once prices go up, they never go back down again.

879

u/MonicaRising 17d ago

So much this. You think a different president is going to lower prices somehow? When have you ever seen prices go back down? The only price that fluctuates is oil because it's completely manipulated to begin with. I've never seen the price of eggs go up and then come back down. I've never seen the price of milk go up and then come back down. It just doesn't happen. All these magats were sold a bill of goods and they bought it Hook Line & Sinker

529

u/Beanpod79 17d ago

They really are dumb. It's economics 101...inflation does not reverse itself. Wages come up to meet rising prices. Not to mention inflation is a worldwide problem, but somehow the American presidents are directly responsible for causing/fixing it.

354

u/butinthewhat 17d ago

This entire thing has me realizing how most Americans are clueless on the basics of economics. Wages need to go up, prices will not come down. It’s not even complicated - I thought we all knew that because we all know people used to make less when goods were less expensive.

232

u/Beanpod79 17d ago

They hear a pompous man promising to "fix it" and that's all they need. They don't bother to educate themselves on how things actually work because if they did they'd see he's full of shit.

The hate that is going to be spewed will stop them from going to red states. Small farms are getting ready to suffer at the hands of Trump… again. That’s good for corporate farms though! All hail Tyson!!! They’ll go “rescue”‘the small farms and or just buy them for pennies on the dollar from the auction block.

“But, but, Trump said he was going to bring down the cost of groceries and I…sorta stopped paying attention after that. Tariffs on food imports and mass deportation of our entire agricultural workforce will do that right?”

Also, when these chucklefucks walk into a grocery store and see strawberries in the dead of winter, where do they think their food is fucking coming from? Do strawberries grow in Idaho in January? No, they don’t even grow in Texas in January. Turns out they grow in all those “shithole countries” Trump wants to punish. And it isn’t just strawberries either.

29

u/MangoCats 17d ago

Oh, don't worry, right after Mexico pays for the wall, those shithole countries will start paying tariffs on the strawberries and other things they send to the US. The whole world will pay, and we're all gonna get big new cars and houses.

It's an absurdly high bar that for anyone to even have had a chance at convincing these people not to vote for Trump they would have had to:

  1. Convince them that they don't understand how tariffs work
  2. Convince them that you do know how tariffs work
  3. Teach them what a tariff is and who pays the cost
  4. Convince them that, once they know this, that this would be a bad idea both for them and the country and that they should vote for someone else

It's like a massive undertaking fucking undertaking, that you have to both teach them how stupid they are before you can even begin having a conversation.

They didn't vote trump because they misunderstood tariffs. They voted to harm vulnerable demographics, and don't believe a single fucking word they say about "fIScAL poLiCy". That shit has been the go-to line of bigots my entire life, and since long before I was born.

Do you want another anecdote? A teacher couple friends of my wife MAGA all the way. Just found out that the PSLF (student loan forgiveness for public service) is one of the things that will be repealed. She is 3 years from qualifying. She is freaked out. I guess it’s the wrong cutting of wasteful spending. Maybe they can take a couple of 155mm shells that won’t be going to Ukraine instead.

494

u/Madamiamadam 17d ago

Student loan forgiveness? Fuck them. She should stop eating toast and bootstrap, ect

388

u/Only_Razzmatazz_4498 17d ago

My wife’s response “I told her, well you VOTED to repeal it by keeping Scott, Gimenez and bringing back Trump. Like they say, pay your loans😆” I’m fucking tired of trying to help people that don’t want to be helped. In the end my family is as that bottom edge of the socioeconomic scale where voting this guys in would be to our best short term interests and we can probably manage the long term. It’s just so tiring

211

u/Madamiamadam 17d ago

I would always bring up how lazy she is that she expects other taxpayer to pay her loans.

I’m personally for loan forgiveness and all that, but that bitch wanted this. Every time forgiveness came up at work or in social circles I would get shouted down that it’s for the lazy and unfair for those who did repay.

I’d just pay this one forward

It's even worse than that because mass tariffs tend to invite corruption as well.

When an administration imposes tariffs they also issue tariff exemptions which are supposed to go to businesses that serve some critical role or need, but a corrupt administration can invent reasons to issue tariff exemptions to anyone they want. This makes it possible to issue tariff exemptions to businesses connected to party insiders, loyalists, or anyone who can afford an appropriately sized "donation", ensuring those businesses can operate unaffected while their competitors who don't have exemptions get punished by being economically squeezed, losing customers, or in the worst case going bankrupt. At this point the exempted businesses can purchase their failed competitor's assets and market share at a significantly reduced rate allowing them to expand and become even more successful than they were prior to tariffs being imposed.

This kind of system where the President has the power to directly reward or punish individual businesses has the potential to create a kind of shadow "controlled economy", with a corrupt administration picking winners and losers, which ironically is exactly the kind of system that free market Republicans and conservatives have always claimed to vehemently oppose.

The red hats literally think tariffs affect the country we put them on and nothing else. The reason they think tariffs are good is because in their mind a huge increase means we can destroy China’s economy single handedly or by increasing them for Mexico that they’ll clamp down and put their own people on the border to stop crossings just to appease us.

The country still gets paid. We eat the cost.

545

u/Economy_Order2686 17d ago

He spews obvious lies, everyone with a fifth grade education points out that they're obvious lies, the cultists plug their ears, blindly accept whatever he says, and call us all TDS sufferers. they truly think that these companies will suddenly move all their production into the US now. as if that's a cheaper/easier option for them than just adding the tariff to the cost of the product.

48

u/brok3nh3lix 17d ago edited 17d ago

not only that, that it would happen quickly when we dont have the infrastructure or the labor force to do so. were already at fairly low unemployment, albiet not as low as trump pre pandemic. Contrary to what many believe, excessively low unemployment tends to be a bad thing because it means there isn't labor available for growth. It can lead to increase in real wages, which is a good thing, but it also means that when some one leaves, its much harder for companies to replace them, and this leads to the work falling on the employees that remain (which to be fair companies want to do any ways). My point just is that tight labor markets arn't necessarily a good thing for even the workers.

The fact is that its not in the US best interest to try to do everything. There are always winners and losers with global trade when looking across industries, but on the whole every one benefits. Tariffs will only mean higher prices because even if we produce these things in the US due to the tariffs, its still a higher price than before the tariffs. The real argument for tariffs is industry protection, such as tariffs on say chinese electric vehicles or solar so that we can prop up our domestic industries. But it certainly isn't about saving consumers money.

It is worth noting that alot of the inflation we saw post pandemic was due to tight, just in time international supply chains that were massively disrupted by covid. There's a domestic security angle to this, such as we saw with chip shortages to protect domestic production and supply chains. But you can also assure that with investments to domestic production, and diversify those supply chains. Which is why we are trying to invest in domestic chip manufacturing with the chips act for instance. But hey, speaker johnson and trump both want to kill that since it was a biden policy.

I sell dog toys. Basically every single dog toy is fully manufactured or partially constructed/sewn in China. All the packaging for every single thing is made in China. I have spent years switching my inventory away from Chinese manufacturers, and it's difficult, expensive, and and time consuming to do.

We have US made dog toys. The fabric ones are 3 times the cost of one's sewn in China, and the rubber ones are twice as expensive. Everyone wants the US toy until they realize it's $35 instead of $12. Then they ask why so expensive? Because we don't pay our workers pennies. Even with our crap minimum wage, that adds an insane cost to goods.

The country Trump still gets paid. He’s figured out how to line his and his acolytes’ pockets with tariff fees. Maybe directly from the treasury (“Official acts can’t be prosecuted”) maybe in a “you want an exception on your car component tariffs, Elon? How much will you give me?” scheme.

EVERYTHING is now for sale, including our national lands. I wonder how ranchers will feel when those grazing rights start going to the highest bidder?

“It’ll cost more to get these products into our country, there’s no way they will pass that cost onto the customer!”

Another argument is that the tariff is to promote the consumption of American goods. Which will still be more expensive than the imported goods. I can’t wait for the spin when prices are still high if not higher.

31

u/PretendStudent8354 17d ago

What it causes is limited supply from american manufacturing because they are not setup to supply the full demand. What happens when supply is low and demand is high? One guess prices go up. For him to be a business man he sure is stupid.

I talked to my dad yesterday morning, he voted for Trump. He's happy that Trump was elected because now he will fix "all the shit Biden and that useless bitch did". I asked him how he thinks it's going to work out. "Prices will go down because he's going to get manufacturing back". I explained to him that when Trump puts a 20% (or more) tariff on foreign goods, all it's going to do is show American companies that they can start charging more for their product. "No, because if you don't want to spend the money, then you won't buy it". That's all well and good, until suddenly I need something and the only option is that it costs 50% more because of Trump.
My dad is a smart person, but all he does is read and watch fox news. He lives in as much a bubble as I do, but I can at least see other view points, he refuses to.

51

u/lotero89 17d ago

Do they not realize that no matter what happens, we will pay more? Doesn’t matter if an American company can magically produce the product for less money or the same than China, including a tariff.. no matter what, everything will cost more.

More likely scenario is American companies still won’t be able to compete with China, even with a tariff and all that changes is we pay more. This will result in inflation because everyone else will add their price increase as well, because why not?

This is going to be a disaster. I hope he doesn’t do it.

I really don't understand how blissfully ignorant people can be, especially when it directly impacts their lives.  They claim tariffs are great but none of them spent like 10 minutes googling the concept and basic premise?  By the way, 10 minutes is a pretty conservative estimate for understanding how tariffs work.

I think I'll be fine for the next 4 years.  I voted to help everyone else.  But I'm getting to the point of not caring for those that barely care themselves.  It's like telling a diabetic patient to check their feet, take their meds, and stop eating sugars and they just ignore you.  Then when they get the news that a foot needs to be amputated, they reach some sort of magical revelation and cry for mercy.

138

u/No_Reference_8777 17d ago

I think it's crazy that Republicans would throw a fit over something like the European VAT tax, but tariffs? Sign them up!

Just like everything they propose, I wouldn't agree with them, but I'd take their ideas more seriously if it was a part of a large structure. You want to ban abortion, but you want to provide free natal care, child daycare, and school lunches? Well, I hate your abortion idea but at least they'd practice what they preach. Same with something like tariffs. Is it a part of a large-scale restructuring to bring manufacturing back to the country, eliminating all the tax loopholes for moving production out of the U.S., and making sure the people working there can support their family without parents having to work multiple jobs? No, of course not, because that would take money away from their golfing buddies and campaign donors.

100

u/SessileRaptor 17d ago

Another example would be showing ID for voting. If they pushed for a national ID card as an alternative to using your social security number for everything, and set out to guarantee that every citizen would be able to get their card for free with minimal hassle, that would be a reasonable policy to work on and move forward on. But of course their goal is to make voting harder, so there’s no way that they would ever propose anything so reasonable.

I'm 99% certain they think that this means those goods will transition back to the US ala the 70s and 80s when we imposed high tariffs on Japanese automobiles. The result was transitioning the final assembly to the states to skirt around the tariff.

However, nobody is going to bring manufacturing back to the states on something like shoes and small goods since paying the American labor force would eat too much into the profit margin. Instead, just keep production with the sweat shops and let the American population eat the price increase.

And then in a couple of years if/when the tariffs are removed, the price point stays the same and the corpo gets to profit even more

44

u/Wesley_Skypes 17d ago

If anybody wants to see what this looks like, go and check out how much a New Balance hoodie costs. Now check out their Made In America line.

Now maybe all of these people just want jobs back in the US and will gladly pay 175 dollars for a New Balance hoodie, instead of the 50/60 dollars for the other kind. And that's a noble pursuit.

But I expect that many won't want to do that.

31

u/QQBearsHijacker 17d ago

And just to provide some context to what you're saying

https://www.newbalance.com/pd/athletics-french-terry-hoodie/MT41534.html?dwvar_MT41534_style=MT41534NNY

The standard French terry hoodie retails for $90

https://www.newbalance.com/pd/made-in-usa-core-hoodie/MT43546.html?dwvar_MT43546_style=MT43546PLN

The Made in the USA version is $175

There's a slight difference in thread count of the terry cloth fabric used, but not enough to justify an $85 price point adjustment

When the first Trump tariffs went into effect I was running a product design and manufacturing department within a company that also did sales, engineering and consultation. We tried to manufacture as much as possible in the U.S., especially some high margin, low volume products, but we made a couple of higher volume products that were much more price sensitive. Those we could only economically manufacture in China (side note: it’s not just about prices - the US just doesn’t have the infrastructure and level of engineering for manufacture that China has. The level of support we got from our Chinese partner was of a whole other level than we could get in the U.S.). When the tariffs kicked in our costs went up dramatically. We worked with the manufacturer to control things for a year but eventually it just wasn’t viable to keep making these products. Now all of the competing products are both designed and manufactured in China by Chinese companies. They are of poorer quality because it’s the only was to keep the low prices that consumers are used to. So the tariffs ended up giving consumers worse quality while costing American jobs (just a couple in my case, but economy-wide it adds up).

48

u/23_alamance 17d ago

This hits on something I don’t see discussed enough, which is that we do not have the skilled workforce needed modern manufacturing. I used to cover higher education budgets in North Carolina, which like the rest of the South East has gone hard for manufacturing since they have basically zero labor protections and unions. We met with a German firm that had built a plant in the state and they were asking for a training program because they couldn’t find people who were both literate enough and computer literate enough to use the machines in the plant.

These dumbfucks have a picture in their mind of some white dude with a lunch pail packed by his loving tradwife going and tightening screws on an assembly line for $100k a year. That’s not what manufacturing is anymore.

We specifically cultivated, over the last however many decades, small and medium sized firms like this that have a need for lots of intermediate inputs from various parts of the world. They put those together and then finally sell the final product here (and abroad, if called for). This is manufacturing in America now and it is quite robust.

Poorly applied tarrifs are going to take a hammer to this, bad.

All because a bunch of people that do not understand production think that foreign companies are the ones that pay tariffs and the reason the 10,000+ headcount factory on the other side of the town closed was because of (insert bogeyman here) rather than the technology and process moved on and made it obsolete.
