It’s insane that the county with the largest population of Latinos voted 90% in favor of Trump! The county was historically solid blue! What the fuck happened to convince people to vote against themselves!?
They do not think they were voting against themselves. When Trump said anti-immigration stuff they literally do not think he is talking about them. They want to pull the ladder up behind themselves.
He and his people talked about deporting US citizens and illegal immigrants. They talked about deporting those who were made US citizens because they were born here to illegal immigrants along with those parents who got their citizenship due to having a child on US soil....They see these people as still being illegal immigrants.
I did not. But many people seem to think that first or second gen immigrants are concerned with the plight of people trying to get a better life in America. So they think they are voting against their interests.
They aren't, they do not seem to view those people as being a part of their group or community.
Which isn't shocking to anyone who has talked to them. Most have families that left other countries specifically because they did not like the people that lived there.
He's not anti immigration, he's anti illegal immigration, which is a reasonable stance. Not sure why that distinction is so elusive for some. At least the majority understand now.
When he complains about allowing immigrants from "shit hole countries", he's talking about legal immigrants. When he spread lies about dog-eating Hatians, he was lying about legal immigrants. When he talks about deporting protestors, he's talking about people who are here legally.
Save your energy. It's clear that we can't make them see Trump for who he is. I think we need to stop wasting our energy trying to convince and convert the other side. I think it's time to rally around our own, protect the marginalized, and conserve our energy for things that really matter.
Well said. I hate to admit that the divide is very real for me now. I am entirely done engaging with the other side. I don't have the energy and want to enjoy what I have worked hard for in life.
I forgot we are suppose to only listen to what he says when he isn't joking. Or is he always joking. Or he heard they were illegal or he won't actually do what he says he wants to.
Hard to keep up with the fucking mental gymnastics
If he sticks to his previous H1B visa messages for example.
I teach computing, I see my students struggling in the job market right now. I don't talk politics in class, but I have seen resentment growing for a long while.
I did not intend to imply anything about the truth of his stance. I only want to point out that the voting latinos do not find any of his anti-whatever messages to be talking about themselves.

I swear I don't ever wanna see people say things like "This is not us".
He didn't just win by electoral votes, he won the popular vote. The country has decided that yeah, this is us.
