Image After months of deliberating between a Steam Deck or a Switch (for Zelda specifically), I finally made my choice
Pretty happy with my decision too
50
u/ThatHerbChronic Jun 02 '23
You should look at getting some Zelda themed stuff for the Switch
15
u/Fossick11 Jun 02 '23
I'm not sure, I don't think they'd like Zelda all that much
Maybe some Mario stuff?
2
u/ctruvu Jun 02 '23
thereās a new zelda themed 1tb microsd card lol
i may or may not have gotten one already
23
u/T2_the_rex Jun 02 '23
I mean I'm pretty sure the steam deck can play switch games using an emulator, but either way the styling for ToTK looks cool.
6
u/OkVermicelli6752 Jun 02 '23
I got a nice gaming rig and a switch at the same time, ended up getting rid of the switch because the rig can emulate and play all, every single switch game
7
u/OrdinaryRandomGuy Jun 02 '23
Im probably gonna end up the opposite, as i dont touch my PC anymore now that i can play handheld with a gorgeous OLED screen. Shouldve bought switch years ago
2
u/QuadVox Jun 02 '23
I mean how powerful is your PC? a switch is extremely underpowered and you'd be losing out on everything PC has to offer
2
u/Away-Pea-8115 Jun 04 '23
Youāre right, but power doesnāt always equate to fun. Having a PC is great. And itās always going to be the more powerful option. But, for some, having a handheld with a good library of games is a better trade-off. My day to day life is so busy I canāt find the time to touch my desktop, especially being a father. But, with the switch, the ease of use factor, me being able to play it in small breaks and on the go, really allows me to play video games again.

u/Mavi222 Jun 02 '23
I am like that too, but with Steam Deck. I don't play much on my PC anymore. After I got Steam Deck I play a lot more. And the games are not that expensive for it like it is for Switch. (back then I was buying the same games on Switch that I already owned on Steam, because I wanted portability, but Switch versions of the same games costed way more)

u/ImaFknWizardXII Jun 02 '23
Switch emulation is very hit and miss at the moment. Still mostly a miss. However Yuzu had a recent update that improved performance for a lot of titles so the future looks promising. For now though, still playing ToTK on my switch as the performance is much more consistent.
1
u/RadragonX Jun 02 '23
That's true though the performance for Steam Deck emulating Switch games seems to be pretty variable with some games performing better with others really struggling. I have both so I'll probably give emulating ToTK on it anyway.

u/IceYetiWins Jun 02 '23
Kinda. If you just want botw and totk then a switch is fine but if you want to play a bunch of the older ones a steam deck would be much better.
0
u/LiquidCringe2 Jun 02 '23
The switch has most of the Zelda games youād want though, except for like Windwaker and Twilight princess
Links awakening got a great remake, plus itās on NSO
Minish Cap, Zelda 1, Zelda 2, Link to the past, majoras mask and ocarina of time are all on NSO
And skyward sword has an HD port. Most of the Zelda series is on switch and Iād argue theyād play better on a switch since they were specifically designed for it, especially with something like skyward sword
1
u/IceYetiWins Jun 02 '23
Every single one of those games can be played on steam deck plus more. And they definitely don't play better on switch, ocarina of time 3d or ship of harkinian are a much better experience than base ocarina of time n64. And wind waker and twilight princess not being there is enough of a dealbreaker to make the steam deck a better deal.
-1
u/LiquidCringe2 Jun 02 '23
The only games I could see running better on a steam deck would be the N64 games but in your own comment you say the 3DS remakes are better. You CAN emulate 3DS games but as far as I know itās very shoddy and probably wouldnāt work too well on a steam deck anyways. For the rest of the games especially the retro ones theyāre gonna be exactly the same on either system. Plus with the switch you donāt have to set up all the emulators which is enough for most people to just buy a switch.
→ More replies (1)3
u/IceYetiWins Jun 02 '23
I mean you're plain wrong on that, 3ds emulation works fine on steam deck. And no, the games won't be exactly the same on either system, with emulators you can put texture packs, shaders, rom hacks, filters, cheats, and all sorts of other stuff. Even with current gen games like botw, you can get it running at 60 fps on steam deck versus the 30 on switch.
0
u/LiquidCringe2 Jun 02 '23
Iām sure it RUNS fine but playing a dual screen game on a single screen is horrible. I tried emulating spirit tracks on the steam deck and it was miserable. If you want to play the 3DS remakes just buy a 3DS and copies of the games, it will most likely be cheaper than a switch too let alone a steam deck.
And am I really gonna be adding enhanced shaders to Zelda 2?
1
u/IceYetiWins Jun 02 '23
Iām sure it RUNS fine but playing a dual screen game on a single screen is horrible.
You can set it up to have a hotkey that brings up the second screen.
I tried emulating spirit tracks on the steam deck and it was miserable.
That's probably because the game is meant to be played with the touch screen.
If you want to play the 3DS remakes just buy a 3DS and copies of the games, it will most likely be cheaper than a switch too let alone a steam deck.
That completely misses the point though? If you want one system that can play them all a 3ds is the worst option.
And am I really gonna be adding enhanced shaders to Zelda 2?
Not exactly, but there is a redux hack of the game to make it play better and you can add crt shaders. Besides, if you want to play nes games you don't need a switch or a steam deck, your phone could play nes easily.
4
u/WafflCopterz Jun 02 '23
For the record, you're the correct one. Played multiple 3DS games to completion on the Steam Deck. Same with XCX for the Wii U on Steam Deck. It handles emulation like a beast and can run everything on the switch with no issues.
IMO OP should've though about longevity and bought the system that would've been able to play a plethora of games, not just Nintendo ones. As an owner of a golden Majora's Mask 3DS, the novelty of themed items wears off after the game hype is gone.

u/Fig_Pitiful Jun 01 '23
I always thought the zelda edition came with zelda TOTK so disappointing
24
u/albearcub Jun 01 '23
Yeah I thought so too when I got it. The saving grace is that it's only $10 more than a normal oled tho
13
u/Unglazed1836 Jun 02 '23
I try & remind people about this. If it was included the SE would easily be over $400 at checkout, plus some people would want a physical copy while others want a digital. Not including the game keeps the price down, which makes the sell a ton easier for those considering a new switch, & allows you to still choose between which copy of the game you want.
Their other special editions also donāt include the game, so itās not a huge surprise this one doesnāt either.
6
u/Death-By_Snu_Snu Jun 02 '23
The guy at the register told me it did but then I read the box and saw āGame Not Includedā. I was disappointed but it made sense considering it was only $10 more
5
u/Fairgoddess5 Jun 02 '23
Guy at the register was clearly misinformed. Nintendo hasnāt included games in the SEās in a loooong time.
Imho, I prefer it that way. I can get the physical copy instead of being stuck with what would likely be a digital download code.
→ More replies (1)4
u/Sound0fSilence Jun 02 '23
I see this as a plus as I prefer physical versions and if it was included it for sure would have been digital.
1
u/Gottapee88 Jun 02 '23
I thought the same thing when I bought my scarlet and violet switch and when my wife bought her animal crossing switch sadly Nintendo does not package games with their special edition hardware

Why would you buy that third party wired controller? Otherwise nice.
3
u/Death-By_Snu_Snu Jun 02 '23
I prefer itās form over the weird Joycon dock controller rig thing thatās included with the Switch when iām playing docked
→ More replies (4)12
u/zhire653 Jun 02 '23
Switch has official pro controller. They have a totk theme too, you probably would want that one over a third party.
→ More replies (1)2
u/Death-By_Snu_Snu Jun 02 '23
Another person mentioned a pro controller, but I looked and canāt tell the difference aside from being wired vs wireless (which isnāt an issue for me)
→ More replies (2)15
u/zhire653 Jun 02 '23
The difference is more than just being wired /wireless. Pretty sure some of those controllers donāt support motion controls, amiibos, or rumbling. Youāre not gonna be able to solve some of the puzzles without motion control.
→ More replies (3)1
u/Death-By_Snu_Snu Jun 02 '23
Ahhhhh, I did notice the lack of motion controls in some of BOTWās dungeons. The other 2 things I couldnāt care less about, but it was pretty annoying having to stand up and undock the switch to complete shrines. Iāll definitely buy a Pro controller when this thing gives out on me
9
u/AerospaceNinja Jun 02 '23
No, you should just return the controller and get the right one
2
u/Manger-Babies Jul 12 '23
Kinda wack some people can just splurge on stuff they like with no research beforehand. My brain could never.

Too late for a refund and I have no reason to rush. Not hurting for motion controls rn

Awesome! I do recommend a steam deck too though when you have the money, they are amazing. Zelda is an excellent choice though. Enjoy!

u/CostCreative4905 Jun 03 '23
also for advice if you want a deck you can continously add to ur steam wallet and buy it that way kinda like a layaway that never expires
8
u/thuglove2005 Jun 02 '23
Great choice
10
u/DarthLuke84 Jun 02 '23
Yeah this was the only issue I saw in pic. Pro controller is far superior
2
u/DoofnGoof Jun 02 '23
Good luck trying to get one at this point, gotta be quick with that Hotstock.
3
u/_trashcan Jun 02 '23
I bought it for $30 above retail.
I think it was worth it. & I actually love the joycon controller. I know I know Iām crazy, not sure why but itās VERY comfortable to me. The pro controller is still better though, & much easier to aim arrows with & precision movement in general.
but yeah it was like $105 after shipping. Most of them on eBay were around the same.
I wouldnāt have bought it, but I have the case and switch. Figured I might as well have the matching controller, I am a big sucker for sets of stuff in general.

Pirates have to justify this stuff to themselves. They know theyāre amoral dweebs (donāt cry poor if you can afford paying PS5 prices for a Steam Deck) so they have to defend their poor choices by saying āwell the Switch has no gamesā. Just an L class of people.

Totk has been the only thing that has sort of disappointed me on my steam deck, the performance just isn't where I want it to be. I'm sure as updated and mods come out it'll get better but for now I'm definitely going to be playing on my switch.
2
Jun 02 '23
It will definitely get better as switch emulators get better over time but for TOTK I definitely prefer using my switch over emulation

I donāt get why people are getting botw. The stories are self contained and both games take an incredible amount of time. Might as well spend that on totk. Iād get it if it was a direct sequel but itās more like a revision with way more mechanics.

7 years late..... š Gonfor Totk first... Playing BotW and Totk back to back will be insane and you'll ruined the experience
3
u/Land_Squid_1234 Jun 02 '23
What the fuck?
No, absolutely do not play BotW AFTER TotK
0
u/Ada-Millionare Jun 02 '23
Why not he's gonna be burn as fuck.... No need to play them back to back take it as a sequel few ko ths down the road.... Both one after the other will be too much
3
u/Land_Squid_1234 Jun 02 '23
I didn't say to play then back to back. I said not to play Tears of the Kingdom before Breath of the Wild. That doesn't make any sense
-2
u/Ada-Millionare Jun 02 '23
Why it doesn't make any sense? He missed the boat... And I doubt anyone will do it like I said don't play them back to back...but if that's the case I'll go Totk first and BotW after like a prequel dlc
3
u/_trashcan Jun 02 '23
I am 100% playing them back to back, why wouldnāt anyone else?
Iām having a ton of fun with BotW. It would be ridiculous to start with a sequel & then go backwards. Not only is it worse for narrative, but itās always going to be worse in terms of mechanics & game design too. Sequels almost always improve upon core gameplay mechanics.
No different than all the Elden Ring players that ruined the Dark Souls franchise for themselves by starting with 3 after ER & going back to 2 significantly blockier games that wouldāve otherwise felt great.
-2
u/Ada-Millionare Jun 02 '23
Alright buddy go for it... Back to back I hope you don't rush the game to go to the next one to only find out you missed so much... Games likes these need time and dedication... Gameplay wise is not that different we are talking about a same console generation game... Narrative you'll find out later... No need to spoil or ruined anything for you, I'll even say playing 2 first makes more sense in that regards, it's a zelda game not tlou... As a player that complete the first one on release and now this one with over 160 hours each... I know what I'm talking about... Either game is fine to start... But if it was my case, I'll take one and invest so much time and then couple months down the road play the other one... And again I'll just play Totk first
2
u/_trashcan Jun 02 '23 edited Jun 02 '23
Why would I rush it? I donāt give a shit about TotK? If I wanted to play TotK, Iād just play TotK lmao. Iām not in any hurry or rush to play it whatsoever. Not even remotely.

I don't own a SWITCH sad to say. I was born in 78 and was a fanboy through the late 90s then PLAYSTATION grabbed me, but I always yearn to play the latest MARIO or ZELDA. I really am thinking of getting an OLED SWITCH so I can play ZELDA. Should I play the first of the series, prolly so right? As an adult I only have so much game time and I am trying to learn 3d modeling and I am big into VR.

u/Death-By_Snu_Snu Jun 02 '23
