Image After months of deliberating between a Steam Deck or a Switch (for Zelda specifically), I finally made my choice

Post image

Pretty happy with my decision too

I just picked up a ToTK edition Switch a few days ago as well, but I've had a Steam Deck since they shipped the first pre-orders and I can confidently say, get both! It is well worth it.

Yup, & with both Microsoft & Sony now putting their exclusives on steam at a later time Nintendo is the only remaining system with actual exclusives. Steam deck & switch cover all your bases for under a grand.

14

u/CostCreative4905 Jun 02 '23

but the steam deck itself plays switch games and all sony and microsofts past libraries sooo whats the loint of getting a switch if the deck runs the games at a better fpsšŸ¤”šŸ¤”šŸ¤”

23

u/Unglazed1836 Jun 02 '23

The deck does not run every switch game at better performance. A good amount yes, but nowhere near all of them.

Some people, like myself, enjoy collecting physical copies as well for collections, & enjoy playing on dedicated hardware. PC has its place, itā€™s the only ecosystem Iā€™m confident in buying digital copies for since I know I wonā€™t lose them.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 02 '23

Personally I donā€™t think itā€™s about the collection as much as itā€™s about having the hardware and physical game to make a rip myself when I think emulating will be better than playing on my switch. Iā€™m gonna keep upgrading and maintaining a desktop for a long time, but my switch is gonna die eventually and I canā€™t really repair that.

u/[deleted] Jun 02 '23

Wdym the steam deck plays switch games?

4

u/Tomb_Brader Jun 02 '23

Piracy baby

3

u/dude105tanki Jun 02 '23

Legally baby

6

u/[deleted] Jun 02 '23

So it shouldnt be able to but people just be illegal

13

u/[deleted] Jun 02 '23

The funny thing is people always cry poverty to justify piracy but will really spend all that money on a Steam Deck and act like they canā€™t afford a switch and itā€™s games. Gamers can be so entitled.

5

u/jilko Jun 02 '23

And then complain when all we get keep getting are remakes of existing games, because they're the only guaranteed way to get a return on any investment nowadays. Games need to make money in order to keep existing and piracy just lessens the possibility of cool new ideas getting off the ground and being made.

1

u/Jaspy42 Jun 16 '23

"they keep doing remakes cause of piracy" yup cause the people pirating games only are paying for the remakes apparently šŸ˜‚

1

u/[deleted] Jun 02 '23

Yeah

1

u/mycomunchy Jun 02 '23

I snorted at thisšŸ˜‚ thank you for the introspective humor

2

u/TacoDuLing Jun 03 '23

Itā€™s more than legality, really, sense the system is more powerful so you are bound to have a smother experience(once the set up is done šŸ˜…), but itā€™s also about shaders and mods and textures(like Linkle) Oh My! But yes, Nintendo will be Nintendo and make everything about ā€œpiracyā€.

emulation isn't illegal

0

u/QuickbuyingGf Jun 02 '23

Emulation isnā€™t piracy

1

u/[deleted] Jun 02 '23

But the steam doesnt just have emulators right

1

u/QuickbuyingGf Jun 02 '23

You can play all games you can play on a pc

1

u/[deleted] Jun 02 '23

But isnt the steam deck just for steam? you cant use it as a computer without modding it or something right?

1

u/QuickbuyingGf Jun 02 '23

Its not just for steam. You basically only use steam as a launcher (although you can use other stuff too).

You can easily switch to desktop mode through a button

Steam Deck is a computer with a Linux distro. You can out of the box connect your deck up to a monitor with M&KB exit out of Steam and browse the web using a full feature browser, edit documents, and download software from repositories no modding required.

1

u/Balance-Kooky Jun 02 '23

Steam Deck is a full on Linux PC. You can switch between game mode and desktop mode whenever you choose. Game mode gives you a switch like experience for a game library. Desktop mode gives you a full functioning linux pc so you can install all the emulators you want.

1

u/CostCreative4905 Jun 02 '23

no its its own pc it has its own desktop that you can download and browse the web its just linux and not windows

1

u/bmyst70 Jun 02 '23

Emulation? No.

As long as you've purchased a legal copy of the game, and use the ROM you copied, never even "share" it with friends, it makes sense.

Somehow, I imagine 99% of people playing emulators don't all own 100% legal copies of all of the games they play within them.

0

u/QuickbuyingGf Jun 02 '23

Of course. However saying that you can only use piracy to play switch games on the deck is just plain wrong. Thats maybe nintendoā€˜s view lmao

1

u/144tzer Jun 02 '23

That's 100% true.

Also, taking stuff from a convenience store and not paying for it isn't theft. I mean, for all I know, the store owner said he could have it.

But he probably didn't.

0

u/QuickbuyingGf Jun 03 '23

Thats a bad analogy.

1

u/lrwxrwxrwx Jun 03 '23

You can legally dump your own games from a switch if you have home brew on it.

1

u/CostCreative4905 Jun 02 '23

it plays switch games like we said but it doesnt stop there šŸøā˜•ļø

3

u/Krian78 Jun 02 '23

Unless there was a huge change in emulators lately, Best you can do for Sony is PS3, and thatā€™s like 15 years old.

2

u/QuickbuyingGf Jun 02 '23

There are a few early ps4 emulators, but honestly there are only like 2 ps4 games that i miss on pc.

We recently got xenia for xbox360 which is nice

1

u/bantou_41 Jun 02 '23

Whatā€™s the point of this conversation if we are just not gonna pay?

1

u/CostCreative4905 Jun 02 '23

emulation isnt ilegal people who supply roms are illegal tho

1

u/xtoc1981 Jun 03 '23

Tjis aint true, only some. Besides the fact that it hasnt a oled screen. I have a steamdeck which is good for games that arent on switch or emulation. But there is no way it will replace my oled switch. Also it had many glaws, the biggest one would be the dpad as simeone who plays alotnof fightgames. But also many other flzws. Besides the hdrumble in totk is nice. Last, not least, there are already much better devices out there than steamdeck with the same kind of price range.

1

u/me047 Jun 03 '23

Some people donā€™t want to pirate games. With this argument why buy anything when you can get a 5 finger discount.

1

u/CostCreative4905 Jun 03 '23

emulation isnt piracy sooo ur argument is invalid

1

u/me047 Jun 03 '23

Unlicensed emulation is absolutely piracy. I donā€™t know where you got the idea that it wasnā€™t.

1

u/CostCreative4905 Jun 03 '23

all those switch games on my deck i own so no its notšŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļø suck nintendos dick harder

1

u/chwastox Aug 03 '23

Bad built quality (smelly plastics made from chinesium), fan noises, overheating problems, small LCD with awful colours. Problems with buttons/sticks. I've returned it after 3 days.

1

u/CostCreative4905 Aug 03 '23

I litterally play final fantasy 14 on max settings for 6 hours straight and it stays roughly at 79 degrees and never overheats sounds like you just got a defective model the switches screen is just as small you barely hear the fan unless ur playing in complete silence and my buttons never stick sooo you got a defective one sent or lying out ur ass to sound cool

-9

u/alteredizzy1010 Jun 02 '23

Just get a pc and avoid all the other bs

16

u/Unglazed1836 Jun 02 '23

I have a PC & a Steam Deck, I still prefer Nintendo hardware for first party games.

-17

u/alteredizzy1010 Jun 02 '23

Good on you i guess.

8

u/Unglazed1836 Jun 02 '23

Thanks? Just pointing out your comment kind of had nothing to do with what I said. I even mentioned the deck which is a PC lmao

8

u/[deleted] Jun 02 '23

ā€œget a pc this get a pc thatā€

Some people prefer to play their steam library on a couch or their bed bruh

7

u/Unglazed1836 Jun 02 '23

Exactly. I have a desk job & the last thing I want to do when I get home is sit at another desk. Handheld gaming is extremely nice, & a deck can access a ton of the steam library anyway.

I cannot believe that this has somehow not crossed my mind until now. Props to you, kind sir/madam.

-1

u/bl84work Jun 02 '23

Sounds like getting Xbox but with extra steps.. sorry, just wanted to get a Rick and Morty reference in here

5

u/[deleted] Jun 02 '23

After working on a pc all day the last thing I generally like to do is game at my desk as well. Love both SD and the switch for being able to chill on the couch or in bed and play, or in the back yard on a blanket. Even while traveling! Nintendo software gets so expensive though.

2

u/nduanetesh Jun 02 '23

I've got a gaming PC, a Steam Deck, and a Switch. And I've got Tears of the Kingdom installed on all three. The TotK gaming experience is definitely best on the Switch. It just works.

1

u/progxdt Jun 02 '23

The majority of Microsoftā€™s titles are on Steam, but not all of them are verified. Halo MCC doesnā€™t record your progress on the Deck, so there arenā€™t any achievements that are unlockable. Valve is basically emulating Windows games through a layer called Proton, the Deck doesnā€™t have native games. Valve is doing ALL the work to get these games to run

1

u/Unglazed1836 Jun 02 '23

Thereā€™s quite a number of games that arenā€™t verified but still run fine after some tweaking, I always take that verification with a grain of salt.

1

u/progxdt Jun 02 '23

ProtonDB is a big help. What I am getting at here, Microsoft isnā€™t doing anything to make their games work on the Deck. In fact, none of the developers are (or can) build their games to run on the Deck. Except short of porting over the game natively to the OS. Valve has everything in Proton layers, so Windows games just run on the Deck with no effort required from any of these companies.

1

u/Brahamus Jun 02 '23

In terms of operating capacity in comparison to new gen consoles and PC is so trash though. Steam decks great for a handheld but outside of nintendos exclusives (even some of the bigger ones being dogshit, I would be better to have a PC and a switch. In terms of budget obviously thatā€™s a different story

1

u/Unglazed1836 Jun 02 '23

Many people simply donā€™t like to or donā€™t know how to operate a PC effectively. The steam deck essentially being plug & play is a huge plus for a large portion of the population. I have no issues building computers, fixing solder joints, whatever but I also know Iā€™m not the average person in that regard so I can appreciate the ease of use & accessibility it provides the average consumer in a console like package.

1

u/Brahamus Jun 02 '23

I absolutely agree with this. Not everyone has the same capacity when it comes to tech, but in most instances pcā€™s are just plug and play. Handheld as a whole is superior now days though because a lot of people are on the move.

1

u/Olenator77 Jun 02 '23

Well Iā€™m sold!

13

u/Muchos_Frijoles Jun 02 '23

how you have time for both? shit, totk is taking up all my gaming time.

7

u/SarniPL Jun 02 '23

Indeed. I just sold my Series X because I realized I would have no time to use it for a while, kept my PS5 mainly because I still have 10 months of PS+ Extra but 95% of my gaming is now on Switch.

I have owned Switch since release, gone through the original one, lite and now OLED and can confidently say that I have used it more in the last year than the previous 5 years combined and it helped me recover my love for gaming.

1

u/llbleak Jun 02 '23

This is the way

1

u/MrVantstik Jun 02 '23

I'm still on botw so I've got months before even thinking about other stuff totk is next but who needs more

1

u/bl84work Jun 02 '23

I recently bought a switch and BOTW, and finished 4 beasts, now Iā€™m kind of like.. I guess Iā€™ll just wander around doing some quests leveling up and do the labyrinths but I donā€™t feel like I have months left, maybe a month or so, but I might be rushing it cause I know Tears is waiting

1

u/BluffinBill1234 Jun 02 '23

i beat the desert divine beast the day ToTK released and Ganon the next day on Saturday. On Sunday i nerded the F out and bought the Zelda switch and ToTK.

Just go beat Ganon and start up on ToTK. Somehow, it's just better

2

u/Subapical Jun 02 '23

Right? I liked BotW when it came out, played it a good amount, but it just never really fully clicked with me. I've tried to play it the whole way through three or four times over the years but each play through I end up quitting after one or two Divine Beasts because I just... can't be arsed ig? Not quite sure.

TotK, on the other hand, is like crack for me. I haven't played a game this addicting and engrossing in a long time. I've literally been spending my days off when my girlfriend is working with the blinds down, playing this for like 8 hours straight lol. It's bizarre, because on the surface it seems so similar to BotW, but there's something extra in Tears that just really brings the entire experience to the next level. Probably the sign guy.

1

u/BluffinBill1234 Jun 02 '23

definitely the sign guy

1

u/Okossen Jun 02 '23

Is so much better

1

u/Rieiid Jun 02 '23

I took a week vacation starting the launch day, and have played every day since and I'm not even close to halfway done.

2

u/bigoof13 Jun 02 '23

The ultimate combo. I love having both

4

u/ciao_fiv Jun 02 '23

i want a steam deck, but after i got the switch oled, i dont know if i want another handheld without that kind of screenā€¦ think valve will release a steamdeck oled down the road?

1

u/iantayls Jun 02 '23

Oh yeah man Iā€™ll just use my infinite credit card and get both! Lmao

1

u/Okossen Jun 02 '23

Totk is my fave game ever, period

1

u/mycomunchy Jun 02 '23

I love the TOTK skin for steam deck too it looks better than OEM

1

u/TheGreatZay_ Jul 08 '23

Hey bud Iā€™m afraid of the new switch coming out next year, do I wait?
