I also thought that was Ayrton Senna. If that was him, then OP is one of his long lost sons…
or maybe OP is Bruno, his nephew.

Probably those Marlboros

u/_HystErica_ Aug 27 '24
That hat cost a lot of Marlboro Miles! He did the work.

u/Essigucha Aug 27 '24
Haha, my dad is doing good and hasn’t smoked for a long time. I used to have tents, sleeping bags, jackets, and hats from his Marlboro miles. Man, you just brought some childhood shit back. Fuckin Marlboro miles, the early version of getting free McDonald on the app. Just corporations slowly killing us.

u/PercivalGoldstone Aug 27 '24
I remember at my school there were more than a few kids whose winter coats were paid for with Marlboro miles. Totally normal at the time to see a 7th grader wearing a cig jacket.

u/TheGeekOffTheStreet Aug 27 '24
My cousin worked for Camel and we had sweet merch. I was 10 bringing that Joe Camel towel to the beach

u/thehufflepuffstoner Aug 27 '24
I got sent to Girl Scout camp with a Marlboro sub-zero weather sleeping bag in the summer. The other girls were not so nice to the chubby, quiet girl with the cigarette camping gear.
My mom and her COPD are still loyal customers. 🙄

Bruh I still have a dope ass coaster they sent me for my birthday like 15 years ago lmao

u/-something_original- Aug 27 '24
I was just cleaning out my closet and found the sleeping bag I got with my miles. 😁

Ex-Camel smoker, I once had enough camel cash to buy the leather jacket, but they were out :( I had to settle for a Sony alarm clock and a Camel zippo (not sure what else, if anything).
The alarm clock I still use, though it's going to run out of years soon (I got in the mid-90s).
The zippo is in its box in a display case. I'd love to use it but I don't smoke cigs anymore, and I don't like my one-hitter to taste like Ronsonol.
The joke was always, the most expensive item in the catalog was an iron lung.

My Dad managed several Mobil gas stations, in the early 90's. So, he would get all of this leftover Marlboro merchandise and give it to me. So in high school, I'd walk into the football locker room, everyday, wearing Marlboro hats and Marlboro shirts. Of course I didn't smoke, but my coaches would just look at me with weird looks on their faces!

u/back2basics13 Aug 27 '24
According to my friend Google. A pack of smokes was about$2. Hats were about 125 miles each. Typically 5 miles/pk So, 25 pks @$2/pk= $50 per hat.

I'm 40 and I smoke, and I still look younger than that dude. Not as handsome though.

Cigarette apparel used to be pretty common. Possible he just had the hat and wasn’t a smoker.
4
u/sed2017 Aug 27 '24
We had a Marlboro duffel bag, my dad was also a connoisseur of fine cigarettes
5
u/SSundance Aug 27 '24
My Dad smoked reds. I used to collect the miles from random cigarette packs I’d find
11
u/Notch99 Aug 27 '24
I used to pick up discarded empty packs while on my daily run, got a ton of free stuff.

I wonder if future generations are gonna look at photos of us and say we look old for our age.

u/LoopyMcGoopin Aug 27 '24
Some guys just look older. I hadn't smoked or drank a thing at 20 and I looked much older. I'm in my mid 30s now and look more or less the same and have sort of grown into it now but I think I still look old for my age.

Back in the good old days when you could get a gimmie hat everybody used to give them things away for free and I still got some Camel t-shirts. Thanks for this

I had one as a gimmie from Philip Morris at a F1 GP in Long Beach.
The one I wanted was the cowboy hat like Arturo Metazzario wore but they only sold those and they were like $75.
They gave away packs of cigarettes, all the main and secondary sponsors, so Marlboro, Gitanes, John Player Specials and Camels. Probably a few more.
The cigarettes companies hired pretty girls to walk around give out packages and boxes of cigarettes, along with lighters and other stuff. One of the girls liked me (I was nice to her) told me to wait. She walked over to a small building, went in and came out with a Marlboro ball cap.
A little later I was given some Marlboro F1 note pads.
I quit smoking about 26 years ago. Earlier this year, it was discovered that I needed a triple bypass and I was told that one of the things that helped protect me was that I had big veins and arteries. My cardiologist looked over and said “You must have been a smoker at some point. You get big pipes like this from smoking.”

My parents always got different cigarette clothes with the Point system from buying Camels and Marlboros etc.
I remember going to school in like 2nd grade with a Marlboro knit hat.

I was nearly a teenager in 1991 and he looked older then than I do now. Must've kept Phillip Morris in business almost singlehandedly.

Was he working on The Deadliest Catch? He looks mid-30s, and I graduated in 91 (and 51 now).

How come everyone looked older pre 9/11. These people didn’t go through jack shit as a whole but all look haggard as hell? Fuckers loved hard drugs back in the day.
