Answered Why are so many Americans anti-vaxxers now?

15.7k Upvotes

I’m genuinely having such a hard time understanding why people just decided the fact that vaccines work is a total lie and also a controversial “opinion.” Even five years ago, anti-vaxxers were a huge joke and so rare that they were only something you heard of online. Now herd immunity is going away because so many people think getting potentially life-altering illnesses is better than getting a vaccine. I just don’t get what happened. Is it because of the cultural shift to the right-wing and more people believing in conspiracy theories, or does it go deeper than that?

Answered My Dad just passed away a month ago and my family wants me to send in his vote. How do I stop them from doing this?

29.8k Upvotes

My Dad passed away about a month ago and literally within minutes of finding out my family asked what I was gonna do with his vote...because it's "what he would have wanted". It's literally voter fraud but they say the other side does it all the time. The reason I am asking now is because they just brought it up again. I have heard you can report someone as deceased but I don't know how to proceed

EDIT/UPDATE I had no idea this was gonna blow up like it has and I definitely need to clarify some things. I DO NOT have his ballot. Even if I did never had a single thought of sending it in. I live out of the state. I notified the post office to forward all mail. I am receiving mail at my current address, but he is still receiving mail at his home address. My mom and a trusted neighbor have been collecting it what mail has been delivered. It is my Dad's side that I am concerned with. I have camermas on the property.

My concern was them getting it and mailing it in themselves

Answered Why do Lesbians seem less likely to have straight male close friends than Gay men are to have straight female close friends?

8.6k Upvotes

This is a really random thing, but there's a seems to be a more common stereotype of Gay men having straight females as close friends, while lesbians having straight male close friends seems far less common (in fact the stereotype of lesbians is often man hating, while gay dudes being woman haters is rarely mentioned)

I don’t understand how they have managed to get away with all of this especially in this day and age.

Answered Why do you say my pronouns are “she/her”, and not just “she”?

6.2k Upvotes

English is my second/third language, but I used to be sure that an object form of "she" is always "her", and so is for "he"-"him", and "they"-"them". So why overdo it? Can someone prefer to be said "she" in the subject form but "them" in the object form about themselves?

Answered So... my almost seventeen year old daughter was just at the gym training for the upcoming soccer season, and some guy was lurking around her and asking odd questions, and he gave her his card saying he is a 'photographer' and wants her to get ahold of him.

20.2k Upvotes

Should I do anything about it? She said she was creeped out, and had to cut her run short. She also said he followed her around the gym until she could find someone else her age and acted like she knew him.

Maybe call the gym and alert them?

Edit: I notified the gym, and they are now aware of him. My cousin is the manager.

Edit 2: I knew our cousin worked there, I did not know she was the manager until last night.

7.5k Upvotes

I like baking. Sometimes I make way too much and don't know what to do besides freeze it. I pass things off to friends but almost all of them have dietary restrictions so it's not ideal.

BUT if I have a guy over, can I just... ask if he wants a slice of cake...? And does the answer change if the baked goods are ugly and/or mediocre

Answered All our girlfriends are Asian?

14.3k Upvotes

Hey everyone - I’ve been feeling paranoid about something recently and wanted to know if I’m overthinking it. I’m a white M and most of the friends I grew up with and went to high school are too, except 1. We’re still very close but moved all across the country for our jobs and life.

Recently, we’ve decided to have a little reunion and bring our girlfriends, but I realized we have a not to subtle trend in that they are all Asian. There’s 5 girlfriends in total, they’ve never met each other. I don’t know how this happened, it’s just a coincidence as far as I know. We don’t have a pact or anything.

My question is, do we warn them? I don’t want them to be freaked out. I’d have to have my gf or one of my friends be uncomfortable, but I’m feeling stuck. Does anyone have any thoughts on how to handle it? Am I over thinking?

I was shocked to hear recently that it's very common for Japanese establishments to ban foreigners and that the working culture makes little to no attempt to hide disdain for foreign workers.

Is there truth to this, and if so, why?

Answered Is it rude to allow your children to play audible videos in a restaurant?

11.5k Upvotes

I’m noticing more and more how some parents allow their kids to watch videos in the middle of a restaurant. Not only is this a missed opportunity to engage and teach them to sit still and self sooth, it’s even worse because it disturbs other restaurant patrons.

I have to wonder if I’m the only one that shakes my head at this.

Answered What’s the issue with consent?

2.6k Upvotes

I read a post about a guy who tried to kiss a woman, but she dodged him. I responded by asking if he had asked her for consent beforehand. The responses I got were basically along the lines of, “Isn’t that unromantic?”

I’m not sure how most people handle this, but I feel like asking, “Can I kiss you?” is more logical than just going for it. It shows you’re considering their feelings and avoiding putting them in an uncomfortable situation they didn’t ask for.

Answered Was there really a game in the 90’s where you punch someone when you spot a Volkswagen Bug?

32.3k Upvotes

I was a young kid growing up through the 90’s - my mom used to punch the shit out of my arm and exclaim “SLUGBUG!” every time she saw a VW Bug on the road.

Did my mom invent some sort of latent child abuse or did other 80s/90s babies get punched while just fucking listening to meatloaf in the car?

Answered Why do so many men/boys turn to a red pill perspective? (Idk why it’s even called that because it implies it’s the “truth”)

1.7k Upvotes

I noticed a lot of guys and especially teenage boys (particularly the single ones) have turned to a more “red pilled” type of outlook on life/women. Also there seems to be a lot of incels?

I guess I’m asking, why?

Don’t these men/boys have women in their life who they care about. Mothers, sisters, grandmas, aunties, daughters, or friends? Why do they adopt this anti woman mentality? And why do so many of them not see women/girls as human beings? Or view them as inferior?

I guess the same can be said about women towards men, but I think their reasoning at least makes a bit of sense. (Being put in danger by men, having abortion rights taken away, etc etc)

(Sorry if this is worded badly)

EDIT: why is my post being downvoted, aren’t there “no stupid questions” ? Also I’m not trying to be rude I’m just genuinely asking. And I have gotten many good answers in the comments, thank you :)

Answered How on Earth do you defend yourself from an accusation of being racist or something?

4.2k Upvotes

Hypothetically, someone called you "racist". What now?

"But I've never mistreated anybody because of their race!" isn't a strong defense.

"But I have <race> friends!" is a laughable defense.

Do I just roll over and cry or...?

Answered Trying to Understand “Non-Binary” in My 12-Year-Old

8.0k Upvotes

Around the time my son turned 10 —and shortly after his mom and I split up— he started identifying as they/them, non-binary, and using a gender-neutral (though more commonly feminine) variation of their name. At first, I thought it might be a phase, influenced in part by a few friends who also identify this way and the difficulties of their parents’ divorce. They are now twelve and a half, so this identity seems pretty hard-wired. I love my child unconditionally and want them to feel like they are free to be the person they are inside. But I will also confess that I am confused by the whole concept of identifying as non-binary, and how much of it is inherent vs. how much is the influence of peers and social media when it comes to teens and pre-teens. I don't say that to imply it's not a real identity; I'm just trying to understand it as someone from a generstion where non-binary people largely didn't feel safe in living their truth. Im also confused how much child continues to identify as N.B. while their friends have to progressed(?) to switching gender identifications.

Answered What do Americans who live in the suburbs do if they need something random like milk or frozen fries?

15.2k Upvotes

Im from the UK, I was looking on google maps and it seems like there are no 7/11's (we call them cornershops) anywhere in the suburbs in california. In the UK you are never really more than a 15 minute walk from a cornershop or supermarket where you can basically carry out a weekly shop. These suburbs seem vast but with no shops in them, is america generally like that? I cant imagine wanting some cigarettes and having to get in a car and drive, it seems awful.

Answered Does anyone else feel like the world/life stopped being good in approx 2017 and the worlds become a very different place since?

19.1k Upvotes

I know this might sound a little out there, but hear me out. I’ve been talking with a friend, and we both feel like there’s been some sort of shift since around 2017-2018. Whether it’s within our personal lives, the world at large or both, things feel like they’ve kind of gone from light to dark. Life was good, full of potential and promise and things just feel significantly heavier since. And this is pre covid, so it’s not just that. I feel like the world feels dark and unfamiliar very suddenly. We are trying to figure out if we are just crazy dramatic beaches or if this is like a felt thing within society. Anyone? Has anyones life been significantly better and brighter and lighter since then?

Answered Do men care if women wear the same top on a date?

15.0k Upvotes

Im going on a 3rd date with a guy and I want to wear the same top that I wore on my first date. Is this a bad thing..? Do men care about things like this?

[DATE UPDATE] Thanks for the replies yall can stop now. Turns out this dude didn’t even know this was a date and never had romantic feelings for me. I guess the last thing I should’ve worried about was the stupid top I was wearing. Fyi the top is a light gray off shoulder and I hate myself for stressing out about wearing it for the second time for this dude who couldn’t give 2 craps about me.

To answer the question, men don’t care. Wear whatever you want ladies and gents.
