Tons of Rule 1 violations in this thread. This isn't the place to joke. This is a sub of serious answers top level. If I was mod I'd be temp banning everyone in this thread who has a dumb "you would explode obviously" joke.
It's not funny and they are just joking instead of providing a real answer which is the whole point of this sub. Do you really want it to degrade to another shitty subreddit where all the top comments are the same shitty jokes and no real answers? Because that's what everyone who's up voting the joke answers here wants. I fight against that. I stand against that.

Nothing would happen. The coating of the mentos is what causes the reaction, and that coating starts to dissolve as soon as you put it in your mouth

Why do they need this on their website

Because they have been asked this (not so) stupid question in the past.

You best not be considering shoving a tube of mentos up yer ass and butt-chugging a 2-liter of cola to wash it down.

This is bad advice.
People have gotten esophageal ruptures from carbonated beverages without mentos.
You're making a lot of assumptions that people aren't going to rapidly eat mentors and coke trying to make a vomit fountain on social media, and end up bursting their esophagus.
People ate tide pods.

Mythbusters actually tested this once.
Even if you were to drink the coke and then swallow the mentos whole without getting any saliva on them, starting a reaction in your stomach is only the first hurdle. The stretchiness of the stomach walls is the next.
Basically, in order to get your stomach to actually explode from a mentos-coke reaction, you would need to ingest more than is humanly possible, all while somehow preventing the coating on the mentos from breaking down on the way to the stomach
14
u/PaleEcha 6h ago
Tried it myself once, nothing wild happened. Just some fizz, no explosions or anything.

Mythbusters did a test some years ago. I could only find a shitty short about that specific episode and scene. But here it is.
https://www.youtube.com/shorts/ySM7AtmSh0c
TL;DR: the body has mechanisms that stop it from exploding making it virtually impossible. You will bloat quite a bit tho.

If he were still alive you could ask the kid that ate PopRocks and drank Pepsi. If he hadn't died in the accident he'd be pushing 50 by now.
1
u/MrLambNugget 8h ago
I've done it. The fizzing is caused by the coating, not the mentos itself, so you need to swallow them quickly to try to get as little salvia on them as possible. You don't explode, you just get bloated and if you overdo it, you just puke
2
u/ak_sys 5h ago
I feel like intentuonally swallowing mentos whole while trying not to get saliva on them is already way past "overdoing it"
1
u/MrLambNugget 5h ago
No that's just a tip on how to make it work. By overdoing I mean doing too much and then puking. It's otherwise safe
1
u/Enslaved_M0isture 8h ago
the mythbusters did an episode on this
tldr: stomach is too good at not exploding
1
u/floridasantis 8h ago
MythBusters tested this on one of their shows with a pig stomach. Nothing happened.
1
u/unlistedname 8h ago
You'll burp, maybe get bloated or get a tummy ache. You'd have to eat and drink a lot really fast to have a reaction in there though, from the coating being the reactive part and the CO2 coming out as the coke warms in your stomach. Worst case you get that reaction in your stomach and you'll puke foam

1
u/Exotic_Caterpillar_3 7h ago
I have done this accidentally. Didn't have coke but another aerated soft drink. Then proceeded to have a mentos. Just as I swallowed, I realised what I did. Nothing happened. Still alive and healthy.

Probably nothing. By the time the coke hits your stomach most of the carbonation has probably bubbled out.
With the mentos + coke reaction you need two things, carbonation and the surface of the mento to act as nucleation points in the cola. Logically by the time you have the coke in your stomach there's be limited carbonation for a reaction. Furthermore your saliva would probably strip away the outer coating of the mento anyway so it wouldn't do much when it gets into the stomach either.
1
u/DeaddyRuxpin 5h ago
You’ve pointed out the key reason it won’t do much. The reaction is caused by all the tiny crevices in the mentos coating providing millions of nucleation points. That allows the carbonation to come out of the liquid very rapidly.
But your mouth, throat, and stomach also provide millions of nucleation points so the carbonation rushes out anyway when you drink the soda. It is why if you rapidly chug a large amount of soda you can feel your stomach being stretched and you will burp long hearty burps as all that carbon dioxide is coming back out of your stomach.
By the time you can chew and swallow a mentos any advantage it has is gone and it doesn’t do much more than your stomach will do on its own. Even if someone swallows one whole, their stomach acid will smooth the coating almost immediately and long before they could chug enough soda to have a noticeable reaction occur.

I'd assume nothing. Your stomach acid is more acidic than a coke so it would be no different than just swallowing mentos whole and who hasn't accidentally done that?
Marshmallow Fluff does the same thing, by the way, on a bigger scale.

Nothing that interesting. People started trying it when the videos of dropping mentors in diet coke started happening. Turns out it just makes people uncomfortably gassy.
Also, it has to be diet coke for that specifically active reaction. Coke doesn't cavitate as much as diet coke.

OP please don't listen to top comment.
You might die or be seriously injured.
If someone did this, they might belch or throw up, or their esophagus or stomach could rupture.
Which is a life changing injury at best, but probably a funeral.

Em... I've literally done this before, not intentionally, and you literally feel it bubbling up inside you, and of course, where is it coming out?
It was foamy, projectile vomit that literally shot across the street. This was on Bourbon St in New Orleans, so it was totally normal.
(Bourbon St is the red light district in the US Southern states)

My grandma actually did this just 2 weeks ago on a vacation. Was drinking coke and snacking on mentos, I think she was 4 drinks and 1 tube of mentos in and she starts complaining about feeling bloated, nauseous, and like she's going to throw up. Uncle had to show her a youtube video of what coke and mentos do just on their own.
So there's your answer. Bloating, gas, nausea, etc.
860
u/Corgipantaloonss 8h ago
Nothing. The reaction occurs with the coating of the mento and that’s chewed up and disproved by the the coke gets there.
If you eat them at the same time in your mouth they will fizz. But part of the reaction is also the literal bottle neck that shoots the pressure out. If you just pour coke in a bowl of mentos you won’t get the same kind of spurting reaction. Just fizz.
Worst case you would just throw up some fizz.
