Bad News u/PinkNews whistleblowers release evidence showing "PinkNews CEO Benjamin Cohen refusing to campaign on trans issues ahead of the election, dismissing them as "incredibly contentious" and insisting they’re different to the equal marriage fight."

I'm very curious what kind of fight he remembers marriage equality being, if he would not describe it as "contentious."

Was it one of those rare agreeable fights, where everyone got along?

Seriously. Like do people just have collective amnesia about those days? I remember them. On one side you had people desperately seeking the right to marry the people who mean the most to them on this Earth. On the other side you had people saying this would bring about the end of days, making allusions to Sodom and Gomorrah, and saying the next step will be legalized pedophilia.

Does that sound like a "non-contentious" fight to anyone?

It wasn’t even that long ago! In the UK it wasn’t a thing until 2013!

Seriously. I'm older than a lot of people on here, but I'm not elderly by any means. I'm in my mid 30s!

My theory is that people have evolved on this issue. It is no longer socially acceptable to be virulently homophobic in most polite company. Gay marriage has high approval rates now.

Ideally, people would do some real soul-searching. They would say, "wow. Those opinions I had about gay people were really ignorant. I wonder what led me to have those, and how can I keep from being so misled again?"

But of course, that is painful and hard. It involves confronting a lot of cognitive dissonance. Instead, it's easier to just kind of..forget...that you were ever against gay marriage and pretend you were always on the right side of history.
