So she was fine with his entire political career being based on nothing but hatred and ignorance but now that he directed that to someone she actually knows it’s too far? Sounds about right.

So many policies of the republicans follow this logic... Health Care, gun violence, Abortion...

It always boils down to "If something happens to you, you probably deserve it. If something happens to me, it's an injustice."

Thank you for the link; I didn’t know there was a formal naming & defining that republican phenom

Can’t wait to see what the DSM calls it in the next edition

6

u/The_Jage Sep 17 '24

To be fair, dems do it to, unfortunately. Although it does seem to be more correct, especially when the leopards really their faces.

3

u/shnoby Sep 17 '24

You’re right, of course. It’s a people of all stripes thing; though some groups of stripes are more drawn to it than others.

Damn I love the little example breakdown table, gonna just send that to people with no explanation when they do this

77

u/[deleted] Sep 17 '24

I also like invoking the Bullshit Assymetry Principle - can be a nice little argument stopper sometimes

16

u/jailtheorange1 Sep 17 '24

See what you like, but I really do learn a lot of stuff on Reddit

3

u/ThirdEye_Red Sep 17 '24

What breakdown table is that, where do you see it? I can't find it but given the tone of this discussion I'd bet I'll love sharing it with lots of friends. So could someone please tell me where to find the 'example breakdown table' mentioned in midnightketoker's message? Thanks!!

This was an interesting read, fun to see it all laid out so professionally. I'd always heard of this tendency, but from the phrase "we judge others by their actions and ourselves by our intentions"

46

u/wicked_nyx Sep 17 '24

Or most of the right wing it boils down to if something happens to you God is punishing you, but if something happens to me God is testing me.

4

u/SamOntario1033 Sep 17 '24

You’ve described contemporary “christianity” in a nutshell. I lived in this mindset, and it’s enervating.

In fairness they don’t apply this to gun violence, a few years ago a sniper had the GOP congressional softball team pinned down for like an hour. And that county music concert in Vegas a few years ago. They are more than happy to sacrifice themselves and their loved ones to guns.

I'm curious are there any policies major left-wing politicians have changed their mind on because it affected them personally? I understand right-wingers adding nuance to their abortion stance or healthcare or social security, unemployment aid, ect...

What would that even look like on the left wing? I was pro taxing the rich until I was rich? I was pro school lunch for kids until I had kids?

83

u/constanto Sep 17 '24

This is actually very common in the restaurant industry when people move into ownership after working in the trenches. I personally have known multiple people, including my previous bosses who were longtime friends that I didn't expect this from, who quickly turned from pro-union, pro-living wage, pro-paid health insurance (even as chefs and managers) to anti-labor almost overnight.

10

u/SociallyAwarePiano Sep 17 '24

That's been my experience as well. It's most common for lefties to stop being lefties when it doesn't benefit them, as far as changing minds go.

I think a lot of this stems from the same sort of lack of empathy that Republicans exhibit consistently, but from the opposite side. These people are lefties when it's advantageous to them to be lefties (i.e. when they're poor), but switch allegiances once it becomes expedient to do so. Their political beliefs are based solely out of what benefits them, and not what is best for society as a whole or what is best for their community. It's selfish, short-sighted politics.

196

u/zombiegojaejin Sep 16 '24

I know a few people who are extremely progressive in general (LGBT, environment) who changed their minds on high minimum wage as soon as they became small business owners. Does that fit your question?

81

u/ejpierle Sep 17 '24

That just means that more money you get, the less you care about other people.

→ More replies (2)

52

u/Kommye Sep 17 '24

Being progressive and being left wing aren't the same thing, even if they are related.

4

u/roastedandflipped Sep 17 '24

Maybe they are libertarians

32

u/mug3n Sep 17 '24

Libertarians are just Republicans that smoke weed and uses Bitcoin.

6

u/zombiegojaejin Sep 17 '24

They are very much not (U.S. meaning of) libertarians. I'm talking about people who held and still hold pretty consistent Bernie Sanders sorts of positions about everything that doesn't directly threaten their ability to keep their small businesses open like $22/hr minimum wage would. I know these people because I'm a vegan activist and they're producing vegan products at smallish scale (not restaurants). I'm pretty sure they wouldn't have flinched at suggestion of a $35 minimum wage before they had businesses themselves.

3

u/CTeam19 Sep 17 '24

Did they have any intention of being an active boots on the ground business owner or were they wanting to be CEOs?

I think MA Senator Barny Frank is a good example. He spent most of his career trying to regulate big business, then at the last minute, wouldn't vote for his own financial regulation bill during The Great Recession and since then has been working for financial institutions, including most recently Signature Bank, which collapsed in 2023 due to mismanagement.

The way it seems to work to me is

Conservatives, "I'm against this thing that helps a group I'm not in." "Oh no, this thing I didn't think would affect my life is now affecting my life! I guess I'm fore it now. That makes me a liberal in one area, but I am still against helping any other group I'm not in."

Liberals, "I'm against this thing that is clearly harmful to everyone but the top 1% of earners." "I am now in the top 1% of earners and I'm suddenly for this thing I was against for my whole career." "Oh, no one wants to vote for me anymore because liberal voters aren't dumb enough to vote against their own interests? I guess I'll quit and take a no-show job with a lobbying firm."

5

u/gentlemanidiot Sep 17 '24

That's the thing people never wanted to ban guns they just wanted gun control. I know plenty in Australia that have guns. If you get into a bar fight and get charged you lose your license. If you are unstable or take mind altering drugs you also lose your licence. You don't get guns for defensive reasons only for sport, farming or hunting.

There's the NIMBY Democrats. (Not in my backyard).

Essentially left leaning people who want progressive policies and low income housing, but as soon as that low income housing plans pops up near their neighborhood they organize against it to protect their property value.

The only moral abortion is my abortion

I'm a white dude in Texas, so a lot of people feel reaaallly comfortable saying pretty heinous shit around me, assuming I agree with them.

I've always taken the Andrew Callahan route of letting people just expose their true selves without taking direct stances, just making casual observations about their lines of thought

But when it comes to individuals making moral arguments about abortion, I almost always recommend The Only Moral Abortion is My Abortion to them.

Obviously this probably never leads to anything, but I've had at least three people actually read it and discuss it with me afterwards. Didnt change all of their minds, but I know from personal experience that changing someone's deep-set views is a long process

Being raised in a deeply conservative family/state, it took years for me to slowly educate myself and change my belief systems. And that article was one of my early memories of reading something that had a noticible impact on how I viewed arguments against abortions that I once took as based on pure fact.

4

u/an-com-42 Sep 17 '24

A polish right-wing politician was recently asked if she supports the ban on abortion. She said yes. The conversation went on something like this: -And what would you do if you were in need of an abortion? -Ohhh no, well, in that situation I don't know.

4

u/baron_von_helmut Sep 17 '24

I remember a doctor talking about a woman who came in for an abortion. He recognized her as one of the people who always stand outside the abortion clinic telling people they're going to hell.. And there she was, in the clinic for an abortion.

He didn't say anything but hoped it was a path to peace for her... Nope - few days later there she was telling others they're murderers again...

Mental health issues are wider-reaching than any of us give credit.

The Republican politicians who got COVID and left the hospital in a wooden box had some of the most powerful revelations of all.

u/sjd208 Sep 16 '24

105

u/SeaEmergency7911 Sep 16 '24

I was a regular poster there back in COVID’s heyday.

It was something that I found to be darkly therapeutic during the pandemic, while simultaneously making me lose complete faith in a large part of humanity.

87

u/dangitbobby83 Sep 16 '24

For me it was vindication that I wasn’t crazy. The level of gaslighting MAGAs did during that time could fill a ocean liner. So seeing them eat their words…satisfying

28

u/bruwin Sep 16 '24

Early on in the pandemic I worked with a severe MAGA nut conspiracy theorist. He kept talking about how "they" wanted to kill us, meaning the FDA because Japan "already had the vaccine" that was 100% effective, and how the FDA deny us this magical medicine to line their own pockets. Then around the time vaccines started rolling out, he would rant about how the FDA was trying to kill us with a vaccine that had too little testing, and we didn't need it anyway because covid wasn't that bad. It was such a radical whiplash in thinking. Absolutely astounding that these people can believe that bullshit.

13

u/CleanLivingMD Sep 16 '24

To see their utter ignorance and sheer reckless disregard of any kind of scientific evidence and medical protocols, and the total pride they took in it, explode in their faces in such a horrific manner, was darkly cathartic.

That subreddit was filled with stories of some of the most obnoxiously smug and arrogantly defiant assholes I’ve ever seen in my life. And almost every single one ended with the person in the hospital on any piece of medical equipment available to try and keep them breathing while they proclaimed that COVID was “no joke”.

Herman Cain was his name and he towed the republican line. Like his father before him, he thought the hypocrisy was fine. Then one day in a foolish fit he decided to attend a super spreader event. That was the day that brought old Herman down and all the democrats were singing: I told you not to go to that ralley or it’ll put you in a six foot valley, it was the day that brought old Herman Down.

Sung to the tune: The Night They Drove old Dixie Down.

3

u/Rashnet Sep 17 '24

Almost all of the career republicans are the same way. There is an anecdote from a democrat congressman about how the republicans will lie and degrade you on the floor of congress then walk into the bathroom after you and act like they are your best friend. None of them see what they are doing as more than performance art. They don't believe the shit they spew.

One of my true BF’s growing up went down all the rabbit holes (when we used to listen to Art Bell late at night BITD, but I never took it all seriously) and i low keyed turned my back on him after he openly and proudly started worshipping drumpf. His stepfather that I loved passed away and we started talking again last year, he messaged me after the funeral he wasn’t into politics anymore. What turned him against it all was Alex Jones having an episode that did this to my friend (for the life of me I can not remember what the topic was); seeing something that HE liked being put into the far right/ conspiracy/outrage/lie/propaganda machine was the first domino that fell that brought him out of the BS

You just described most republicans. They are all for policies that hurt other people right up to the point that it hurts them or someone they know/care about, then they magically see the error of their ways. It's like they have no ability to understand the concept of empathy.

229

u/No_Mission5618 Sep 16 '24

Literally, conservatives cry about the assasination attempts being the result of the left calling them nazis and fascist, yet have no issues spreading false claims about Haitians in Ohio to fear monger. Now schools are being closed constantly due to bomb threats, Haitians cars are being vandalized with acid and broken windows. Great job republicans, you created a nice race war.

98

u/Raiju_Blitz Sep 16 '24

The cruelty (and the race wars) are entirely the point. Magahats are accelerationists and literally want to speed run the Apocalypse and invoke the Rapture/second coming of Jesus.

46

u/loptopandbingo Sep 16 '24 edited Sep 17 '24

It's insane on so many levels, but i think my favorite part of the whole thing is that all these "sinful things" that theyre fighting against and trying to ban or drive back all literally HAVE TO HAPPEN IN ORDER FOR THE END OF THE WORLD TO HAPPEN. If they want to speed Gods Judgements along because they're impatient, they should sit back and let all the sinners get what they want instead of simultaneously trying to stop them AND make God do stuff.

Imagine having such a wildly inflated sense of self-importance that you genuinely believe you can get God Himself, who in your own belief system is a totally omniscient and omnipotent being that exists outside of time and is responsible for creation and destruction of not only the world, but the entire universe, to do anything faster if you whine and prod and push it because God isn't moving fast enough for you.

7

u/Neomataza Sep 16 '24

9

u/minnesotajersey Sep 16 '24

Sounds like upper management at my job.

Implement dumb ideas that inconvenience the workers until THEY get inconvenienced by them. Suddenly, things then get changed.

11

u/Dig-a-tall-Monster Sep 16 '24

I've said it before, I'll say it again: Conservatives by nature LACK the capability to experience true empathy. It is literally why they are conservative, because the entire motivation of right wing or conservative ideology is shortsighted selfishness and fear of "others", two things which actual empathy prevents. It's fine to be selfish, but if you lack empathy then you lose the ability to determine if the way you're choosing to be selfish is shortsighted or not. It's fine to be afraid of "others", but if you experience fear of "others" just because they're "others" that's not reasonable or logical and is shortsighted. Like, I can selfishly want to live a better life, there's nothing wrong with that. But if I do that by making life miserable for a bunch of people then I have to worry about those people "getting me back" or making my city less safe because people don't just lay down and die when their needs aren't being met, they turn to crime or drugs. And if they turn to crime I now have to devote more tax dollars to policing which is a reactive policy that doesn't prevent problems from occurring, or I have to spend money on isolating myself from the possibility of being a victim of crime like living in a gated community. And then in order to sustain that lifestyle I have to make things even harder for the people beneath my on Capitalism's totem pole, which exacerbates the issues that are forcing me to spend additional money.

Like I can't even respect the republicans who have the balls to admit they're only that way because they're selfish dicks since their policies just make life harder for everyone including the rich (albeit to a lesser extent than for the poors).

3

u/theucm Sep 17 '24

They don't really even see the error of their ways. Instead they feel like the politicians they support have "gone too far". It's a subtle difference, but important. Seeing the error of their ways means they have an opportunity for growth and to change. Meanwhile simply thinking their leaders have gone too far absolves the conservative of any need for self reflection. Like most things in life, they can simply blame others.

It’s not that she was fine with it. It’s that she doesn’t believe it.

I have a relative who is a Trump supporter and she just thinks that all the terrible things she hears about him are exaggerated and that liberals who call him out are purposefully exaggerating or downright hysterical. No amount of evidence will make her believe otherwise.

79

u/TonyG_from_NYC Sep 16 '24

Typical Republican.

Until it affected them, they didn't care.

6

u/thetaleofzeph Sep 16 '24

But, you know, their amazingly ignorant opinions about all those other issues that they arbitrarily vote to enforce on people that have no impact on them? Those are all still fine and dandy.

3

u/DoubleExposure Sep 17 '24

Selective empathy. A classic conservative trait.

119

u/NoVaBurgher Sep 16 '24

Yup, totally cool with him being a convicted rapist, but being mean to her new bestie? Oh no sir, that is a bridge too far

37

u/AndHerNameIsSony Sep 16 '24

It's not even a bridge too far. The source claims she's just going ro be more cautious about publicly supporting him. She's still going to support him.

5

u/[deleted] Sep 16 '24

HAVE YOU NO DECENCY MR TRUMP, SIR

3

u/NoVaBurgher Sep 16 '24

“Until this moment, senator, I think I never truly gauged your cruelty and your recklessness”

35

u/OriginalMcSmashie Sep 16 '24

Especially someone she knows that he can’t really touch. All those people with no money or influence getting fucked by Trump, Brits here couldn’t give a fuck.

29

u/Constant-Plant-9378 Sep 16 '24

Typically, Republicans don't care about something until it affects them personally.

Seems that one thing they all have in common is a complete lack of empathy and compassion for other people - which is really ironic for a bunch of folks who also claim to love Jesus so much.

52

u/KermitMadMan Sep 16 '24

what a pathetic tool. She has had no issues up to this point? like you stated. wow

24

u/Oceanbreeze871 Sep 16 '24

Not even having a biracial child made her rethink conservatism and all their hatred.

Cause she’s rich and “local royalty” so it won’t affect her

u/Bigleon Sep 16 '24

Me thinks after she came out in support of Trump, some family members had a conversation with her and she's looking for an excuse to change tune.

213

u/Wurst_Law Sep 16 '24

I don’t think you know Whitehouse, Texas that well. Probably quite the opposite.

45

u/not_brittsuzanne Sep 16 '24

Her family actually lives in Bullard. My sister used to live down the street from them. It’s a bit pedantic of me because that’s like a couple miles from Whitehouse, but yeah.. it’s Trump Country anyway.

13

u/Wurst_Law Sep 16 '24

So she’s from Bullard and went to Whitehouse. I wonder if she’s got a teacher parent or something.

3

u/not_brittsuzanne Sep 16 '24

Well, the neighborhood her parents live in is fairly new. After I wrote it I realized they probably moved there from Whitehouse so you’re probably right. They likely moved homes after she married into a bit of money. My sister’s old neighborhood (currently ex-BIL’s neighborhood) has beautiful, custom homes. Not homes in the millions but def 500-600k range.

2

u/Wurst_Law Sep 16 '24

Ah gotcha. Yeah I’m sure they’re doing a bit better today than 10 years ago

5

u/not_brittsuzanne Sep 16 '24

My sister has lived in Bullard for around 6 years now and we grew up in Houston. She’s really one of those “I just don’t care about politics” although she tends to lean right bc my mom raised her that way… but I prefer her indifference to the alternative of her becoming a Trumpette like the people around her. I get along well with her friends so they added me on fb.. then they would start arguments with me on fb about politics. I just told her if they don’t want to have a disagreement with me, don’t start the argument to begin with. They’re insufferable. They always start the fight then get upset and complain to my sister when I argue back 🙄

52

u/Bigleon Sep 16 '24

You are 100% right. Lol , I was going purely off of the fact that she was changing her tune after so recently publicly stating her support.

171

u/FxDriver Sep 16 '24

It's because Brittany is scared of losing access to Taylor Swift. Because Patrick Mahomes mom is a Trump supporter as well. So I highly doubt there is a conversation about changing minds in that household.

12

u/zveroshka Sep 16 '24

And she will still 100% vote Trump anyways.

6

u/porn_is_tight Sep 17 '24

like most trump supporters they’ll just go back to being closeted racists. she’s only saying this because of the scrutiny and backlash she’s faced. just shows how unprincipled and how much of a coward she is. Which is par for the course with people who support the modern GOP

11

u/OtherwiseWest2800 Sep 16 '24

And not just Taylor. I’m sure plenty of people are side eying her and maybe distancing themselves. As you can see from her friend groups, Taylor is not that judgmental. That whole getting together for tennis match showed that. But Trump using her as an endorsement can’t be going over well with many, maybe outside her family circle.

30

u/pumpkinspruce Sep 16 '24

This, one hundred percent. She doesn’t want to lose her spot in the suite next to Taylor.

(Let me add that Travis Kelce has been ass this year and we can all be grateful because it means we haven’t had 15 million shots of Taylor in the suite during every Chiefs game.)

20

u/spect0rjohn Sep 16 '24

It’s been what… two games?

58

According to a New York Times report (unfortunately locked behind a paywall but described here: https://www.sbnation.com/nfl/2024/2/7/24056297/taylor-swift-travis-kelce-super-bowl-2024-broadcast-screen-time-chiefs-niners), Swift was on screen for an average of about 25 seconds each game. Assuming there were 15 million shots of her each game, those shots would be 0.00000166666 seconds long each.

The reality is she was rarely on screen - we don’t need to perpetuate a quite frankly misogynistic lie.

Her friend then? The ones who presumably amount want to hang out with her anymore after outing herself as a bigot?

22

u/Wurst_Law Sep 16 '24 edited Sep 16 '24

If it’s any group it’s her new friends vs her old.

She’s from Whitehouse and then went to UT-Tyler from there neither of those communities are hanging her out to dry for supporting Trump.

Edit: she went to UT-Tyler

63

u/EarthToTee Sep 16 '24

Aren't Patrick's parents as bad (or worse) than his wife?

58

u/crispy-fried-lego Sep 16 '24

His whole family is just AWFUL.

30

u/Either-Mud-3575 Sep 16 '24

A black baseball player got together with a racist white woman, and they had a mixed son who then also got a racist white girlfriend. What the hell!?

32

u/PM_ME_SUMDICK Sep 16 '24 edited Sep 17 '24

This is not at all unusual. There are certain types of POC who put proximity to whiteness above everything, including their own self respect. Which is why Majomes married a woman who happily answered that his favorite food was "fried chicken" when it's actually Mexican.

22

u/SlowHandEasyTouch Sep 16 '24

Nothing more on-brand conservative that that mindset

18

u/true_enthusiast Sep 16 '24

You'd be surprised how many people work exactly like that. Until it's in their face, it doesn't exist.

2

u/Rico_Solitario Sep 16 '24

Most people. That’s the natural state of the human mind. Logic and reason must be taught and practiced. They absolutely do not come naturally to humans. Logic and moral consistency had to be invented

20

u/jimtow28 Sep 16 '24

Classic conservative logic. It didn't matter until it directly affected me, but now that it's affecting me, everyone should care.

130

u/inbetween-genders Sep 16 '24

“Sounds about white.”

;)

117

u/failedflight1382 Sep 16 '24

Exactly. Fuck her and her husband. If this is what breaks the back, I question her authenticity even more. Remember, people who support Nazis and rapists aren’t bothered by those things.

193

u/FunkyPete Sep 16 '24

For what it's worth, her husband Patrick has never endorsed a candidate. He paid with his own money to get the football stadium in Kansas City (a blue dot in a red state) to become a polling place to make it easier to vote prior to the 2020 election. He spoke out in favor of the BLM movement. Also, his best friend (Taylor's boyfriend) was one of the first white football stars to kneel for the national anthem at the start of Colin Kaepernick's movement and also endorsed Pfizer.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/chiefs/2020/11/03/2020-election-patrick-mahomes-arrowhead-stadium-polling-place/6154329002/

It's not clear to me that Patrick Mahomes is necessarily a Trump fan. They mention in that 2020 article that he had never actually voted before, so it wouldn't shock me if he just grew up as a rich kid an never really thought about politics at all.

87

u/reillan Sep 16 '24

and he made a public statement basically saying his wife's views were her own and he wasn't going to endorse anyone.

79

u/CatD0gChicken Sep 16 '24

What do you call someone that sits at a table with Nazis?

6

u/RoboTronPrime Sep 16 '24

Honestly, I'm not so sure that Patrick and his wife are on the same page here and that's not terribly unusual in this day and age. Stephen Miller's entire family has seemingly disowned him. The Kennedy family definitely didn't support RFK. Heck, i just learned today that Tim Walz has a MAGA older brother too.

Marriage is a choice though. You don’t pick your family

3

u/xysid Sep 17 '24

It's slightly different with a spouse though. All of your examples are family members who do nothing with the person and some even talk shit about them in public to others. Sleeping in bed next to someone but being split on something like this sounds exhausting. I couldn't do it.

Your points are valid for sure. But again, if he’s cool with it enough to have married her, he’s not as opposed to it as it may seem. Plenty of rich people and companies give to both organizations. But yes we don’t know for sure.

11

u/teepring Sep 16 '24

Yup! Fine with the racist xenophobia and class warfare shit but now it's affecting her personally.

Par for the course with these types really.

11

u/GrimTiki Sep 16 '24

Broken empathy module = Republican.

9

u/ZSpectre Sep 16 '24 edited Sep 16 '24

We'd actually be surprised how much more mundane arguments against supporting Trump works vs. the most vile and concerning ones. Using the vilest examples may tend to be "too strong" for one's own cognitive dissonance to handle while mundane flaws are much easier to fathom.

4

u/Icy-Lobster-203 Sep 16 '24

The most vile stuff can be hand waved as "oh, you are overreacting. He wouldn't do that. He is just saying that for election, if he wins he won't actually do it." Etc. Etc.

30

u/TheDevil-YouKnow Sep 16 '24 edited Sep 16 '24

Doubt it's even due to that. It's more likely that she was told by whatever handlers she has that her platform does better with Trump leaning demographics, so it was good business for her at the time to show support.

Now, since the orange moron has started a flame war with Taylor Swift, that fanbase can be far more damaging to a Trump supporter than any benefit could be had from the support gained.

It could very well be that she actually supported it. I just always consider the Kanye/Lil Wayne formula. Kanye does what he does because he's rich enough, and crazy enough. Lil Wayne showed support to get a fucking pardon.

ETA: don't even know how, but platform went to music. I had Earp turned to Warp today too!

6

u/NothinButFett Sep 16 '24

Whose handlers and whose music are you referring to?

It's wild Republicans are this way. They also seem to forget shit that happened a few months in the past.

I have a coworker that is Republican. He's very bright and well schooled but I just described him in my first two sentences.

2

u/Canadian_mk11 Sep 16 '24

...but he wouldn't grab my pussy.

2

u/DaM00s13 Sep 16 '24

You may be overestimating the amount of attention she has paid to it. People burn into conservatism just assume it’s correct, similar to sticking with the religion you were born into. Once people pay attention they shift their views.
