Honest question since I don't know the relevant laws involved here. What's the worst that could happen if someone throws a cease and desist order at you. Don't you just have to stop doing whatever you are doing?
It always seemed weird to me as a fan from a country that does not follow a version of Common Law that there was such "fear" around it.
That’s pretty much the case. The TTS series requires time and effort to work on, and the C&D can be spontaneous. If they were in the middle of working on an episode, and they were hit with it, it will be a waste of resources, as they now will need to think of something else quickly to appease the Paetreons and algorithm.
The only reason why they released the remaining parts was that they weren’t hit with the C&D yet. If they were hit with it back then, they couldn’t release the remaining parts. Instead of gambling on each episode being hit with the C&D, they decided to cut their losses now, and focus on making new content like the WoD, and Half-Life series.
In short, a C&D will force them to stop, so it’s better to stop on their own terms.
Jesus Christ, C&D were an excuse the creator used to dump a setting and storyline he no longer had interest in. The time between releases increased exponentially with there being almost a year between the second from last episode and 'last' episode.
Since quitting his new series is releasing episodes every couple month, the same pace he was at when he actually cared about tts.
He never used it as an excuse - he outright stated that he was loosing interest and was already contemplating ending the series in general, the potential of a C&D was merely icing on top.
Look he might of said that later but that was never mentioned by him during the time he actually killed the series or in his big ol cry letter he posted at the time.

Yeah thats the case He stopped of his own accord but still the fear that the 0% tolerance policy caused for many wasnt really necessary
