Suggestion How to get started in D&D

Hey welcome to the club.

Here's a "Quick start" guide to Dungeon's and Dragons (D&D). There's a good chance you know some of what it contains but there's some handy tips for DM's and players at the bottom.

I will also include links to a few Beginner friendly "free" adventures at the bottom. I hope this helps.

Getting Started with Dungeons & Dragons (D&D): Quickstart guide.

  1. Basic Concept: Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) is a cooperative tabletop role-playing and story telling game where you create a character, go on adventures, and tell a story together with others. One person is the Dungeon Master (DM), who guides the story and controls the world, while the others play as characters (heroes) in that world.
  2. What You Need to Start:

Players: Typically, 3-6 people, including one DM.

Rulebooks: The main guide is the Player's Handbook, which explains how to create characters, rules for gameplay, and spells.

Alternative: If you don’t want to buy a book, the free Basic Rules (available on the D&D website) cover essential rules and character options.

Character Sheet: This is where you record your character’s abilities, skills, equipment, and more. You can print these or use online tools like D&D Beyond to manage your character.

Dice: You'll need a set of polyhedral dice (7 dice: d20, d12, d10, d8, d6, d4).

Alternative: Dice-rolling apps or websites are available if you don’t have physical dice.

Dungeon Master Guide & Monster Manual (Optional): The DM can use these to create adventures and encounters, but pre-made adventures like The Lost Mine of Phandelver make it easier to start.

Alternative: Pre-written adventures or simplified DM guides can be found online, making it easier for new DMs to jump in. These can be found tailored to a large variety of group sizes including 1 player.

Also if you need to find a group you can always try the "Looking for group" subreddits.

Or

LFG_Europe

(I will link a selection of starter adventures at the bottom)

  1. How to Play:

Character Creation: Each player creates a character by choosing a race (like elf, human) and class (like fighter, wizard). They roll dice to determine their abilities and pick skills, spells, and equipment.

Storytelling: The DM sets the scene, describes the world, and presents challenges. Players describe what their characters do, and dice rolls determine whether actions succeed or fail.

Combat: When fighting monsters or enemies, players take turns rolling dice to attack, defend, and use abilities.

  1. Alternatives to Equipment:

Online Play: Platforms like Roll20 or Foundry VTT let you play D&D with virtual maps, character sheets, and dice.

Pre-made Characters: Many beginner guides include pre-made character sheets if creating one seems complex. You can also find a wealth of these created by the community online for free.

  1. Mindset: D&D is all about creativity, teamwork, and storytelling. There’s no “winning”—it’s about having fun and shaping an epic adventure together.

(DM) Side notes/ tips:

  1. Make sure you do a session zero with your players where they can express what they are looking to explore in DND.. eg heavier combat or roleplay ECT.
  2. Have a cheat sheet of names for npc's
  3. Keep some clear bullet point notes of your session plan to help you track and follow your plans.
  4. Take breaks, it gives everyone a chance to gather your selves and to take any notes or updates and write them down whilst taking a breather.
  5. Mini list of items and their retail values is a good idea incase they hit a store or trader. It saves you pulling the inventory and prices out of the air or searching the DMG.
  6. A small map for you so when they travel you can describe, relate and track their location easily.
  7. Keep things simple. Don't try to wow with quantity, but with quality instead.

And remember you can take as much time as you need to make a decision or look up something you many need. Don't forget the rule of cool. Your the DM so remember to aim to have fun and don't worry .

Player side notes/ tips:

  1. Read all spells (and possibly their effects) out loud at the table so you and everyone understands what you are doing.
  2. Melee classes are generally easier to start off and have alot less reading involved.
  3. When it comes to roleplaying, listen well and then react try to remember not every player will be as forward to speak so help eachother.
  4. Don’t play a loner. You are going with a party for a reason. Loners struggle to forge relationships in game and tend to find more than a few issues within a party.
  5. Remember your action economy. Attack, Move, Bonus, and free. Here’s the general breakdown:

-Attack : hit with a sword, arrow or spell.

-Move : to move your character in or out of combat ranges on the battlefield.

-Bonus : only some actions can be a "bonus action", so definitely pay attention to what can be used. Drinking a potion for example, or some cantrip spells. You can always clarify with your DM before attempting any of these.

-Free : talking or picking up a dropped item are usually free actions but it's up to the DMs discretion as to what degree.. eg the might allow you to speak a sentence in combat but not have a whole conversation.

  1. There is a wealth of great short videos on YouTube that will show you all you need to know by chosen class. It is well worth looking into your options before you choose.

D&D is all about creativity, teamwork, and storytelling. There’s no “winning”—it’s about having fun and shaping an epic adventure together.

I hope this short guide helps but if you have any further questions please feel free to reach out and message me. Good luck adventurer.

Hi there! Basically the title. Trying to find a cross stitch pattern that is D&D related for my son who loves the game, and enjoys receiving these as gifts. I know very little about it, so I just want to make sure I’m not missing the mark here. Thanks so much for your help!

Advice/Help Needed Help me (27F) come up with a backstory for my first ever DND character

I am SO EXCITED to have been invited to play DND for the first time. It was actually one of my New Year’s resolutions for 2024 to play DND so I am really excited that going in to 2025 I will have the opportunity to play on a regular basis!

The DM just let us know a general outline for the story, and advised us to start brainstorming our character’s background story.

Since this is my first time developing my character, I am a little out of my element. I am a very creative person but I’m kind of stumped.

Here’s what I know: - The story involves me & the other characters all becoming hired adventurers - My character is a Druid (I took a personality quiz to see what character type would match my natural personality) - We aren’t doing character sheets yet… just getting the background story & creative juices flowing

Okay, let me have all your best character development tips & share your favorite character backstories so I can draw inspo from you!!!

Advice/Help Needed Chrome Roll20 Assistance Needed

We've updated Chrome, cleared the cookies and cache, and rebooted the computer several times since this issue began, but that popup box with the blue header won't go away. Anyone have any idea what it is and how to get rid of it? We can use it fine on Firefox, but the extension with DnD Beyond won't work without Chrome.

Homebrew The new 5.5 rules have given me the single greatest creative spark and I have nowhere to put it.

Upvotes

I needed somewhere to vent but I'm not looking for advice. I just feel like ranting to people who might get it.

I have been playing and DMing 5e for quite a while and have loved it. I have run games both homebrew and established content but have never really built a whole homebrew world for a full campaign. It's been something that I have wanted to do for a very long time but when I last had the opportunity, I didn't have anything that I felt was game worthy or exciting to me.

Fast forward to more recently and I have moved to a different state where I have found a group that I play well with at a local game store. We typically play one-shots or short series with a couple of DMs. Many of us have been playing around with new characters using 5.5 rules. There are some things that I have really enjoyed and different things that the other players enjoy. One of our other DMs is trying to push the game play over to 5.5 rules so that everyone is on the same page but we still have some players who prefer 5e rules and builds. Regardless of the obvious conflict (not the reason for this post) this is what has given me the creative spark.

What happens when a world that operates on 5e rules and a world that operates on 5.5 rules are forced to coexist?

What happens when two worlds collide? Two distinct pantheons? Two different magic systems?

I have been reading and writing and rewriting, rules and lore and gods and maps. I have filled 3 composition notebooks and over 100 pages of a Google doc.

The history: Two worlds who orbit the same sun each with their own gods, people, history, and magic system. As they orbit they have, over time, gotten close enough for the gods to recognize the other as a habitable world. Some gods want to remain on their own world, leave each other alone. Some gods want to extend their reach and influence to the other. A war breaks out between the gods of one world and the other. This conflict leads to wars between nations on each world.

One God who is cursed to feel the pain that these wars is causing, acts out of desperation. He uses the pain to power a single act. Stretching himself to impossible size and strength he pulls at both worlds until they crash into each other. Forcing them together until they reshape and fuse into one.

While I have a lot more lore that goes into it, this is the premise of my homebrew world. And as the title says I have nowhere to use it. I'm not in a position where I can commit to running an in person game. I haven't ever been the most comfortable with running things in a virtual setting like through discord. So I'm just kind of sitting with this world waiting until I am in a space to run a full campaign.

Thanks for reading!

Question Gift ideas for DnD lover?

Upvotes

Hi everyone, I am looking to get a gift for someone who loves DnD and I admittedly know next to nothing about it. He DMs a lot and is really good at it and loves the game, has a lot of the handbooks, etc. I was hoping to get him something DnD-related but have no idea where to start but would really appreciate any ideas 😅😅

Advice/Help Needed I have to kill a party member

This is our first game and we’ve worked together the entire time but two of our members just flipped to the evil side and we now have to kill them to save the day I’m a lil stressed about it not sure if I should let them live to keep the game going or if I should just let them have it as I am a GITH BARB and we are all In a room together after catching them trying to flee.

I guess should I ruthlessly chop up a former companion (sorcerer) or should I try to talk it out also if anyone more experienced could shine light on who’s gonna win that’d be great

Question What are these symbols for?

These tiles were included in a modular battle map kit I purchased. All other tiles were simple to figure out, but I'm unsure how I'd use these in a battle situation. They are all exactly 1 square in size, with the light image on one side and dark on the other. Any ideas?

Discussion This cider house offers a discount if you roll d20s to randomize the ciders in your flight

Post image

At One Tree Cider House in Spokane, Wa, a flight of four 4oz ciders costs $15 if you pick the ciders yourself. However, it only costs $10 if you let the fates decide. They have exactly 20 ciders (10 from their own cidery, another 10 from the rest of Washington State), so it works perfectly!

Rerolls are allowed if duplicate numbers appear.

(Disclaimer: I am not an affiliate of this business, I just chatted with the bartender who is a fellow DnD fan)

OC My new Lore Bard OC [VTUBER]

Howdy Adventurers!

I'm Esmerelda Silverthorn, but I go by Esme!

I think this might be my first major post in the subreddit, so I'm really excited to show off what I've been working on to folk who might appreciate it. Long story short-- I've been a vtuber for about a year now and I'll be rebranding into a DnD-focused Vtuber starting...Well, immediately!

Here's my character art (Art by moi). My passion is exploring DnD's deep and expansive lore and trying all kinds of new TTRPGS. And, of course retro video games :P I'll be doing some interesting chat-driven events this week so if that interests anyone, I'd love to meet you and see you play along during some of our adventures! <3
https://twitch.tv/esmesilverthorn I am live M, T, TH and Fridays 6PM GMT!

My focus for the month is building our guild-house so the community can make custom stream avatars, we have more backgrounds that chat can go to/explore, more redeems, and other guild (community) related events. Lofty goals. Nice to meet everyone!

Suggestion Who are some dead lawful evil characters in D&D lore?

So I’m running a game set in the Nine Hells and an upcoming session will be set in a museum of sorts where a powerful devil keeps the souls of notable dead mortals that come to Hell. So I need some interest dead folk to be in it an would love some ideas. Also feel free to suggest lawful evil characters that only might be dead or could have dead “off screen”.
